One of the most unique part of the game left dead.
Sad.

For now, but I’m really hoping the game is building towards Cantha, Janthir Bay, and the Underwater Dragon for expansion 3, so we can finally get new UW mechanics.

I have dreamt about the fight with a massive UW dragon for years.

If they fully change up and/or upgrade the entire UW combat system, I’m totally down.

Can we/will we ever get Fishing?

I’ve recently come back to the game and have never loved an MMO so much in so many years since EQ1, Vanilla WoW, UO, etc…

Something this time around, I don’t know what, really clicked and I have been playing non-stop (before I did short bursts and quit). I’ve finally found my home, and bonus… I’ve brought friends – for the the first time my close gaming buddies have picked it up and are loving it rather than quitting in the first couple of days! Addiction all around, hurray!

Thanks Anet – can’t wait for PoF.

Cheers.

Btw sorry for turning your post in something completely wrong Jesseii (but ppl are kittens somehow)

Beacause Faolin/Caithe and Marjory/Kasmeer weren’t forced down our throats like tumblr crap. They had cool storylines that flowed well with the game and actually contributed to their personalities and characters.

XP reward based on effort+time event needs

I would not mind the XP rewards being raised on the events that take 10x longer to complete in HoT zones compared to short quick ones.

That said… I don’t want the XP nerfed on the shorter events. So maybe if they just leave it as is…

Yah I do agree with that, when you are trying to get 2 million + XP to level up a mastery farming the same events over and over to get 18K from each is kinda boring.

I know it’s a complicated area since you do not want to have them too much XP and then have masteries be super easy to achieve.

Maybe the raid will have good XP rewards and will eliminate the need to farm events.

I think the raids main focus will be loot, that’s just me though… Also that’s just how raids have always been, who knows!

It would probably be a small overhaul to their event system to include some kind of a measurement of each event for the reward you get.

It could back fire though, those short events you love might suddenly drop from 18k to 4k, and the long events only go up to 22k or something xD

Unreal Engine 4

I know exactly what changing graphic engne would mean.
Every map/character/monster they made, would need to be remade. They would need to remake game almost from begginings.
Sure it would cost much and take lots of time, but GW2 sold over 3M copies + not to mention gems in game. I think they wouldn’t have money problems.
But I forgot that for UE4 to run perfectly we would need monster PC.

It would take 3+ years to do it. It would be like starting the game development from scratch. It’s not just about shifting all of their maps and characters and monsters. It would require completely recoding the entire game. Every single event. All of the dialogue. Every single tiny asset. It would involve retraining all of the staff to deal with a new engine. Redoing all of the in game movements. The engine isn’t just about aesthetics, it runs most of the game… You’re also grossly underestimating how much game development costs. They would burn through all of their money (and then some) doing it, and they would be highly unlikely to make new sales as a result of the change. Meaning they would end up bankrupt…

Thank you, people severely underestimate what Game Development really takes, especially on a scale of an MMORPG.

Be nice. While there would be a bit of work involved, if they could preserve all the art, animations, and sound assets, that cuts down a lot of needing to start entirely from scratch.

The OP called out UE4 for it’s looks but this game was never about photorealistic environments. And while the UE engines do scale down to lower end hardware well enough, it’ll end up performing and looking worse than what we have now on the lower end systems. So they would be sacrificing a portion of their potential base of players.

Also UE4 is a 64-bit only engine. Sure nowadays systems running a 32-bit OS are all but obsolete but the game did come out supporting that. Same is true with Dx9 support as the UE4 dropped support for that. Again that’s tied to the now long unsupported by Microsoft Windows XP and shouldn’t be an issue for new players but it was supports once.

I don’t think you have any idea of how insanely difficult it is transferring all of those assets from a massive complete game to an entirely different framework.

In fact, it’s easier to start from scratch.

Underwater Combat...whats your vision?

Snarftastic.6709

It’s a part of the game I hardly care about. I swimm to get from A to B, as fast as possible, not to combat. The only exceptions are mining spots surrounded by creatures. But they useually only slow me down, not even going into combat there lol! Sooo, I would say: underwater world has a nice look, but it’s a pretty useless feature…

Your all kind of missing the point. The purpose of this article is not to harp on about how bad underwater combat is. Its purpose is to discuss what it needs to be the awesome system we all know it could and should be! Nothing constructive comes from saying, ‘Yeah, I just skip that part’. The point is to ask ourselves, what is at lacking that makes it annoying, and what do we each think could be done to make it enjoyable? Let’s focus on idea generation. I am for me, aware of where they took water out of pvp play in general but it wasn’t always that way, and fun underwater combat could draw even more players into the game. Maybe pvp would be a good discussion? What would you think the changes should be to underwater combat to make it worthy to have pvp and wvw maps that incorporate underwater combat?

To me it’s the skills.

First you lose a lot of your signature moves and cooldowns. Then (not all classes) you get some really useless crap that doesn’t feel at all like your class and in some cases is down right terrible, slow, and clunky.

The irony is that there is no depth in the combat underwater (lel).

Unreal Engine 4

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Snarftastic.6709

Snarftastic.6709

Short answer: No. Absolutely not.

GW2 uses its own engine, and to redo the game with Unreal would basically mean remaking the entire game. There are systems they could carry over, of course, but the whole thing would be extremely expensive, tying up artists and programmers for a long time.

UE4 has excellent lighting, among other features, but it’s just not practical here. I think Anet would rather continue working with their own engine, developing new content, than the massive amount of work it would take to redevelop the entire world. There are other considerations as well, like how much UE4 would raise the system requirements to get the results you’re imagining. Then you have licensing the engine, retraining everyone to work in the new engine, etc.

I think the Unreal Engine would make the game a lot more responsive and stable. The GW2 engine is terribly written.

You don’t know anything about Game Development do ya?

MMO = Massive Multiplayer Online.

It doesn’t mean “Have to play with others”. You guys have no idea what an MMO is. An MMO just means you are playing with other people playing the same game as you in the same environment. It does not mean that you are forced to play with those same players to accomplish anything. It is optional.

People play MMOs for many different reasons. Being able to socialize with others while gaming in the same world is one example. It doesn’t mean they absolutely HAVE to play with other players, just that they are in an environment with other players. Playing solo in an MMO is perfectly fine if that is the choice you wish to take.

The OP is right though. HoT was designed with groups/zergs in mind. If you haven’t actually seen the events, they are all zerg events or mass group events (pretty much the same thing).

Oh you mean like how Silverwastes worked? or every other zone with events? or dungeons? or fractals? or PvP? or WvW? or World Bosses?

Hmm, yeah, those didn’t need other people in them.

Hurr durr burr

Not sure what you’re trying to argue here, as I just made a general statement, not a complaint. Yes, HoT was designed for groups. Just like those zones you mentioned, but most events in the older zones could easily be soloed. Scaling was a thing remember? Even most of the events in Silverwaste could be soloed as well.

PvP you could go into solo. You didn’t have to make groups to be able to join PvP. You queued up solo. So that doesn’t fall into the category.

So, what exactly is the point you’re trying to make here?

You don’t have to make a group for any of this?

I haven’t made a single group and I’m almost done the entire story, have done most events and getting all hero points right now.

What groups? If you really think this is difficult content, you’re just terrible.

The only issue I can see anyone ever bring up is the fact that it’s artificially gated behind the mastery system.

Solo players are a huge part of the mmo landscape and have been for years since wlel before GW2. MMOs are not just for people to do grouped content with.

What can’t you exactly solo?

I haven’t had to group for ANYTHING other than random players once in a while showing up to kill a few things.

And no, modern MMOs are casual simple solo machines, a true MMORPG is not meant to be a solo game.

Clearly MMORPGS aren’t for you, you do realize there are amazing games like Skyrim, and so on for SOLO players?

In an intuitive MMORPG system, movement is for positioning and getting around obstacles. Your combat performance comes from knowing your class, knowing your rotations, knowing your fights, theorycrafting and itemization. As far as I can tell, GW2 has all of that — rotations are pretty simplified, okay. Itemization seems like a failure based on my limited experience (specifically with PvP). But, do I have to seriously develop muscle memory for dodges?

Rotation is simplified because one good enemy dodge completely negates your rotation. You have to be more creative when fighting other players. You can’t really stick to that simple rotation.

And it’s the same as other games here. The combat system here is way better than 99.999 percent of mmorpg. If you can’t enjoy it, it’s your problem.

If you look at his post history he just talks about WoW in every post.

Which is odd because combat in WoW with rotations has become the most simple combat in any MMORPG ever, except maybe Trove because that is literally just 2 buttons.

Combat -- Horrendously Bad?

Snarftastic.6709

I can’t help but think that substituting actual RPG mechanics for action mechanics is console-y and actually pretty pathetic. All I’m saying is, even in it’s currently severely dumbed-down state, WoW has:

Attack Power
Spell Power
Intelligence
Stanima
Armor
Avoidance
Strength
Dexterity
Mastery
Versatility
Haste
Multistrike
Crit
Spirit
Dodge
Block
Parry

As far as I can tell, at least for my Thief, GW2 has:

Precision
Power
Armor
Vitality

In addition, I have a very simple 2-key rotation (auto-attack and heartseeker). Using the blind + heartseeker combo to get into stealth seems to be a clunky and expensive way to get a little bit of stealth. It also takes quick and accurate mouse action to accomplish in a useful manner.

As a former WoW vet (and having loved that game in the past)… You are so wrong it’s just bad.

Not only did you list so many stats are now useless or “auto’d” onto gear because of your class, you threw in random stuff that doesn’t even exist or has no meaning at all.

WoW Class Specs only have a use for 2 (if healer or tank, 3) stats on gear which you now attempt to roll on every piece. There is absolutely 0 customization to your gear except getting a higher item level.

So you might want to shorten your list to 2 stats (and ignore Str, Agi, Int as they now only roll for the class that you are and are technically built into the gear and have become entirely useless other than boosting you through the iLevel of the item)

If anything, these days in WoW it goes like this:

GEAR! Does it have versatility? Yes? Trash. No? Keep going.

Is it higher item level? No? Trash. Yes? Equip.

Done. Much complex, very hard. From your post it seems like you need a game that’s much more simple than even WoW, stand, press buttons, kill, loot.
