I like outputting damage, so like many engineers I went with a Grenade build. The Grenadier trait at 30 Explosives combined with the crits from Firearms is a fearsome combination. I also like 10 Tools just for the Kit Refinement perk (which comboes really well with Elixir Gun), but that can wait until you’re a higher level if you go with a Grenade build.

Yea, engi has kits, but then Warrior has meele weapons, like GS…

Does the GS have a 1500 range?

Well, it wouldn’t be melee if it had 1500 range.

Anycase, Toolkit and Bomb Kit count are the Engineer’s “melee” kits. I personally use the Bomb Kit to great effect close-range, what with the smoke field, confusion bomb, and Big Ol Bomb.

If you’re only looking at the Rifle (and/or Pistol), then yes the Warrior far outperforms the Engineer in terms of DPS. But the real DPS from the Engineer comes from the Weapon Kits (Grenade/Bomb/Flamethrower), which can deal at least 2x the damage that Pistols/Rifles can on average.

Traits to maximize damage output, with Toughness/Vit supplied by the equipment. Pistol Flameblast combos with the Flamethrower Napalm or Bomb Kit Fire Bomb for a high damage long duration burn. Grenades and Flamethrower hand out criticals like nobody’s business, and the grenades also cause lots of vulnerability. Each of the weapons contains a blinding skill, which helps a lot.

My grenades do at least 3x the damage my rifle/pistol can, so I’m not really seeing a need for the damage to increase. I would like to see sigils/stats from the weapon work with the kits though.

Grenade Kit - Better under or over water?

I think it is fine as it currently is. Given the 3D nature of the underwater combat, I’m pretty sure it is impractical for them to program ‘ground’ targeting underwater. That, and grenade kits are incredibly powerful underwater as it is.

The reason grenades are ground targeting on land is so that you can throw them where the monster is ‘going’ to go. It would be hard to get all grenades to land at 1500 range when the monster is running towards you while the nades are in the air.

Conditions that Stack Duration uses the highest value for the entire combined duration. Thus it is best to combine skills that provide low damage long duration with high damage short duration for maximum benefit.

Give it 2-3 weeks for a good number of bugs to be squashed out. Each and every single online game always launches with some bugs, and GW2 is no exception.

Ascalonian Catacombs is notoriously difficult, especially for being the first dungeon people have access to. The other dungeons aren’t nearly as difficult. It just takes patience, teamwork, and a lot of repairs to get through the Catacombs.

Weapon Kits far outstrip the normal Rifle/Pistols in terms of DPS, so it is generally better (from my experience) to consider one of those as your “main” weapon, and use Rifle/Pistols for Kiting/Condition damage on the side. Flamethrower, Grenades, and Bomb kits are your damage dealers.

I am currently a level 77 Sylvari Engineer, and I mainly use Grenades as my primary damage dealer. Using these (and being traited properly), I do at least 2x the damage my Pistol/Rifles do, to a group of monsters. I also like the Bomb Kit for the condition AoEs (Smoke Bomb in particular) and the Big Ol Bomb.

Regarding your question as for what goes with what (from my own experience):
Condition Damage goes with Flamethrowers/Pistols/Elixer Gun
Power goes with Grenades/Bombs (and Rifles, but you use them more for kiting; for the record Rifles only use power, with the exception of the small Bleed damage tacked onto Skill 3)
Elixer Gun is good support for any build
Turrets are okay if you properly trait for them (basically the Inventions trait line)
Underwater, Grenades are incredible

Healing Turrets should be picked up/detonated immediately after use, since the self-heal only occurs when it is placed. It does not (from what I can tell) heal others with a big chunk of health; it only heals others through Regeneration.

The normal weapons Pistol/Rifle fulfill more of a utility role for the Engineer, compared to how the other classes use weapons. Yes, they can deal damage, but my experience has been mainly using them for the crowd control abilities, then switching over to the Weapon Kits. The Weapon Kits for Engineer fulfill the role normal weapons do for other classes, as in they output a lot of damage.

Though we don’t get stats from the weapons, Weapon Kits seem to output a lot more damage than the rifle/pistols.

Does anyone know how/if rune effects that trigger upon weapon switching work for the engineer? The one time I tried testing this by equipping/unequipping a weapon kit, nothing happened, so I’m not sure if it is intentional or a bug.

I’m a level 72 Engineer, and I have been rolling with a Critical Grenade build for PvE.

Skills:
Med Kit/Healing Turret
Proximity mine
Bomb Kit
Grenade Kit

Traits:
30 Explosives: Bigger Bomb/Mine Radius, 10% more explosion dmg, Grenadier
22 Precision (to be 30 at 80): Knee Shot, 50% chance for vuln on crits
10 Invention: 5% of Toughness converted to Power

One of the perks in the explosion tree (at 25) is to apply vulnerability for each explosion for 5 seconds. Combined with Grenadier tossing out 3 grenades and a decent crit chance and the above precision perk, you can maintain a stack of 20+ vulnerability.

Starting out though, you just need to get through the first few levels when you have nothing but your pistol/rifle, to when you get your weapon kits (flamethrower)/turrets to be more effective.
