Fair enough! Good luck and see if it works for you. I’d recommend thrill of the crime btw to give better group support – but I had guildies run uncatchable before.

As for Life Leech – yeah it’s very strong. If you share with 4-5 guys and all spike the same target then it’s golden. That’s unlikely to happen though I think, and even then I would go so far as to say it’s a bit of a waste if you’re only downing 1 or 2 guys. Taking cooldowns into consideration you’ll likely do more damage as a power build spamming Cluster Bomb I think.

All I can say is that in my experience it’s not that great. However since the feature patch I guess we’re all treading new ground to a certain extent.

Play around with both guys! A few months back people were trying to say that thieves as a profession had no place in large scale WvW – meanwhile all the top guilds were running 1 or 2 of them in raids haha

Experiment and see what works for you and your guild. ^^

Fair point, but how many thieves do you expect to be running with in a 20 – 30 man group? As for ‘just run with some necros’ (of course you will be), again this sounds simple but the reality is usually quite different in my experience. Usually half an enemy raid will be guardians :/

Both make valid points, but lets face it guys, in large scale fights you’ll be dealing with almost perma stability and constant cleansing.

Don’t get me wrong I love the idea of venoms, but I just don’t feel it’s as effective. Delving that deep into SA takes away from Critical Strikes, Acrobatics and Trickery too… I’ve just never felt it’s worth the trade off, particularly when a thief can aoe spike so well (which is really what counts in zerg fights).

Each to their own though.

Venoms, while seeming nice on paper, are not that great in practice.

Concentrate on your Shortbow for cluster bomb (usually don’t detonate it) and choking gas. Daggerstorm and warrior steal for big burst.

I stick with Divinity since I roam with a staff ele and we can stack 2 mins of swiftness at the drop of a hat, so Traveller runes don’t offer as much to me personally.

If you don’t have the ability to keep swiftness up though Traveller seems to be the runes of choice for most.

I’m not sure who you guys have running your community management team, but they seem to lack even the slightest grasp of what a competitive pvp forum looks like.

Of course you need to slap people wrist now and again, but what you seem to be doing is effectively killing off the most passionate part of your community here.

That’s right, Passionate.

Some people have spend the last year working for their servers, each server has it’s own characters and feel.

For example what you saw in the SFR vs Vizunah vs Piken, matchup threads should have seemed like pure gold to you. Here were huge numbers of incredibly passionate people posting about something that mattered a great deal to them. Of course there was going to be some smack talk.

This is a pvp game mode, have you ever played one before? These are actually the most important people you have in your game – the people keeping it alive.

When people get mad, it’s because they care. Don’t silence them.

Agree that maybe the speed could be improved on some attacks but I actually think SB is quite strong. In smaller scale it’s more of a situational or utility weapon true, but it’s the go-to weapon of choice for thieves that raid in WvW guilds. Choking gas is an excellent source of poison and 4-5k aoe crits with cluster bomb is pretty strong.

Fights are much more enjoyable in tPvP, imho, where your own player skill actually matters rather than rolling over a less organised/experienced team with a 20+ man train.

Well, to a certain extent I agree actually. Although I prefer small scale (max 5 guys, ideally 2 or 3) in wvw to tpvp due to greater build diversity. Also the fights feel more dynamic. But you’re quite correct to a certain extent individual skill shines more in small fights.

But then it’s a different style of play. As you said organisation and experience play a big roll in GvG/ZvZ – different kind of skill.

In the GvG video you see my guild facing Mya – at the time one of the top GvG guilds in EU. Our thieves role was harrasment and support and his job was made very difficult by an excellent group of opponents. :P

I would welcome someone to give an example of thief PoV at that level of GvG doing a better job if you can find it! (I’m sure they are out there but I could not find one ^^)

Sorry to spam a bunch of vids, but you get the picture, and hopefully you guys will enjoy.

Thieves are great in both ZvZ and GvG, most guilds run at least 1. Of course you have more guards, wars, staff ele’s etc but thieves bring a lot to the table and can sustain just fine – you just need to get the single target burst mentality out of your head. Saying they are not wanted is just plain wrong.

Blast finishers, daggerstorm, warrior steal, ranger steal (most visible and one of the best waterfields) SB does excellent damage to multiple targets. Choking Gas is very powerful on enemy regroups. Signet of Malice will help you sustain.

In GvG thieves do the same as above, only periphery pressure is more of a focus. SoM can be swapped out for Withdraw. Most good guilds run at least 1 thief in GvG.

um a thief is not wanted for ZvZ or GvG. Maybe 1 for scouting, but that’s it. The only class worse in this area is ranger.

That’s just so spectacularly wrong it borders on hilarious.

Resetting a fight is pretty much par for the course in WvW and nearly every class can do it, just so happens that Thieves, Mesmers and Warriors are very good at it.

I’ve done it myself on Thief countless times, when a single mistake is made and a Warrior or Mesmer nearly downs me in 2 hits or one shatter – but clearly the fair and honourable thing would have been to just stand still and let him kill me right?

Funny enough I’ve also done it on my Warrior, when a D/P thief has been repeatedly blinding, stealthing and backstabbing me to death. But then I guess the honourable thing would have been to just stand still and let him keep backstabbing me right?

Players will always whine about bags that get away. That’s fine and human nature.

People will always run if they are in an untenable situation. That’s just using your brain.

A thief running with the zerg or guild does three things. Blast fields, heavy AoE damage and in prolonged fights or GvG, pressure the periphery.

I won’t be allowed to share guild builds here but what I will say is that signet of malice is your friend, as is dodging. Gear wise you can go similar to Wish’s D/D set-up.

Shortbow is likely to be your main weapon, Daggerstorm your elite. Steal to a Warrior, Daggerstorm, use the Steal. You’ll see some glorious numbers!

It’s a popular myth that thieves can’t handle zergs – this simply isn’t the case. Just be careful of chokes.

Aside from Anet doing something to bring skill lag to an all new high, personally really enjoying the matchup so far.

Now CoN have most of our guys here wiping the blobs has never been so much fun, particularly the entire Kodash zone a couple of times in hills yesterday. ^^

Also some great roaming in the mornings. Dueled a BuLL d/d ele yesterday morning I think. You destroyed my thief several times (but I’ll be the first to admit I suck at thief). Then I brought my Warrior and you underestimated me in our first duel. The next one we’ll call a draw since it simply would not end. Whoever you are, I had a great time and you’re a very good player.

Also a nice epic duel against a Kodash warrior between hills and the north east camp. I think I would have won cleanly but sadly a couple of guys from my side intervened and ruined a great fight.

To the BuLL engi this morning. Sorry for bullying you 3v1, but I hate engineers almost as much as I hate mesmers.

Finally thanks to our new home for welcoming us so warmly. We’re having a great time on The Rock so far!

As far as the ‘incident’ goes, everyone who has ever taken any form of pvp seriously knows that tensions are high and tempers get raised all too quickly. Just look at our forums.

I’ve been in situations like this when someone is ‘in the way’ during a GvG… usually they get a polite ‘could you move please, it’s a gvg, spectators go on the hill’. It’s not uncommon for someone to become rude when this is ignored though. Sad that it happens but that’s human nature. Especially when you’re all tense before a GvG (yes, in a GvG you experience genuine tension and adrenaline! :o ).

It’s natural for someone to react to someone being rude. However, a word for all the people defending this Dev(-on Carter) <trololol>…

I’m sure I’m not the only one with experience in working in the games industry here. If you, as a player, think that an employee can act like that towards a games community and get away with it, you’re very wrong. Professionals just cannot act like that. Hence the Dev post in this thread.

You did not need these guild members in order to win the matchup. Why not let them have an honourable and fair fight?

That GC clearly take a ‘Laissez-faire’ attitude towards these events speaks volumes.

There can be no justification for it. You didn’t need the players for the points, and apparently MoS did not need the bags. The only reason was to ruin other peoples fun.

5 roaming guildmembers are what GuildWars 2’s combat (along with cooldowns, AoE-cap etc.) is adjusted to. But have fun with being blind.

You know where you find good fights now. KoA tried smallscale while being on Kodakittens your turn to prove if you are worth a “good fight” on Kodash.

I’m not sure where you’ve got the ‘elitist’ thing from man, and from most of the recent comments from you guys it does seem a little hypocritical. Maybe you got the wrong impression from my post…

CoN always have respect for our opponents. Do your thing if you want, that’s cool. We, as a guild and mostly as a server prefer the larger scale fights, it’s what we’ve always enjoyed and we are not the only ones.

You may have noticed, on your roaming missions, these things called Keeps. They are not there to encourage small roaming groups to congregate. I don’t think this is what the culling fix was added for either. Many might have a different view on how and why the AoE cap was implemented too.

Both styles of play are as legitimate as the other, it’s just that Kodash seems to have more people enthusiastic for the small scale stuff. That’s fine!

We’re as bored of this match-up as you guys, so please lets just try and stay respectful of how each other want to play the game, even if the current match up can’t facilitate it.

Why was it possible with the most zergy servers known in gw2, then? Jade Sea, Elona, Baruch Bay… all of these servers offer a broad range of decent 5-10 mans roaming the maps, sneaking, supporting, flanking, whatever…

To me personally small scale is the only place were individual player skills really shine. I was just expecting so much more of it in this matchup, because I remembered you guys as very fight and skill focused players.

You’re right and wrong – at least from my perspective.

I agree that small scale tends to let individual skill shine. But remember that a roaming player has a completely different set-up to a player that is focused on 20+ fights.

If by chance you have not had the opportunity to take part in organised fights of larger groups, you would be surprised at the amount of skill and coordination that goes into making such groups truly effective. Guild groups of 20+ build specifically to work well in tandem with our team-mates.

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

I have a thief I use for roaming and duels, and am happy to say I’ve enjoyed some nice duels with you guys from kodash (and occasionally Deso). They get interupted from time to time but as you say, you guys are usually very honourable and up for a 1 on 1. Kudos!

You must understand that guild raids are what we live for though – when you hit that 25 vs 25ish sweet spot against an organised guild, it’s simply the best thing this game can offer at the moment.

You INVI by far are the only guild that is trying to move apart from the blobs in this matchup. Now that KoA left Kodash. Wish more guilds would be like you.

BdaS, Bots, Buka, FB, FORT, Kegl, NSG, WdR, why – just to name a few. You might have run into some of them with your 30 guildees + adds…

Out of all of those guilds only Bots mean anything to me. But even so, as much as I respect those guys they just don’t have the numbers. The other guilds are so small in presence or effectiveness I just have not noticed them. I’m not trying to be dis-respectful, but about 25-30 is pretty standard for a guild raid – groups of 5 roaming guild members just don’t get noticed or are more of an annoyance than a real threat.

Anyway, as always respect to our opponents and we hope for some good fights in what’s left of this broken match-up.
