You shouldnt have to spend any money on a new OS. When you get a Windows 7 license, it is valid for both 32bit and 64bit versions (infact you should have got a disc for both, unless you are using an OEM computer). You should be able to aquire a 64bit disc image legally, microsoft allow this, it’s just the license that cannot be redistributed.

Burn it off to a disc, install it, bob’s your uncle.

If the game was the problem, everybody would be having it. I personally haven’t lost any FPS recently, infact i think my FPS went up slightly, but again this could be a placebo change.

The issue is only affecting a few people, so it’s more likely something else running on their computer, overheating or some other factor.

GW2 Overheating GPUs

Refraction.1892

Frankly that’s impossible, being the game only pushes the GPU to around 40%. Just kick the fan up higher.

http://eu.evga.com/precision/

If your computer only uses 40% im very suprised. My GTX 570 uses 100% gpu usage. On the stock cooler i did reach 84c which is about normal for a stock nvidia cooler. Now using an Arctic Cooling one and only getting ~60c.

If your temperature is raising above 90c, id make sure the card fan isnt obstructed in any way and there is plenty of airflow in your case. You could even try running with the side of your case off, that should keep the inside reasonably cool.

You’re not helping anyone by holding steadfast to your impossible to prove conclusions that the game is absolutely at fault for your system fault.

Indeed. I could say my car got broken in to because i decided to have breakfast this morning. Completely unrelated events which just “happpened” to occur at the same time, doesn’t mean one caused the other.

Refraction.1892

80 degrees is about normal for a stock nvidia cooler. My 570 was running at around 84c at stock speeds on a stock cooler, Guild Wars 2 is one of the few games that maxes GPU usage for me, so i rarely see that in other games.

If you want to bring your temps down, id suggest getting an aftermarket cooler. I use an Arctic Accelero Turbo II on mine now, temps rarely go above 65ish.

I will note however, 80c isn’t dangerous for GPU’s, they can handle over 100c, it just runs noisy :P

whoa! nice overclock! How stable is that though? I have the i7 920 running at 3.8Ghz, voltage under stock but im still kicking out 70-77c under full load, i cant imagine what 4.2Ghz is doing :/

I also (by sheer chance) have the same card. Changing the following settings to what i suggest is recommended along with updating your drivers as Angelus mentioned.

Nvidia CP: Set everything to use application settings, you can use “high quality” texture quality settings if you wish.

Reflections: Terrain & Sky
Sampling: Native
Shadows: High

everything else can be maxed. I maintain pretty much 60fps with those settings.

Its incredible, even in a support job how many times you hear “since the last update, everythings slower” or “since the last update i have trouble going to the bathroom” etc.

This is a case of complete placebo. If your game is running slower when your cpu is overclocked, this means your CPU (or memory) is generating a LOT of errors or overheating.

I would suggest watching your temperatures, also make sure your memory isnt overclocked too far above spec, you may need to raise the voltage on your CPU/Memory to cope with the overclock. A game will never go

“If ( CPU = Overclocked ) Then Run.Slower” It’s just unfeasable to think so.

Firstly get a tool like gpu-z or msi afterburner or something and check your graphics card clock speeds. A lot of thse issues are caused by factory overclocked graphics cards which actually just cant cut the speed it’s being run at.

your core speed should be 810Mhz and your memory clock should be roughly 1001Mhz (before any multipliers). If it is any higher than this, clock it to these values and try the game again.

Not in guild wars :P Not many games use PhysX so its not really benificial. What i would suggest is look for reviews of the card you want to get and get the one which performs best out of your price range, some games prefer AMD to Nvidia and visa versa, so do some research before your purchase

This is a bug with the engine.

I “presume” what theyve done (from my limited directx programming knowledge), is theyve attempted to make things close to the camera invisible so you arent looking at a wall texture up close instead of your character. As an evil side effect of this, directx does some neat little tricks to say “if its behind stuff, no point rendering it” however it doesnt realise the texture that would probably have been infront of your face is transparent.

So long story short, its happening to pretty much everybody if you get the angle right, its not just you ;p

Refraction.1892

Just to be clear, the game cannot make your computer shut down, software can not cause this. Drivers can cause blue screens but nothing software based will make your computer turn off. (Apart from windows shutdown, before someone tries to be a smarty pants :P)

If it is just turning off like that, this is generally due to protection mechanisms kicking in.

The most likely one as others have said is power supply, if that gets overloaded or too hot it will power itself down to prevent itself from exploding, which would have done even more damage.

It is possible that other components like the graphics card or sound card “might” have something in place, but it’s unlikely. If these are the culprit, it’s more likely with heat expansion, it is causing a short which the power supply then responds with immediate shutdown.

I have the i7 920 currently clocked at 3.8Ghz (however it was 3.4Ghz for the majority of my playtime) and a GTX 570 and it is pretty darn smooth, bottoming out at 30-40fps but 60fps most of the time.

Only advice i can give is make sure you are running the 306.23 nvidia drivers (some have reported more fps with the 306.63 drivers which you can get from guru3d.com ) and make sure your shadows are set to high (not ultra), sampling is set to “native” and reflections are set to Terrain & Sky, not Reflect All. The latter here caused the biggest fps drops for me, especially in lions arch.

As above, your CPU is your bottleneck. Your GPU should be capable of much better speeds on them settings, but the Athlon II X2’s arent so powerful.

Its best to have a quad core cpu for this game of 3Ghz or higher, but with a newer architecture. Id recommend getting yourself an i5 either 2×00 series or 3×00 series. If you can get on with a “K” on the end youll be able to bump it up between 4-5Ghz for extra speed

the LAA flag is ultimately ignored in 32bit operating systems by default, however you can get it to have “some” effect by enabling whats called the “3GB flag”

If you google “3GB Flag your operating system 32bit” so for example “3GB Flag Windows XP 32bit” it will tell you how to enable it.

Mounts [Merged]

Refraction.1892

I would like to see mounts or something similar in the game, especially when you are farming materials it can take a very long time to get around. Using waypoints is fine and all, but early on in the game especially, you have to go some considerable distances from the main cities to the area you are questing in which can get expensive for somebody who’s leveling; money can be hard to come by unless you are really good with the trading post.

I can understand why people don’t want mounts and i agree they can be a bit out of place, but it would be good to have the ability to run around, almost like a speed boon aura or something.

I guess if there was the boon aura idea you could have a “knocked down if hit” style downside to it so people don’t attempt to use it to run past mobs etc.

Option to turn off "double tap" dodging

in Suggestions

Posted by: Refraction.1892

Refraction.1892

Sorry if this has already been suggested (or if the option exists id be glad to be pointed to it!).

I have grown acustom to using V+Direction to dodge out of the way, i find it much more responsive than double tapping the direction key to dodge, however, this is not my biggest gripe with it.

The problem comes when you are carefully edging along a thin platform and you are carefully tapping a direction key to move foward slightly, then because you have tapped it too quickly, you roll off and fall flat on your face and have to start again lol.

So what i’d like to see is an option to disable the double tap dodging so i can hope around tiny edges without a worry :P

If you don’t have 64bit windows you can follow this guide to enable the 3GB flag on windows 7 32bit: http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=9583842&linkID=9240697 (you will have to copy and paste, apparently the forum redirect kills the link)

That will allow applications to use up to 3gb instead of 2gb on 32bit windows.

then use this on your gw2.exe http://ntcore.com/files/4gb_patch.zip

Which enables GW2 to use that space.

Hope that helps

Before you go reapplying thermal pastes, i would check the heatsink/fan end of your laptop and make sure there isnt a layer of blanket dust between the fan and the heatsink.

You will probably have to remove the base of your laptop to get to this but im afraid there is no easy solution. Only other things you can do is get yourself a nice cooling mat for your laptop and make sure you only use it on a solid surface. Resting a laptop directly on your lap or on a cushion or sofa or anything will cause it to overheat.

memory leak..?

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Refraction.1892

Refraction.1892

Its not a memory leak, its an Nvidia issue. Your FPS (generally when going between loading/2d screens and ingame 3d) will drop as your nvidia card sticks in 2d clock speeds.

Alt+Tab forces it back to 3d clock speeds. The only temporary fix ive found is in your global nvidia 3d settings, set “power management” to “Prefer maximum performance”, reboot, itll never happen again.

Otherwise i find your comments bit useless here ^^

nope, thats about right for your card. have a look at this chart, of course its slightly dependant on your cpu also but your card is “roughly” that of the 440, possibly slightly less if it has GDDR3 memory on it. 50fps on low is about right for your card.

Why bother using super sampling? There is hardly a difference between that and native.

Super sampling makes a very big difference for distance textures, i noticed a huge decrease in jagged lines on distant textures such as wooden plank walkways in Lions Arch with it on (using 1680×1050). If you can do it and maintain a good 30fps throughout, it is nice to have on, but of course native doesnt do a bad job mostly.

Wierd colours and stuff like that is usually either a fault of bad video memory, overheating or unstable overclocks (some manufacturers factory overclock cards to gain advantage over the competition, but sometimes it doesnt work so well)

Its potentially possible that arena net did some changes which improved interaction with other players or how they were rendered on your machine, or even possibly the artwork was improved or extra caching techniques were put in place to try and increase performance, but caused other machines to suffer.

On the other hand, it could just be a bug that has been introduced, if this is the case then im sure Arenanet will hunt it down and fix it. Stuff like this where it is okay in some cases and not in others is a bit of a pig to diagnose.

What are your framerates like if you use the “low” presets? if its extremely fast id suggest playing with the options and see if any has a dramatic performance increase/decrease.

One thing i noticed yesterday was i have Anistropic Filtering forced to x16 in the nvidia CP, pretty much rendering the “Best Texture Filtering” option completely useless. Disabling this ingame pretty much gives me a free 10fps in Lions Arch
