This is a great thread! Thanks for putting up all the builds by category and giving a brief discription. It makes it easy to read and pickout a build that may fit a players playstyle. Great idea!
Kudos! You should continue to extend it with further builds,
This should be a STICKY!!
The build isn’t bad or anything. But you will regret not having condition removal in WvW. A pack of invaders tossing bleeds and immobilizes on you will eat you alive with no condition removal.
I use kit refinement with the elixir gun for it a lot myelf. Drop antidote just is never enough
I need more of an idea, concept, or intent, of your play style to recommend sigils or runes.
Could use sigil of force or accuracy and use Runes of the centaur, which gives power and 10s of swiftness every time you swap to the med kit. Then you could change “speedy kits” to kit refinement and have 100% swiftness up time and have “kit refinement” so every time you swap to FT or EG a condition is removed. With EG+kit refinement and Super elixer to have the ability to remove 2 conditions every 10s.
I was hoping the build wasn’t too terrible. Nice to know I wasn’t far off. Actually your right I’m already regretting not having enough condition removal. The one from the Med-Kit makes me want to stab someone. It just isn’t enough.
I’d be honest, never thought about kit refinement and elixir… odd why did I not ever think of that LOL.
I’m looking for a decent DPS build with decent support/survival. I’d like to be able to handle myself without having to go the glass cannon route. I also prefer versatility, being a one trick pony is boring for me so I must have at least one kit. (If I was restricted to one weapon… I’d go crazy). Would like to have some utility as well at my fingertips. I may not kill someone, but if I can annoy them to absolute lunacy, that in itself is worth it for me
TLDR: Decent average DPS build with support and some survival. Be able to handle myself decently without being face-rolled.
A few things:
- As far as I know Short Fuse doesn’t work on grenades, so that’s worth dropping.
- This build lacks survival, so balancing stats (Mainly toughness) is extremely important, along with managing cooldowns well.
- For Food I would suggest on crit health steal food, which would work well with grenades.
.
Are you sure? Odd Short Fuse saids it works with gernades. I’ll have to double check in game if it actually makes a difference or not. I could have sworn it did. If it doesn’t.. then hey that’s another trait I can pick instead.
Seems few folks have been mentioning the Elixir Gun. Haven’t really given it much thought but it may be the way to go for me. Especially since everyone keeps mentioning Kit Refinement. Already feeling the hurt on condition removal.
Without the boon stacking that you get from elixirs you may find the damage on rifle sub-par. So maximizing base damage is important.
Are you referring to Power? Aside from a better weapon upgrade and or higher Power not sure what your referring to really.
I think my original build has some survivabilty but not as much as I would like. I think majority of that is condition removal, although I may be lacking in other areas.
Crit Heal food… interesting. Will have to look in to that.
I actually like your selection for the build you provided. Thanks! I’ll give that a whirl to see how it goes.
Yet even more grenade builds. The Elixir gun doesn’t have good synergy with the grenade kit since most of its abilities require you to be point blank. If you like the tool kit and the elixir gun, try this: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/engineer/A-viable-build-Not-another-rant-post/first#post1355475
Good luck to you mate.
Quite a bit of people outside of this forum have suggested Elixir gun with Grenades. I think mostly when mobs/players are up in your face. Are the other folks wrong? Seems quite a bit suggest that they synergize quite well.
You know your build is actually quite interesting. Also yes… I love the Tool Kit So that build actually looks like fun. I’ll probably give it a go when I get home.
Thanks for your feedback!
Hey all,
I was hoping I can get some advice on my build and hopefully flush out a decent rifle build. I’ve tried the whole Elixir build with P/P and honestly it was lacking the umph I was looking for. I enjoyed it for the length of time I used it, yet I yearned for something different. This is especially true in WvW. I always had a close affinity with the rifle for some reason. So I’d figure I’ll give that a whirl with some kits and see how it plays out.
Hopefully will get some feedback on possible variants or changes I can make to my build. Just looking for something that I can do well in general in WvW and PVE. A build that isn’t just reliant on Elixirs. I prefer kits actually.
This is my current build. I once changed the Tool Kit to the Mine. However, I found that the use of the mine was a bit wonky for my taste. So I switched to the Tool Kit and it works out well I suppse.
Oh Sigil and Rune suggestions would be great
I picked speedy kits for the swiftness… however sometimes I feel it’s such a pain that I can live without it really. I know it makes getting around easier, but maybe those 10 points are best invested somewhere else?

For Iron Legion!
LOL the part with the Grenade teddy bears made me laugh. Half the time I use that kit that’s what I feel like I’m doing to monsters or players. Just tossing teddy bears at people because its really not doing much. Unless you go with the 100nades build which requires the planets to align, hell to raise from the depths, and finally world hunger to be solved, before you can do much with it.
Honestly, whether the link has a question mark or semi-colon or anything of that nature is irrelevant. The fact remains that these links SHOULD BE WORKING when we click on them (regardless of how the link is encoded). This is just common sense and it’s a basic fundamental ability surfing the internet or just browsing a site. There is NO reason why we should have to be forced to copy and paste links. The links work perfectly fine outside the scope of the forum, so it’s obvious that the link handling portion of the forum software is severely messed up.
The game has been out for months now. Why hasn’t the ‘BAD LINK’ issue been fixed on the forum yet? Seriously, this is just sloppy programming on your part, especially when people share builds and links on the forum all the time.
Please address this already!
@All:
Thanks all!
I’ve gotten some great and positive responses in this thread and I’ve decided to give my Necromancer a go. I deleted him and remade him as a Charr Necromancer, because for some reason they look really wicked….
Hopefully I won’t be disappointed that I picked this over the Elementalist
P.S: Feel free to keep posting here. I would still like to hear opinions and advice from other players.
@All Whom Posted:
First off, I would like to deeply thank everyone for taking the time to write such wonderful, constructive and at times motivating responses to my questions. It’s posts responses like those which is the reason I value the GW2 community so much. You will find very passionate and mature people willing to share their opinions and suggestions. Yes, you do have your occasional idiots but all in all I find people are willing to share what they’ve learned. Once again thank you!
I would like to take this time to point out a few things that some have said thus far. Although, a few of the posts have been motivating, I did find it a bit discomforting that everyone almost unanimously agreed with question #1. Yet, a few of you have suggested that even though this is the case; the profession as a whole isn’t that terribly flawed. It also has been suggested to work around the issues currently plaguing the profession. I will admit I do like a challenge, but it can only last so long if these so called bugs are rampant in the profession.
While reviewing what has been posted thus far, it has come to my attention that the Necromancers selection of viable weapons are very few indeed. There was mention of Dagger a few times as being one if not the only useful weapon (Staff aside of course.). I’m not entirely sure why this is the case other then falling under the category of nerfed/bug or just plain needs a complete rework/rehaul. Still I find this very concerning.
I also find it disheartening that the minions are completely and utterly useless. You would think a class with such an ability would be able to properly use the minions to their advantage. If anything some synergy with the minions they summon. Yet, as unbecoming as it seems, many of you have suggest to pretend they don’t exist. I do hope that A-Net comes to their senses and fix this, as it was one of the reasons I was drawn to the profession.
In the department of Elementalist a few of you have mentioned differences and similarities. Though, at times provided positive feedback on the Elementalist playstyle. This includes my issue with the attunement mechanic.
My general assessment and vibe of the responses I’ve gotten about Elementalists thus far in this post, I’ve translated in to this: (Please correct me if I’m wrong, which I may be. Yet this is the impression I got..)
“Elementalist are flavor of the month. There are a lot of them because they don’t suffer from much opportunity/negative skill costs. They can deal crazy damage and provide a ridiculous amount of support. If played well they can destroy mountains and part water in two.”
Of course I’m exaggerating and I did add a bit of humor, though I’m sure you got my point. I’m not for jumping on bandwagons and I do tend to play the underdog professions anyways. So I’m leaning ever so more towards the Necromancer.
In terms of the DPS I’ve gotten conflicting responses. Those that did sound like the planets have to align and the sky turn purple before a Necromancer can deal decent damage. I really hope I misinterpreted these responses.
I will admit I’m still a bit hesitate and undecided, but a few of you have restored my faith in the Necromancer.
I’ve gotten such fantastic responses thus far. I do hope this thread continues to get more suggestions and or opinions on the questions I’ve posted.
Hey all,
I’ve leveled up an Engineer and Mesmer to 80. Now I would like to work on another character. I’m torn between the Necromancer and Elementalist. Although, to be fair I’ve always favored Necromancer sort of classes in other games and especially in GW1. So I’m leaning towards Necromancer. That being said, I do have a few concerns and would like to see what sort of advice I get.
It would appear that the Necromancer has a lot of DOOM AND GLOOM surrounding it on this forum. It really has shocked me at the amount of negativity the class has. Then again I’m not an idiot and I do know that the majority of people posts on forums because they have something negative to say. I can’t remember where I read this, but it’s something like 3% of an MMO’s population ever post on the forums or something. So I’m not expecting a whole lot One can hope though!
1) The amount of negativity the profession has, has for a bit swayed me away from the profession. (Which is why I started looking into the Elementalist.) Is the Necromancer really THAT bad and should I stay away from it? Or do I take my own advice and just ignore everyone here, since people are just merely complaining for the sake of complaining? Honestly, would like to get some constructive feedback on this. The oddest part is the Elementalist forums doesn’t seem to be as bad, and I see a whole heap of them in WvW. Where I barely see Necromancers, this could be because of the lack of burst. Not entirely sure…. (scratches head)
2) Switching around on the Elementalist attunements seems daunting and I don’t want to get cramps from playing a profession. Yet there is A LOT of flexibility and control once you get it down. Does the Necromancer have mobility and skill synergy with the rest of the skillsets? Will I get bored at a certain level and only use one build because that’s the only one available? I’ve leveled a Necromancer up to 17 and thus far it seems like a lot of fun. Yet, I don’t want to get bored halfway or even endgame because the class is lacking.
3) Damage, now I normally don’t care about this but reading some threads it seems the Necro suffers from dps issues. Primarily, because it’s an attrition profession (or so it appears to be). This is fine, I’m used to this because Necromancers are usually like this in other MMO’s. However, lots of people are saying that even for an attrition class the dps is still lacking. Is it because of the bugs?
4) Pets…… it seems for a class that utilize pets you would see more people use it. In fact I barely seem Necromancers use pets. Are they completely useless or broken? I don’t understand it, leveling up I’m doing okay with them. Seems that going higher up I may get frustrated and not use them at all. Again, some feedback would be nice
5) WvW, is the Necromancer class feasible in WvW and sPVP? Do they least bring something to the table or should I look at the Elementalist instead, since everyone and their mother has one? (No joke I see Elementalist in WvW so much it’s like roaches!) There has to be a reason why I’m not seeing many Necromancers.
6) Finally Survivability. Hands down the Necromancer has more Survivability then my Elementalist. It seems my Elementalist takes 2 or 3 hits and dies. I expect as much from a burst profession, but it does get aggrevating. Does the Necromancer survivability continue to be as good higher up and into endgame? Should I expect it to eventually flat out and be just as bad as the Elementalist?
Thanks for taking the time to read this! Hopefully, I get some polite and positive constructive responses I can use to make my final decision.
I look forward to the responses!
I asked the same question awhile back (Greatsword or Staff). I had situations where people kept chuckling or mocking me because I was a Staff Mesmer. They all pretty much said Greatsword. So as a great slap to their faces, I stuck with Staff and I don’t regret it. I can easily handle multiple mobs and it’s a great way to annoy people. Go with what you like and don’t let others sway you otherwise.
ALSO! I Should note I use both Greatsword and Staff together. I switch between them frequently, but I much prefer the Staff. However, when I need to (which is often) I do switch to Greatsword and then back again to Staff. It’s about knowing your skills and how to efficiently use them.
Here is my original Post:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/mesmer/Which-Mesmer-Weapons-I-m-confused
Honestly, after watching your video of your 3-kit build I think your build is already pretty sweet. I do regularly run four kits though, with (I feel) good success in free tournaments.
Which video are you referring to? I don’t think I ever seen a video that has a Engineer using more than one or two kits. Could you please share again so I can take a look at it?
I think you were referring to a video by Aydenunited.
Love these videos! Fun to watch some Engineer builds and skills that are not common place. Thanks for your constant contributions and creative builds you keep sharing. Ignore the trolls, there is always someone whom will complain for the sake of complaining.
I thought you did actually really well, especially in that last video.
:( Wish there was a build that used multiple kits though!
Also I see you really love the rifle over the pistol
God forbid, that some professions can naturally beat other professions. I hope you weren’t expecting that every profession was evenly balance for 1v1 against every other profession in the game? Well… because it’s not. This isn’t a 1v1 game and you will be beaten by players whom are really good at their profession. Some professions will naturally shine better when against another profession. So you could beat other mesmers fine, but couldn’t defeat one really skilled mesmer then complain the class is OP, just because of this one skilled player? Seriously?!?!?!
The same could be said with any profession. It all comes down to skill. If a player is really really good at their profession than chances are they will bring you down. It happens! Just man up, learn from the experience and adjust your techniques.
I mean wow.. when I first read the initial post I just was speechless.
There are a lot of good responses here. I suggest you take their advice.
Okay I did the port forwarding and it didn’t help at all. I’m still getting these disconnects out of nowhere. I haven’t had any issues for nearly two months. Now randomly I’m getting disconnected the last two days for no apparent reason.
Please help!
Attachments:
I’m getting this issue now the last couple of days. Will be trying the port forwarding to see if it helps. Thanks for the write-up btw.
@IceCold: I feel yah bud. I’ve been getting the same issue as well for the last couple of days. Let me guess it just started randomly right? That’s what happened to me as well. I was paying fine for months until only recently. Seems I get disconnected every 5 or 10 minutes. So don’t feel like your the only one!

You folks aren’t the only ones suffering from this. It seems it’s randomly started happening just a few days ago. I would say after December 25 it’s gotten worse actually. Yesterday for me was really bad. I couldn’t play more than a few minutes before getting disconnected.

I can say without a doubt that I was getting this issue non-stop yesterday. I must have disconnected around 30 or so times before I finally gave up. I haven’t had any issues playing the game for months and now randomly I’m getting disconnected. Like I mentioned before lots of people where complaining about this via the /map channel. So I wasn’t the only one affected. It seems the servers are on the fritz since december 25.
This really needs to be addressed

You folks aren’t the only ones. I keep getting randomly disconnected for no apparent reason. I have a perfect connection as I’ve tested it with other games. So it’s obviously something on ArenaNets servers.
I’ve about given up trying to do story quests because it always restarts at the beginning. They really should have an option to continue where you got disconnected.
Anyways yeah few folks on the /map said they were getting disconnects too.
It’s like random lag spikes or something.
@nofo.8469: Hey thanks for taking the time to respond Yep I’m having tons of fun on my Engineer now. Btw after all the advice I got here and some tips from friends, my survivability is through the roof now. Granted I’m not doing super dps BUT at least I can hold my grand now. I pretty much kill folks by attrition. I’m running with an Elixir build and boy is it crazy fun. Alchemy trait line is a must! I don’t die instantly anymore and I feel like I’m contributing now with my defensive skills as well as providing boons to my teammates when I throw the elixirs (plus my non-elixir skills as well). I have the elixir gun kit as well and switch to it to provide some support. All in all I’m very happy with the current state of my Engineer. Thanks to all the great advice I’ve gotten here.
I have greater control of the fights now and I feel like I’ve got a good handle on my skills.
All I can say is practice, practice, practice…. Sure the Engineer has it’s up/down but honestly I think all the professions have their problems. Engineer skill level requires a bit more involvement and I think that’s why people get so frustrated.
Update: Still having fun with my Engineer. I stopped paying attention to all the naysayers. If you like a profession enough, you find ways around the shortcomings.
Once again thanks for all the positive and constructive responses
Thanks everyone for the responses! I’ll be sticking with my staff because well.. “It just works for me”. I really didn’t any replies as to why I shouldn’t use the staff at all. I guess those folks I’ve come across that just laugh at me or tell me otherwise are either wrong or opinionated about the staff.
@Animando.7956: I do switch to the sword/focus often actually. I love the warden, he does so much crazy damage if used properly. Also he reflects projectiles! Just stand right at the center of the Warden and viola! Not sure why people don’t use the warden skill from the focus. I must be a minority. Oh I also switch with a pistol sometimes…
Also that video you linked is brilliant! He goes in to finite details about the Mesmer workings and is usually similar weapons to me. Though I don’t use the same trait lines as him in the video. I’m not a big fan of pulling mobs towards the warden using the focus #4 skill. Gave me some great ideas though on how to utilize the staff. Thanks for posting this!
(edited by Xruptor.3965)
@jportell.2197:
I’m currently Chaos traited. I have my gear as well as my traits geared towards conditional damage. That’s not to say I don’t put points in to power either. I do run a sword/focus as well. Once things get started and I pickup boons and my foe receives conditions, I actually do feel like it’s ‘raw power’ since the mob goes down fast. Unless, you mean the boomstick feeling (approach) you get with certain other weapons If that’s the case then yes, it’s not instantly ‘BOOM’ but it gets the job done. I agree thought about the synergy part which is why I’m trying to work with the staff.
@TristanTzara.4628: Yeah I hear you. I don’t come across many staff mesmers and sometimes I feel so out of place. Like I’ve mentioned in my previous posts, I made this topic to get some insight if I’m doing things wrong. Yep we can change to other weapons later but if I’m going to level I might as well get practice on weapons that would be more beneficial.
I’ve hadn’t heard any negative comments in any of the posts thus far regarding staffs. I guess that’s a good sign.
Any more responses or advice are welcomed. Especially, from those that feel I should stray away from the staff and give a reason as to why
@Animando.7956:
First thanks for the response
As for the staff, it is working for me and I find myself doing well for it. I merely questioned the reasoning as to why people keep telling me that the staff stinks and I should use something else. I figured, maybe I’m overlooking something or maybe I should focus on another weapon if so many people feel that staff is terrible.
In all honesty, I came to the forums to post my experience with this as I’ve already had a few people tell me the same thing about the staff. I’m hoping that folks here on the forums can give more insight or provide advice.
Would love to hear from more people though on this topic. Thanks for your response Animando, it’s much appreciated!
First off, I’m loving my mesmer. Lots of methods for controlling fights and the illusion mechanic is great It’s like peek-a-boo … I kill you.
That being said, I’m level 30 and I use Staff and Sword/Focus for leveling. I switch between them depending on the fights, but I mostly stick with staff really. I’ve had already several people either laugh at me or tell me that the staff is absolutely useless and I shouldn’t bother with it. I don’t understand, I seem to doing fine with it. I use it for the boons and conditions and I find I can control fights with several mobs easily using it. I actually do much better with the staff than any of the other weapons I’ve tried. So you can understand why I’m a bit confused…..
I KEEP getting people telling me to use Greatsword this and Greatsword that… Greatsword, Greatsword, Greatsword…… Sometimes I have folks telling me that I should do Sword/Sword and Greatsword. I don’t mind the Greatsword really but I much prefer the staff. Is the Greatsword really that much more powerful for leveling? I thought it was nerfed or something, I don’t like the skills on the Greatsword anyways much. I’ve used it and it does have it’s uses but it doesn’t fit my playstyle much.
So my question is this. Is the staff reall that so terrible that I should stop using it period? I don’t know maybe it isn’t as useful higher up in level. I had one person tell me today that conditions were nerfed several patches ago and I shouldn’t bother.
I’m really confused right now as to what weapons I should be focusing on. I thought they were all pretty decent actually. I switch to Sword/Focus often and sometimes I even use Sword/Torch. Depends on what I’m in the mood for really
Thanks in advance for the responses!!!
A lot of posters here in the Engineer forum are justified and have the right to be angry at the current state of the profession.
Why do you ask? Because they are VERY PASSIONATE about the Engineer class. Believe it or not, but a lot of folks actually really love the Engineer and enjoy not only the mechanics but the lore behind the profession. What they are angry about is the silence from ArenaNet when it comes to fixing known bugs. It doesn’t help either that the Engineer receives constant nerfs instead of fixes to an already injured profession.
With that said, I fall under the category of a passionate Engineer player. I absolutely love the class! I want it to be the best it can be and that includes getting a lot of the bugs fixed. Those of us who don’t throw up our hands and give up on the Engineer are the ones truly committed to the class and fight to get our voices heard. Hopefully, eventually ArenaNet will finally grace us and give us much needed responses and bug fixes.
Funny you mention this. They’ve actually not said a single word in the Engineer forum for as long as I can remember. If you actually go back several pages you’ll see there isn’t a ArenaNet Developer response at all. (and I don’t mean the bumped developer posts that are extremely old).
Now this can mean a few things.
1) They don’t have time to constantly make responses on the class forums. (This is the obvious choice).
2) They know about the issues that the Engineer profession has and are keeping silent about it.
3) They think the class is fine and are ignoring all the legitimate complaints and bugs the profession has.
4) They’ve given up on the class and see no point in posting or commenting on it at all.
5) They’re working on fixes and improvements to the Engineer profession and are just keeping quiet about it.
6) They don’t visit the profession forums often, and only read the sticky threads.
7) They hate us…..
Personally I think it’s #1 and #5. They can’t possibly respond to every thread.
That being said, I do believe it is appropriate to communicate with your community at least once in awhile. I know it’s the holidays but they’ve could have at least posted something prior to the holidays. Once a month isn’t going to kill them.
Oops knew I forgot something. Once in awhile the word filter filters out incorrectly and breaks some of the links as well. I’ve seen a few with the random characters as parameters being word filtered with ‘kitten’ in it
The forum is breaking a lot of links that users post. Majority of links I click on lead to the ‘BAD LINK’ page, WHEN in fact the links are actually valid.
I’m not sure what’s going on, but please fix this. A lot of people post their builds but most of the links never work. I have to most of the time copy and paste the link myself rather than click on it.
Again this is happening with a huge portion of the links across the forums. I’m surprised you folks haven’t realized this or fixed it yet.
Here is an example:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/engineer/Flamethrower-Elixir-Gun-Build
In that forum two of the links are broken when in fact they are valid links. (Copy and Paste them). This is just an example of broken links I keep coming across on this forum.
Thanks!
@Maskaganda.2043:
WOW An elixir build is crazy awesome fun! Why didn’t I think of this before! My survivability is through the roof and I do decent to great damage with conditions.
Now I remember why I feel in love with the Engineer class in the first place. With all the modifications to my traits with the advice here, and the upgrade to my gear as well as modified playstyles, I’m once again loving my Engineer.
I would like to thank everyone whom has helped me so far! You guys/gals are great!
P.S: Elixirs are awesome!
@vanash.2671
Thanks for the response! Yep I’ve already started modifying my traits with some of the advice I’ve gotten. I’m also working on toughness/vit on my gear. I’ve started to notice a difference actually Sure my dps suffered a bit but it was worth it. It seems I’m slowly but surely improving my survivability and honestly at this point… it’s really not that bad. I’m sure with some more tweaking I should alright in the dps/surivability department. BTW I’ve always used the toolkit. It’s a must for me because of the shield and the magnetic pull, also prybar in the face does wonders! In terms of Elixir S I recently put points into Alchemy and boy that helped! Has saved my life a few times already.
I will be blunt and say some folks keep using abbreviations and names that I’m just not familiar with.
For example:
What do you mean by knights gear?
What is berserkers pieces? (folks keep bringing this up)
What is P/S? I believe this must be Pistol/Shield?
I’m not sure why but there are several links across the forums that are broken, but in fact work. It seems that Guildwars 2 Forums is breaking links because it’s not properly formatting them when it uses it’s built in redirect.
I do apologize for the link confusion.
FOLKS Copy and Paste the links! Don’t Click! For some reason the forum software ANET uses is breaking links across the forums.
Here is my build: http://tinyurl.com/ckmsg6r
Here is an alternate link: http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?fcIQFAUl0pyUH5y3F17Iy4DdGIFAWe9RBb9gA;TEADKA
WOW such great positive responses from the Engineer community. Thank guys/gals! I’m already applying some of these suggestions to practice. Hopefully it should make my survivability go up Well the elixirs from alchemy trait line are already making a different :X
@KICKER.3874
Thanks for the response! The link I provided works but apparently GuildWars forums is breaking all the links. Just copy and paste it instead of clicking it and it should work. I apologize for that!
It seems that you are going more for a burst build with some survivability. I’ve seen similar ideas and builds not nothing that is exactly like yours. I think one of them is ZAPPLANT.
I never really thought of using the goggles as part of an attack. I’ve only ever used them to get rid of stun and get the blindness immunity. Even then I switched to rocket boots since it removes stuns anyways but the toolkit skill is great! I might have to give the goggles another try Especially since your saying the toolkit skill works wonders.
When you say that its 5 rifle shots are you just spamming all the toolkit skills? I’m assuming you compensate with people moving by using slows. Hmm so a jump and swat tactic seems to be what your suggesting. Even though you bring folks down fast when they retaliate is your ability to withstand a beating feel tough or do you feel like a glass cannon? That’s my problem right now. I can do the damage at times but I feel like I’m swiss cheese…
Yeah I think everyone has issues with thieves I’ll give some of your ideas a shot especially going back to the goggles (I always thought they were useless! LOL).
@Lunar Corporation.5720
I’m not 80 yet but I’m really darn close. I think I should be noticing SOME difference so close to 80. I’m still working on the gear and nope I don’t have the exotic weapon. (Does it really make that much of an impact? I’m curious…)
I’m trying not to be to much DPS really :X But I get stuck in situations where everyone it out dpsing by a large amount (I understand that I can’t be a super awesome DPS king, but I should be relatively around the same level as the other classes). I won’t lie though… it is CLOSE to some of the other professions but not quite. I blame that on gear. It could be that it’s the gear that is causing me to do so poorly in that department. Either way, your right I can sacrifice some of the DPS for surivability. Which is why I’m asking here in the thread. I’ve already had some fantastic responses from some great folks. I’m seriously taking all the advice and putting it into practice already. I’ve modified my traits and added some alchemy to compensate. A few have mentioned gear so I’m working on that now.
Lately I’ve been analyzing the battles I’ve been in especially when I’ve died. I’ve noticed a large chunk of that is conditions. Funny I thought I had that avenue covered, but seriously speaking… the med-kit condition removal isn’t cutting it. You may be right and that’s why I’ve been dying so often. A combination of direct damage and conditions. Though I did notice much of the impact of my death was the initial blows of damage (ESPECIALLY from warriors).
Oooooh protection buff sounds like a great idea! I’ll have to look at the traits and skills that trigger it. I thought we only had one or two skills that did it. scratches chin something to think about!
Thank you so much for your advice and contribution! I truly appreciate it!
No one else has any suggestions, opinions or advice? That’s kinda of saddening. I was expecting a bit more feedback.
First off, thank you so much for you kind and constructive response. That’s exactly what I was looking for. Sometimes another perspective is all that is needed. Along with a push in the right direction.
Your actually not the first person to mention the Static Discharge thing. Ironically the skill I picked out happen to be similar to a few builds for the Static Discharge. I like the rocket boots for the tool ability when I magnet someone to me. The knock-back from them is a great way to escape sometimes. I personally find the toolkit to be a must. The magnetic pull, the pry-bar to the face, and the shield is a godsend. Which is why I use it. Also I use the turret as assistance during pve so I keep it around. It is useful for the knock-back if I explode it I’m not running a Static Discharge build though.
That being said let me respond to some of your comments.
I use the swiftness toolkit trait because it’s a must for me. I find character movement to be slow and at times it’s great for a get away.
I’m honestly not entirely sure about Static Discharge and how useful it is really. I mean I’ve seen it when I’ve tested it but it doesn’t seem to do much damage. Maybe it’s just something I’m not seeing. THOUGH I did accidentally pull a group of monsters with it LOL!!! I used the heal kit and it sent a spark flying (was funny).
Hmm you say I’m going full DPS in terms of defensive utilities/traits. I don’t think I completely follow you here. Unless you mean the trait lines which I only picked the DPS ones. You are right my only condition removal is the kit. I didn’t really think about using the alchemy one, didn’t think it was effective. I also never thought about Sigil of Purity. I may have to give those two a look. Do you think I should focus on Toughness? Or maybe shift myself a bit in to another trait line? I DON’T MIND LOSING DPS. Really I’m not in it to be a glass cannon or a super duper dpser. I just want to be able to DPS effectively and hold my ground (be able to defend myself). I tried the elixir gun but it didn’t seem that effective as well. I may have to give it another look. It could be it has combo’s or combination that work well which I haven’t realized or used.
In reference to the Alchemy line, I’ll be honest I wasn’t too familiar with it. Figured I’d go another route. Though after looking into it closely it may be something I would want to invest in. Seems it gives a boost in survivability.
I LOVE the rifle. Great abilities and the utility is sound. Hate the cool-downs on it though and your right it’s really only for single target.
BTW: I did at one time use a condition build or at least focused on condition. Double Pistol and such. It worked well for awhile but I saw that it wasn’t fairing as well as my previous builds with the rifle. I wouldn’t be surprised that I was doing something wrong. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind returning to a condition build but would need a little more insight in it and a bit of reading for me to get back to it It was actually a lot of fun while I used it. I used the shield once or twice but never could get really in to it.
Do you think I should focus on Vitality or Toughness more? Right now my priority is Power as quite a number of Engineers have told me to focus on that. It’s the DPS stat but if sacrificing it for the other attributes improves my game-play, than I’m for it Just let me know what you think.
Finally I want to thank you again for sharing your time and insight into the class. I truly love this class and have since before the game release. It can be rough sometimes but I think with some practice and enough effort it worth it in the end. You can’t shine without some polish!
If anyone else has anything else to add or share to further improve my engineer, I’d really love to hear it. (please be mature and constructive)
First off, I want to make it clear that amongst the flaws the class has, I love my Engineer. I have several alts but I keep going back to him. I think the main reason I find myself going back to my engineer toon because I like the idea of the kits and the turrets and such. I’m constantly fine tuning my skills and traits based on my play style (I don’t like using many cookie cutter builds.) However, I do use them as guides for ideas on what I could change.
That being said, I’m asking for assistance in terms of pvp and wvw. I find myself in many many MANY situations where I get 1, 2 even 3 shotted by classes. It gets extremely frustrating and in wvw I feel completely worthless sometimes. I do get the occasional kill and sometimes manage to do some good, but I just don’t feel like I contribute much. The DPS just doesn’t seem on par with the majority of opponents I face in WvW.
There has GOT to be something I’m doing wrong. Possibly some gear changes or skill changes or something. Maybe a different way to tackle things or it could be working with buffs and such. At this point I’m open to anything really. I’m tired of being hit once or twice and constantly having to use my self heal. There has to be a better way.
I hope that Engineers just aren’t so completely gimped or nerfed that there is nothing I can do.
Warriors kill me pretty much instantly (being hit for 2k -4k per hit with their skills, I usually die in like 2 maybe 3 or 4 hits).
Thief class literally is pointless for me since they kill me (instantly if backstab, or within a few seconds because of the damage they can do with some of their skills. The constant vanishing and stealth doesn’t help either)
Mesmer (dps literally kills me by attrition, mostly I have issues with clones and such).
Ranger (I don’t have much issues with these though they can be annoying sometimes )
Necromancer (various on encounter, though the condition potion from the med kit works wonders for the conditions necromancers do on me. They can be a pain but not always.)
Guardian dps me down within a few hits. The DPS they can do is crazy and they can take quite a beating. Sometimes I don’t even bother and just fight other battles.
Elementalist kill me quickly as well. Their damage is insane as well and their molten skill kills me within 2 or 3 seconds. Honestly, I don’t last very long against these as well. Few hits and I’m dead. It’s worse if they are fire attuned.
I’m not looking for L2P (Learn 2 Play) responses. I’m looking for honest advice and possibly some guides or people to point me in the right direction. Maybe share some of their builds. Really anything at this point! I’m not giving up on this class but seriously it’s getting frustrating!
Still wondering on what attributes I should focus on. (Right now I’m doing Power/Precision/Vitality/Toughness)

(dances) my download is almost complete… boy that took awhile.
Mmm… this isn’t exactly a small patch either.
LOL my downloading is going absolutely bonkers! It downloads for a bit, then goes into that same error connecting retrying…. then it downloads a bit more… and error connecting retrying… (repeat this process over and over).
It’s not perfect but hey at least it’s downloading!
I’m getting this issue too… I was downloading at one point then it went BOOM.
OH WAIT… it just started downloading!
