I agree. Something in this expansion needs to be casual.
Druids were using it to gain astral force
I kid
This is harsh, I know, but when it comes to Druid development it’s looking like amateur hour. I had some hope it wouldn’t come to this sort of knee-jerk cycle of tweaks and outright nerfs but part of me knew it would, since they didn’t bring out Druid until the very last beta event.
Let’s be honest here, Avatar is not a choice or an engaging mechanic. You need it to heal, you need it for break bars, and most importantly you need it because you need Grace of the Land to help offset the lack of damage you’re doing. Grace of the Land alone is reason enough to use Avatar on cd. Astral Force accomplishes nothing as a mechanic, it’s just a gate to reach another gate.
I agree, if Anet is committed to this iteration of Avatar then just remove force and make it a fixed cooldown. I’d prefer to see a rework to the mechanic entirely; buff staff heals, divorce Grace of the Land from avatar, and make Avatar something you’d want to use tactically in PvE.
Kind of messes with the feel of the weapon. Solar Beam is already one of the clunkiest auto attacks in the game, imo. It requires you to target enemies that are behind other enemies to get the most out of it, whereas other weapons with piercing mechanics work off of the front target.
I don’t think it needed this done to it on top of everything, even if the devs felt like the out of combat AF generation was an issue.
There’s a difference between a natural disaster and a terrorist attack. Throwing money at natural disasters actually has a tangible benefit, since there is infrastructure and property that has to be rebuilt.
I don’t see how money would help in this situation.
Help Paris…do what?
And to add on, while the small minority of people will understand what the dps meter doesn’t measure, the majority will not, leading to all the problems.
Majority, minority, who knows. They would be the same people who think they’re pulling 15k dps in all situations despite what the numbers popping up on their screen are saying, because somebody came up with that number in a spreadsheet.
Dumb people are dumb, though I would argue it’s harder to be that dumb when you have your actual DPS up on the screen.
No, there is no “who knows”. We already do know. We can already look at WoW and see the impact of the dps meter. We can already enter into the game and I can bet you go into a pug group, someone will link their dps meter at the end of a dungeon or raid boss, and not care about what the healers did, or buffs, or anything and just focus on damage.
Who cares what they care about? I can group up with people in GW2 and they won’t care how much might I gave them but they’re thrilled when they see a big number pop up on their screen. We can go back and forth on this kind of crap all day.
And if we’re talking about other games, I would contend that Gearscore had a far more negative effect than anything Recount ever wrought. You seem to be mostly upset that people linked the meters into chat to show off, and didn’t acknowledge your contributions at the same time.
How about a game without damage meters like, oh, Final Fantasy XI; where the community decided Dragoons were terrible and it was almost impossible to level one because nobody would group with them. In reality Dragoon actually parsed pretty well but since that information wasn’t readily available the myth that “Dragoon sucks” lasted for a very long time, kind of like how “Necromancer sucks” is a thing in this game. In both cases it’s elitism born out of ignorance and trying to emulate top players.
Your whole use and misuse argument is pointless because people already misuse the Meta. I don’t see how having the tool available which would show the actual numbers people are getting could be a negative for PvE community at this point. On the contrary it may dispel some widely believed myths and make things a little better.

A DPS meter doesn’t measure:
- fraction of DPS not related to personal play (by booning banners, or buffs),
- heals or reductions of dmg taken keeping people up or
- numer and time spend on resses (will it lower DPS due to dead/downstate, or just stop measuring giving a false number , would ressing lower dps or stop measuring? also ging false values?
- combo’s and comparables
- outgoing conditions, and cleans
- CC’s and or interrupts keeping you or them from getting killed and or adding to DPS?
- DOT or effective DOT
- Average DPS/Time
- Time spend facerubbing the floor
*
and thus:- A value easily interpreted wrong when narrowminded.
Uh, it’s been awhile since I played WoW and thus used a dps meter, but Recount (the most popular dps meter when I was playing) told you all of this stuff.
It’s literally your combat log aggregated into an easy to read format. I was the heal lead for my guild’s raids back then so I was generally more interested in the non-dps parts like conditions removed, activity, healing done (and to whom), HPS, deaths, mana recovered, etc.
A DPS meter is far more than the name implies.
(edited by OnionXI.6735)
we dont need a dps meter for meta, as I have played many RPG I know all the harm a dps meter can do to a group moral. When I was raid leading in world of warcraft one of the biggest rules is never insult me the raid leader, because as a raid leader I am responsible for group moral. Usually what happens is a tank who thinks he is so valuable to the raid he can say whatever he want and insult anyone he wants, and it usually is a big surprise when I boot his kitten . You see where I am going? if people join raid, get booted, get harassed, get kicked, get insulted, this ripple effect will effect every other part of the game, and over time guild war 2 will become just like wow, and I did not buy guild war 2 because it is like wow, i bought guild war 2 excatly because it is not wow. I also strongly believe the best part of the game is not have a damage meter, this allows me to try different build and to get a feel for different build, that alone is worth the price of admission!
You’re conflating so many things in this wall of text.
You like trying different builds but you just don’t want to have any idea of the effectiveness of those builds in different encounters. Alright.
As for the community, I don’t know what game you’re playing or if you just play in a bubble. You must not play a necro or ranger either. I can tell you, back when dungeons were a thing, I had to justify my place in a number of groups before the run even started for stupid crap like CoE because a good number of people who PUG follow metabattle like it’s the gospel. Nevermind if metabattle ranks your build as “Great” no no no, it has to be “Meta”.
This isn’t a big secret, but I’ll fill you in since you seem unaware, “elitists” have been here since CoF p1 farm started right after launch. It’s fine if you don’t pay attention to this kind of thing but for the broader PvE community the theoretical math and meta builds have a big influence.
And on the subject of the community itself, we’re all MMO players. Most people who play GW2 have probably played WoW and a number of other MMOs. There is nothing inherently different about this group of nerds because it’s basically the same as the group of nerds playing that game over there. WoW, Wildstar, and FF14 all have their adorable Reddit posts and maymays too, I assure you. And like those games, you PUG a group and usually people don’t say a word.
Seems like there are a number of casuals in this thread who don’t know who you are or what you do for the community.
For those complaining that this would fill the game with elitists, wake up, because they’re already here. The difference however is that their elitism is based on ignorance. If you don’t do the kind of content that leads you to encounter these people, then you won’t have to worry about the existence of a dps meter either way.
Having real numbers for fights would be beneficial to the community at this point.
Is it really that difficult to assign a few people to do a review and update of dungeon and boss mechanics so they can be engaging and rewarding content options for leveling and end-game characters?
They did this for AC, then disbanded the team and laid off Robert Hrouda back in 2013.
Dungeons were hyped pretty hard leading to launch. At the bottom of these forums you can find a link to https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/dungeons/ with such gems as
“Dungeons are huge, private adventure areas that only teams of high-level players dare explore. The risks are immense but the rewards are great for those who brave the hazards of the dungeons of Tyria.”
and
“There are tremendous risks for those who brave the dungeons in Guild Wars 2, but the rewards are great—each dungeon has its own unique armors and weapons that can’t be found anywhere else. The armor from the Ascalonian Catacombs is different from what you’ll find in Sorrow’s Embrace, which is different from the treasure found in Caudecus’s Manor.”
It’s hilarious because nowadays the best way to get the dungeon armor and weapons is not by running the actual dungeons, but by doing PvP. But it’s not like there are exclusive ascended trinkets locked behind those dungeon skins…oh wait.
The way they can just abandon content like this is shameful. I seem to recall, but could be mistaken, that one of the reasons why the level cap is 80 and will remain 80 is so that content doesn’t get abandoned.
And you have to do PvP to get dungeon gear now. It all balances out.
I would avoid going all out on cleric or apothecary just because you run the risk of becoming the tank. Because the positional requirements on staff to charge AF effectively, this would be a bad thing. I also wouldn’t go full healing because it may end up being overkill. Remember that you won’t be the only source of healing in the raid so you may easily find yourself in a situation where all that healing is just going to waste.
DPS, however, is always good. Now it comes down to whether power or condition damage is better. I honestly don’t know the answer to that one, but my gut tells me most of your damage is going to be coming from your pet anyway which isn’t based on your stats.
If you go the condition route, consider a mix of apothecary with sinister or viper. Maybe give up the buffs from warhorn (should be mostly superfluous if a herald is present anyway) and just go all out for axe/torch.
If power, I’m currently using zealot weapons and armor with berserker trinkets and a marauder amulet. A cheaper alternative would be cleric instead of zealot. Sword/Warhorn for swap.
On the heal, in most situations you’ll probably get more out of Glyph of Restoration and Glyph of Unity complimenting it. Spirit of Nature is static and has a 30% uptime but will be useful if there is a situation where lots of passive healing or stability is required. HS may be useful if a fight is extremely heavy on conditions but even then idk. Glyph heals for more, removes condition with trait, and has a shorter cd. You have access to 2 other water fields (staff 5 and CA 4) and CA 2 seems like it should be enough condi removal.
Hopefully it’s not a bug because I’d hate to see it fixed. It has great synergy with Quick Draw.
Two week old thread, I know, but since it was bumped I was wondering; does concentration affect buffs like Glyph of Empowerment and Grace of the Land? That’s the only way I could imagine this set being at all worthwhile in PvE.
I’m using Zealot armor + weapons and zerker trinkets. Staff and Axe + Warhorn. Sword is just too risky in HoT imo, and I’m too lazy and poor atm to get a torch for solo. Also I just use staff most of the time even though I have a longbow, because staff is the only reliable way to have CA ready to go if I need it and it has some other uses. It’s not a horrible weapon if you manually target enemies in the back, though I wish the beam would just pierce or even not require a target at all.
No super secret build, nature magic + skirmishing and I typically run frost and sun spirit on my bar even when soloing. Even though I don’t have condition damage, sun spirit is absolutely vital for decent dps in addition to sharpened edges from skirmishing.
Tip: You don’t need Natural Stride with this setup either. Staff 3 puts you in combat briefly so you can swap to horn and use up Quick Draw with Call of the Wild every 11s or so. Throw in an electric wyvern and you’ll have perma-swiftness effortlessly.
Soloing actually hasn’t been bad at all with this setup. Is it the best damage ever? No, but it’s still pretty high and there’s pretty much no risk involved.
this was the point of the change?
when you tagged an escort and left you were relying on someone else to actually do the event ~ getting full credit was kinda silly
What is silly about it?
Before it was more cooperative. I usually stay at Red and run Amber and Indigo caravans 2/3 of the way through and expect somebody defending Amber and Indigo to receive their supply.
I should get credit for that work, and so should the people who finish it. Making people stick to a single event is only going to make SW even more boring.
Well, it still requires 250 charged lodestones which are about 3g a pop. Plus 250 sword blades at about 30s each.
So yes, it’s still very expensive and a huge grind. Map rewards really didn’t do anything for the charged lodestone price since pretty much nobody is running CoE anymore.
It seems like it just might be more cost effective to simply buy the precursor, which is a shame. When paper can be traded you know it’s going to be expensive; why pay a premium for the “privilege” to START the collection process?
The fix that Anet really needs to do on this isn’t to make paper traded; it’s to replace the paper requirement on Anthology of Villains with something else or make paper an early recipe.
A lot of champions are very melee unfriendly and it’s a good idea to bring a range weapon. You may not have to be ranged 100% of the time, but you’ll definitely want the option to back out of range.
There are a few things in regards that just don’t sit well with me.
1. That they abandoned the content to begin with. Before the game launched dungeons were a heavily advertised feature. It’s a major reason I got into the game in the first place. Years on, to see nothing done with dungeons besides the rewards update (and now nerf) and the dungeon team disbanded is just shameful.
2. This change was sprung on everybody seemingly out of nowhere, buried in a boring post by an economist. Dungeons may have had nothing to do with HoT but my daily dungeon runs were a big part of what I did and what I had planned to continue to do after HoT. By the time this was announced Anet already had my $100 for HoT. Now I find myself wondering what I’m going to do for money once Halloween is over.
3. Dungeons are still the only source of certain ascended trinkets in the game and nothing was done to counteract the obvious and intended effect the rewards nerf would have on getting groups. Token rewards weren’t increased; nothing. If you didn’t have every skin unlocked for certain dungeons before, good luck getting them now. LFG is pretty much dead for several dungeons.
Oh boy, can’t believe I’m admitting this, but I haven’t been in a guild seriously or used any voice chat in 4 years.
I just recently started trying to stop being so anti-social but it’s kind of difficult and MMO communities in general feel so different these days.
On the subject of voice chat, it’s never been something I can just jump into and not feel awkward about until I get to know the people. I had groups of friends in WoW and SWTOR that I eventually could joke around with and all that, but I haven’t had something like that since.
I tried a guild out recently but honestly it’s very difficult to get into a social group that’s already established like that.
Anyway, don’t know what advice I could give but thought I’d share my info so at least you know you’re not alone.
It’s kind of dim to complain about the “spoiler” that you have a battle with Mordremoth.
Anyway, yeah this is really frustrating. The little cyclones that are supposed to throw you into the air don’t seem to work for me most of the time, which is kind of a problem since he knocks you out of the air within a few seconds so you need to get back up there.
Also had an issue where a reality rift showed up behind Braham IN THE AIR – that was game over. It wasn’t just a visual bug either; standing next to Braham to try to activate it didn’t work.
Buggy, frustrating fight that takes forever just to get into it (the two illusion battles beforehand) and breaks your armor should you fail.
The “features” of sword #1 really show in the new maps, like when a sniper decides to stealth and you go flying off a cliff. A lot of enemies are very unfriendly for melee so the animation lock is of no help there either, and it’s also an essentially useless weapon against pocket raptors in particular.
I only use a sword in dungeons now. I wish they would just buff MH Axe so the PvP people can have sword as they like it and everyone else can have a decent alternative for single-target dps.
It’s been around since the beginning of the game. Honestly, I’ve never done all of Arah and I’ve mostly stayed out of Fractals thus far to avoid these kinds of experiences. I have no issue using a meta build and gear, but it seems almost impossible to find a group of people willing to let you learn a dungeon/fractal these days.
So I finished this legendary yesterday, since I had had the precursor for ages and was within striking distance on mats to finish it – why not? It is a pretty disappointing legendary though, whereas at launch it was all I really wanted.
Completing it and then using it for the first time was a very “meh” experience.
I’ve already stopped. I was only running COE 123 and COF 1&2 at this point anyway. The gold, in addition to the chance at cores/lodestones, and the rares you can buy with tokens made it worth the time to me.
As it is, I get better results on all of those things in SW anyway, so I’m just going to hardcore farm it now.
I just leveled an engi to 80 and I have 36hrs played on it. This was with a boost to level 30 so the ~1hr per level estimate Donari gave seems about right; it may be a little less.
Also note that I played dress up for some of that time, didn’t do dungeons or any story missions, and at several times I went to zones that were under my level for map completion.
What the kitty? Blaming the victim much?
Wow! It’s like I’m really on tumblr!
Ignore and move on. It’s so simple.
It’s a shame to read this thread and see how much this legendary has been butchered and neglected. It’s always been my favorite since it really reminds me of Fenrir and I want it for my ranger. I grabbed the precursor for like 20g back during the Karka event and I started playing again recently. It should be a no-brainer for me to make this weapon but I may be better off working on something else entirely.
This is a warhorn, so a distinct and noticeable sound should be central to the weapon. If the sound is annoying to some players then that’s just too bad for them I’d say.
The moon is also a big deal. If it’s really gone please fix.
These are interesting times when people are adamantly defending not having a character slot by default, and you get flamed for being against pre-ordering games. It’s certainly a huge leap from the days of GW1 where simply buying an expansion gave you character slots to actually play the new classes.
But then I guess if you’re paying $50 for hardly any content shown, $75 for some pixel toys, or $100 for some gems you’ll swallow anything that makes you feel like you’re getting a better deal.
Yeah, I don’t get why they’re holding onto that character slot so tightly. It would have been simpler and garnered more goodwill to just include a character slot with HoT regardless of pre-order.
Plus I’m not a fan of pre-orders in general anymore (Arkham Knight is just the latest example of why you don’t pre-order); and in the case of HoT I haven’t seen anything that would lead me to believe that PvE is anything but dead in the water or that it’s worth $50.
Still it seems like this move has managed to placate most people, so good for them.
mmmm sorry but I think gw2 is really a non grind game.
everything u grind for is something u dont really need to play the game.
Acended gear is the only grind factor I admit but what else?
I see this stated a lot, but may I ask, what exactly would you do in the game if not grind? I quit playing like 4 months after launch and just recently came back and it’s amazing how little the game has changed. Apparently, almost all of the content ANet has to show for all this time is temporary “Living Story” stuff – simply genius!
GW2’s PvE “endgame” is entirely about vanity and almost everything can be boiled down to the universal currency gold. Gold, by the way, is constantly being devalued.
The game is pretty much stagnant and in a few months I would expect the core content of HoT to be just as stagnant for years to come, so again, what else would you do besides grind? Stand in town all day?
Also, thank you OP for the video. It was a very useful reminder.
(edited by OnionXI.6735)
Unless they’re doing something to rescue PvE from the sorry state it’s in, not even half of what they’re asking.
Not going to pay $50 if it just means adding a new zone to the vapid world boss grind and no new dungeons.
I’m just going to wait for a discount. It’s not like the content is going anywhere after all; the stuff you do when HoT releases will likely be the same stuff you do two years down the line.
If GW2 was anything like Rift, I know I would NOT be playing it, and even less giving 20€ or more worth of gems per month to the developers.
There’s some things like housing and mounts that I hope to see in GW2 someday, but other things like raiding that would make me quit immediately.
I see this sentiment a lot on these forums and I just don’t understand it. Raiding is so anathema to some people that it can’t even exist in the game they’re playing.
I’m not into PvP, so what I do when I play an MMO that has PvP is to simply not do it and instead do things I like. PvP has had more of an affect on the games I’ve played because of balance than the other way around, yet it’s never made me quit.
By far…
Brisban Wildlands – I love the western half of this zone especially.
Southsun Cove – I haven’t seen a game do tropics this well since FFXI.
Mount Maelstrom – Similarly, the best volcano I’ve seen in an MMO since FFXI.
Those are the ones that really stand out for me. If this game had some deserts I could probably fill the rest of the list up with them.
A lot of bosses have periodic condition removal as well. I won’t even consider taking my condi necro into CoE for example.
Punctuation is fine. The only “punctuation” I find annoying is when somebody ends all of their sentences with “lol” or a smiley.
Another annoying thing for me
is when
people break up their sentences
like this
I’d never call somebody out on it though. I’m amazed you’d get called out for using periods at the end of your sentences.
I wouldn’t say it’s ruined other games for me. I have various reasons for not going back to previously played MMOs that don’t have anything to do with what’s in GW2.
The movement and combat in GW2 is different but it wouldn’t keep me from being able to play something that wasn’t so mobile. Most games control differently so it’s just a matter of getting used to that game’s functions, like you get used to its rules.
Some of the little things like shared resource nodes and mobs are really hard to go back from. I played TOR again for a bit after it went f2p and I had completely forgotten that I couldn’t attack the mobs of others and that it’s actually rude to do so.
But GW2 has made me appreciate things in other games more. I’ve always liked healing. I also like having all my abilities available — for me 4-5 hotbars is preferable to slots I have to switch out constantly. I’ve always loved raiding. I would prefer quest hubs to running around looking for DEs to level, but I really miss the days of forming a group and camping somewhere. This might be shocking but I’m also not turned off by a subscription either, if it’s attached to a game with a good PvE endgame.
If GW2 ruins other MMOs for me in any way it would probably be that its influence affects new MMOs — that it would be the new standard. It feels like things have shifted dramatically in the last year. People hate subscriptions, people hate the trinity, people hate raiding (and these are things I’m seeing on TESO forums). I’m not stuck on GW2; I’m actively looking for a new MMO that isn’t like it and there only seems to be one on the horizon.
(edited by OnionXI.6735)
I use a Naga and I cannot imagine not using a Naga or something very similar now. It only took about an hour to get used to the side buttons. I still had to mix in some keybinds for SWTOR but a game like GW2 requires nothing but the mouse buttons.
I run dungeon pugs so stuff just happens. I don’t put much value on finishers that aren’t blasts and I plan around using my own combo fields rather than those of others. Most of my characters are melee and only one of them can use a blast finisher with a melee weapon.
Am I being socially active? Not really. Most groups I’m in don’t talk save for, “r, y, 3, 2, 1”. It’s really 5 people doing their own stuff, using the utilities they’re supposed to use, and keeping themselves alive.
Revives and reflects? Of course.
Varies. High toughness is usually a good way to ensure most enemies will focus on your character but there are some bosses who prioritize range or will go after a person reviving.
I’d say it’s worth it. You’ll get so many hours out of just the campaigns. The world is massive and there’s tons of exploration to be had — so many zones the campaigns won’t take you through.
I doubt many people play it now but it’s possible to solo the campaigns and get 30 HoM points if you’re after them. If you do play however, I would strongly recommend starting with Nightfall for heroes and getting a good team build asap.
Even if you’re not going for HoM points the builds from this vid’s description are extremely useful if you need to get through the game solo.
Have you set it to auto-cast?
My gripe is, right now im recruiting for a guild that im in, on Seafarers Rest. And while I will post on /map the usual recruitment type posts I will also whisper anyone I see thats not in a guild. And I would say that on average out of every 20 people that I whisper around 18-19 people wont even reply to the whisper.
Even a no thanks I would be happy with, but I just think that people cant even take 2 seconds to write a reply as extremely rude.
I’m one that plays without a guild. I do so because my primary reason for joining a guild in the past has always been to raid. The social aspects follow naturally when there’s a common goal. I play PvE primarily and GW2 has nothing that makes me feel like I need a guild (bounties don’t do it for me) so I don’t bother. A GW2 guild just feels like a large chat room.
I also don’t respond to guild invitation whispers though most people don’t even bother to whisper they just shoot invites out to somebody they’ve never played or talked with. I don’t feel like it’s any lack of courtesy on my part when I don’t respond to whispers or decline random invites.
What a crock.
I run CoE a lot and most of those runs had first timers in them
Just like the people who taught you were no doubt sick of you. Oh, that’s right, you always knew how to play this game. It’s in your blood. You were born to play GW2, run CoE1, and everyone else was given that same option in the womb too, but they chose to be good at other things, those rapscallions. Yeah, I can see where you’re coming from, forget I said anything.
Straw man. My desire to play with people who already know the dungeon doesn’t mean I expect everybody to know everything right off the bat. My post had the theme of “I got sick of” which means I did all those things many times and I still do those things since people don’t have the courtesy to not join a group looking for experienced players or at least vocalize that they don’t know what to do. Usually you only find out after they’ve dragged an abomination onto the group or mess up a 1-4.
Also, I ran CoE and other dungeons when the game first came out. They were very different experiences back then and nobody in my groups knew what to do. Besides that, we weren’t looking to run the dungeons as quickly or efficiently as possible. When I do a dungeon path I’ve never been to before I always tell my group and I’m more cautious in my play. I don’t run ahead into rooms for example.
I’m not sure why you seem so outraged that I wouldn’t want to tutor people in every group if I can help it. People have all sorts of standards for groups in every game and I haven’t always fit the mold, but nobody is entitled to any group. I don’t have standards for classes, just experience, and it’s not like I can even enforce that in groups anyway.
(edited by OnionXI.6735)
What a crock.
I run CoE a lot and most of those runs had first timers in them and I got sick of it. I got sick of explaining every boss fight. I got sick of telling somebody to run left through a door only to have them aggro a champion. I got sick of explaining how to dodge only to see repeated failure entice group members to get themselves killed reviving on Alpha. I got sick of people not being able to hit a button at the same time even after explaining it to them.
So yeah, I look for experienced players only. Want to know the best part? Even though I post “be experienced” in lfg I still get first timers who haven’t got a clue.
Btw, I’m fairly skeptical of TESO’s ability to not flop (I’ll still try it later). Any other recommendations?
Apart from what’s already out, WildStar looks like it’ll keep the trinity system for the most part.
The nice thing with GW2 is it’s not an either/or proposition when it comes to other MMOs.
