All that was said above + the fact that guardian is already on the lower end of the sustained damage spread.
Losing much more would keep guardians out of raids due to the fact so many other can support just as well if not better while doing better damage.
That is… disheartening. I’ve noticed that. I’m hoping that arena net actually sees the disparity going on with some of their classes and plans to do something about it. I feel like for a long time they’ve had this image of Guardian that doesn’t really hold true (like their excuses for limiting their mobility options as an example). I know that Warriors feel like they’re in a bad place (although primarily in terms of PvP), and Thieves are having their own low point right now. It’s a shame that I don’t do better with more complex classes that happen to be doing better right now.
I made one initially just because of my interest in the DH concept. The core guardian wasn’t really all that interesting to me. Once I started playing DH and comparing it to the other classes I’d played, it just seemed like a natural fit. It doesn’t make me feel like I have to be a Korean Starcraft player to be passable with it. I dislike the low HP pool and lack of core mobility (without taking a staff everywhere and sacrificing utility slots), but it’s the only class I feel even remotely competent with at present.. err, of course that’s not saying much. I still feel like I’m being pulled in all directions when I go looking for helpful advice/information.
I appreciate the feedback. I don’t participate in raids, so that wasn’t a concern of mine, but I do occasionally have trouble in a fractal or two. One example I can think of concerns the opening fight in the cliffside fractal. For whatever reason if that fellow decides to focus me, there’s really little I can do to survive his onslaught long enough for cooldowns to come back up. Perhaps I’ll simply need to adjust which skills I’m bringing so that I can prolong my life there. Typically I only have shield of courage, shelter, and retreat as my life savers. I’ll just have to start being mindful that I may need one more or to change retreat for something w/ a longer uptime.
Thus far there’s a surprising lack of opinion and/or input on the subject. I suppose most ares till doing the zerker thing.
Are any of you using these stats? I’ve been using the berserker stats for the most part, and I have just a bit of toughness for those places where it’s needed, but do any of you find a little vitality mixed in to be of benefit to you? I feel like it provides a little more margin for error (be it either because of lag, accidents, kitten moments, not anticipating something correctly, etc), but I’m not totally convinced on the investment yet.
I have to amend my VB statement. I just got out of an organized run that went perfectly. That made me feel good.
Yeah, can’t say I can ever catch a taxi to an organized VB. I only ever see DS. Never a taxi for AB either, just a hit or miss.
I was having a discussion with a friend last night about some of the issues I was seeing in the HoT areas. There doesn’t appear to be much issue with the Dragons Stand meta between taxi parties and the tendency of players to flock to the most loot for their time spent, but the rest seem to struggle.
No matter how much time I spend in Verdant Brink, there never seem to be enough players to get around to killing the Axemaster. In fact things seem to waffle between killing just the one boss or two during the evening.
The tangled depths Meta seems to rarely have participants, or if it completes, I arrive after it’s already occurred.
Auric Basin is sort of a 50/50 in my experience. Sometimes I find a zone full of players (though players still cant seem to down the legendary Vinetooth -not enough CC is the reason I hear being cited), and other times it’ll appear to be empty.
Is this just a case of spreading the population too thin across content, or is something funky with the algorithm that generates and places players in maps? Perhaps it’s also a case of needing to tune some of these events for fewer players. I mean, look at Triple Trouble. It was obviously made at a time when it would have no shortage of players willing to do it, but now getting players to organize for it seems like asking the impossible. In a few years time they may be releasing yet another expansion, and where will the current content be then? I can only imagine the HoT maps will become ghost towns.
I’m of the same mind to wait. I’ve only gotten the glider to deploy twice in a few hours of trying. Just walking into the air updraft is enough to launch me a couple of times, but after that pressing space fails to deploy the glider, and the updrafts just cease to function after another attempt. Moments later I’m dead and full or rage, as of course at this point I’ve tried so many times that my character is starting to look like they’ve just been through a round of strip poker. Come on ArenaNet, get your crap together. ><
I just spent a few hours trying to complete it and my main issue was that in only 2 instances was my glider able to deploy during the air phase. Sometimes I wouldn’t even be launched in the air. I’d fall only to run back into one of the air launchers (w/e you’d like to call them) only to eat dirt moments later because it didn’t lift me. There’s also the lovely issue of the arena not resetting properly after the boss destroys a part of the floor. At that point you have no choice but to start all over again because the rift is now in mid air. I wouldn’t mind a legitimately difficult fight, but being unable to complete the story due to bugs is kittening me off.
I’ve only managed to do one story step inside it, and now getting to the second one, I’m well and truly lost. Saying I dislike this map would be putting it mildly. I LOATHE this map. I always felt I had a good sense of direction, but this map makes me feel directionally challenged. No matter how hard I try I just seem to go in circles and revisit places I’ve already been to. Pardon me while I go tear my hair out…
Any time I attempt to start it, the target dummies don’t appear. I thought perhaps I was just missing something, but I’ve watched videos. The other players around me appear to be able to see them, but nothing I’ve done (including toggling graphics on a hunch) has made a difference.
I have a thread about HoT content so perhaps I could have shoved this somewhere in that one, but I felt it should probably have its own. That being said, I was looking for input/advice & your experiences playing Guardian in Fractals.
So far I’ve been to 25 using the typical Zerker meta (GS/Bow), but I don’t know that it’s the best choice going forward. I’d heard somewhere on these forums that the hammer was looked upon favorably, though perhaps more so in an organized group over a pug (something about pulling critters around walls), so I invested in a Hammer not too long ago. I even played around with Mace/Torch. The one thing I found about carrying those into anything though was that I missed being able to keep my distance. Of course this really just comes down to the zerker issue I imagine.
Unfortunately all I see or hear about is the dps meta, and in each case folks are just running to maximize that dps potential. I can understand why it rose to prominence. Active defense/dodging or what have you was all you really needed. Of course now with new content I feel like we’re being nudged away from that. Anyhow, once again I’m just hoping to hear your experiences and what you feel has worked best for you and your group.
I’ve only recently begun dipping into the HoT zones and associated content. I was wondering what methods others have used to succeed in those areas?
Up until now I ran with GS/Bow in primarily zerker gear (which a smattering of other stats in trinkets/rings etc – whatever I could get my hands on really). For anything I’ve done up to this point it didn’t create problems for me, but some of these new critters can tear off a third or more of my health swiftly, and getting close no longer seems to be an option, forcing me to keep to the bow.
Of course I’m aware I could just sink time or money into something like PTV set, but I didn’t want to make an investment until I was sure what sorts of gear/builds players were having the most success with.
Another concern is that if I start sinking into toughness, then I may create other problems for myself, like unintentionally becoming an aggro magnet.
I was fortunate to have a mentor of sorts early on, but since they are not always available, it was up to me to take the initiative and press on. I’m presently at Fractal 21, and so far I’ve seen no shortage of players whose inclination is to complain about the slightest mistake or hold up. I’ve only been on the receiving end of this once or twice, but I’ve watched it aimed be aimed at others too.
Having spent no shortage of time in a game like FF14:ARR, I’m no stranger to a community that loathes its new players, so I suppose this isn’t unexpected. Hell, I was even one of those people. The thing is, dungeons in FF14 were a horrid slog if you had new players. The low dps turned what could be 10 minutes of your life into the next 30+ minutes instead, and since you’d run the content hundreds of times before, you didn’t want to be there any longer than necessary.
Perhaps this is the same issue happening here, but with these low end fractals it would take very little effort to help players avoid problem areas and mistakes. Thankfully most of the fractals are fairly self explanatory, or become a no brainer after having done it once before. Only a few are less forgiving. That being said, suddenly going over into 21 I’m seeing a whole new level of elitism. The only major change is the agony, and I’ve got that covered thanks to a heads up from my mentor.
I guess I’m just wondering if some of you out there have had similar experiences and if so, how did you cope with it going forward? For the moment my only ambition is reaching 25, but I don’t know what the future holds.
I hadn’t been crashing up until this patch, so I don’t know if my issue and this one are related, but I’m downloading the 64 bit client to give it a go. If it doesn’t change anything I’ll be sure to mention it.
My crashes aren’t constant like yours, but they do happen at inconvenient times. Several times today I crashed either in the middle of world boss events or at the very end, resulting in the loss of full credit, or losing the loot entirely. Once again, this issue is entirely new for me with the 11/17 patch. Prior to that I had no problem.
Yeah, big time. It happens to me no matter where I am or what I’m doing. Just got to the end of Ulgoth event and hit with the error. I can generally leave the error message alone for a minute, maybe less, but it will inevitably freeze, forcing me to accept the crash. As soon as Ulgoth died… freeze. It’s frustrating trying to do events without crashing and losing credit/ loot chests.
This just started happening to me today after downloading the patch. It occurs frequently, and there doesn’t appear to be any pattern. I can be doing literally anything and get hit by it.
Alright, thanks. That’s what I was leaning toward, given how difficult it seems to be to get that prefix on anything. I’ll just keep a separate bow around for berserkers stats since it’s easy enough just to make/buy/loot one.
I haven’t seen much talk about it outside of the thread discussing the 25% movement speed issue, and I had a question regarding it and the Dragonhunter’s Longbow. I can choose the prefix on it from between Berserker’s, Commander’s, and Rampager’s. From what little I can glean from the forums, Commander’s is a difficult prefix to acquire, so would it be worth it to set that as the prefix for the bow, so that in the future I’d have it available to me if I ever desired it, or is it safe to say I’ll never really want that and just stick with Berserker’s on it?
Prior to receiving at least half a dozen of you saying that clicking is a problem, I was already aware. I thought I had been clear on that, but perhaps not. For those of you who had more to offer than a broken record and condescension, you have my thanks. I appreciate the suggestions on how I might be able to approach my keybinding and plan to try them out. I’m so used to E being my legend swap, but I’ll see if I can get used to placing all that on the F keys.
I don’t PvP, but I feel like the suggestion Luclinraider gave could still be helpful in PvE. I’ll see how those work for me as well.
I appreciate the input. I’d rather not feel like I’m letting the classes potential go to waste, but at the same time perhaps it’s best if went with the less intense approach. I’d like it if Ventari and Malyx got some attention so that alternate play styles would open up. At present Ventari doesn’t seem to play nice with the other legends, since everything is tied into that tablet, and Malyx… I don’t think anything even needs to be said about that one seeing as how it’s probably been covered in great detail elsewhere.
To elaborate, I’ve read up on how to make the most of my dps between Shiro + Glint, and while I’ve been able to perform well enough on a training dummy, I can’t seem to make it work in practice.
Shiro is easy, but as soon as I move over to glint, I hate life. The flow of combat feels… interrupted when I’m busy clicking on 4 facets and F2. Perhaps keybinding might alleviate this, but otherwise it’s a drag. Heck, I wish I could just shift the F2 icon over next to the other facets, so that when I’m clicking it’s all in one place. I’m not an absolute stranger to keybinds, but I’m not great with it either. It took me a long time to get used to having my weapon swap and legend swap bound (I still goof up from time to time), and of course I also bound impossible odds to a key. (Q, E, C respectively). That’s about as far as my fingers want to go, and I have enough trouble keeping that straight.
Of course if that weren’t bad enough, now I’m watching either my energy and that F2 icon to make absolute certain that I have bottomed out on energy so that I can swap to Shiro and not get boned on transitioning to Impossible Odds. Sure, you can just click F2 again, but that messes up the entire cycle.
Up until I started trying to use glint, life felt simple. Sure, there was the occasional frustration against certain opponents, but I was rather fond of Shiro + Jalis. I just feel like I must be missing something, because I see all this talk of Glint making everything better. Perhaps someone here can help me see what it is I’m missing.
Thanks for the link. After watching all of those it helped fill in some gaps, but overall it seems like some things just had to be experienced. Even with what was in those videos, Taimi feels like she has the least grounding among this group of new characters since she gets added toward the end, and isn’t even present for the showdown with Scarlet. The fact that she shows up in the dead end bar isn’t something that’s entirely believable for me. The others, sure. They kept running into each other, and it’s clear that your character is meant to be the glue that binds them. It’s just like introducing one group of friends to another works out in real life. Sometimes they just click. Taimi had the least screen time, and just felt tacked on. That being said, she’s still very likable.
So, I’ve got to ask. Does Woodenpotatoes have a similar series on Season 2? I’ve only just gotten into the second episode of Season 2, and the way that they came to the conclusion that it’s Mordremoth felt botched. Just as Woodenpotatoes said in his S1 epilogue video, nobody has any reason to conclude it’s him, much less know his name. And yet, somehow your character just comes out at the start of episode 2 with this idea that it’s him, and the other characters just accept this notion, as if they too know the name. I’d like to hear any thought Woodenpotatoes has on the subject, because he seems like he’d pick up on how awkward that is as well.
Well, I do agree it feels like it would be natural, but the feeling I’m getting is that some conversation had to take place off screen where they agreed on being some sort of official group, with the player character leading.
As someone just now going through season 2, something I found disconcerting was that upon my arrival in Prosperity, it was already covered in mordremoth vines. It’s clear that said event isn’t supposed to happen until between episode 1 and 2 of season 2 (the point at which you get a letter from Braham about an attack on the town). From a few videos and the wiki it’s apparent that this wasn’t always the case, but hey, anet is a fan of this one time world change business. Perhaps with the addition of heart of thorns they just figured everyone had already seen that event in the story, so why not have it reflected permanently? Not a fan of that approach.
Even stranger, is that during a segment of S2 e1, you’re asked to talk to the NPC’s in prosperity, and it’s clear that the dialogue of the Charr in the bar was tinkered with to reflect the already boned state of the village/dead npcs. Is this a simple case of anet not being able to make up their mind? Both this and the issue the OP brought up are things I’ll just have to accept if I’m going to enjoy myself, but I can’t help feeling this was sloppy.
I was never around for Season 1 (or 2, though I later purchased it), but I did a lot of reading. After all that I still felt out of the loop… like I had missed some crucial event or information that explained how exactly these characters gelled into this group and I became “boss” to them.
I was not present for LW S1, but I’ve purchased the pieces of Season 2 I was missing, as well as HoT, but I’m feeling a little lost even after watching a few videos about the first seasons story. I have the general idea of what went on and in what order, so I’m not feeling lost on the big picture, but in terms of the characters that were introduced (I’ve heard someone call them Destiny’s Edge 2.0), I have questions that went unanswered by anything I read or watched.
1) At what point does the protagonist (your character) become “boss” to this group? It was my understanding that right up until the end of season 1, these characters had never worked in a complete group together, but rather were seen by themselves or with one other character at a time (Braham & Rox / Marjory & Kasmeer). Obviously I wasn’t there to see it, so I don’t know at what point they all met one another and their relation to one another really… gelled, shall we say.
Playing through Season 2 and not having seen that, I find it awkward to be referred to as Boss and not really know at one point the protagonist becomes this figure in their eyes. I could see if they were all working for the pact perhaps, but it was my understanding they aren’t directly affiliated with it. Perhaps someone can help me understand that point.
2) Kasmeer’s hiccups – I watched the cinematic from the end bit of season 1 and noticed that. I just assume that must be one of the details of her character that may or may not pop up again, but was that discussed/touched on in some dialogue before that point?
I’m fairly certain I’ll have more questions, but those are just the two I had on my mind right now, and I’ll probably add them to this post as I go. For the moment I’d be grateful if someone out there could fill me in.
