I ended up going with thief – loving it so far!
I have tailoring and jeweling as my crafting for my mesmer. So far, not a bad choice. I can see how weaponsmithing/artificing could also be helpful, though.
I played around with an Ele for a little bit, but have a Mesmer and love it. The consensus seems to be that eles take more finesse to get down, more work to make really worthwhile, and can make for more difficult gameplay. Again, I haven’t played one, so I can’t give too much insight other than what other people have told me. I think, at the end of the day, though, it comes down to your style of play and what you’re looking for from a character. Don’t let a group of people in these forums talk you out of one or the other – you can always switch if you get into it and find that it’s not for you.
I haven’t found this to be a real problem. That being said, my ranger is still relatively new, and I find I don’t need anything but my bear to get me through thick and thin. haha.
As someone that has no real interest in dueling myself, I do think this would be a neat feature and would enhance the game for groups. Conflict is a natural part of human interaction – it seems only natural to carry this over into the game, especially with the number of safeguards discussed above for those that don’t wish to participate. And while I don’t RP, I could see how this would enhance that experience for those players as well.
I started with a human mesmer and LOVE it. I find that I’m pretty effective on my own, switching between staff and GS. The illusions don’t do much in the way of damage, but they can be good distractions when the time calls for it. I do find that I have to be careful about pulling too many enemies at once, but I think that’s the same with any of the professions. I’m almost lvl 30 on her now, and still really enjoy playing her.
I haven’t played a necro – I made one, but switched early on in the levels, since the gameplay felt unnatural to me. Sorry I can’t be of more help in that department.
Good luck making your choice!
I wanted to play a Norn since they were introduced in Eye of the North. Plus, the idea of having a Norn ranger just made perfect sense to me when I was thinking through what I wanted to roll for the release of GW2. Don’t regret the decision!!
If you like both professions’ play styles, I’d suggest considering armor looks.
For showing bio-glow/skin:
female light armor > male light armor > female medium armor > male medium armorI scrapped my male Sylvari Ranger because the medium armor frustrated me, it is almost all very buttoned up and full coverage on the males.
But, if you don’t care about that sort of thing, I hear Thief is very fun to play and good at PvP! And they do have some very spiffy hats.
And I hate to say it, but I find my Elementalist to be harder to play and less rewarding than my other two characters (Ranger, Necro), it is sort of like playing the game on a different difficulty setting. However I don’t have a Thief so they may be a hard class for all I know.
Best of luck with your choice!
Thanks for the insight! I’m a girl, so I would be lying if I said that the armor choices didn’t play some sort of factor. I already have a mes, so I might go thief just for something completely different. I’ve heard a lot of complaints about the elementalist difficulties, though some insist that it is just that it takes a little more patience to play and learn to be good at it. lol.
I want to run a Sylvari, but am having a really hard time deciding which profession I want to go with. I have it narrowed down to either a Thief or an Elementalist – anyone have any words of wisdom to help a girl out?
Takes alot of trial and error to play ele great and its not as facerolly as some unmentioned professions. But honestly, its in my opinion one of the best professions if you have time and willpower to learn to master it. Took me way past 80 to actually fully use all the available resources and im still learning new tricks here and there and fully figuring out other professions as to what to avoid and what not.
Did you find that it was harder to get to lvl 80 using this profession?
The elementalist requires effort to play, like the Mesmer, but grants you lesser results. It’s a bit weak because of that. It also has several other problems, like an almost meaningless downed state, weak traits, poor trait synergy, weak underwater combat, and mediocre elite skills.
Taking all this into account, it seems to be a deal-breaker, but do not get disheartened by that: elementalists are very fun to play, and are strong and “complete” enough for you to go through pve.
You’ll soon realize that the elementalist feels like an “almost-complete” profession that just needs to be tweaked at several points to be fine. It’s not game-breaking to some people, but it might be to others.
I don’t mind putting in the effort so long as I feel like I’m getting some results out of it. haha. Do you have any suggestions for a particular trait to increase to help balance out some of these deficiencies?
In pve its decent but if your unsure if it fit your playstyle i suggest you play around with it in the mists.
Yes, I would definitely play it PvE. Never been much of a PvPer. Thanks for the feedback!
I was thinking of running an ele, but based on what some people are saying on here, it sounds like it’s not even worth my time. I’m just not good as a tank, and I already have an engineer, mes and ranger. Looking for something different, that still fits my play style.
Are these the ramblings of a few disgruntled players that don’t want to put in the time to make an ele great, or is it really this bad?
SUPER helpful! Thanks so much!
I’ve been playing my female Human Mesmer for awhile now, but keep seeing other players, comparable in level, with beautiful armor, while I’m stuck with the country armor. Does anyone know where I can find a listing of all the mesmer armor and how to craft/where to find it it? I can’t seem to find anything anywhere, and I’d like to have something to work towards.
PS – Do you have a favorite armor set?
Thanks for the response, naqaden! I’ll definitely check you guys out!
Hello all!
I’m looking for a casual guild to join, now that I’m getting to some of the harder content of the game. I’ve been played Guild Wars for a long time, but now that I am in law school I find that my time to do anything other than read is designated to the weekend hours. Please read below for a little about me and what I am looking for in a guild. If you think that I would be a good fit, please leave me a message here, send me a PM, or Message me in game (Phaedra Aloga)!
I’m a 24 year-old law student, just starting my last year of law school. On top of all that, I work during the week, and am in a long-term relationship, so I don’t necessarily have as much time to devote to any game as I’d really like to. I’m really looking for a group of people that don’t expect me to log in everyday – that’s an impossibility. I’m active when I can be active, but there are times where I have to disappear for weeks at a time.
There is nothing I like more in life than laughing. I love to joke around, and I can be downright quirky, so any guild I’m part of has to have a good sense of humor! That being said, I am really looking for a group of mature, respectful people.
Size doesn’t really matter to me – it’s the quality that I’m really interested in.
Lastly, and maybe most importantly, I’m looking for patience. I’ve never been a hardcore gamer, so there are some things that take me a little while to get down. I can take criticism, don’t get me wrong, but at the end of the day I am looking for a group that will help me, as opposed to just telling me how stupid I am and using me as an “example” for why girls shouldn’t play video games. (Yes, this has happened before…)
If you think that your guild might be a good fit for me, please contact me! I would love to get to know you and your guild – this is all about finding the right group of quirky individuals. I’m an open book, so if you want to know more about my style of play, or what I am looking for in a guild, ask away!
Talk to you soon!
