Well, I dunno…I’m 51 years old and my main character is my engineer, I’ve never had any problems playing her. Of course, that may in large part be because I use my flamethrower kit the majority of the time and all you have to do with that one is, most of the time, hammer 1 to barbecue your opposition.

If you do go mesmer, don’t be afraid to stand up in there with sword. By that I mean at least give it a shot, you have “Blurred Frenzy” on a very quick 12s(9.5 traited) reuse, that’s a 1.5s evade, really powerful.

OP here. Thanks a TON to you all for the great suggestions. I have a lot to consider now (which is great fun).

I think I’ll try out a GS Mesmer and PS Warrior first, based solely upon all of your suggestions. Then maybe a LB Ranger and Staff Guardian. Finally maybe I’ll try a Staff Ele if I’m feeling brave.

Now to look up some builds for all of the above….

Hi all,

I’ve toyed with a number of builds and professions, and though I enjoy them all, the game is very-much designed for young folk with fast reflexes. I just tried CoF last night with a PUG and died 10000000 times. It was fun, but I could’ve helped my group more, I think, should I have had a good, easier, ranged build (I ran it as an 80 D/F Necro).

Any suggestions? It seems all Elementalist builds require a boatload of weapon swapping and dodging, which I just don’t think I can manage much of. And Engineers, though, fun, also appear a bit too…complex for this old man.

I’m a returning player who has an 80 Ranger, but honestly, the pet coding is so bad, I thought I’d try a Thief. Any chance there’s a good solo PvE build for a ranged Thief? Or are they primarily melee?

I’m one of apparently many returnees, inspired by news of the upcoming xpac. I haven’t played in well over 1.5 years, and feel incredibly lost. I had a new 80 Guardian when I left, and I’m enjoying exploring Dry Top and Prospect Valley now.

However, I’m lost just how I should progress and acquire better weapons and armor. I have blue/green trash, with only a piece or two of “Soldiers” oj armor. And I can’t recall how I acquired that Soldiers armor.

How can I go about slowly acquiring new pieces? I was told to go get Berzerker armor, too, but I’ve NO clue how/where to do that. I don’t craft, I don’t dungeon crawl, I just enjoy solo PvE exploring and eventing and karma farming, etc.

I’ve been gone for a year and a half or so, but saw the news of an xpac which looked interesting, so I’m back to relearn the game!

I have an 80 Guardian I really like simply for RP/aesthetic reasons. I just logged in and noticed he’s GS/Staff, but I’ve no clue anymore how those play.

I have NO clue how to play at all, heh, but I look forward to relearning.

Might I solicit advice on/links to:

a) a good solo PvE build
b) a good WvW zerg build

I’m not looking for FOTM OPness, just some good places to start relearning my class by using good builds.

I’ve been slowly acquiring some PVT oj temple pieces, but I’m far from “geared.” But my small guild is starting to want to run dungeons, and I’d like to be able to stand up and meatshield as best I can for them to dps. I’m currently specced for Sword+Torch (Right Hand Strength), but don’t think this is the best build for tanking. Surely a _ + Shield spec would be better (Mace maybe)?

I know it can be rather situational, but for the random dungeon PUG, what’s the best way to run a Guardian? When I solo PvE I run Sw+T, so I’m traited for that. Is this a good/viable dungeon build, too? This would have me tanking a bit in the dungeon; perhaps I should go Staff and be more support?

Our guild is young, with 2 80s, a 70+, and some 50s. What is the first dungeon we should try? Our 80s have only unlocked a few of the early story modes, and are only geared a tad.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. We really want to see some dungeon content, but don’t want to get in too far over our heads.

I’m old, I have !@#$ reflexes, but I had a blast in WvWvW tonight. It really is a kick. I like following the commanders and staying at 1500 max range.

Any tips which profession I should focus on for a while? I enjoy my Engineer, Ele and Ranger all pretty much equally, but I can’t decide which one to main for a bit, while I learn the ropes. Do any of these professions shine in WvWvW over the others?

I rolled an Ele day 1 of launch, and never got into it. I recently tried again thanks tosome good advice here and in /map, and tried D/D. While it was pretty powerful, I simply like range better as a playstyle.

So, can someone please suggest a viable Staff build for PvE questing (and maybe some occasional WvWvW)? Oh, and I don’t think I want to be too glass cannon squishy.

I have personally witnessed c. 1:49 pm PST the player EDIT TO REMOVE NAMES on Sea of Sorrows teleporting somehow (supposedly using a map hack) to appear at a node, get the wood, and teleport away.

Cheaters kitten me off and more importantly ruin a game’s economy.

How can I report this player please?

Hi all,

I’m trying to get my wife into WvWvW. I think she’ll like it, she loves PvE with all different professions and builds. However WvWvW is a different monster, and I don’t want her to get overwhelmed too fast and dislike it.

Is there a FOTM prof/build that won’t necessarily be OP, but will be able to hold its own in joining the zerg, perhaps from the back lines?

My Necro is only 60, and I know I still have a lot to learn, but I feel much too much of a meleer, whereas I’d prefer to be more of a ranged profession.

I’m currently running a Dagger/WH + Staff build, with marks and wells traited, and though I love using wells, it seems the staff is quite horrible and slow dps, and the D/WH is stylistically too melee for me.

Are there any viable PvE builds that feel more ranged? A Scepter build maybe? I don’t HATE using D/WH + Staff, but it’s not ideal for me.

Or perhaps I should just suck it up and go PBAoE melee + wells….

Any thoughts?

Hi all,

I’ve had my Engineer shelved since launch, but kitten I want to like the profession! I love grenades in WvWvW, but even with ground mouse targeting on, I still think they’re just too clunky.

I tried Rifles, but the DPS and attack speed was slow and a bit painful.

So someone suggested dual pistols. I’m liking them a bit, and thought I’d ask if there’s a good PvE build out there I should look at, to ensure my traits and skills and gear are optimized for pistols.

I’m only in my 60s, and I’m just returning after a long absence, but I want to commit to a build now that I’ve unlocked my last set of traits.

1. I don’t want to be a glass cannon. (sure I like to pew pew, but I fully realize things go south more often than not, and would like some survivabilty).
2. I want to use a bow (I like ranged, it’s a simple playstyle choice, not to disparage Rangers’ melee abilities).
3. I’d like to be viable in PvE, primarily, and WvW, secondarily.

I’d really appreciate any links to builds that might fit the above bill.
