Would be helpful if you linked the build you’re using. I’m going to take a guess that the one you’re referring to is a rifle spec with 30 in firearms, 30 in tools, and then 10 wherever you like?
I think the problem with this type of build, like many glass cannon builds for other classes, is we lose too much survivability in comparison to how much damage we gain.
In my humble opinion the best quick-fix for the whole problem would be to introduce single/duo queue free tournaments (or just single games) with a strong matchmaking mechanic.

Great post and this part is a great idea. Simple, quick solution while they iron out a good ladder system. This way, queues will still be somewhat quick since many many people queue solo or with 1 other friend, and you won’t have to get throat punched in Khylo anymore!
You can already do this.

i strongly believe we do not need hot-join format at all. We just need two ladders and two tournaments format. There is enough premades outhere.. but they just are matched against wrong enemies..
I notice in several threads you suggest hotjoin be removed. I am strongly against this. Turn it to 5v5 yes so it gives a more accurate picture of what tournament pvp is like, but don’t remove it.
Currently when I learn a new class or am practicing solo, I will start in hotjoin and once i’ve got used to what spells do etc, I’ll pug in free tournaments to practice further.
Despite 8v8 spoiling hotjoin (for me that is, i’m sure there are people that like it, I don’t), one massive advantage hotjoin has for learning and practicing is the removal of waiting times between matches.
Free tournament pugging – Small wait to get in tournament, then x minute wait to actually start the tournament. Then you either win and wait some more, or you lose and start the process again. Now, I just want to practice my class in a 5v5 setting, I don’t want to spend 10-20 mins out of each hour of my time waiting to play.
Hotjoin – No waiting, instant join & play, when the games over, within a minute the next ones started. Make it 5v5 and that’s the place I think a lot of people will go to practice and get ready to play in tournaments.
Yes, you have valid points. But if hot-join will be 5v5 and free tournaments without guild premades (because guild premades should be playing paid or higher level)

One of the main reasons no mmo will ever have the same success as WoW did, in my opinion, are posts like this. Communities are so impatient now, threatening to leave, exaggerating Issues. I’ve seen this trend for awhile now, we set up games for failure without giving them time to develop and succeed.
This ppatch isn’t make or break for me, because this has been one of the smoothest and well balanced(regarding PvP) launches for an mmo I know of.
Trouble is, this game was released “when it’s ready”. So why the hell are all these bugs in the game at release in the first place, and why oh why haven’t they been fixed 2.5 months into release?

It’s not like there’s 1 or 2 little bugs here for each class, there’s TONS of them for everyone, and I really hope they are going to make a real effort into correcting a lot of them for the next patch.
I may be viewed as short-sighted for this, but I am putting a large amount of weight on this balance patch. I have high hopes for certain things (that I won’t discuss here because I don’t want this to get derailed). If they do not come or if little to no buffing/nerfing/fixing happens, then I may forever lose faith. If little to none of these changes happen while another PvE event change goes in, I may just be forever jaded.
Just curious if I’m the only one putting this much weight on one patch.
I expect to see more pve content, fixes to pve bugs which are affecting their profits, maybe a few profession bug fixes (of course at the expense of other even worse bugs being created inadvertently), and absolutely NOTHING to enhance the current pvp system or format.

Hahaha you serious? As an engineer, the only stun break I’m taking is Elixir R, why?
Breaks stun, refills endurance, nice!
Toolbelt skill, removes condition each pulse or rezzes me when I’m downed if I time things right, REALLY NICE. Oh, and let’s not forget that I can also throw it down on one of my downed teammates if he’s in range and rez him from afar.
I would take a guess that every engineer in decent teams has elixir r in one of their utility slots.

No riddle there, both are priorities because they (potentially) generate income. Personally I’d like to see EVERY profession / trait bug fixed before anything else is worked on.

I don’t think it should be allowed, as I actually do feel like this creates class imbalance. For instance, as an Engineer, there is no weapon set that offers me a speed boost without speccing into it or using a CD. As an Engineer, you can swap in a staff out of combat, get a short series of sprint bursts to move across the map, then swap back to mace/shield and hammer and still be just as tanky, even though you just breezed across the board like a roamer class."

Nonsense. I was in tpvp running a condition build with my engineer, 17k hp, just under 1700 toughness. I was one shotted twice in the same game by backstab, first one was just over 17k, 2nd just under 19k.
I asked the guy about it during the match, and he explained it was just a “ kitten build” he was messing around with, and that if messed up the set up and execution of it, he’s a sitting duck.

Tip, flamethrower has 2 useful skills in pvp, the 3 & 5, for blowback & blinding respectively. They give you survivability if used correctly.

How can this statement be taken seriously when the game was released with so many trait bugs for EVERY profession along with tons of other bugs as well?

No worse than stomping whilst under exilir s or any other immunity spell, or stomping under stability, and marginally worse than stomping whilst stealthed.

It feels like at the moment their priority seems to be based more around maximizing profit from PVE-ers rather than doing their best to make the game an esport.

Yes, please let us know what your plans are with the PVP in this game arenanet, and please oh please fix the ridiculous lag that has been plaguing european players since sunday. 3-5 sec lag spikes in a game this fast paced is ridiculous.
Slowly but surely, people are quitting with the intention of coming back “when they fix bugs and add a reason to pvp”. It’s becoming harder and harder to find people to tpvp with regularly, and it’s pretty disheartening when you do get a decent group of players, only to find out a couple of them have quit because they’re bored and you have find people all over again.

Yet again we have absolutely terrible lag in TPVP, it is not one person it is all players on both teams getting 3-5 second spikes, thus making the majority of the games unplayable.
The players on our team are from different regions / countries so it’s unlikely that it’s related to our ISPS, please look into this as a priority and get this fixed. It’s been like this for 2 days now.

Bump. On Desolation server, horrific lag in spvp / tpvp. Spikes, people teleporting, and just generally unplayable. And also on one of the few days where we actually have a full team who want to play for the afternoon.

That’s the point though, you’d get to play the better teams in the final round on a different map, rather than always in the Battle of Kyhlo.

Let everyone use their SPVP gear in WvW, and you’d probably see a big increase in participation.
Just an idea, but I reckon free tournaments would be a little more interesting if the map order was random instead of the same each game?
Having Battle of Kyhlo first sometimes would be great and would give people starting out a bit more of a chance to play 5v5 on this map and learn about the tactics?
Wouldn’ kitten be a little more interesting if occasionally the final was in Forest of Niflhel or Legacy of the Foefire?

It’s not so much the array of knockbacks and skills to keep you out of a point that guardians have, it’s the fact that they can also give themselves stability to occasionally negate other classes knockbacks that make them so effective at point holding.
However I DON’T think they need to be nerfed, what we need is more maps and styles of game in GW2 where point capture isn’t the main objective. Also, if you nerfed guardian’s defensive orientated specs, I really think that then they’d become a class that not many people would want in their tourney roster.
Although I would say sometimes I feel that their spirit weapons chase me half away across a map…but that’s probably just me exaggerating!
Having started pvping about 2 weeks ago, I am now starting to get a little bored of it. A bit of this might be due to burnout as I’ve played a lot, and also the fact that after finding a good team to play with, a few of the members have got bored also and no longer come online much, and I can now feel myself reaching that point too. In all honestly, there’s very little point to pvp-ing without some sort of ladder system in tournaments. The current rank is meaningless as all it proves is you’ve got more time than other people (vanilla wow high warlord anyone?).
I do still like the pvp a lot, and find the good games enjoyable, but without some sort of matchmaking system, and with map exploits being used by dubious characters (jump at the start so you can miss being teleported to the starting waypoint?) it is becoming a bit stale & tedious now. This combined with some opponents just being idiots and rubbing your nose in it when you lose, or just cussing you off when you win, is really starting to put me off the game.
The fact that there are still so many profession bugs and connection issues after a month is also a little bit annoying, and having had our whole team dc in the middle of the final map today is VERY annoying (somehow we still won that game but still…), and then later to have one member get kicked out half way through a final game that we were winning is also very annoying, especially when at the end the opposing team had the cheek to call us “scrubs” in map chat when we played the 2nd half of the game with 4, and only lost by 50 points.
Like many have said already, no decent premade wants to rollover some random pug anymore, it really isn’t fun at all.
One change you could make to improve the current free tournament system would be to make it for pre-made groups only, and change 8v8 zergfest into 5v5 so people who want to test out builds etc can use that instead of just going into free tourneys to test, not caring about winning or losing.
Also, split all the glory at the end of a tournament round evenly between all team members, the current system is stupid, it’s a team game, when we win or lose we do it together, one should not be rewarded more just because he’s playing the roamer in the team.
Apologies if this has already been mentioned in another thread, i couldn’t find it so starting a new one.
A while ago I had an occasional bug where in spvp or tpvp, I would lose the ability to move my character. Skills would work but i simply could not move my character at all. This stopped happening and I assumed it had been fixed but last night it happened in tpvp, once to the guardian in our team who was stuck unable to move at the clocktower, and once to myself at the start of a game (during the 5 minutes countdown).
I couldn’t move for about 2 minutes, and the only thing that fixed it was the game starting and teleporting me back to the start point. I believe our guardian got killed by a trebuchet shot as his way out of it.
I want to stress, there were no conditions on me when it happened (I also threw down elixirs (cleaning formula 409) to see if that would allow me to move, and used stun breaks, neither of which allowed me to move. Also, I dropped bombs too incase it was a binding root that I couldn’t see.
Please bump this thread if you have experienced this rather annoying bug, luckily it didn’t prevent us from winning our games when it happened, but if it happened in a closer game or at a really bad time it could, so this really needs to be investigated asap.

This is the best idea, although I think equal points distribution should be for tournaments only.
Defending a point and calling for backup when you think you might lose it is an often used strategy. If the point you’re defending gets attacked frequently, you’ll end up with a decent amount of glory, if it isn’t, you can sometimes end up with less than 50, while other team members have 250+. Splitting the overall glory in tournaments between team members equally is the fairest way to deal with this problem.
I’m also with sky broadband, so maybe it’s connected. Anyone else posted here also using sky? I want to clarify though, my internet still works fine when I get dc-ed, i know this as i ran a download in the background, and after getting kicked to character select it was still running.
i’m having the same problem. Had it this morning (uk time) at around 10-11am, left my group i formed for arah because of it. Then fine from 1pm – 8pm, and now i’m getting kicked out of pvp every 5-10 minutes and sent to the character select screen. Particularly annoying as you end up in mists when you relog, rather than back in the game you were in, thus missing out glory points you’d get at the end.
Great job Minilys, I’ve just started trying out different traits, and made a list to post here, but you got them all down already. Nice one!
