People Think Norn's Size Makes Them a Bad Choice

in Norn

Posted by: Turukano.3106

Turukano.3106

Max sized Norn in full shiny red armour wearing a humongous hammer.

This character has so much visual leadership in WvW.
When our server needs to push I charge in headfirst swinging my Hammer, motivating my teammates to charge along and scaring the enemy away.
Who are you more likely to follow in a charge? A tiny fireball shooting asura or a Huge Hammer Swinging Norn?
Who are you more likely to run away from when being attacked? A tiny asure shooting fireballs at you from range or a Huge Norn stomping you with a Hammer in your face?

The OP is wrong about hiding. It’s way easier to hide with an Asura, floaty names aside.
It’s way easier to spot a huge character in the distance than a small one, especially a distances where floaty names are not up yet.
The hitboxes might be the same, but the “clickboxes” aren’t. Big characters are easier to target.

The OP asks why there is so much misinformation. Ironic to me.

Didn’t like the theme very much. But that isn’t really Anet’s fault.
They really put good work into it and there was A LOT to do. But most of those things were meh. I tried doing the MK dungeon the first night it was out. Due to lag we never managed to get into the same instance as a group. So we decided to solo it. Another guy and me (both Guardians) managed to get quite far alone. It’s basically a large health-pools you needed to take down. The adds/special abilities were too weak to kill one players. It was all good fun till I was at 40% of MK health and my friend at 5% and the game decided to crash, so we lost our hour worth of progress. Never bothered to return later with the help of a group if it’s just a plain: Don’t be stupid and attack this large healthpool.

Clocktower would’ve been great fun if I had finished it. At some point I didn’t really make any progress anymore and I stopped bothering.

Intelligently Designed Realm Ranking System for WvW

I wish to express my support to Chessrook, Papyrus and Yerffej.

Furthermore, I want to note that I do not like Siege’s way of discussing at all. I think your way of reasoning is quite rude. I believe your posts are detrimental to the cause of the OP. Below an example of a, in my opinion, rude post.

Your entire post is flawed WvW is about killing other players. Without the players it would be PvE. Taking objectives without killing people is pointless.
You sir apparently fail to understand what true WvW is all about.

I admire forthegz’ fanatical way of defending his idea, though I disagree with the idea itself.

Posted by: Turukano.3106

Turukano.3106

How can they drain supply? Where did they put it in? Repairing walls is not a crime, while it might not be very wise to do at that time. You won’t be able to report them for that.

Maybe, if they build up a couple of siege rams next to the supply depot for no reason, you’ll have success reporting.

How you’d report them? No idea.

Mesmer Portal Cap

in WvW

Posted by: Turukano.3106

Turukano.3106

I think the portal is a very nice skill. It requires quite a bit of coordination, but the result can be epic.

Last night we were fighting (about 40 vs 40) on the bridge to the south of the Eastern Keep on Borderlands. We owned the bridge at that time, but we were going up and down all the time. Mesmer put down a portal at the far end of the bridge. Inevitably we got pushed back to our side of the bridge. Mesmer put down entrance of portal on our side. Our guild portalled through, while the other guild hold their ground. We completely blew up two of their guilds.
Later on when we got through the inner gate for the second time (defending guild build up sieges in Lord Room), another guild managed to get a mesmer portal in and we got 40-50 people in there and blew them up. There was no other way to get in there. Mesmer portals are needed to counter such choke points.

We also use multiple Mesmers to maintain our Golem(s) healthy, since they’re very slow. When we grab a tower or keep we know to look for hiding Mesmers.

This ability is powerful, but since both sides can do it I have no problems with it and think it should stay as it is.

Eliteseraph, I understand your desire of a 1200 weapon. But you can’t have everything.
I play a Guardian and we have a couple low DPS skills (all skills are low DPS actually) for 1200m. I’d happily swap with your Shortbow. Every class has it’s ups and downs, I suggest you try an other class and see what state they’re in. You’ll be happy with your thief.

What I hear of Cluster Bomb makes it sound pretty good. You can spam it at the sides of the wall to hit loads on top. As Guardian I do that too, but with a far weaker AOE attack.

Dolyaks and Lord

in WvW

Posted by: Turukano.3106

Turukano.3106

Why one should care about map domination? He gets nothing from this.

You don’t get anything from map domination? Where have you been?

Press B, check that panel, it shows a lot of buffs to your side.
Having orbs → being stronger → more badges of honour
Getting to map domination will let you cap a lot of towers/keeps which all give plenty of exp, karma and coin.

Also back to the dolyaks and the supply.
More supply is more siege weapons. More siege weapons is more ‘win ’n loot’. Using supply to repair walls or gates allows you to fire those siege weapons longer. More win ’n loot. Building upgrades at towers or keeps will give you stronger walls/gates and give you more time to use your siege weapons. More win ’n loot. Or it will give you siege weapons. More win ’n loot.

Supply is important.
Dolyak is supply
Dolyak is important.

What is the point of Guardian in WvW?

in Guardian

Posted by: Turukano.3106

Turukano.3106

Some notes for Guardian (in WvWvW):

- Pulling people of walls with Greatsword pull (not as good as Scorpion Wire, but still possible).
- Reflecting insane amount of damge by putting Wall of Reflection in front of a sieged gate.
- Covering a retreat with numerous skills.
- Spamming healing (either mace or staff) with a friend Guardian at the gate, making sure everyone survives quite a bit longer.
- Being sturdy and thus being able to survive sticky situations, like rezzing a friend in need or doing a risky tactical charge (fearing foes, motivating friends).
- The staff. Is great. Huge area of effect, doesn’t require a target or LoS. In very laggy fights I use the Staff as observation device. Sometimes enemy players do not appear to you even if you’re right in front of them. Using your Staff auto-attack will reveal damage values for each person in front of you. Even if you don’t see the target, you do see the damage. Great way to know how many people there are in front of you.

Supporting, like critics said, something you can do non-stop. There’s some cooldowns. But I personally like that a lot, it gives me the time to observe the battle, to coordinate with my friends, to keep an eye on the situation. (People with siege-weapon duty tend to have a narrow-view.)

To those that say Guardians are only good fun when you get a siege-weapon in your hands. I like operating a siege-weapon, but normally I try leaving that to someone else. Tactically placing a Wall of Reflection every 24 seconds (trait it!) does way more than some guy pewpewing from a wall.

And on rewards: I let guildies with DPS classes pay for the siege-weapons. And I’m not to keen on rewards, I’ll get them eventually and that’s good enough for me.

Oh and shedim, it’s true that Guardians are not strong at range or in inflicting damage. But, to me, that means you rolled the wrong class. It looks like you try to convince people to hate the Guardian, like you are trying to deny their enjoyment, because you can’t get it.

Oh and really the last note.
Well said, kousei, every single post (in this thread).

Level Adjustment Seems UP

I imagine it would be possible to legally exploit the level adjustment.
Gather the very best gear for a certain level and go to WvW. You’ll be leveled up to 80 including your stats. Your level gear might be actually better than the very best level 80 gear (after the level adjustment).
One problem though, you’ll outlevel it in an hour and your stats will drop again.

WvW Population Control Idea

in WvW

Posted by: Turukano.3106

Turukano.3106

I like the idea. I want to suggest an idea I read on this forum earlier.

I’ll use your example of servers A, B and C.
C has 50 people, B has 100. A is allowed to have 50 + 100 = 150 players.
This allows servers A and B to both have 300 (or max) players active when C has very few.
The limit of a given server is the total of players in a specific* WvW-zone not belonging to said server. Limit for server A = Players from B + Players from C

*This might lead to queues on Borderlands and no queues on Eternal while it actually has more players. Seems a bit of a flaw to me.

This system makes sure there are always enough players to counter one server. Meaning not one of the servers will control everything. There’ll always be at least an equal amount of enemies. Pretty much all the time the limits will be the same as they are nowadays, you can expect that both the opposing sides have at least half the amount of max players during the day. This would only affect night-zerging.
This way the limits will easier go up and the lowest pop server will easier get outnumbered. But they’ll always have a chance to pick some towers while the other two servers are fighting each other.
There’d have to be a minimum limit of, say, 20 to 50 players to prevent emptiness.

The issue you mention that the limit can drop under the actual amount of players from a server (when players form the other servers leave).
Just keep it that way, people leave and join WvW all the time. They’ll have an advantage for a short while. None should ever be booted, because of limits.

WvW Guardian Ideas

in Guardian

Posted by: Turukano.3106

Turukano.3106

Personally I think Guardians are the most invaluable class in WvW.
I don’t care about rewards, I care about winning, about taking a keep or succesfully defending one. Mostly I play with my guild. We never put Guardians on siege-weapons, they’re too strong to be missed.

Wall of Reflection is extremely powerful. Someone else explained how you can block of choke points or bridges combining WoR with the Staff Wall. WoR is also great in defending siege-weapons or dolyaks from ranged fire.

But absolutely most important is defending a gate.
1) Pop Stability
2) Jump down from above your gate right into mayhem.
3) Pop your wall in front of the gate
4) Profit
5) If needed pop your heal that blocks during the cast and use the portal door back into your tower/keep.
6) Profit
7) $$$$$$$$$
8) Get two other Guardian friends so you have the gate non-stop defended against projectiles.
9) MORE PROFIT $$$$$$$$$$$$

The Staff
- 1. Great auto-attack. In zergy/laggy fights I use it as sonar. Foes tend not to load yet so I have no idea how many there are. I just spam my staff and will see damage numbers pop up for every foe. Great way to find out how many enemies there are.
Also the number one skill does decent damage and easily lets you tag a lot of people. Besides you don’t have to target anything, don’t require line of sight and pretty good range. It’s the best no-brain skill which gives you plenty of time thinking about your positioning, tactics and all that kind of stuff.

- 2. Crappy. Combine it with number four on your friends when they are headbutting a gate. The healing helps a lot, esp if you have more Guardians doing it.

- 3. Best swiftness ability of Guardian. Spam it! Movement is everything.

- 4. See 2. Oh and Might makes me right!

- 5. Invaluable. Keep people out of their tower. Secure a retreat. Split up foes in a choke point. Chain it with other Guardians for more profit.

I know that Guardians aren’t that interesting to solo with. They don’t do a lot of damage. They’re crap at range. But if that’s what you want, you shouldn’t have rolled the Guardian in the first place. I rolled the Guardian to play with my guildmates. To use Shield of Absorption to rescue Downed players. To be tough and able to survive in hard situations. To be able to effect the flow of battles by placing walls at the right moment at the right place. To be able to save friends from the brink.

I build for Toughness. I’m a max-sized Norn in shiny armour. Meant to psychologically influence the flow of battle, by fearing my opponents with the sight of a charging Norn and encouraging my allies to join me. Gotta time it right though.

So far I totally like it.

I use the Scepter. It isn’t that good, but it’s ranged. All the skills are useful too, but do little damage. (Doh, you’re a guardian) Tbh the Scepter of the Mesmer is in a lot worse state.

Piken Square roleplayers in WvW

in WvW

Posted by: Turukano.3106

Turukano.3106

I’ve never seen RPers yet in WvW on Piken Square.

There’s something that I have seen multiple times though, that’s a lot worse than five people roleplaying instead of fighting for the server. Like fifty people instead of five taking up precious slots. I’m sure most of you have heard of this event. It’s commonly known as The Grub.

If you’re server is on the south eastern side (aka the Grub side), you’re gonna have a bad time. When the grub spawns you’re going to lose two towers and two supply camps on average.

If roleplayers were to get banned for griefing/not-fighting, please ban all players who kill the grub. That might rid us of those queues as well.

Upgrades are not the way to defend your keep.

Build siege-weapons all around it. Catas behind the gate like Draygo explained. Point some Ballistae at choke-points. Put Arrow-Carts on the walls out of line of sight (you dont need that). Heck even build a Trebuchet to counter Trebuchets build to attack your tower. Make sure you have enough people to man the equipment and you win. Only a prolonged siege from an organized group will be able to defeat you if they use a lot of siege weapons to counter yours.

If you give up after losing once, WvW is not for you.

We get it, queue times are too long

in WvW

Posted by: Turukano.3106

Turukano.3106

Our guild did the same. We moved from Far Shiverpeaks (full to almost full server) to Piken Square (medium-sized server). From heavy queues to hardly any queues. We only mobilize 10 to 20 people normally, but this still gave huge issues with queues on Far Shiverpeaks. Transferring to Piken Square was indeed a very good move.

Transferring your guild isn’t as easy as described above. It’s still easy, but there’s a couple downsides.
Firstly and most importantly, Influence (the Guild currency) is server-specific. If you transfer, you’ll lose all of it. The game only just started so you won’t have that much, but it’s something to consider.
Secondly and possibly not so much of a point anymore, is the bugginess of transferring. Some of our guildmembers could transfer within 30 seconds. Others could not for a full day. This was about a week ago, thus might be fixed already.

If you want to do any serious WvW with your guild I suggest transferring to a medium-sized or small-sized server.

Oh and like Grimaldi said, free tansfers end soon.

There’s already a limit to siege-weapon stacking. I believe you can’t place more than 4 or 5 siege-weapons in a radius of about 1000.

Siege Golems are extremely effective at taking down gates. They’re also extremely expensive. And you can leave them behind and grab them back later, someone can mount it and run off. I doubt they’re going to be a problem.

If you want to take a keep down fast, you’ll have to invest. I don’t see the problem.

More spawn points is bad. Also allowing people to teleport around the map is also unnatural and prevents scouting tactics.

Are arrow carts kind of overpowered?

in WvW

Posted by: Turukano.3106

Turukano.3106

I personally like how every siege-weapon excells in it’s own thing.
Arrow Carts are easy to build, don’t do much damage and don’t require line of sight.
Ballistae are harder to use (require a target, line of sight etc), but potentially do the most DPS of any siege weapon, especially on choke-points.

The only problem I can see with Arrow Carts is not their strength but their cheapness. Again this is WAI as someone else said, to counter zergs.
Siege-weapons in general are a good way to counter zergs.

in WvW

Turukano.3106

1) On most servers there’s hardly any queues. Try transfering to a low or medium sized server. Giving priority to higher levels doesn’t make any sense. Level is not equivalent to skill. Even if it was, it still wouldn’t make any sense.

2) Agreed. If your server is on the Grub-side, you’re gonna have a bad time. Vistas are fine, you only complete them once. PvE events (like the grub) are bad and should be removed.

3) Again that doesn’t make any sense. More often than not a loud person in team or map chat makes more sense than no person at all.
A system to distinguish those who’ve spent a lot of time in WvW? Seriously? Time spent is not equivalent to skill. Even the biggest idiots can finish a thousand events.

4) I agree that buying such a thing with in-game money (which is exchangable with real-life money) is quite weird. But I don’t really know how else you should be able to get it. Maybe by having 50 or 100 people sign for you, that way only the people who have support in the community can take up such an important role.
It’s a really bad idea to link some achievemnt (= time spent) to getting the Commander’s Compendium, that’s basically the same as gold (= time spent or money paid).

WvWvW is indeed about organisation, it’s indeed about Guilds in a realm leading, it’s indeed not about PvE.
Let me tell you about my guild. We’re collecting money to buy our leader a Compendium. When I (or guild-mates) feel like it we use team or map chat to lead/advise zergs.

The chaos you describe is not caused by any of the points you mention. It’s mainly caused by the lack of mass communication. The game causes this by only allowing five-man groups. And the other cause will settle down when we go further in time, when Commanders will appear to lead a server.

I’m against more and easier accessible waypoints. If we really need improved mobility in WvW (honestly, we really don’t) I’d suggest a 5 min speed boost aquired at your server’s spawn point (like they have in the main cities). This will allow you to return to the fight quicker after dying. But it won’t increase our mobility much during the action.
