People QQ about zergs because they play Thief and want to 1v1 someone and be able to cap a point for it in a hundred person game.

Any thoughts about PvP gear in WvW?

Let’s make WvW its own thing and leave spvp and pve be.

But that’s the point of the thread… WvW and PvE are not separate.

I spent the first two months or so after release only doing PvP. All my buddies were level 80 and I was level….6 I think (I admit – I got dragged into a little PvE <sad bears>). I thought WvW would be PvP lite but I was…somewhat wrong. You can find some really great PvP opportunities in WvW by staying with small groups or roaming solo but you can just as easily join with the zerg to change up the momentum. Now, I basically only WvW and never PvP. The level of “PvP competition” may not be as high, but I still find it more enjoyable. I leveled my Mesmer from level 6 to 80 solely from WvW and it was great. Mesmer was an ideal class for that though since it’s pretty easy to escape when needed.

I don’t think I ever got truly “one-shotted” but there were many, many times when I took an 80% hit to HP from one attack. I honestly didn’t find the level disparity to be that big an issue and it probably made me a better PvP’er by playing at such a large disadvantage for so long (i.e. my biggest attacks landing like 1.2k dmg). And I have to say, nothing was more satisfying than taking down a level 80 as an underleveled character. Now that I hit 80 I’ve been considering leveling a warrior through WvW.

Not sure if that helped but there you go.

I can’t comment on the leveling rate of WvW since I don’t know. But you make it sound relatively speedy, so I may give it a try.

However, I can assure you that you did not kill a level 80 as a non-80. They were either not level 80, or if they were and you DID kill an 80, they were horrible and legitimately had a mental disability. (Like… legitimately. The ratio of video gamers with them is pretty high.)

Also, if you’ve never been 1-shot by an 80, you haven’t fought an 80 Thief or Warrior. They would literally 1-shot you. I do it to actual 80’s, I can’t imagine not doing it to someone with sub-80 armor and health.

I’d also like to add that although I’ve only been doing WvW for a short time from lvl 40-55 now, I’ve racked up over 200 kills which is definitely nothing to brag about, but it is enough to know that I haven’t been useless while in WvW. I really don’t feel that you have to be 80 to enjoy WvW.

Being involved in 200 people dying is not actually getting 200 kills, though. You may feel like you contributed because YOU were doing everything in your power and you maximized your output. But it’s the same as it would be in like… World of Warcraft. Two level 85’s are fighting each other, and you’re the level 23 who landed a couple Fireballs for less than a percentage of their health. Know what I mean? You may have done all of your cooldowns and played really well to survive and land a thing or two on them, but ultimately, you’re just a fly buzzing in their ear.

I know because I’ve seen this from both ends in both games.

And perhaps I can view it, as you said, as a sort of World PvP environment where the quests are towers and players & whatnot, but that still just makes it a casual PvP format rather than an actual competitive one.

But, in the end, maybe that’s the point.

So, that leaves the imagery that WvW is just used as a leveling method rather than a PvP method.

Max traits, as well.

The primary appeal in GW1 is that you can just hop in and PvP at maximum characteristic efficiency right out of the gate.

For GW2, Structured PvP allows this as well. But the same 4 maps or so can get boring, and after that, your only PvP option is WvW.

I’ve hopped into a WvW run as my level 55 Ele. It was made quite clear to me that even though my level scales up to 80, all that does for me is increase my base health. Without level 80 stats, my level 55 armor makes me get 1 shot, I lack any form of options with my traits, and I can’t even beat down a wooden door with my lack of power or a decent weapon.

WvW is strictly for level 80’s (unless you plan on being some sort of CC bot and pray to god nobody decides to target you). Leveling is such a turn-off from games for me. I realize that that’s a personal thing, but I know I’m far from the only one who feels this way.

From where I’m sittin’, I feel that there’s no REAL reason to make WvW based on your PvE status. WvW is a PvP event, and if people wanna show off their PvE prowess, then they should go do it in a PvE environment.

That being said, from what I hear, there needs to be more PvE content. But that’s another story.

The only reason I can think of to make WvW a PvE-based thing is because perhaps Anet feels that it will increase people’s play time by making them want to take the time to level so that they can WvW. However, I think that this is not the case. I’d wager at least 80% of people who are actual PvP’ers just do sPvP and ignore WvW because they don’t want to PvE to level 80 in order to do it. And I’d wager at least 90% of WvW’ers are just PvE’ers who want to casually participate in the Big Boy Game of PvP (sorry, just throwing a little PvP elitism in there, but it’s honestly how I view it).

What’s the general thoughts of this from you guys?

Ricochet is just lol now instead of a face palm, so that’s an improvement I guess.
VERY interesting choice in the stealth escape, perhaps to make up for some of the extra speed buffs tossed out to all the other classes.

So... New stealth bug?

Shady C.5041

There was a particular Thief in one of the servers today playing sPvP. Every time I went to cap an “empty” node, he would Backstab me after about 10 seconds of nobody in sight. Then he would kill me off and use Hide in Shadows and be permanently stealthed again until the next time.

Now… Keep in mind, I know what I’m talking about. I main a Thief. The thought occurred to me that maybe he was using the stealth trap. But that wasn’t the case, as he was using Haste with two Signets. And even still, that doesn’t explain him just using Hide in Shadows and permanently disappearing until however late a new target would show up. I stayed dead to watch the node, and it was the same thing for other people. He kills me, Hides in Shadows, and there’s nobody there for a good 30 seconds. Then a teammate comes to cap, and boom. Backstab, etc, rinse & repeat.

It was effectively a WoW rogue’s stealth :/ And no, I am not mistaken it for Shadow Refuge or something like that. We’re talking a good 30 seconds here. Plus, Shadow Refuge is pretty obvious, a big freakin’ house is dropped on the ground.

PvP-only Warrior, rank 21 Dolyak and completely broke (1 or 2 silver) across all characters. Spent too much money on random dyes for various characters.

This is what I was using until I enabled the rank 20 gear:

Now this is what I got, front and back:

http://puu.sh/1yPMs

http://puu.sh/1yPML

How good is this, and what changes would you make to be even closer to what we’re goin’ for here?

Note: The dye is Midnight Teal, darkest I could afford. The armor dye is Matte, cuz that kitten’s free. It also looks like it works out perfectly (but I am colorblind, so it may be way off in reality).

People are saying things about Shortbow being AoE and Pistols being single target and all that jazz… But, really, Shortbow does much more single target DPS as well. A Clusterbomb does the damage of an Unload without including the bleed, plus it’s not a channel (doesn’t tie up your time for auto-attacking).

Yeah, that’s a good point. In all honesty, it was PROBABLY just a bunch of level 30’s with no traits or stats. I’d wager a large majority of WvW’ers are sub level 50 who just wanna PvP and “jump to 80 for free”.

So if you’re a level 80, it was ACTUALLY more like a 1v1 with 7 random onlookers. Consider that.

In my personal opinion, 1200 Range Weapon Needed

in Thief

Posted by: Shady C.5041

Shady C.5041

Skipping all the posts, I highly disagree to Thieves needing a 1200.

Shortbow is already everything you could every want from a ranged weapon. Literally all of its abilities are fantastic. And 900 range should really be all you need.

If they gave us a 1200 rifle, it should probably have abilities as bad as the pistol’s in order to be fair.

That being said, pistols need a buff.

Assumption =/= Opinion…

Assumption =/= Actual statistic…

Assumption =/= Data I can prove by quoting the very source you’re trying to defend (yourself):

Oh, thieves get all the bonuses for steal from the very first tier trait in deadly arts? Good to know!

When you use this as an argument AGAINST the statement that Steal is great just by getting one or two of its many modifications, then no, I am not making any assumptions.

So, in summary… You need to look up the definition of “assumption”.

Edit: While you’re at it, look up what “at best” means, if you really don’t know what’s wrong with calling an untraited Steal “at best”.

No – I can admit perhaps it was my own misconceived perception, if you are saying you didn’t get that vibe. But the way he says he was “shocked” at all the self heals, it gave me an implication that he thought thieves had way more than every other class, and were a tanky class because of the blind statement that COLLECTIVELY, thieves have lots of heal mechanics.

How is an untraited Steal “at best”?

You have to be a troll. Or just not smart enough where debating with you is worth it.

as thief, I Always use steal:

- First, this is for melee user. not range
- You must have these trait: (Deadly Arts)Mug – Deal damage when stealing + (Shadow Arts) Hidden Thief – Stealing grants you 2 seconds of stealth.
- have basilisk venom
- Use Basilisk Venom then Steal (your foe become stone because the steal deal damage) and you going stealth (Auto attack will stop here) and then use shortcut 1 for back stab, and then Dagger and cloack and then back stab again.

I usually use this on pvp for chasing someone or kill brust. and Pve for kill faster.

fyi: Basilisk venom and steal have same cooldown.

So you’re exploiting.

Attacking out of stealth debuffs you to be unable to restealth for 4 seconds. So a stealthing Mug into Backstab into Cloak & Dagger should be entirely useless if you’re playing exploit-free…

Assumptions aren’t nice, nor are they accurate.

Blah blah blah, words. What are you even talking about? Do you know what the definition of an assumption is? Because nothing I said at any point in time was one of those.

I do this on my Ele all the time as a tank staff build. 10 in earth, 30 water, 30 arcane. Three cantrips, etc. I have like 20sec Protection buffs, and heal a “kitten” ton.

Granted, all it takes is a Mesmer to Mind Wrack crash me, or a couple Thieves to drop a brick on their 2 key, and I start having trouble… But yeah.

It should have been a utility skill, not a class specialty.

It requires way too much traiting to be considered “good”…especially from a class specialty perspective.

Way too much traiting = First tier trait in Deadly Arts.

Oh, thieves get all the bonuses for steal from the very first tier trait in deadly arts? Good to know!

I always thought they were all spread out all over and required multiple tiers, and traits. Thanks for clarifying it for me.

Well then…nerf steal please, since you get all the benefits from just first tier trait in deadly arts…that adds power as welll. OP!!!!

This is a ridiculous sentiment.

No class gets full benefit from anything at all from one trait or two.

That being said, the BEST addition to the Steal ability is Mug. And most Thieves use Mug as Steal’s only modifier, because it’s all you need.

Yes, there’s many other ways to modify Steal to make it, itself, better. But those are more specific to other builds, such as a more stealth-heavy build, or what have you.

In actuality, Steal is one of the most versatile abilities in the game because of this. But you fail to see this, because you want to be able to throw on all of its modifications into a single, optimal build to rule them all.

This thread is such propaganda against Thieves.

You wanna criticize the class, the only thing to mention is Heartseeker. And I can understand hating on other things like Steal or Cloak & Dagger, if you’re a bad player/scrub.

But saying they HEAL too much?

You just hit a whole new level of bad.

What the heck are you talking about? This is just an information post about the different ways a Thief can heal … no where did I mention that they heal too much, only that the option to take additional healing methods were possible. There have been posts in the past on these forums, and others from people asking about how to make their thieves more durable, so I compiled some information about different ways we can heal.

That’s not the way you present it, and you know it.

Each point in Trickery increases the recharge rate of stealing by 1%.

While most of that is good info. It should be known that, while the tool-tip DOES state this, it has always been broken and does NOT, in fact, reduce the CD.

It doesn’t reduce the displayed cooldown when you mouse over the skill. But if you activate it, there is a reduced cooldown.

S/D better runes?

in Thief

Posted by: Shady C.5041

Shady C.5041

Ogre runes are really nice for a Power-focused S/D build, and the Rock Dog hasn’t given me away in Stealth yet since he’s mostly off doing his own thing and chewing on some poor Invader’s legs. The downside is that they’re a little over 2g each, with the 4% 6-set damage boost being a bit mediocre.

What you’re failing to understand is that 4% damage is much better than 4% crit damage. In fact, depending on your actual crit damage , the 4 raw damage is going to be better than a lot more than 4% crit damage.

There’s a lot of traits that say you gain an effect at a certain percentage of health. Some of them will say it has a cooldown, and others do not have a displayed cooldown.

I am assuming that ANet simply failed to give the cooldown on half of these traits, rather than assuming that there is no cooldown. Any confirmation, as well as information on what the cooldowns would be on unlabeled traits? I’m particularly interested in Final Shielding for Ele’s, although I’ve wondered about many other similar traits that provide some form of protection (like Desperate Decoy for Mesmers).
