Sorry dude but you’re playing melee-mancer wrong if you’re having issues sticking to kiters. I dont have any issues sticking to my target. The problem is we lack any options for bursting our target down. Necro’s have all the skills we need to keep our target from escaping and keeping constant pressure on them but what we lack is the ability to finish off foes who have 10k hp< remaining before they kitten around for a few seconds waiting for their burst combo to come back up and turn the tides in their favor.
I’m not saying we need some cheap 1button victory option like PW spam or 1hb + haste, but kitten its annoying that no matter what way you build a necro it takes a kittening week to kill anything. Feast of corruption is supposed to be that option for condition necros but ofc the skill doesnt work properly and even then the base damage for the skill is so low it doesnt matter.
The axe #2 skill and the dagger #2 skill both have the potential to be good burst options for power/crit builds but are plagued by slow channel times and only doing avg damage at best.
So i was reading the post about pistol necro’s and it got me to thinking about necro with a greatsword and i decided to make a thread suggesting my idea for greatsword necro.
1st skill – “generic name for auto atack” does a semi-low amount of damage but gets double if the target foe has a condition. range of 900
2nd skill – “generic name for necro skill” caster of this spell swings his sword around unleashing a wave of zombie kittens (sarcasm) that damage and cripple foes in front of the caster.
3rd skill – the necro thrusts his sword into the ground summoning three undead hippopotamus’ that charge the foe and explode after landing a succesful atack or after 5 seconds. The explosion damages nearby enemies and poisons them.
4th skill – Necro swings his sword in a frenzy and soaks target foe in acid or some corrosive liquid, burning the foe.
5th skill – Caster raises his sword summoning a swarm of parasites to a target location that invade the bodies or whomever is withing the area, dealing more damage based on how much health foe’s in the area are missing.
Inb4 “cool story bro, this is a terrible idea, generic attempt at trolling the OP.”
The build you use is really close to the one i’ve been playing around with for two or three days now. I would highly suggest pair a dagger with a warhorn. Warhorn gives you a nice CC skill and swiftness buff that also cripples which helps you stick to your target if they like to kite alot. http://www.gw2build.com/builds/simulator.php#1.5.1.2.21.13.4.1.17.1.106.116.120.121.129.2.2.6.0.0.0.319.323.327.0.0.0.346.0.0.362.363.0.0.30.0.15.25 theres the build i use.
Great stuff, I want to experiment with Necro melee as I have always played it as a range class only i guess its time to research some dagger builds.
On a side note, is dagger also a Power dependant build only?
You can try crit rate/crit dmg. Ive been playing around with it and it works just as good as straight power. You also get a touch of condition damage through the curses trait line. I started usin this build the other day. I get bored alot so i like to mess around with builds and see what works lol http://www.gw2build.com/builds/simulator.php#1.5.1.2.21.13.4.1.17.1.106.116.120.121.129.2.2.6.0.0.0.319.323.327.0.0.0.346.0.0.362.363.0.0.30.0.15.25
How to counter pistol whip thieves; spectral walk or spectral armor. Once their haste buff runs out PW thieves are laughably useless. Heartseeker baddies can be dealt with through well timed dodges and either the warhorn #4 skill, spectral grab, flesh golem charge or dagger #3 skill. So far only thief i havnt figured out how to deal with is backstab thieves.
I honestly think people are exaggerating how bad DS is. It’s not perfect and definitely needs some work but it has saved me and allowed me to win fights i would have normally lost without it time and time again.
One thing i see alot of necros do when i pvp against them is to just sit in DS and just let their life force drain out spamming Life blast and ultimately decreasing their dps.
I only use lifeblast two or three times to stack might before i turn off DS to conserve meter so i can build it back up. I try my best to stay above 50% DS at all times, its nice having that “okitten 1hbwarrior baddie alert” button. F1, 3, F1 and i dont have to burn spectral armor to survive.
I run D/WH and S/D on my necro. The DS #2 skill has a low CD, is a gap, closer inflicts bleeding and chill on the target. The fear we have isnt that great but fills the role i need when im pvping and need to keep a foe locked down for kills, denying stomps, ect. Even though its only one second its still crowd control.
And to whoever thinks we have a lack of CC we have the warhorn #4 skills, spectral grasp utility skill, flesh golem charge, dagger has a snare and ofc the DS fear.
It seems to me that we need more reliable forms of burst in terms of raw dps and condition dmg. We dont have access to stability without fully speccing into DS, we don’t have a quickness buff or any kind of steroid buff to help us apply conditions or just do raw dps faster.
If I had to make a personal tier list for the classes in this game it’d be A tier: guardian mesmer thief. B Tier Ranger Warrior necro and C tier: ele and engineer
Just wait for them to make the first move. If you pick up lightning reflexs you get 4 successive dodges if you use shortbow. on top of that you’ll get 100% endurance regen after using lightning reflexes. Rangers have plenty of escape options and if you use a CC pet instead of a dps pet all you have to do is just dodge, harass and pick your moment to strike.
Traits 30/0/20/0/20
V VIII XI in MM
VI and IX in WS
I and IX in BM
Weapons: Shortbow and Axe/warhorn
Pets: Blackwidow spider and jungle spider
Utilities: Heal as one, Lightning reflexes, Signet of the wild, quickening zephyr and rampage as one.
Armor Runes: 6Runes of melandru
Weapon Sigils: Sigil of corruption for shortbow. Superior sigil of battle for axe and sigil of the hydromancer for warhorn.
Jewlery: Pvp Carrion amulet.
Strategy: This build is all about stacking bleeds while keeping yourself and your pets safe. You have ranged pets so you have minimal risk of your pet getting killed which is really important since if you switch pets in combat you will only have 15secs between each access to quickness buff as opposed to 60secs if you let your pet die and then switch. Lightning reflexes allows for escape from stun lock combo’s and gives you endurance regen. Signet of the wild provides addition stability options if you need it so you can choose to save rampage as one or if you expect a long team fight against alot of CC you can go for a solid 30seconds of stability. Your defensive stats will be “ok”, basically high enough to give you time to react to whats going on and press on one of your “ohkitten time to gtfo” buttons. Or you could just simply dodge roll for less intense situations. Runes of melandru help manage dots and stuns for when lightning reflexs or your other anti-CC skills are on Cooldown.
In summary, this build gives you condition damage like a necro or mesmer while have all the escape options of a thief.
I say just remove the whole death shroud state but keep the skills and life force. I like that we have some type of resource to manage. So instead of forcing us to take on a whole new form preventing us from using weapon/utility skills why not just make the 4skills we have access to in death shroud the necro f1-f4? Just keep the life force meter and have each skill use up an increasing amount based on how strong the skill is.
Basically life blast uses 1%/use with 0 CD. The DS #2 skill uses 5-10% life force with a reasonable CD. Doom uses 25% life force, but pleasekittenif it’s only going to be a 1sec fear can it at least be an AoE fear with a range of like 300-600 or something? Lastly, life transfer can take up 50% life force and instead heal for a small amount increasing based on how many targets are hit.

My meleemancer build. Traits are 30/20/0/20/0. Taking iv x and xii in spite. iv and viii in curses, and V and X in blood magic.
You’re extremly durable with this build with all the lifesteal you have. Even though the healing amounts are really low, because of how often you crit the healing amounts does add up to a pretty good amount if you kno how to stick to your target. and with all the CC this build its not that hard lol. You’re naturally faster than most people because of all the passive movement speed. Add in the warhorn 5 skill that also cripples and basically all you do is mash 1 until its time to go for the kill. You have 4 interrupts so preventing a target from healing or escaping shouldn’t be very hard. Spectral armor also allows you to live at very low amounts of health or if you find yourself in some onetrick-pony combo it will break you from the stun and severely reduce the dmg you take.
When i first made my necro i tried MM and it wasnt too bad on legend of the foe fire and battle of kyhlo. Since minions dontkittenas much on those two maps. The build i used was 20/0/30/0/20. This build gave me more dps but I had 0 sustain and no real way of finishing enemies off in 1v1 situations unless the flesh golem knock down was up and i had a few stacks of bleed on them. This build is really only good for all out offense (capturing points, taking svanir/chieftan, attacking enemy lord, ect.)
You could also go 0/0/30/20/20 which is a much tankier build and is much better if you are looking to defend points instead of capturing them.
For my necro my traits are 30/30/0/0/10. For spite I go iv x xii. Curses i go ii xii xi and soul reaping i use iii.
My weapons are Scepter/dagger and Axe/warhorn. I use runes of the lich in my armor so i can actually live long enough to not get blown up in 2hits but still do good condition dmg.
My utility skills are signet of spite corrupt boon and epidemic and my elite skill changes depending on the situation. I typically run flesh golem since the charge + warhorn 4 skil and DS fear is good for locking people down when trying to complete on a kill. i pick up lich form if i kno im going into a big fight vs alot of ranged and plague if im going into a fight vs alot of meleee
