Where is it supposed to be?

No more LW jumping puzzles Anet

in Living World

Posted by: Seb.2053

Seb.2053

I want you to promise me Anet, that you will never implement a jumping puzzle through Living World content ever again.
Because you have proven that you are really bad at quality-testing your LW content before it needs to be kicked out the door to make sure that the player base stays somewhat engaged.
I can handle this for the most part:
-story is kind of lackluster, w/e
-combat here clearly wasn’t polished—I’ll just bring a friend to overcome any silliness.

But I refuse to deal with this in jumping puzzles, because you do not fix LW content. You can’t seem to afford to with how hectic content production is.

Not So Secret is a terrible piece of content, not the puzzle itself mind you, that’ s only intermediate to hard difficulty and doesn’t bother me in the slightest. It’s the endless army of mobs you put in my way.
And I don’t mean the ones on the ship, oh no. They’re annoying, but I’ve dealt with killing mobs in puzzles before.

No, it’s those ranged you put down in the pit, whose aggro range allows them to see and shoot you while you’re on the pillars, before realizing they shouldn’t, dropping out of combat, and then reorienting on you again. Which over time will kill you (especially when there are multiples), and you can’t ignore them because even with a speed boost the combat slow is enough that you won’t be able to make the final jump onto the u-pipe to head into the next section.
You can’t even kill them because they’ll drop out of combat and immediately heal and become impossible to hit from afar because the game thinks you’re trying to cheese its mobs. Even if you jump down and kill the, by the time you finish that and get all the way back up again, you’ll need to clear the ship again, and by the time you’re done with that, the mobs in the pit will have respawned and you’re back where you started.

There’s only two puzzles in this game I haven’t completed, Not So Secret is one of them and it’s definitely the most broken puzzle I’ve ever seen in GW2.

Are Charr tails being fixed?

I’m not sure, but I think some leg armor might now be compatible with Charr tails that wasn’t before.
I really hope so. If the Vigil armor became compatible with Charr tails, I would finally be able to stomach it. It’s a lot easier to get than most other nice-looking armors (for transmutation that is).

The math of selling vs salvaging rares?

Obviously the profit shifts depending on the market, so does anyone know a formula that would allow you to determine, whether it’s more profitable to salvage or sell lvl 80 rares?
I’m not sure how to account for the random chance of 0-3 ectos.

ETA: Assume a 50% chance salvage kit.

Problem in design philosphy

The jumping puzzle and boss examples are merely that, examples. The point I’m trying to make is just that ANet seems to have had moments where they based challenges on stubbornness, luck, or as you pointed out, near exploitative behavior, rather than on something like skill or strategy.
ETA: Even if you know the path to take on Griffonhook, the griffons can still screw you up if they choose not to do their wind-up attack first. And on CCC, the portal have the ability to cause you to miss jumps by triggering AS you jump.

The sad part is that the bosses that do require some form of strategy are often exploited through as well. The Shatterer or The Claw of Jormag for example, could be so much more intense, and much more group-oriented, if they weren’t capable of being exploited as most people currently do.

I don’t know why it’s so difficult for GW2 to implement strategy either. I remember a blog post from some time ago (before release) where the devs talked about roles, and the game still possessed a trinity of sorts, just under a different name (or at least it was supposed to . . .)

Problem in design philosphy

in Suggestions

Posted by: Seb.2053

Seb.2053

So I’m noticing what seems to be a recurring problem in GW2 design. It’s where challenges are presented that are a matter of stubbornness and/or luck, as opposed to skill or learning strategies.
A prime example is something like the Chaos Crystal Cavern jumping puzzle. A player’s success on that puzzle is purely a matter of luck—what debuffs they’re given, and what mobs have been spawned in below. Griffonhook Run has a similar problem, you can’t get that much better at doing it, you just have to hope you can get lucky and the griffons don’t choose to attack you in certain ways to avoid dropping the bomb.

You see the problem in some boss design too, like, say Kudu’s second golem in SE story. It’s attacks cause burning, and they’re almost all ranged AoE. So you can’t really get that much better at it. It’s really just a matter of hoping you have healing/condition removal or are otherwise lucky in how player’s have their skills set up.

And I think these kind of design choices are part of the reason why people are so intent on finding ways to circumvent parts of dungeons and other events. They look at these challenges, and realize on some level that it’s not something they can really improve at, it’s just a matter of beating their heads against a wall (so to speak) until something gives. So they try to find ways around the walls instead (and sometimes they do, literally).

A few questions and concerns about WvW

in WvW

Posted by: Seb.2053

Seb.2053

First, the questions:
*How are badge of honor drops determined? Is it just like in PvE and based on how much damage you do to the enemy, or what?
*I get that the Repel event is there to lock down WP so that attacking a place with one is actually feasible, but is it supposed to be capable of abuse as it seems like I’ve seen it, with people just attacking enough to activate it and then running off and repeating it to keep the WP from ever being used?

Concerns:
*AoE, and especially the cata attaking through gate is pretty BS. If people really want to do that, then ANet should turn on friendly-fire, they want to shoot catapult shots at their own gate or other abilities, they should take the damage for it as well.
*Siege inside a fort is fine. Siege on top of roofs inside said fort . . . no. Siege should require at least a semi-flat surface. None of this putting it on top of the supply roofing.

I’m not sure if this is intentional, but it appears that if you have Swiftness from Signet of Inspiration, further Swiftness buffs will not stack in duration.

ETA: However, it appears that if you have a Swiftness boon, and then Signet of Inspiration procs Swiftness, duration will stack.

[February] Issues with character art, weapons, or armor?

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Seb.2053

Female Charr Warrior
Legion Hauberk has this orange-brown coloring near the shoulders/neck, and I’m not sure if it’s intentional or some kind of graphical issue.

Also, I know you said that you didn’t mind minor clipping, but I think greatswords on Charr could use some adjustment, because just about every greatsword (save for the very thinnest) clips with their tails.
My ideas were to either simply move greatsword on Charr higher up their back, and more into the neck, which wouldn’t be that noticeable on a Charr given how smoothly their backs and necks flow together, or the greatswords could stay where they are, and simply be tilted more horizontally.

Asura have some severe issues with their hands clipping into their leg armor outside of combat. It’s most noticeable with Light Armor: http://www.gw2armorgallery.com/asura-light.htm

Optimizing equipment?

in Suggestions

Posted by: Seb.2053

Seb.2053

Are there any plans to optimize equipment further? Especially to decrease clipping issues with bodies?

The Charr and Asura in particular have issues with their armor.
Examples:
Charr head pieces should be modified so that they can either recognize the presence of horns, or if that’s not possible, the pieces should be altered so they either have room for horns and ears, or they cover them completely.

Asura seem to have a lot of problem with their hands and leg armor. Not sure of a solution.

Greatswords on Charr should be angled more horizontally, so that they don’t look like they’re cutting off the tails.

Why bother with a Gathering system if players are just gonna grind money instead and then buy their ingredients?

because you need lvl 400 in a crafting skill to create legendarys and other unique weapons in the mystic forge.

Also crafting provide an alternative route to maxing your character level.

Did I mention all crating skills is pretty much obselete due to too many people have 400 in all crafting skills ? unless you want a quick level, a legendary or another unique weapon skin the crafting skills serve no purpose at this point.

I don’t see a connection between my question and your answer.

If getting the gold to buy materials from the TP is easier than just gathering them, then I think it’s indicative of a fairly serious issue.

Especially in armorsmith and weaponsmith.
I’ve been working on those two since level 1, and I’m level 80 now, but have yet to get either past 150.

I am full on some higher end materials, especially wood and ores, but I can’t make use of them because I never got enough lower-end stuff to get my crafting to higher levels.
Which just leaves me to grind low-end zones.

Why do I need to spend time grinding away at these zones? Why can’t they just make it so that by the time you hit 80, if you’ve been gathering resources as you come along them and making stuff with them, you’ll be close or at max crafting level?

Why am I spending all this time and all these materials on low to mid-level recipes that no one will ever use for any significant period of time?

Limit to player movement speed?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Seb.2053

Seb.2053

I have a Signet of Air (25% increase to movement), Zephyr’s Speed (10%), One With Air (25%), and then I can also cast Windborne Speed for another 33%.
If I used everything, I should have a 93% movement speed increase, but . . . it doesn’t feel that way. And it doesn’t look that way either when I run with other people. I should be easily outpacing most, but I’m not, which leads me to believe there’s some kind of cap to how much movement speed can increase.
Anyone know if this is the case?

Experience calculation from personal story

in Personal Story

Posted by: Seb.2053

Seb.2053

So I was looking at the guild wars wiki page on experience, and I wanted to check I understood. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Experience
It says that personal storyline instances give 27% of the event level.
Assume that it’s, a level 40 story quest, and the experience needed to fill the experience bar at level 40 is 31,000 exp, does this mean I get 8,370 experience, regardless of my character’s level at the time?

The reason I want to know is because I’m trying to figure out what level I could start doing personal story quests at that would allow me to do nothing but personal story, and his level 80 by the time I finish with them.
I imagine it would be pretty high, at least in the 60’s.

Some suggestions for WvW

in WvW

Posted by: Seb.2053

Seb.2053

*There needs to be a place for melee. As it is, playing as melee in WvW is a great way to lose money via repairs. Forget sieges, all combat degenerates into ranged AoE spam. This means that the battles line are always standing apart, so there’s no way for melee to get involved without horribly overextending from the rest of the group.

*Correct me if I’m wrong, but population caps need to be altered. As it is they seem to simply put a population cap on each map area, but they don’t care who’s filling it. So you could have 499 of one realm, 1 of another, and 0 of the last, and the game would be fine with it (assuming 500 is the limit, I’m not sure). If it’s not already, put the map’s population cap to a certain number from each realm.

*There needs to be an incentive for players to enter WvW even when they’re losing or outnumbered. The Outmanned buff is weak stuff.

*Abilities need to stop being able to travel through the freaking walls and gates. That is so bloody stupid.
Case in point, AoE going both ways through gates ruins the ability to both repair and assault. Like today, the enemy team set up a catapult inside the tower and just kept launching it at the gate. Because it was theirs it did no damage to the gate, but its AoE would go right through and damage and throw everyone back o the other side. I refuse to believe that ANet wanted that kind of playstyle.)

*Walls should not instantly reappear as soon as someone taps it with a hammer, they need to hit a certain percentage before they come back.

So I found a somewhat hidden area behind the waterfall in Blazeridge Steppes that’s near the vista south of the Behem Gauntlet.
It goes a ways in until you reach a cavern with a veteran shark and some oozes, along with a ledge with bats that seems to be unreachable.
There’s a small passage in the water there that leads you down into water, then you go North and West a bit, then back up into another passage that just seems to be a dead end.
