Hi Jemi! Welcome to the game and the forums. You’ve chosen well with choosing the Asura to start – they are so darn cute and gotta love the ears.
Hope to see you ingame sometime.
Good luck! Happy Gaming!.
Yay! I’m in…..Thanks for that – everything is tickety-boo now.
Stuck in loading screen Metrica Provence. Changed chars to test – loaded into LA no problem – went to Rata Sum with this char and couldn’t access Metrica from there either.
Accept stuff happens but terribly frustrating when on time limits – probably latest patch as others have said, was fine before.
Ach! Sour grapes LightningBlaze?
There’s nothing wrong with helping others – at least Daphoenix spotted a need and decided to share what he knew.
Plenty of MMO’s have guides with players helping other players. Most players that use them usually adapt them to their own playstyles anyway.
And…you’re contributing to the ‘bumping’ of the thread yourself…and so am I, duh! .

I’m sure lots of folks fit in the middle.
To me ‘casual’ means “Of course I’ll help you learn how to play the game”. Whereas ‘hardcore’ means “Kitten off I’m far too busy!”
Just checked – all gone now.
That’ll be all the whinging and whining some folks have been doing about the April content.
Was playing in Queensdale on Desolation a couple of hours ago and saw plenty of chests then. Getting back in game now will go check it out.
Good Luck! Have Fun!
The new content would make sense if it was a relaxing break from the rest of the game. But it’s not…it’s the same stuff just dressed up in 80’s graphics. 90% of the game is themepark, teensy silliness that really only appeals to a younger audience. They threw in this 8-bit stuff as a nice joke, and it may be fun to play for a little while, but it doesn’t make up for its lack of good content..
Tosh! What utter tosh!
Younger audience indeed. I’ve been avidly reading this thread and shaking my head in amazement at some of the rubbish I’m reading.
I’m old – even older than Methusla some would say – I was born in 1941. I did not start playing computer games until Windows 98, was way too busy with real life and keeping babies fed and warm, so I missed out on the ‘Mario’ stuff. I’m not new to MMO’s having faithfully played City of Heroes from beta till it’s premature burial (was still a lot of millage left in that game)
Old as I am, GW2 appeals to me greatly, can’t see where you get the connection with theme-park and teensy silliness from. The graphics are beautiful and the lore/story entertaining.
Games are fun or should be – ‘tis the meaning of the word ’game’ after all they are meant to delight and amuse their participents. I just love the April Fools content, a celebration and an education of what games were before they evolved into what we have nowadays.
Everybody needs to lighten up and enjoy the Fun Box for what it is – an enjoyable diversion from the more ‘serious’ GW2 content. It’s not going to last forever, just one month, I look forward to more of the same in future.
Happy Gaming!
Ach! Arikyali, I wouldn’t worry about it if I were you. I’m currently playing an ele and using the ice bow. I sometimes use the spare if I need it, but rarely. If it’s on the floor it’s anybody’s imo. There are a couple of prima-donna’s that play this game – I met one that had a tantrum (was very abusive via a whisper) because I didnt rez when they were down while fighting the same mob as I was – oddly, was I was dead myself at the time. Takes all sorts – just take it with a pinch of salt and don’t worry about it.
Good luck! Have fun!
However, I think your idea of 2 difficulty modes is a sound one. It shouldn’t be that hard to implement as lots of games have varying levels of difficulty. By reading this and similar threads the cans and the can’ts – so to speak – are about evenly balanced and varying the difficulty levels would keep everybody happy.
I think if 2 difficulty modes were implemented, the ‘hard’ version should offer a better reward than the easier version.
But of course! Maybe this would encourage the can’ts (myself included) to try just that little bit harder…..sticking a carrot on the end of a stick usally makes the donkey go faster.
Just my two penny’orth. I look on dailies as tutorials – something I thought was sorely lacking when I first started playing GW2. For example, before dailies I didn’t know how to dodge, mainly because in my experience I have never met the concept before in any game – though the FPS Max Payne did employ something similar. I’m getting on in years and not as adaptable as I used to be and new stuff takes a little longer to learn these days. I was really struggling with dodging and having an awful time completing missions and my personal story. When they introduced dodging into the dailies I had to learn how to dodge in order to complete them. After a little practice and many failed dodges I have now got the hang of it and finding the combat sytem much more enjoyable now. So…imo dailies are a welcome addition – especially as they are really improving my enjoyment of the game.
9/10 for all three, all very Norn-ish
Eir Ona GString – female guardian – coz I thought I was being ‘clever’ and it sounded Norn-ish.
(edited by Supasilvafoxy.1247)
Kommissar Rexx 9/10 I like it very much but took off one point for overuse of double consonants
Hunnybun coz I named her for cuteness and cute is what she is.
Because we’re human I guess and ‘naturally’ think of things/beings in the term of gender, tis how we make sense of the world.
That’s beautiful, descriptive and elegant 8/10.
Fleur Dyliss, Sylvari. Was trying to think of a plant name as that is what they are and Fleur-de-lis is french for flower of the lily. Result is what you see, Dyliss is also the lily in Welsh – seemed descriptive enough for me.
Of course I want you to enjoy the games’ personal story as much as I do but posts like these actually sort of make my scared.
For me the difficulty level is perfect so if they are to tone it down one way or another I hope they offer 2 difficulty modes so it doesn’t become overly easy and therewith boring for me.
I would hate to be instrumental in destroying your enjoyment of the game holksa and am happy to work around it as it stands atm.

Which story step? Stories don’t “uplevel” at all, so this is very odd.
Oh dear! I’ve got myself in a frightful muddle haven’t I?
Sorry if I gave the impression that I was saying the story upleveled, I didnt mean it literally, I meant that as I was lvl 24 it felt like the mission had lvled up to 23 when in reality, though I was lvl 24 I had been down-leveled to lvl 15 the mission was still at 14.
You misunderstood my response, my fault Guzzi for not explaining myself more clearly.
I tried to do the mission at it’s correct lvl – I was at the same level – in this case lvl 14, I failed miserably, probably because I’m not very good I thought . In order to complete it I followed the advice to wait for a couple of levels then go back and try again. I was distracted for 10 levels then went back to try again. I found that the mission which was level 14 the last time I did it had upped to lvl 23, I was 24 at this time, so all I had gained by waiting was one level. I still could not do it – so the advice to wait a few levels didn’t help at all. Even though my powers, armour and weapons were bang up-to-date. At this point I accepted defeat and gave up.Ah, I see.
How very odd, story missions should not up-level themselves! I don’t suppose you know the name of the story or what it was about? I wouldn’t mind looking into this a little deeper.
I still haven’t clarified this have I? Let me put it another way.
Cant remember the name of the mission sorry. I have deleted the character so I cant check.
I was lvl 14 and the mission was 14, I could not do it and decided to wait a couple of lvls in order to try. I inadvertanly got side-tracked and didnt get back to try the mission again until I was lvl 24. When I did do it the level of the mission was still set at 14 and I was only one lvl higher at 15, but in reality I was lvl 24,. Because my powers, weapons and armour were at the higher level I should have been able to breeze through it – but I still couldn’t complete it.
Alright! I probably suck at the game but I seem to manage fine with everything else except the personal story and like a lot of folks who struggle with their story-line missions I think that some of the missions in the story are too hard.
Make sure your gear (weapons, armor, jewellery if poss) are somewhere close to the story mission level.
Supasilvafoxy – the only way the mission would level up to one below your own level after gaining ten, is if you were 9 below the requirement in the first place.
EG – lvl 50 trying lvl 59 mission. Your lvl shows as 50. You lvl to 60, suddenly it is one below your level. But your equipment, if not upgraded is still 50 or maybe less…
If you are lower than the recommended level for that mission, you should get a warning banner. You can probably beat a mission 5 above your own, with difficulty, but 9 is a bit much.
Personally, I think the level marker in the bottom left should tell you what area lvl you are in, even if you are below that level. Would stop a lot of complaining about being buttwhupped!

Not too much I can say, OP, except that I feel your pain and I had already arrived at the same conclusion you did. I don’t bother with them anymore, either. You’re certainly not the only one who feels the way you do.

The stock response to being able to solo ones personal story seems to be – get a few levels – ask friends and guildies to help.
I refuse to do the latter as this is supposed to be ‘my’ story not anyone elses and the former advice to get a few levels doesn’t work either as the levels level up as you do. I acquired ten levels on a char then went back and tried to do the mission. It automatically had leveled up to one level below my current level. I still couldnt do it.
I too give up on the personal story as life is way to short to waste time being irritated and frustrated.
Good luck! Happy Gaming
Can’t be your latest Firefox version as I use that also and have no problems viewing post links whatsoever. It does take a few secs for the link to connect but connect it does.
Good Luck! Happy Gaming!
As for a couple of others replying – leveling gets interesting for me from the get-go. Of course stuff like that is subjective – what floats my boat doesnt necessarly float yours.
I like the heart quests on all levels and the dynamic quests that pop up when you are in the area, I hate those MMO’s that have you checking in with contacts to get mission/quests.
Not brown-nosing or anything like that but GW2 has hit the nail right on the head in lots of aspects imo.
Good luck and Happy gaming!
Deadly Night Shade would be a good for a Sylvari – maybe suit a female necro though wouldn’t look awful on a male.
Good Luck! Happy Gaming!
I’d like to see what I’m going to get for my hubby’s hard-earned before I make a commitment, until that time I will hold my council and say – I really don’t know.
You can please some of the people all of the time, all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time.
Just substitute ‘fool’ for ‘please’ and you have a famous quote attributed to Abraham Lincoln.
It’s not humanly possible for any company to satisfy everybody when it comes to anything – least of all a video game.
It must be really difficult to get the balance just right between hard-core and casual gaming. Casual gamers are probably in the majority and I guess that is why the GW2 feels/is biased towards them. We live in the real world (sadly I sometimes feel) where everything comes down to ‘God Profit’ where companies shut down a perfectly good game simply because it isn’t making enough money re CoH. Maybe…they want that playerbase to buy GW2. Sorry I’m such a cynic!
Good luck and Happy Gaming!

Best of luck with your new guild. Everybody has to start somewhere and I would bet that all guilds were exactly in the same place as you are at some point. Of course it would be easier for you if you had a few friends ready to join you at the get-go, but as you haven’t just do what you are doing and be a little patient.
This is what I’m looking for when I want to join a Guild/Group in any MMO (I never start my own as I’m way to lazy and impatient)
First of all, spelling and wording of your advertisement – make sure that your spelling and grammar are correct – I never join a guild/group that can’t be bothered to pay attention to both.
Be clear in your aims – I hate joining a guild that says one thing but means something else – if you are advertising that you welcome all types, stages of experience etc say so and stick to it, I have left many guilds because they failed to follow through what they advertised.
Try not to exclude anybody unless you want a group that is specifically exclusive, i.e. within a certain age group etc as this will limit the number of people that can join.
Always welcome new members and introduce them to existing members who are in game at that time, nothing worse than joining a new group and being left in limbo. Try to include them in a group activity as soon as you can, the best guilds imo are those that make sure everybody is included in the current event.
I wish you luck with your new group – have lots of fun and happy gaming.
In games where I don’t have a mount for flying, I tend to do a lot of wandering due to good ol’ fashioned ADD. I can’t tell you how often I wandered off course to go check out a Dwemer city or Nordic burial site while going to do a specific quest in Skyrim, and even moreso in morrowind.
Hello and a hearty welcome Lord Naarghul. I think you’re going to love GW2 as the game positively encourages exploring – which you’re richly rewarded for btw. There are jumping puzzles and other types to do while exploring and map completion rewards also.
Happy gaming and good luck!
Altaholic here also. I don’t have a level 80 yet or anything anywhere near 80. I’m a bit of a fidget in RL and can’t settle down to much for any length of time without getting restless. I just play what I feeling like playing on that day. Having said that I do admire anyone with the tenacity and patience to get a character all the way to 80 without even thinking of making an alternative.
Obviously the Necromancer has not captured your attention fully. I would suggest you try each of the professions before settling down with just one. You have five character slots to fill and five races to choose from. All differ from each other in some respect with their story-lines and all feel different. If you make five characters with five different professions and get a little tired and bored with one you can play one of the others, say get each character to level 10 or so before making up you mind which satisfies you most.
Don’t only play the main storylines, there’s plenty of other stuff to do, all of which is richly rewarded. When you have a couple of levels to fill before the next mission in your storyline do some exploring, PvP – player versus player, WvW – world versus world and some crafting, this is what I do if I feel a little jaded with what I am currently doing.
Just experiment, Guildwars 2 is a very rewarding and interesting game, not the grind fest you think it to be. I speak from experience of having played a lot of MMORPG’s over the years.
Good Luck and Happy Gaming!
Haha, glad to see I wasn’t going crazy thinking this thread existed somewhere. Glad to see this bumped.
How remiss of me.
And…a special thanks to Lexy for giving Manoa the inspiration to give me the link to this thread.
Thanks for that link and the offer of help Manoa, will keep your offer in mind if I get stuck again.
Muchly thanks for this.
Search forums this am but used the search term ‘acronym’ and came up with zilch. Started a thread myself as I was in sore need of some explanations and help as a lot of acronyms/abbreviations are used in chat which I didn’t understand and which have been preventing me joining groups. So thanks again Falunel. Also thanks to Manoa for the link to this thread.
Thanks guys that advice is really helpful – though I did know the wiki command I never thought to use it for this particular problem. I did ask in game via map/local chat population but never did get a ‘sensible’ explanation.
@ mercury ranique, didnt want to put anyone to a lot of work, just a simple list of the most commonly used acronyms would suffice, I thought the harder stuff would come with experience.
Come from a City of Heroes background which I played from beta and picked up all the acronyms from the get-go, I really thought I would have little trouble picking up Guildwars stuff, but have found it a tad more complicated than CoH in general, though I do enjoy the game a lot it’s not quite as easy as CoH was to learn.
Thanks for going to the trouble of replying guys – mush preshiated.
I’m with bri on this one.
I play a lot unsocial hours so solo a lot and find map completion a good way to level. I usually take new chars to Lions Arch, The Grove and the profession starting maps when I run out of easy stuff early on, just exploring these without hassle from mobs is a real boon.
I’ve searched the forums and couldnt find a list of acronym translation for Guildwars 2, in game.
As a new player I’m getting really confused when folks broadcast in chat that they are looking for members for certain missions or teams. I do ask ingame what CoF or Fotm – the latter I’ve always thought to mean Flavour of the Month, though this seemed to be out of context in this instance – mean but have never had an explanation so far, though someone did say if you have to ask you wont be much use to us :{
For example: Does Exp mean Experienced or Exploration?
It would be really, really helpful to new players if someone were to compile a list of in game acronyms – maybe it would help to make them feel that they weren’t such noobs having to ask in game.

I do so agree, with the Quarterdime. Specially during the early lvls when you are really, really squishy, being sent into a cave to complete a mission, completing it then having to fight your way back out of the cave is a recipe for certain death, just because of what seems like almost instant respawn times, dammint I hate dying so much!
To all you people whining about having to form a group:
In GW1, it was REQUIRED for you to have 6-8 people for every mission. (You could fill the party with NPC henchmen, but you’d fail high level missions miserably with them). If you couldn’t complete the missions, there was NO WAY to progress without paying a runner 3k+ to run you to Droknar’s Forge.
GW2 requires only 5 players for the last mission. This is less than the requirements at any point for the GW1 story, which was considerably more limiting (and bugged, in many cases). I don’t understand the griping. GW2 is a MASSIVE step forwards for the genre.
And finally, my server is filled with people like you (posting in this thread), who never participate or want to form groups for anything. (Understandably, we always lose in WvW…). All they care about is “completing their personal story” like this was a single-player game and then once they finish, they start playing a different RPG. GW2 is NOT an RPG. It is an MMORPG, which is an entirely separate genre.
You might actually learn to enjoy the game if you simply played WvW, did a dungeon, or chatted with the other gamers you’re with every time you log online (it’s pretty easy to make small talk about anything with random strangers). Try it, then come back to this thread.
/end rant
Ummm! Being almost ‘forced’ to group in GW1 was one of the reasons I stopped playing it.
I’m not anti-social by any means in MMO’s and come from a background of 8+ years of City of Heroes. I grouped most of the time but also soloed a few chars to 50. I spent a lot of time soloing because of time zone issues and RL – just as I do here.
I would love to group more than I do but am put off applying to join a lot of groups because most of them broadcast looking for exp members – I assume exp means experienced in this instance and I do not consider myself experienced yet. I did inquire in chat if exp meant experienced and got the reply ‘yet another total noob’ sighs deeply
Yes! I too want to finish my ‘personal’ story and be able to solo it like the rest of it, it ticks me off that I won’t be able to unless I join a pug and have a couple of hours to spare without RL interruptions.
That goes for me also. I’ve tried Guildwars 2 wiki/crafting, though it’s pretty comprehensive it doesn’t say how to craft from the get go. i.e it says that to craft something requires the use of Discovery, but doesn’t explain exactly what ‘Discovery’ in this instance is. So I about as stuck as you are Nori.
