No, this would be valid had they decreased the damage after making stats effects kits, not well before such a change occurred. Doing it the way you’re insinuating is downright silly.
WRONG.
That’s not how real game-balance works for regular-update MMOs. I know because I play LoL, and they do this ALL THE TIME. And a few LoL designers worked very closely with ANet in the development of GW2.
Developers will put out what’s ready to be shipped.
This time, it was sigils and they needed to get the nerf out first. The stats come later.
That’s the way reality has unfolded, I’m sorry if you don’t like it.
No it’s not. They should have manned up. Said that it is ready and told us to wait while they get weapons stats to work as well. Having us suffer because they couldn’t fix this crap in BETA and it’s already been MONTHS is appalling. Doesn’t matter if it’s ready to be shipped; it’s sloppy and not only that their math is wrong. It’s a 35% nerf not 30%. We shouldn’t have to suffer 1 or more months because of this not when it hurts the player base this badly; especially hurting us in groups.
In the mean time I love my 1000+ crit with autoattack Ranger.
Auto-attack rifle engineer has had 1200-1400+ crit at 50-70% crit rate since before launch. And unlike your ranger, due to piercing, a single rifle shot can hit multiple foes. It’s posts like these that make me wonder if the people in this thread ever even tried a non-grenade build.
Have you seen the “rifle is poor damage”posts prior to patch? I was just sitting there scratching my head.
Engi rifle auto attack is like the #2 highest dps ability after grenades in the game..With traits, arrows can pierce. Maybe you should try lvling a Ranger. Mr. Bad.
Ok, so you spend a trait on something I get for free. Grats Mr. Bad.

I’m pretty sure the Engi Rifle shoots slower than the Ranger’s short bow, though. Against single targets, or targets who are spread out, the Ranger should win out, I think. Plus, the Ranger applies automatic bleeds when beside or behind their target with their short bow #1.
You also need to factor in pet damage on top of whatever the Ranger is dealing.
-Travail.
And you need to factor in the huge static discharge burst from a proper rifle build. The initial post compared autoattack to autoattack. Apples to apples. Throwing in other abillites is comparing apples to oranges. For a curve ball you could also throw in the extra control rifle has innately. More oranges, yay.
My point was, and still stands, that Rifle 1 has always been a top notch attack, if built for it. This doesn’t excuse the gutting of grenade builds, which were not overpowered in any way, and converting direct damage to condition damage does precisely that — guts grenades.
Its not the end of the engineer class as some have pointed out, but it is inexcusable and unnecessary to gut a damage build that didn’t even come close to the damage of other classes.
Nothing about me being bad because I have to work around how my class was made pal. You’re the baddie for insinuating that rangers don’t have the capability without doing research.
@Sporadicus Not many people go that route, or want to. Don’t use toolbelt regen as an example; it’s dumb. All it does is stack duration when you have other abilities giving you regen. Also, there is an annoying bug that causes you to receive only 5 healing a tick. So yea, it sucks.
Except, engineers still do good damage outside of the grenade kit. People have pointed out a few times that rifle, bomb, and heck even the flamethrower now that we have sigils (though targeting can be buggy) do good damage when built properly. The grenade kit still does solid damage now, just not so much as it used to, and still stacks vulnerability like a champ, improving everyone’s damage.
Are you serious? Is this a serious answer? Our damage is horrible for the amount of trouble it takes to make it work. Our damage was fine; it probably needed a buff; however, that’s what the sigils would have done. That would have been enough. We should not have been toned down at ALL until we scale with weapons because yea, that would have made us too OP. But you know what? That awesome damage doesn’t mean !#$ when you have moving targets with erratic movements. If you claim you can hit every single grenade on a moving target that moves like a madman, then you are full of !
#$. Even slight movements can cause us to miss because of the grenade air time.
So no, we were not fine. Flamethrower? Really? It’s buggy as hell. I love seeing misses, yet somehow even though I miss, my sigil procs? Explain that. Grenade was the only VIABLE dps outside BOMB kit; however, not many people like BOMB KIT. We are kitten that not only are we forced to dualwield because Area Net is too stupid to give 2H weapons TWO sigils, but we are forced to use BOMBS. However some of us will stick with the crappy damage of grenades because we enjoy the KIT itself.
I for one am astonished on how stupid Anet has been. Our survival has gone to crap. Elixir (while bugged) made the heal VIABLE. It’s hard to stay alive compared to other classes. Many classes such as Thief, and Ele (fire #1 splash) could, and DO more damage than grenades did and they had sigils to boot. I’ve seen a fire elementalist use #1 fire skill to do almost 3k on crit and it doesn’t miss like grenades and it’s an autoattack.
That’s why so many people are kitten Not only did it take Anet so long to fix something that should have been dealt with in BETA, but they continue to nerf our Grenades to the ground because people complain about its damage. And for the record, the only people who complain are the MORONS who stand still and let it hit them.
(edited by Wolfies.8152)
So what? First of all shrapnel getting a 9% buff to 15% does not make up for me losing 300 dmg per grenade. Conditions have a cap; lots of players use conditions; your reasoning is horribly faulty.
Anet has a horrible track record of half-!@#ing everything they do. Took months to get sigils to work; will take months for stats to work. If I recall correctly, sigils or stats (one of them) have been working in tpvp/spvp for a while. The fact that they didn’t make it work across the entire game is pathetic.
Our damage has always been inferior. Have you seen the damage of a Fire Elementalist with splash damage? They can reach the same amount if not higher; however, they can’t miss like we do. People who whine about grenades doing too much damage are the morons who just stand there and take it. Have you tried to hit a mob/person who uses erratic movements? It’s a pain in the !@#. We’re suppose to do more damage because that’s the trade off WE SUFFER from; to nerf our damage to the dirt and still not give #1 ability, grenade, an auto-attack similar to underwater grenades is beyond stupid.
So what if they are going to make us scale with weapon damage when they finally get there !@#ess in gear and give us the fix that should have been fixed in beta? How long are we going to suffer with mediocre damage? What’s worse is the Elixir Gun.
I got removed from a group before it even started because people said my Elixir Gun isn’t strong enough in healing anymore and they opted to get an Elementalist. Good going, Anet, your whole non-trinity is working great.
Edit: Oh! Almost forgot. Anet cannot do math properly either. It’s not a 30% hit, its a 35% hit; it hurts us like hell.
(edited by Wolfies.8152)
What do you expect? It’s been four months. After each patch, I expect less and less.
In the mean time I love my 1000+ crit with autoattack Ranger.

Yes but now you are forced to run a 5% damage Sigil to compensate for the fact that you can use Sigils.
What’s more, you’re forced to run two +5% damage sigils on a pistol/shield or pistol/pistol just to see the same results as before.
Using a rifle with grenades, even with the +5% damage sigil will see a 15% decrease in damage output, which eliminates the rifle as a viable mainhand weapon entirely for grenade dps specs (and possibly all of our dps specs, if Anet takes the same approach when balancing the rest of our kits.)
So giving us sigils now forced all grenade dps specs to use pistol/pistol, with two +5% damage bonus sigils (or maybe crit chance, if your group isn’t already stacking bleeds.) Here I thought this class specialized in versatility.
-Travail.
Two 5% sigils stack?
I noticed about 300 dmg lost per grenade; yes, its a big deal. The elixir “fix” hurts so much as well.
My tooltip damage fully buffed for “Grenade” went from 462 to 301. Very frustrating……..
That’s annoying. If that’s true, its a 35% decrease not 30%.
462-301 = 161
462*.35 = 161.7
SUPER SAD! Anet, your logic is beyond stupid. If there was no innercooldown on sigils such as flame aoe, then yes, I would see 30% being justified, but there is. This is such a nerf. Take back your crappy sigils and give us stats instead; BETTER YET, do both at the same time. The fact that this problem pre-existed beta and took this long into live to get only HALF FIXED is shocking.
BUMP! Please respond. This is actually a big issue.
Would love to see a clarification from a GM whether or not this is a bug and maybe whether or not the rings can be swapped for infused version.
Gotta hand it to you guys. This is one hell of an annoying bug. Not only did you decide to slow progression by making rings only from dailies, but to get the WRONG RING is far worse.
In this screenshot, you will see that this is a level 20 FoTM and that three people got the same ring, but ONLY ONE OF THEM was infused.
Now either you guys hate us enough to make infused even a chance to drop at 20+, or this is one hell of a bug that you can’t compensate. I will not hold my breath because the GMs in this game are utterly powerless to the point that they can’t even swap an item from one character to another.
Normally, I wouldn’t be upset; however, I struggle to find level twenty groups that can finish fast enough (1hour-2hour runs) or else I blue screen (been getting BSOD’S since your lovely Nov 10 patch).
Sorry for the rant.
It bugs me that they gave up instead of continuing to find this issue that plagues many people; instead of continuing the pass it off to you telling you its something on your end. With many people suffering, you would think that just MAYBE it’s their end.
’’Hello Ebon,
Thank you for getting back to us on this issue. Unfortunately, we’ve executed all possible troubleshooting steps for this issue and we’re unable to find anything that would explain why this is happening. At this time I will have to suggest that you seek out local computer support by speaking to a trained PC technician for further assistance.
If there is anything other issues we can assist with, please let me know.’’
From tech support..
Yep. Impossible to believe that it is their fault, and quit right away. Some tech support.
I’m having a different problem. I do not get disconnects or crashes; however, I do get blue screens and this started after the Lost Shores update. I used to get blue screens that said memory dump, now my game just freezes utterly and I have to turn off my computer by holding the power button.
I have done thing different before this all started, and since then I have updated my Nvidia GTX 570 to beta, updated my BIOS and all other drivers. I have passed a multiple memory tests AND I can play Skyrim at max setting just fine all day and no memory crash.
Since your patch, you created a memory LEAK somewhere in your code.
If I am wrong, please tell me how and I will try to fix it because I have tried everything!

I may be wrong, but I don’t think armor is accounted for when you have elemental attacks. Even if it did, at 33 my flame breath doesn’t do 284 a tick..nor does my burn/dot dmg from this ability pump out 1770 dmg in 3s. So it has to be a tooltip error.
:X
Drake breath also does 1539 burn dmg and 292 regular dmg. Seems very high for my level and doesn’t seem to do the damage that the tooltip says.
I’m thinking it might be a tooltip error but.. At level 31 in lvl 25 gear with power at 334, while I’m being lowered by the zone to lvl 29..my Arcane Power tooltip says it does 686 damage. Yet it is constantly critting for just about half that. No matter what mob I hit with it, its always about 330ish
Is it a tooltip bug that isn’t scaling right with my stats? Or is the utility spell bugged itself? Or am I missing something obvious?
HEY! Standing on top works for me too! Phew. Hurray for forums!!!
Quest: Through the Looking Glass 73
Before you fight the eye at the start there is a few sentences that the NPCs say. You can read what they are saying at the bottom of the screen like usual, but there are NO sound to these voices.
Everything else about the quest seems to work perfectly.
You are either a troll, or a kitten liar. I’m sorry. No way in hell any thief can 4 shot any class of equal level just by using Vital Shot which is our #1 Pistol skill. The fact that you have knights/valkyrie is even more obvious.
GO elsewhere.
I leveled up as glass cannon and kinda struggled once I stopped going D/P and went full D/D.
At 55, there is horrible gear choices, so I went full Knight (pwr/pre/tuff). It has made a tremendous difference. Fighting 3-4 risen thralls gives me as much trouble as 1 risen thrall used to. All my gear is Knight except armor and weapons which is only GEMMED (pre/crit%/pwr) in armor and wpns only.
What I worry is did I go overboard? Did I sacrifice too much damage?
I was also thinking for going for sigils, 5% dmg and 60% on crit to remove a condition.
Thoughts? For PvP and PvE? If it helps, I’m not condition and I plan on going, 0/30/0/20/20
Thank you for reading!
@OP thieves are pretty gear dependent. Buy full crafted greens off the Broker for your level and repeat as necessary. It’s worth the few silver.
Agreed. The levels you should buy them at are: 15-25-35-45-65-80
Greens aren’t necessary, blues work just fine. I chose those levels because that is when new trinkets are available. Now sometimes the armor you want isn’t at those levels on the TP at that time, or there are only greens and they are very expensive. It’s okay to buy new gear at say 26 or 27 instead of 25. Do what you think is right.
It works fine. It’s the tooltip that doesn’t update.
As someone who has played every other class but warrior, I’m struggling to determine which sigils to use as a D/P thief. I have a very high crit chance with my trait build and so I’m at a loss.
Dual 5% dmg increase sigils..
Dual bleed on crit sigils?……..no I’m not a condition thief, but still doesn’t hurt to ask.
Dual Steal life
—or any combo for that matter—
Thoughts?
I’m so sick of people whining. You know how much it can suck to play a thief in WvW, compared to other stealthers in other games? We need to use bow a lot, or get lucky and find someone to pick off in a mass of chaos.
You want to nerf Backstab? FINE! Give me permanent stealth (with reduced speed) in exchange.
Nothing beats DAoC when stealthers could climb walls and literally infiltrate enemy bases like true stealthers. Good times.
I’ve been a part of Whispers before so I spammed through. This time it was buggy. The epic cinematic didn’t have any of it’s sound effects, nor any of Riel’s lines. Instead, I heard part of Tybalt’s speech is sped through instead.
There was only one line that I heard:
What part of “secret society” wasn’t explained to you? Keep your voice down, Initiate, and pretend you’re buying an apple."
I already joined, so it’s not like I can test to see if I can duplicate this bug. I’m sorry.
I see! Thank you for helping me.
I am new to thief, only 21 and every now and then I’ll stealth; I can’t figure out why.
It’s not my traits..0/10/0/0/1.
I’m using heal on hit heal skill.
None of my utilities are stealth abilities
I’m using d/p so #5 skill doesn’t stealth me.
This happens when I DON’T use steal?
I am just trying to figure out what causes it. Any ideas? Am I missing something?
Have you ever used Grenade Kit under water? Wouldn’t it be great if you could do that on land?
I’m not talking about speed increase when you cast, but the auto attack. This wouldn’t bother me if we didn’t cast so fast, but having to spam it hurts after a while and is very annoying.
On land, you could have it so when you have a target selected, you can auto attack, but without a target it will function as it is now, target on the ground and you click, or in many cases just spam one if you have fast ground targeting on. It just seems unfair.
While I know I’ll probably be flamed for this, I would still like to throw this out there.
I saved up my 180 trophies to buy my third piece of Flame Legion gear. I was buying my boots. I sifted through the merchant and found my Medium boots (I’m a ranger). I made sure they were medium and they were the right stats. Because you guys haven’t figure out how to sort stuff my armor grade apparently. Once I found my boots, I double clicked to purchase.
Lo and behold, what enters my bags is not the item I chose, it was LIGHT. Same stats, but LIGHT. I cannot wear them, and I wanted the skin of the medium boots.
So let me get this straight, not only do we have to worry about the Diminishing Returns screwing us over because you didn’t test it properly, to where I get 2 tokens on my first attempt, but now I have to worry about the vendors not working as intended? Now..this game has just come out, bout month old. So of course there will be bugs, so I reported it and ask for an exchange with the boots still in my inventory. I asked for medium version, any stats because I just want the skin.
In return, I get this automatic distasteful response from a GM.

Hello XXXXXXX,
Thank you for contacting the Guild Wars 2 Support Team. We would like to be able to offer refunds or exchanges for purchases, but at this time we’re unable to make these kinds of adjustments to characters. For the foreseeable future, all in-game purchases such as those made with Karma, gold, or dungeon rewards are final, so please be extra cautious when making these types of purchases. I’m sorry that there’s not more that we can do in this case. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.

I call BS on this. There is no way you can’t reimburse my tokens or do a swap.
I did AC Explorable today. My friend got 60 tokens. I got 45 tokens, 19 silver, and 133k experience.
1) I haven’t run a dungeon in 2 days.
2) I hadn’t run Ascalon Catacombs Explorable in a couple of weeks.
3) I’ve run other dungeons since then.
4) The run took about 1 hour. There is no reason I should have gotten 45 tokens. I clearly did not run the dungeon too fast, because someone else got 60 tokens. I also did not grind that dungeon. I was there the entire time.
So is there another condition that we must fulfill, or is this patch broken for some people?
They simply do not test their patches. If they do, it’s nowhere near as much as they should. Stuff like this shouldn’t happen.
Just down right sad. You actually punish us for finishing it too quickly? Here’s an idea. Bring back the XP bonus to where it was previously when it scaled; however, make the dungeons HARDER. That way people get 1/3 – 1/2 of a level of experience for what..1 to 1.5 hours spent in a dungeon?
This might be slower than actual heart grinding in zones, but its a nice break from grinding without being jipped on the low rewards.
CM was easy, when you can speed run in in 15-20 minutes and gain half a level, yea I see the problem. Make it harder (which you did) but keep the rewards.
