Hey,
Haven’t played GW2 in almost 6 months, never really used condi mesmer before. I used to main a warrior (still do) and a ranger on the side. However, i want to give mesmer a shot, but i hate condition builds, no matter the profession.
So, i was just wondering if power mesmer is still viable/good ? GW, Sword/Pistol, Sword/Sword and Sword/Shield (never really tried shield)
I play mostly in PVE and WVW. Not so much of a Pvp/arena player.
Thanks
When i play on my warrior, i currently feel like i’m a legit bodybuilder, and everyone around me are on steroids. Even if you tried your best, you can’t compete.
You turn yourself into a avatar of a demon, it should not be taken lightly.
What if Embrace the darkness would pulse a random condition every sec, instead of torment. Might sound OP, but there’s so many conditions, it would be hard to stack the same condi on a single target, however, it would give something else than just torment.
If it’s too strong, you just adjust the interval of the pulse (2 sec instead of 1) or augment the energy cost.
On the other hand, if it’s too weak, you just remove certain condis from the list. Giving more chances of stacking a same condi.
Yup, i like it the way it is.
I usually do Axe 4, quick 180 of the camera followed by axe 5 + mace 2 or sword 3.
Not sure if it’s a bug or intended.
I just finished the quest, The Ghost of Rite. You know, the one you turn into the avatar of Balthazar and kill a lot of undeads. Since Revenant skills relies on legendaries, when you turn into Balty you lose your heal and utilities. I remember doing this quest in the past with my other characters and i had my utilities and my heal.
It’s not the end of the world, as you can see, i finished it, and being Balthazar is really fun. However, undeads will stack poison on you, and you have 0 ways to clear it out. So eventually, i died twice of poison.
Agreed, Dragon hunter should have a 25% movement speed.
If Mesmers can with Chrono, why not DH ?
I get it, Chronomancer plays with time, but then again, i can’t imagine a slow person fighting a dragon. You need to be agile and move around, unless you want your face melted.
That’s how i see it lol.
Also, right now, guardians/DH are the only ones without a speed buff, either by trait or utility, seems unfair.
Pretty much gonna repeat what Holland said.
Presuming you’re soloing, start with the following.
For weapons, Longbow + Greatsword. You can also use Sword + Axe, but sword is a bit tricky at first. Your main weapon will be the Longbow (pew pew)
As for your main pet, definitely go for a Brown bear ( found in Gendarran fields), they make good tanks.
Then for utility skills, just go for full signet, and Strength of the pack for elite. For healing, use Heal as one (will also heal pet), you can also use Healing spring for the lack of condi removal (early on)
First trait line that you should unlock is Beastmastery (making pet better) followed by Wilderness survival (good condi removal). Finally go with Marksmanship, for more dps.
That’s pretty much all you need for leveling to 80. Ranger is one of the easiest class to level thanks to the pets.
As for quick tips
I would avoid condi weapons for leveling.
Try not to aggro a large quantity of mobs. Your pet can only take so much.
Don’t let your pet die. Cooldown is longer than just switching pets. So pet management is the key.
If you’re doing world events, try to avoid doing #4 on your longbow (unless really needed).
I found this event really bad. First, it was too short, it should of been at least 1 week long.
As a husband, father and working man, I pretty much only had Saturday and Sunday to farm this event. Even then, I’m 65 blooms short of 450.
Second, lost of stacks were a real pain in the butt. I got disconnected at least 3 times during this event where I lost 15+ each time.
Lastly, the lack of gold and karma made the event tedious and felt more like a chore.
I wasted at least 1 gold, just by teleporting all over the map, killing stuff that gave 0 money back.
For future events like this one.
Please, do the following.
1. Make it last more than a few days.
2. Make it so that stacks last X-min on you even after disconnecting. So if you crash or for some reason got to logout for 5 min, you won’t start from scratch upon returning
3. Either make mobs drop or at the end of the event, you get a small reward of silver and karma.
Thing is, sword is more of a hybrid than a pure power or pure condi.
Main attack, is okish, if you’re full zerker, but subpar to Axe or even Mace. Final thrust will hit like a truck, but you gotta wait for your target to be 50%
2 is a leap, and 3 is pretty much a pure damage skill.
If you go full condi, the bleeds are decent, but you gotta spam Flury on cooldow.
Also, as a full condi, your final thrust will hit like a wet noodle.
However, it’s not a bad weapon, with Sinister gear, you can get a decent amount of direct damage + condi. Glad Anet came out with that gear, it makes the sword shine a little bit more. Try it out, the ascended trinkets are free if you do the achievements, and if you can’t afford to craft the armor, you can buy and mix zerker + rampager.
All that being said, the warrior’s ultimate weapon (like it or not)y is still the GS.
Feedback works fine, but as soon enemy players see the big pink dome around them, they just stop shooting or dodge out of it. Mimic was harder to notice. I really miss that skill. Even more now, with all the pew pew rangers out there.
So, what are your thoughts on the new adrenaline decay ?
I, myself find all the changes, ok and acceptable, except the adren decay. It’s way too fast, in my opinion. You kill a enemy, and you barely have the time to move to the next that your bar is going down. I’m not talking 10 sec away here, you have about 2 sec, after you killed a monster, before it goes down. I understand that they wanted to fix and prevent warriors from having a constant bar of adren with every new fight, but this is a way too harsh.
Congrats, i’ve also been playing since launch date, and i had so far 0 prec drop. Even after spending a crap load of stuff in the toilet.
Been playing for 2+ years, and still have 0 legendary to my name
Once a mesmer pumps 3 phantasms up, they can have similar results as a warrior (zerker). However, depending on the location and situation, clones tend to die fast.
Warrior on the other hand has a steady dmg. If you can have a perfect rotation with GS + Axes (or A/M) the damage is very good. However, mesmers have better ways to nullify attacks.
Both are good at giving boons. Where the mesmer shines is with all the reflections, stealth and of course, portal. Both are great and will come down to how good you play them, and how much you like their styles.
For exemple, these past weeks, i enjoyed more my warrior while doing the marionette and the wurms event. I don’t know how much people i saved with my battle standard, felt very useful to my team. General attakcs with all weapons hit multiple targets, so i found it easier to just clear lanes with my war. However, i find myself more useful running with my mesmer when doing fractals.
Best thing to do is like me, run both, If you don’t have the time or the money to equip both, go with your guts and what YOU like, not what people will tell you to like.
I’m a glass zerker and im in the same boat as you. I just love the look of dual wielding swords. Being forced into conditions kinda suck, if you plan on being a power based warrior.
I’ve been missing around in the cursed shore and wvw with swords.
Here’s my thought. Main hand sword is viable as a power build.
-Flurry is a mixed skill. It does okish damage but stacks a lot of bleed fast. The good thing is, it immobilize your foe, perfect for hundred blades to the face. But just on it’s own, it’s not so great without conditions.
- Auto attack is low compared to other weapons we have, but it’s fast and depending on your build, it crits (in my case) for 1.5k – 2k, while still stacking bleeds.
- Leap is just awesome to get around, in or out a fight if you need to heal, very good in pvp/wvw. Damage wise, it’s meh
- Final trust, is THE best skill to use as a power based. The reason why i love to run mainhand sword. I often crit for 8-9k with it, just awesome.
As for offhand sword, it becomes a bit less viable.
- Impale is weak without condis, however rip hits hard (mine goes for 5-6k) so still viable as a power based build.
- Riposte is clearly meant for conditions. It block and counter with bleeds, while doing low direct damage. The good thing i see about it tho, is the cooldown is only 15 sec (compared to shield)
Like you, i would love s/s but the game forces me into s/a or s/sh
No matter what i do, i can’t win 1vs1
I have a avg ratio of 1 kill to 10 death for any 1v1. Just wondering if there’s some like me out there, that got any better?
I know the best tip is, continue practicing, you’ll get better. Thing is, i’ve been playing since launch date. I have all classes to 80 but main a Warrior (easy mode suposely) and a mesmer. I tried pretty much all build, zerker, bunker and condition. Haven’t tried a full cleric/healer yet on my war or guard but i doubt that’s the answer.
The only way i can get kills is if i follow the zerg or gank somebody, which really is dishonourable and cheezy. How can i improve my 1v1 ?
The #2 is OK the way it is. Its true the DMG depends on how many hits you can get with it, but that’s why you have the #3 leap and #5 pull, so you can always be close to your enemy. In pve it,s really easy to do good dmg, in wvw/PvP it’s more complicated since other players moves a lot. I like the combo scepter #3 (lock+vul) immediately switch to GS, leap and spin.
It’s fairly good in 1 on 1, but the GS begs to be surrounded by multiple enemies.
This has probably been discussed in the past, but I’m curious to know how they do in dungeons. I main a warrior and have all other prof to 80 except elem /thief.
If you go full zerk/crit, you have such a low health pool, a fly can kill you. If you add toughness or health, your DMG and crits takes a huge drop. Since most parties do speed runs and use different stacking techniques for bosses, what’s the point of using stealth/backstab ?
I really want to give the thief a chance, since almost all parties I see has no thieves, except high fractals. All you see is war, guards, mesm, elem. Rangers are often kicked out and engies, i don’t really like their playstyle. What,s a good amount of health and attack/crit for dungeons, without being a glass/squishy canon?
Help me love my thief, and not just for pvp
I’ve been playing GW2 since launch, however i took a break and haven’t touched the game for a good 4 months. I used to play a lot with my mesmer in wvw, are they still viable as a glass canon zerker? What other profession got balanced for wvw?
I have 5 80s, War, Guard, Engi, Thief and Mesmer.
Thanks
I’m from Ferguson’s Crossing, been there since i started playing. I’ve been looking into NSP since it’s just a tier 6 serv. I’m really not into the whole tier 1 zerg fest, that is why i love my little tier 8 serv. WvWvW is really fun on our tier 8, there’s some small zergs but it’s nothing compared to higher tier, and with some well place defenses, you can break the zerg really fast. One thing that sucks however, is the PVE, it’s a real ghost town.
So that is why i was looking into NSP, i keep hearing the PVE is awesome but how is WvWvW? Is it just a zerg fest like higher tier or you can still have small skirmishes here and there, and a bit of solo roaming?
Add a decent cooldown between stealths.
A thief shouldn’t be able to stealth, burst, stealth, burst,(getting hit bad) stealth away.
Should be, stealth, burst/fight, dodge/survive, run away, repeat burst or stealth away if cooldown is over.
I’m not greedy, i would even buff stealth to last longer, giving a thief a good sneaking attack or a good way to escape. However, out of stealth, you would have to fight and survive for X seconds before using stealth again.
It’s my opinion but i think it would force thieves to use more of their mobility skills rather than stealth. Besides, it’s not like thieves are lacking mobility…
I prefer warrior because they have the best of both worlds. You can go Melee with Range and excel at both.
Ranger is a fun profession i admit, i run a full glass canon.
However, pets in wvwvw are somewhat useless. In dungeons they always die *making u very vulnerable) The ranger is plagued with the “obstructed” bug. Most of the time, if i chase a enemy or even standing still, my shots can be obstructed. The warrior’s rifle seems to be a lot more forgiven with that bug.
Ranger’s longbow is pretty decent for wvwvw, however, skill 1 is somewhat slow and easy to dodge (same for war’s bow)
Warriors has heavy armor, vs medium for Ranger.
Ranger has very poor condition removal
Melee wise, unless you run full spirits, warrior will eat a ranger for diner. Especially if you plan on running with a GS.
It;s just my opinion but go with Warrior. Better dps, lots of builds to try and have fun with. Can adapt to all situation and no pets to manage and less bugs (so far).
However, GS warrior, is not the only way to go :)
I suggest you go in the mist and fool around with both prof and try different builds, see what you like best.
This is pretty much how i feel when playing my Engi

I feel your pain brother. I played Ultima Online for many years and still would if the player base was bigger and the graphs a bit better. Anyways, i miss the good old days, where you always had to watch yourself for player killers (PKs) and a chance of being looted.
All the other mmos i played, i always choose (if possible) a pvp server, where you can get attacked at anytime. GW lacks that, heck, the game doesn’t offer PVE player to player challenge, so thats why i prefer wvwvw over spvp. However, even if you gain random stuff and badges, i still miss the option of looting your enemy.
As for me, i don’t care about stealth/high burst D/D build. If you can manage to evade or counter the thief, there’s a good chance for you to turn the table around. High burst d/d builds are very squishy. Worst case, they stealth away and might try to get you again in a few sec.
Right now, what really grinds my gears, is how they can finish you off or another player while in stealth. Now that is some big BS.
Are you having fun? If so, then stick with the class, it’s a fun one. Probably the profession i had to most fun so far. However, it is hard to play, especially with the nerfs/bugs. If you want a extra challenge, stick with the engi lol.
If you want to run dungeons or be king in wvw, then you might want to look into something else, especially if it’s your first/main character.
But that’s just me.
Nades took a major blow
Healing now sucks.
Mortar is a joke, gets destroyed in 5 sec.
I guess engineer is no longer a good wvw defending class.
While i understand why anet have installed a system like this, however, by doing so, it really removes the tactics of some professions.
Just because the monster can’t reach you, they become invulnerable. Wow, really?
I really don’t mind the invulnerable on bosses/champions but on regular thrash, that’s just crap.
They could fix this by doing one of these options
1. Code the mobs so that if they can’t reach you, then they run away.
2. If you kill a monster from a higher ground (where the monster would normally be invulnerable), there’s a big penalty to your loot/xp % gain.
Playing engineer mostly just for WVW, i have to agree, the mortar begs for better range.
1. Needs better range and los
2. Way too easy to destroy a mortar by spamming meteor shower (elem) or barrage (ranger), because we have to set our mortar near the edge of a wall, to get better range. Kinda sad if you think about it, it’s a elite skill and we can’t (most of the time) use it for more than 10 seconds. 10 sec for a 2 min cooldown, is not worth it, especially when you can throw nades at the same range of a mortar and you have mobility.
So now i never use the mortar.
