Well tonight I came across 3 level 80 thieves taking out one of our supply camps in WvW. They had the supervisor down and the only npcs left were a guard and a scout. I took them all out with my Guardian. However I know how to handle thieves as I have a level 80 thief of my own. The easiest way to find the weakness of a particular class is to play that class.
Yeah guardians are very good at countering thieves if you know guardian well (and thief knowledge helps too). Their ability to survive a massive burst and recover from it makes them ideal. Plus they have pretty good cc especially for groups.
Great points by both Theftwind and NinjaEd, I think I’m starting to see.
I was having issues and contacted my mouse manufacturer (Razer). This is the instruction I got back..perhaps something there might help you.
Try checking your usb
power settings. Follow the steps below
> * Right click on the My Computer icon and choose Properties.
> * Click on the Hardware tab.
> * Click the Device Manager button.
> * Click on the + sign next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
> * Right click on any Root Hub and choose Properties.
> * Click the Power Management tab and make sure there is NO CHECK in “Allow computer to turn off this device to save power”
> * Click the OK button and do this for each Root Hub.
> * Next, click on Start and Control Panel.
> * Double click on Power Options.
> * Click the Hibernation Tab and uncheck Enable hibernate support.
>4) Does the
mouse appear in the device manager? Please check if the mouse is
detected there.
Thanks, I followed your suggestions first, didn’t help my situation, but, I think it could fix someone else’s. +1
This happens to users with more than 1 screen who play GW2.
How to reproduce:
While playing in full screen mode put your mouse on the edge between GW2 screen and another screen.
Then hold a mouse button and drag your mouse onto the other screen.
Your mouse is now on the other screen.
Any click will put you onto desktop. This problem is well known and got reported many times but as we all know ANet doesn’t care.
A workaround is the programm Cursor Lock.
You can use that tool to lock mouse to programms and screens.
It checks the position every x milliseconds – I recommend 50ms or less.
Except for the “…Aet doesn’t care..” part, this was the best answer I got (see note), and, your solution is SPOT ON, works fine for me so far. I wonder why I couldn’t find it in the searches?
NOTE: I think they care, there’s just a lot to fix, and fixing things usually breaks something else that was not foreseen. I’m sure they’ll get to this eventually.
I edited this, I forgot to say, Thank You Kejima, great help!

Hey all, I searched the forums but haven’t found anything on this. I use the mouse with right/left click to maneuver a lot in game. Sometimes (not a lot), maybe once or twice in a couple hours of gaming, the mouse will totally escape the game and then the game will minimize (Desktop becomes Active). I did try disabling all non-essential services and application, including virus check, to see if one or the other was causing a window to become active, but it still happened. Has anyone else experienced this?
Not sure of your exact meaning there Rizzy… Didn’t ask for more skills, or to be able to kill anything easier, I asked for a slight nerf in existing skills of another class that basically is able to engage 3 or 4 other players, disappear, heal, then re-engage. How about, think, consider, then post?
you said ele or engi and you have a problem with thief? The only difference between what you just described what the thief can do and those 2 classes is that those 2 classes get invulnerabilities and are significantly tankier than the thief.
The ele has more heals, more cc, more build options, same spike, more mobility, more condition removal, better condition, good access to stability, more useful traits, more boons, etc.
The engi has more heals, more cc, more build options, similar spike (higher and lower), better conditions, can be an unkillable tank, good access to stability, ALSO HAS WIDE ACCESS TO STEALTH THROUGH TRAITS, can have perma 200% endurance regen, more boons, etc.
Now if you actually want help I’d suggest going to the thief forums where there are loads of people out there helping players learn how to vs thieves. The way you’re going on about it you probably won’t receive a warm welcome as we have recently been nerfed hard and that has only strengthened the OMG WE COMPLAINED ABOUT THIEF AND IT GOT NERFED SO COMPLAIN MORE AND GET NERFED MORE frame of mind.
Lastly, any class can engage a group of 5 and come out the victor. It’s all in how both sides played. Same reason why 2 eles can kite and kill a zerg. Good players will make strong classes look even stronger than they are.
hmmm, that makes sense, I somewhat disagree with “…the going about it…”, I mean, it is a game and a suggestion is only a suggestion, ppl seem as though it’s a personal insult, it’s hilarious and sad at the same time. I do; however, like the rest of your answer, it makes sense.
I see what you’re saying there ace… I am speaking of WvW and did not think of it in PvP or PvE arenas; however, any class (in WvW) where an individual can keep re-engaging over and over is ridiculous. I just watched such a match from a tower. 1 Necro, 1 War, and 1 Ele all attacking 1 Thief. For ~8 minutes, they all battled 3 v 1. No one died; the thief just kept disappearing, then healing, then re-engaging. Possibly applying such a nerf as mentioned previously only in WvW areas would be more appropriate?
Those three guys sucked. They sucked really bad.
Probably, would like to see it again, hopefully I will and I could record and look for failed counters or missed opportunities.
Correction BTW… My thief is lvl 16, forgot I had lvl’d up the other night.
NinjaEd,
It falls under players helping players because i had to change the title to un-hijack the conversation. I’ve already rolled a thief and am learning how one is played already. I don’t know if i can move the conversation; however, am not inclined to do so as there were people who seemed personally insulted by the original suggestion and I’m not going to give in to such draconian methods. But, i think you know that, you posted… “As the post stands, stop asking for nerfs, start asking questions on how to counter thief.”
Seriously dude, trying to establish dialogue with those who want to discuss rather than try and indicate some ulterior motive that they themselves feel someone else has… so please, quit trying to hijack the conversation. I am actually enjoying insights from the others, so please, just go away, or be constructive.
The only dialogue or rather monologue you’re trying to achieve is how you feel justified on nerfing another class because your skill level isn’t on par with another player.
I’ve been killed by really good Thieves who know how to cut down my mobility as an ele.
Am I complaining about Infiltrator’s strike?
No because those good thieves, know which skills a D/D ELE uses that really hurts and wait for me to use that when I’m at my most vunerable before coming in for the kill.
Does that mean Infiltrator’s strike is OP?
HELL NO.I aint by any means a “Pro Ele” but I’m smart enough to counter gimmicky builds that people use like using SHOCKING AURA when I get immobilized and cant move so my attacker if hes dumb enough to Melee me with a BACKSTAB gets stunned himself.
Dude, I actually enjoyed your last paragraph, can you try starting without the insults or insinuation, because those were false and have been. I use Shocking Aura on mine, run d/d with cc in that. I would just think that at some point, he wouldn’t be able to keep disappearing, like, maybe only when he’s at at least 50% or something. I don’t think he (the thief i got into the eternal battle with) was that good, because I’ve had other battles that after the 2nd or 3rd disappearance I was toast. And seriously, if the dialogue moves to convince me that it’s a non-sensical idea, I’m ok with that.
He shouldn’t be able to keep dissapearing?
Just like you shouldn’t be able to keep switching attunements?Lets face it, what does a thief do when they’re stealth?
NOTHING, they cant attack you.Stealth is a survival mechanic thieves.
Much like Water attunement is for Eles.Whats the difference between the 2?
You can change to Water Attunement every 7 seconds if you specced for and you can stealth every 3 seconds after opening an attack.
If you’re dying to Cloak and Dagger attacks only, seriously I need to do an obligatory laugh.
The moment a thief goes out of stealth as a D/D Ele you have SO MANY OPTIONS to CC them.
Frozen burst.
Earth skills 2 – 4
Updraft for when he comes close to Cloak and dagger.Hide in Shadows removes Conditions bleeding, burning and poison yes, but it does not remove cripple and it does not mean they cant be conditioned while they’re stealthed.
What do you think Fire skills 2 – 4 are for?
I usually use 2,3, then 4, switch to earth, 4 then 2 if he’s visible, switch to air for 3 if needed. But, it seems to make little difference.
face palm stop opening with fire.
Air is your closer and guarentees a thief cant smack you with CnD when you use shocking aura and switch to earth which cripples and damage them apon attunement change when you start to bleed them.Air attunement should be the attunement you stay on OOC.
Well, i’m not necessarily opening with fire, it depends on what I’m doing when it happens… so lets say, I am running with Air toward a tower our zerg may be attacking. We do the norm, build the siege etc., then I switch to fire to start the Might. Then I’m attacked in Fire so I’d do the 2-4. then start switching. Am I correct in assuming that you’d go straight to air, not working within current attunement first? I don’t normally switch to fire first, I was going off of your previous statement as to what 2-4 was for. Do you normally jump to Air regardless of current attunement?

As the post stands, stop asking for nerfs, start asking questions on how to counter thief. L2p.
Wana know how pathetic most thieves are? I watched one go stealth, on my warrior, and 2 seconds later I used Earthshaker. He appeared, stunned. Switch to lb (although other sources work too) and immobilized him. Then continued to smack him to death because he thought his glass cannon insta-gib build was gana work. Even a good thief isn’t that threatening, because they will likely burn their cd and/or initiative and become useless after that. You really have some problems if you think thief, the most nerfed profession in the game, is at all op. Point the finger at bunker ele and necro for being nearly unkillable.
That makes some sense, though, I merely suggested an idea, don’t think it’s right I can’t ask what I want on a particular post, I mean, one could simply not engage if they think it’s not worth their time. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve killed thieves and thieves have killed me, and necros, and warriors etc…. It just seems to me that the ability to stealth, many times over and over is a bit much. btw/// if it makes for less irritable comments I’ll edit the OP.
There we go, maybe more useful comments will pour in.

So you’re talking about the heal?
Well, I’m more talking about the ability to engage, heal, engage, heal.
I see it like this… as an ele, what if i was able to create an invulnerable shield, then I would heal while my invulnerable shield was up, then, my Invulnerable shield would recharge fairly quickly (based on skill allotment ofc), but until it did, i had a mini-invulnerable shield to keep me alive, allowing only a few seconds of dmg before I could then reuse my invulnerable shield. Would that be okay?
Oh come on. Stealth is not the same as invulnerability, by far. How about you try playing your thief outside of PvE?
I hear ya, perhaps not the best example… but since you can’t target them, then all the thief need do is move a slight distance away and they can’t be hurt, then, they move back in after healing. correct?
Also, as soon as I get to where I can wear decent armor and have the skills, my plan is to do wvw with mine.

Thought, considered & this is the post. Thieves are not OP at all. They are average in PvE, a bit annoying in WvW & an easy kill in PvP. If you’re next question is if I play a thief, than the answer is no not anymore. They already got nerfed by increasing their revealed time I don’t see why Thieves should get another nerf towards their stealth ability.
No, I don’t really care if you play a thief, i mean, we can all play a thief, I currently have an Engineer (80), Elementalist (80), and am working on… wait for it…. Thief (11). Even at level 11 I can play my thief in PvE with very little threat of dying, i just disappear and heal up, then go at it again. I’m just thinking it’s not really balanced.
LOL
Because level 11 zones are so hard.Point of thread – Nerf thieves so I can kill em easier plox.
Your not really into having a conversation about things are you? You should really be put on some sort of “I have nothing but unsubstantiated insulting remarks” list.
Oh I am, trust me I’m actively conversing with thieves on the thief forums and I dont even main a thief.
But all I see here is you, complaining about how an already easy to kill class is OP because you lack the skills to flush them out when they’re invisible because you dont know the difference between inVISIble and inVINCIble.
lol, you are a troll, go away, or better yet, show me your thief killing skills so I can learn something then.
LOL here goes the
“You’re trolling because your points are actually based on logic and mine are based off my feelies”And I’m the one whose not interested in having a conversation. LOL.
lol, ignoring your constant previous insulting mannerisms… seriously dude, let the grown-ups talk now.

Oh stealth makes you invincible now? O.O
Wow that… is OP indeed.Wow you mean like when you use Obsidian flesh and a heal at the same time? Oo
I mean 30 seconds to hide in shadows for a thief is just WAAAAAY too OP right, should be once every 50 seconds like obsidian flesh. :>
Lets just take it out of the game completely :>
Wow, really, i was just using it as an example, as ele’s and engi’s don’t have stealth, well, engi does if you use smoke bomb and a Bomb or Sheild; but, dude really, you got stealth makes you invincible out of that?
Also, I’m working on a thief now, and I do not have 30 second recharges bc of my skill allotments.
Orly?!
Do pray tell what the recharge for Hide in Shadows is for you, considering you’re level 11 and only have 1 trait point. :>
Because I’m about to call shenanigans here.
Uhh, because Hide in Shadows isn’t the only skill i use.

Maybe the problem here is the acronym OP. So, i’ll say it like this. If a character, in WvW, can stand against 3 to 4 other players, and, basically disappear and heal, disappear and heal, rinse and repeat, over and over while re-engaging, that’s not just annoying, it’s ridiculous. I watched this happen, and have been in these battles. I was engaged by a thief while playing my ele. Same thing, over and over, for like 9 minutes. I basically got tired of the fight, then he chased me, forever, with crips and backstabs until i finally just stopped, let him kill me, and then wp’d to another location. If OP is overkill, then annoying is an understatement.
The only way a Thief is going to face 3 to 4 people and not die is if
- The group is disorganised
- The group lacks CC
- The group consists of mostly upleveled characters
Not true at all, I’ve watched it plenty of times, I’ll try to record the next one.
However; couple questions. So, do you think that it’s ok that a group has to be organized to take down a single character? I did not lack CC skills in my run-ins, however; i also did not skill to have inordinate amounts of them either; meaning, I did not try to just be a thief killer. You’re not suggesting that are you? The group did not consist of mostly up-leveled characters, only way i could prove that i guess would be to try and catch one on video, I’ll give that a shot.
So you’re talking about the heal?

General PvE, especialy while lvl’ing, yup thief(especialy compared to Ele/Engi) is alot easier.
Go do dungeons, A war can do alot more dmg and wistand alot more. Thiefs are getting one of the weakest classes in the game, they are annoying in wvw, idd, but not op.
I suggest all Mesmers shouldn’t be able to use clones, rly annoying, eles shouldn’t be able to be a Cannon(they aren’t glass at all), necros shouldn’t have marks/wells or pets, those are really annoying, the same with the ranger pet and it’s aoe’s. Guardians shouldn’t take a hour to kill, wariors should do less dmg in general PvE, engis turrets are really annoying aswell, so are his mines and most of it’s kits, remove them.
but still always the thief, People don’t have a problem with Spies in Tf2, they have alot more stealth, transform into allies and 1-shot people, The GW2 thief has very limited stealth, can’t turn into allies and don’t 1-shot most people(if you are glass cannon in WvW, well yeah)
I’dd say the problem lies with: the people who don’t play thiefs and A-net for giving into these people.

Put in a PvP/PvE skill split before we start nerfing professions that aren’t yet on par with the Warrior, please. -1
So, in this sentence, are you saying this like puhleeeeaaasse? If so, are you saying that the Thief is not on par with the Warrior, as in the Warrior is more powerful than a thief as it exists today?
I see what you’re saying there ace… I am speaking of WvW and did not think of it in PvP or PvE arenas; however, any class (in WvW) where an individual can keep re-engaging over and over is ridiculous. I just watched such a match from a tower. 1 Necro, 1 War, and 1 Ele all attacking 1 Thief. For ~8 minutes, they all battled 3 v 1. No one died; the thief just kept disappearing, then healing, then re-engaging. Possibly applying such a nerf as mentioned previously only in WvW areas would be more appropriate?

Not sure of your exact meaning there Rizzy… Didn’t ask for more skills, or to be able to kill anything easier, I asked for a slight nerf in existing skills of another class that basically is able to engage 3 or 4 other players, disappear, heal, then re-engage. How about, think, consider, then post?
I’ve reported this as well, has anyone heard about a fix or at least maybe removing it or changing it to something else? It’s kind of a farce right now, a waste of build time.
