New Player Crafting

If you learn up to 400 it is not hard to craft something just to sell it and buy something you actually need. For example I just made some weapons I did not need and used the profit to buy some Medium Armour I wanted but could not make. Had I not learned to make those weapons it would have taken goodness how long to get the gold together.

There is nothing fast about riding a mount. The place is so full of mobs you would have to stop, kill something, get back on, ride fior a few seconds, stop and so on.

Of course you could take the option so well described above by maddoctor and not stop but let your mount and then maybe yourself die.

Then again you could just ignore mobs until you reach your destination when you would have to kill the few that were still with you. Next you could retrace your steps resurrecting those other players who died at the hands of the groups of mobs you left behind.

Imagine 5 people on mounts all ignoring mobs. Imagine the small groups of frustrated mobs all over the place killing lesser mortals than yourself.

If you want a mount in Lions Arch or a major city/town that’s fine. No mobs there. Just make sure they are set to disappear like the minipets when it starts to get busy.

Levels 1-60 are boring.

Perhaps it would be a good idea to compare with other games.

I think any game seems too slow if available playtime is low.

I would certainly say GW2 is the fastest levelling game I can think of. Guildwars was also very fast but with a low level cap.

Maybe better to say that lowish levels are boring. a level 20 dungeon or two would help, ones which could be completed with level 20 characters with level 20 gear and level 20 skills/traits of course.

Also worth saying that when starting a new profession it can be good to have time to learn skills and weapons as you level up.

The birthday rewards allowing you to start a character at level 20 might feel good to some. Probably a popular sale for Gems if it isn’t there already (can’t login right now.

As an aside my wife had to go away for a weekend on a work thing. I had the time. ÇDont want to sound like a complete nerd

We do use big guns when taking down dragons. The Claw of Jormag is shot from the sky by those big guns then robots carry bombs to it and finish it off. As far as I know we don’t have an exct location on where these things are unless we see them so how do we aim at their lairs?

I started a Thief this week. Day one was level 0 to 20. Day two level 20 to 30. Some hearts can be boring, I skipped those and will go back at level 80 when I start the exploration. Best guess about 16 to 18 hours of play with breaks.

It is too easy to level up. I would rather it took longer.

Several things here.

Number 3 longbow skill. It is generally referred to as the Stealth Skill. It does buff the pet too, giving a speed boost. I use it, with only a few exceptions when near death, so my pet will get to what I am shooting at quickly.

Number 4 Longbow Skill. The pushback. Very annoying for everyone in a group including other Rangers. As a Ranger I also might need to run closer, with a longbow the further from the target the better so it does sometimes knock it out of my range. However when alone it can be quite literally a life saber so Rangers need it, removing it is not an option.

Remember Guardians have a skill which can hook onto up to 5 targets and pull them to him/her which is also a pain in the neck. The thief has a utility skill which sends out some kind of rope and pulls a single mob to him. The ranger is not the only class which can move mobs across the battlefield. The guardian needs that skill as does the thief.

I am really craving for a sequel to GW1...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

If GW2 was too much like GW we would be talking about how bad that was.

I do miss the consequences though. Fight my way across the map, die 3 times and my health would be so low I might have to start again which could be a real pain at times. Missions and Quests could fail many times because they could be very hard. Here we fight the Shatterer with a good sized army, remember fighting the Drought in GW and having to repeat so many times? I seem to remember that if we did not kill the Drought we could not get to the maps beyond it?

However I do love playing Guildwars 2. I find it relaxing most of the time. I play other games when I feel the need for an adrenaline rush.

I have played with a gaming kb plus one of those super gaming mice full of buttons etc. KB name I cannot remember but I do remember the mouse was a Razer something. Now I play with what is probably the cheapest MS keyboard and MS Mouse. I find my current setup is as good as the fancy stuff I had been using. I changed because of an accident involving coffee but very happy now.

Personal Story - Final Reward

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Thord.2017

Thord.2017

The best GW ending imho was at the end of Factions. Some won’t know it so here it is, although my last viewing was maybe 3 years ago.

Kill final boss, same as every other game I suppose. Next you get to take quite a long walk along a pathway in what I think was the Royal Palace. Along the way the path was sometimes lined with soldiers other times by various NPCs you had met in the game. There was a Phoenix which could be tamed by a Ranger or a character whose second profession was a Ranger, the only place you could get the Phoenix until much later so a really cool thing to have. The reward was an Amulet which could be exchanged for one of many unique ítems.

For me it was like being the hero in an epic movie. I still have the screenshot with me, my wife and some NPC Heroes lined up. I remember having the pet, I had to repeat as a Warrior/Ranger to get that, but no idea which unique ítem I chose.

It is less about the reward more about the achievement. A one off opportunity to chose a unique weapon would be nice. Most important though would be something epic to happen. Think of the end of Star Wars Episode 4, some place filled with countless soldiers all there to salute you as you receive your Amulet.

If you played Factions you will know the kind of thing I mean.

Birthday noisemaker? The birthday gun not only makes a silly noise but shoots cakes into the air. What more could anyone want?

Pretty much everything in the game is transient. Gear comes and goes. New chars at level 20 or 30 are son level 80 and that initial boost is forgotten about. A special skin would probably not look as you want it or simply the wrong armour type.

Minis go on forever. I still miss walking around with my Mini Prince Rurik but as much as I love having the skin for his flaming sword I don’t have even one character who ever uses a sword. Keep giving minis but give a random mini.

Keep the rest. All i still have from my birthdays are minis, birthday guns and those sarn level 20 tokens wasting space but I can’t bring myself to delet them juuuuuust in case.

Where to farm?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Thord.2017

Thord.2017

Google the lodestones. I have a vague memory that those I think you want mainly drop in a dungeon or fractals. You just need to make sure you enter the actual full name of your lodestone in Google not just “lodestone”.

T6 mats in general. I don’t think there is a best map exactly because it depends upon what you want to farm for. My method is just farm where i don’t get bored as quickly which by coincidence if Frostgorge Sound at the moment, I tend to sell a lot of the mats I find and use the gold to buy the mats I actually want from someone else.

I read the other day that the WvW maps have drops which are easier to find there than in the PvE maps. I think the one I read about was the highest type of blood.

There is almost always a Champ Train in Frostgorge Sound. Go there, ask where it is then follow the army of players. If you don’t want to farm only champions then stay away from the Frostgorge Train IMHO. You will probably find more mats by normal farming.

I was away for a while too. In the abscence of anyone better able to answer on the Frostgorge buff question here it is as I Heard it on various map chats. In a lot of places certain named mobs etc were dropped from Champion to Veteran. That means some maps are not worth farming for champions. Frostgorge kept its Champions, none became Veterans therefore Frostgorge is still a good place to go. Less people farming champs on other maps more in some other places such as Frostgorge which were not nerfed.

Common ? and Tips for PvE Newbies

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Thord.2017

Thord.2017

I have been taking part in pretty much every world boss event most days. A fun thing to do and the loot is OK. You can do 3 or 4 from low levels, check the Wiki for “World Bosses”

I also spend just 30 to 40 minutes a day farming for decent loot, that is to say find a place with plenty of things you can kill quickly, do so then run back to the start of your route and repeat without a break. Everything that drops is worth something and it adds up very quickly. Google the best places to “farm” if you like but you will probably easily find places which suit you best on your own. It does get boring so don’t over do it, I do 30 to 40 minutes because one food item with extra magic find lasts 30 minutes and any for me any longer gets too boring, better 30 minutes a day than giving up through boredom after 1 week.

Collect everything I see, even T1 wood is worth selling so ignore nothing.

Everything else is salvaged. Worth mentioning for the benefit of newer players that salvaging a rare level 80 item can give Ectoplasm which is used in crafting those items which sell for a lot of gold. If you do decide to salvage for Ectoplasm for your own crafting rather than buy it use the best Salvage Kit to get the most from each salvage. Lesser items can be salvaged with less than the best Salvage Kits because of diminishing returns as you work your way down from the best gear to the lowest (white).

I put the money I make from loot etc towards making something. The last couple of days that has been a bow which each sold for 40g, I added about 15g to buy some of the materials I needed from earlier profits.

I mentioned level 80 a lot there because it takes only a short time to levelup that far so there are newish players even at the highest levels. If you are just starting to play then be patient, you will not make lots of gold for a while. At the low levels just kill and collect everything you see, sell what you don’t need but if possible sell at the Black Lion Auction House never the Merchant, if it says “List this item” it is normally best not to.

Learn crafting. You will levelup very quickly that way and when you reach the high tiers you can start to sell your things for good money.

Eat magic find food. I would say learn to make it yourself but you can buy it at the Black Lion Trading House. The +% magic find you get will mean what you kill will drop better loot which is worth more money.

I have just been running around one of the WvW places. Did about 70% of 1 of 4 in just over an hour. I used the W key and Space bar, killed a few Skritt and nothing else. Including WvW is the stupidest idea I can think of. PvE involves a bit of work whereas WvW places are so easy to do it is ridiculous. It has nothing at all to do with exploring it is just about making all players who want to complete the achievement run mindlessly around maps.

Only challenge is going to be waiting for my server to own the bits I need to get to. Zzzzzz.

An idea I just read about in another Forum. How about some kind of tag showing that a PvE player is running around a PvP map for the purposes of exploration? I have seen in another game, that all players can occupy the same map with an on/off toggle making it impossible for a PvP player to attack a PvE player.

The only reason against I can think of would be a PvP player spying on the opposing team but from what I know spying would not give any or much advantage. In fact it is easy for someone to change servers for the purposes of spying.

If the toggle could not be changed without leaving the map that would putoff PvP players from doing what some might think of as cheating such as a PvP player moving from one part of the map to another with it being impossible for that player to be attacked.

PvE players don’t mind going anywhere we just don’t want to be forced to PvP.

What do you think PVP on PVE maps?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Thord.2017

It couldn’t be based upon race. The only playable race which ever fought the others was the Charr vs The Rest more or less. In other words you would have to go back to the time of Guild Wars 1 and make it Charr on one side with everyone else on the other. Couldn’t be between Guilds because of the big differences in the size of Guilds. Other games that included open world PvP have only a few groups fighting each other, mostly two groups I think.

Ascended itams and WvW map complition

Thord.2017

There are achievements for WvW (A Dolyak’s best friend, etc), PvP (Gladiator, etc), PvE (Tequatl, etc), Edge of the Mists, Dungeons, Celebrations and a few other seperate sections.

The only achievement I can see which overlaps is Exploration. I have been playing since before GW2 was released, Exploration requiring players who are PvE only to visit the WvW maps has been complained about almost since the beginning, it has not changed and I think never will.

We have The Mists. Within the Mists are Worlds, the World of Tyria is just one of those Worlds. WvW locations and Fractals are also in the Mists connected to Tyria through portals (Gates) in Lion’s Arch. The World of Tyria has Continents including one also called Tyria and another called Cryta (in GW1 that is where the Factions expansion happens). The continent of Tyria is where PvE takes place. I am happy to be corrected on any of that

The Exploration Achievement is described as an Achievement for the exploration of Tyria not the exploration of Guildwars 2 Maps. They either need to change the wording or change the required places to explore to include only Tyria.

Regarding the salvaging issue. I agree but would go further to include all Soulbound Items as well.

What do you think PVP on PVE maps?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Thord.2017

I have experienced 2 games where PvP was allowed in PvE areas.
-1st one meant as a lowish level character working my way up through the ranks I got jumped on by groups of PvP guys too often. Some places were even impossible to get to alive making the main quest very hard to do about 40% into it.
- 2nd one PvE players were safe because there was an on/off option making it impossible to be attacked by a PvP player unless you chose to play that way. That game turned into maybe 70% PvP, not my thing so I stopped playing.

I did play a game which had a map only for PvP but with the same look and feel as a PvE map. No castles or whatever to fight over but just which side controlled which parts of the map. A tiny bit like choosing to be Centaur or Seraph in a big map with a dungeon, events, resetting hearts and places to fight over which were a bit like camps or ruins where everything was about players hand-to-hand.

BTW. If someone does make this possible there are a few places I want to go to on the WvW maps, can we make it possible to PvE there please? Been away a couple of years but I think there are places there needed for world exploration and I saw a jumping puzzle somewhere there I would like to at least try to do.

Mounts [merged]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Thord.2017

I used to be Guild Leader in another game, which had mounts. We organized races atended by a few Guilds so lots of people riding over 4 or 5 Regions. We caused problems for people playing normally the first couple of times in that we aggroed what became very big groups of mobs, when they lost interest in us those “normal” players attracted the mobs and often died.

We were lucky. If a level 80 ran through a starter area he/she was ignored by the mobs. So, we changed it so the race took part in low level areas. Competitors below level x got mobbed and died in general but had some fun. Couldn’t happen in GW2.

Just picture it here. From time to time a mount runs past followed by a group of mobs. Mobs get bored and attack you instead. It happens a bit now but is mostly manageable. With mounts it is too easy to run faster than mobs, pull lots of them and leave them for others to cleanup. Mounts become more popular. More mob trains killing walking players and so on. Noooooo unless you keep it in WvW.

A Serious Problem

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Thord.2017

Thord.2017

Sorry to hear you having such problems.

My favourite at the moment is the Guardian. I also like the Warrior but he started to get a tiny bit boring, maybe in the future he will be played more often.

I find with my playstyle he has the highest survivability, having to return to a waypoint after death can be a bit demoralising at times but not as much with this guy. Much easier to solo something big and scary with this guy, I can even do a tiny bit of damage while running away without having to hit with a weapon, not much but it does help, nice kiting something big knowing as I run I am gaining health without using skills, healing my self of being seriously poisoned and dishing out that tiny bit of damage.

I like the feeling when I am in a group, whether a Dungeon or Event, I can give some bonuses to those closeby, pull a mob off someone having problems (it is skill that pulls up to 5 mobs to me if they aren’t too far away). Maybe I should add that I don’t have to trait away from damage to give a boost to ther players so I don’t suffer from losing the damage I dish out it just means my boosts are a bit weaker but they do help. I tried supportish with a Warrior using an Axe and Horn, damage was lower than I liked. Although critical hits do a lot less damage than my Warrior it is good to see that there is plenty of damage over time happening too thanks to my skills.

You mentioned cool looking armour. Maybe it would be a good idea to make a character and walk around Lions Arch for a short time seeing which race looks best for what you eventually decide to have a go with. There can be big differences in the way they look, even a Norn and a Human, despite the fact that they are wearing exactly the same gear.

By the way, took me ages to find my favourite class. I was Warrior then Elementalist then Thief then back to Warrior until level 80 only to find myself having more fun with the Guardian. I know how it feels.

Lastly I will add that I like this guide to the Guardian which includes a build with quite a lot of explanation. I still more or less use that build now despite having been at level 80 for maybe a month or more http://guildwars.incgamers.com/blog/comments/greatsword-guardian-leveling-build/

They aren’t going to keep the mini’s, look at what they did with Guild Wars 1. You can’t get some items because they were once in a lifetime. The cogs and everything will be used for next year probably, but the mini’s will be different, and the 3 you couldn’t make will be gone forever. At least that’s what ArenaNet’s PR couldn’t deny for me when I talked to support

Guildwars Pets were mostly the same they did not change. Wintersday has always given a Polar Bear. The only event that ever had a different pet was and is the Canthan New Year event because that event was based on the Chinese thing with year of the dog, year of the cat, etc so the pet changed to dog, cat, etc. We really won’t know what happens with pets in Guildwars 2 but I thought it worth saying as long as we are comparing pets in the two versions of Guildwars.

Secondly Minis don’t have to take up any space in the Inventory or normal Bank slots. Below your slots in the bank is a special section for minis, just right click on the mini and deposit it in the same way as crafting materials.

I suggest that you make another mini and store it. Although they are currently account bound things like that do tend to be changed on some things so then you can sell them in the TP. If they do unbind them there will be loads on the TP at first so, because they use no storage space, hang on to it til the price goes up.

Is there a way to make leveling entertaining?

The thing is when you do reach level 80 you will find yourself running around maps just like you can now. You will be doing Events. You will be visiting dungeons. You will be in WvW, if you like that thing of course. You will be in PvP from what you wrote. Nothing very new really just different. I suggest you look around he Forums a bit, plenty of people get bored at level 80 because they feel they have done everything.

It reads as if you don’t like the game. If you don’t enjoy it now I doubt you ever will.

I enjoy MMOs. I enjoy teaming up with others to visit instances/dungeons. But I bought Guildwars 2 because I played and loved so much Guildwars, I didn’t care if it was going to be online/offline/mmo/rpg or whatever. My thing in GW2 is exploring PvE content, I do the occasional Dungeon but for me the best bit is Events. I suppose that more or less makes me a solo player.

The only thing I would like to have seen is a way for solo players to get the minis. Keep Tixx and his scary toys as they are but everyone should be able to get those minis regardless of how they play. Doesn’t make a difference to me but I do get your point.

It happened to me last night on the last of a few runs. I assumed it was just very diminishing returns from dungeons.

- I would like a Hero called “Princess Doll”. One should be enough.
- A new Class called “Princess Doll” with matching hitpoints and skills.
- An Elite skill for existing classes called “Princess Doll”.

PS Do something with the pink dress first. Something a bit more manly for me would be better. Please find enclosed picture of Chukie.

What profession to play for dungeon?

I found my elementalist and thief levelled up faster than my warrior. My guardian was the fastest of all. The only reason those two soft characters are 60ish is I got a bit bored with the classes. Thief died the most, then warrior followed by ele and lastly guardian. If you are finding ele/thief slow to level it might be that you are just better at playing something not so squishy, have a go with warrior and guardian see how it goes.

I find both warrior and ele to be high on DPS as you mentioned it. My thief is lower on the ladder. You might read stuff about a Guardian being low DPS but I find although he is less than a warrior he does well enough. My personal DPS order is Warrior, Ele, Guardian/Thief but as I said with my playstyle the Guardian doesn’t die as much as the others and death slows you down with XP I would say.

Worth saying that all characters but IMO especially those wearing light armour have to dodge a lot. Also with soft characters never stay still, before you start a fight check what is around you before you walk backwards into something big and scary Don’t think that just because your thief holds melee weapons he can just stand still without dieing, he can’t

You said level 15 which is about the level at which you might finish your starting area but if you move onto the next level map it can start to get a bit tough. You seem to want to get on with levels but spend a short time on an easier map, just a couple of levels helps a lot. IMO you won’t really get a feel for a character type until at least level 20 so be patient and just do those next few levels before giving in, take 20 as a minimum I would have said 30 but you sound bored.

Sumary: Go to at least level 20. If you still find the game too slow try a warrior or guardian, IMO a guardian is bit more fun.

EDIT: Oops, I was enjoying writing that so much I forgot that you specifically asked about Dungeons. The best class in a Dungeon is the one you enjoy the most and are best at. The only bad class is one that spends too much time dead which would mean that the player is doing something wrong. I would never dare take my thief into a Dungeon I am not a good thief at all so Thord.2017 would be the wrong class, then again if Thord.2017 was a Guardian he would be very welcome I am sure cos that is the class I am best at.

I am killing a few dolls, grabbing the present, then killing the rest but I am a guardian, I dread to think how a soft character copes. It seems logical for them to stay as long as a dead body but it doesn’t seem to.

Chinese New Year was actually Canthan New Year which is there because of a GW expansion (Factions). We don’t have anything oriental so I doubt it.

I was just in the first Guildwars checking out what was there.

I picked up a quest, something to do with finding and saving some reindeer. It occured to me that some kind of thing like the personal story which of course can be done alone would have given you what you are asking for. That or maybe scatter some NPCs about for you to find in the world like that we already have, something like the white moa thing in GW1, but not sure if that would be any better than those giftboxes all over the place for you?

Complete rewrite of post!

I have been checking the Guildwars Wiki on the subject of mini pets. Every christmas we had/have the same minipets. If they do the same in Guildwars 2 then all we need to do is wait a year.

There have been unique pets but the only ones connected with celebrations were for one off events such as the release of expansions. The only annual pets which changed were those for the Canthan New Year (Cantha had an oriental theme so year of the frog, year of the rat, etc meaning pet frog, pet rat and so on).

Hope that helps. GW2 is not the same game but I suppose we have to wait and see.

You only get reward once a day.

If I get more mini mats by repeating in Lions Arch then I will but so far we have been told we will not. If those mats in giftboxes I might grind a bit though. So far they say we will not.

Day one I went twice. First time for the reward and second time to find there are only boxes I can easily get in world.
Day two I went once. No intention to go again.

Total so far 3. Total expected 6 or 7 unless they give rewards worth having which I doubt.

Edit 17/12 09:30

My thought when starting this thread was that Anet should know if we don’t intend to bother repeating. I know they can easily see how many repeat without the Forum but here we can say why. People seem to be saying exactly that but this thread might be easier for them to read rather than the comments getting lost in other threads.

Who is to say the lions arch dungeons won’t reset daily? We are not even past the first day yet. Why don’t we wait and see once he gets to LA?

The people in Europe who have tested it after their reset time.

It doesn’t reset.

I think you will find it is at each city for 24 hours, after that it changes completely with a different dungeon/instance. When it gets to Lions Arch we can choose which dungeon/instance we either want to repeat or do for the first time. Until Lions Arch we get 24 hours then a reset not like other dungeons that can repeated once per day.

To summarise, no resets til LA if ever.

The only problem I forsee is that we can max of 5 pets because we can only get 5 “plans” I suppose. So never the special pet unless we get more minis from drops/boxes which does happen. Just makes that special one into super-rare so we don’t all have one.
