Basically, is most of the stuff account bound and would I miss out on much by not doing this on my ranger?

I’d probably try run with smaller groups so hoping Clerics will be alright. Would you suggest to still use dagger with the sword of switch to say the warhorn? (Sorry for going on about the Clerics version so much!)

Might try grinding the materials for the Apothecary gear at some point. I have a Guardian at 80 so this might make it a little easier.

Made my Ranger last night and ran around with the GS for 10 minutes. Feels pretty good so far, so looking forward to getting some levels!

All makes sense to me. My main reason for running the clerics version over apothercary is the gold issue, but I also quite like the look of the GS

In the end, I will just have to see how things go. I have 80 levels ahead of me so plenty of time to figure it out!

Thanks for the overwhelming replies I had a little go at this in spvp last night and had a blast. I tried the conditions variation first and seemed to do reasonably well, even though I had no real idea what I was doing. I then tried clerics with a Greatsword (as this is what I will end up with unless I can make some gold!) and while I didn’t feel I did quite as much damage, I felt I could survive a little longer.

I suppose my question really was how the spec itself plays outside of WvW/PvP. I would probably be able to throw some knights/zerker gear in when just out in Tyria to kill quicker. I generally play with my partner and we aren’t hardcore/great players, so won’t be doing massive amounts of explores/fractals. I also generally dislike running in zergs/massive groups in WvW, as it generally bores me, so I prefer to roam and this spec/gameplay looks great for it, so I wanted to get a good feel for it before taking it out to WvW.

Again, thank you for the advice and any more would be most appreciated!

Thanks for posting this. I had planned to start a Ranger and this definitely helps as I quite fancy playing at a closer range.

Would this style of play also work quite well for general levelling/PVE? I’d like to spend time learning this in both PVE/WvW. I would probably lean more towards the clerics version as my gold funds are not great, so would struggle with the Apothecary gear.

Would this work with Rares, until I get the PVT Exotic gear, or should I use something else for now?

I did use the phantasm build the other night and jumped into WvW for a few minutes. I think I downed 2 players in around 10 seconds- it was madness, but then a couple of mates came along and blew me up!

To the original poster- I found greatsword or staff with sword/focus a great way to level, focusing on phantasms to do good damage, but also provide great damage myself.

Oh, and the other reason I like this build so far… I have an 80 ele that I took d/d and nobody told me beforehand that you had to take crack cocaine to effectively play that build. This one I can do quite well with just caffeine and, I hope, achieve the same results.

@Alexparris: This build works fine in PvE. It’s just fine though. It stays alive. It does mediocre damage for the most part. It’s ok. The thing is, by taking this build, you miss out on a ton of utility that other builds can provide for your party, you miss out on a lot of damage you can have without losing much survivability, it’s just overall not as good for PvE because you don’t have to invest so much in survivability in PvE to stay alive and not take damage. It’s total overkill for PvE, and loses damage and group utility in obtaining that level of overkill.

Ok, thanks for letting me know. I will probably stick with the Phantasm build for now, as currently helping my partner level her first character, and we can blitz through content this way!

I recommend doing ac runs for the Pvt gear, if you aren’t one of those that equates dungeon running to flaying themselves with a spork (as was an analogy made earlier in this thread). Just make sure you find a couple people who know what they’re doing. Ac really isn’t very tough, despite the large numbers of people complaining about it. You can also get a nearly full set of Pvt gear from orr karma vendors if you have excess karma lying around.

Yeah, cheers- I have most of the karma gear on my guardian, so need to start saving for the Mesmer. I think I have enough for 1 piece at the moment. I have done a couple of AC runs in the past- I just get put off at the thought of skipping most of it and then it becoming mindnumbingly boring, but I guess I will just have to put up with it

Thanks for the comprehensive guide- I have always played a phantasm mesmer so will be good to try something else.

EDIT: Just to add, can this build work well in PVE, perhaps using zerker/knights gear, and moving traits/skills about? I would like to try stick with 1 build as such.

Is there any chance of linking the buildcraft build or PMing it? I was messing about with gear and cannot get that sort of crit damage and healing power I didn’t mess about with buffs and food though.

I am aiming towards this and only level 25 at the moment, but it’s really fun. I am slowly getting the hang of constantly changing attunements too.

Regarding the OP’s main build- I was wondering if dropping the trait to remove a condition when switching to water and replacing with the one that reduces the cooldown on catrips would be a better idea, or is the first trait better?

I am looking forward to being a higher level so I can get some more points and play the build to its fullest.

I’d say Guardian would be an ace partner for Elementalist though.

Yeah pistol is nice- I wouldnt say way better, or even better as such, but leads to different gameplay. I just got used to having the swiftness and more aoe from focus

The sword/focus set is really good. The auto attack is reasonable and strips a boon, the 2 ability is nice aoe dps and makes you invulnerable for the duration, the 3 is a leap ability that triggers combo fields and imobilises, the focus 4 is for swiftness and pulling mobs to a location and the 5 ability is a phantasm that deals great aoe dps and can reflect, but is static.

This can be paired nicely with greatsword and staff for offense/more defense.

Still looking for opinions on this build for general PVE. I would probably stick with sword and focus for this and swap to Phantasmal Fury as suggested above.

Just thinking, would the scepter/torch be a better combo for stacking confusion, or perhaps sword/torch? I guess the leap from sword into a combo field gives more uptime on chaos armor etc (Sorry, unable to view the video at the moment, so cannot see your full reasons for sword/focus)

Also, would this build work for PVE? Perhaps swapping the odd trait and ability for different situations. I currently use a phantasm build, which is great, but I feel its not massively effective in WvW.

I am not great at money making on here so unable to keep flicking between specs and gear for PVE/WvW.

I always go 10 in Death Magic first. The reduced cooldown is essential at lower levels. After that picking up 10 in Soul Reaping and 10 in Spite are the best ways to go until you reach lvl 40. From 40 all your points go back into Death Magic or Spite. I prefer Death magic for more lifetime on your minions or into Siphon Health from minions.

Dagger/Focus is fine. Dagger/WH is better for pure personal damage, and Axe/Focus is great for building vulnerability for your Minions. What alot of guys do is Focus 4 and Axe 1 to build vuln. Use Axe 2 swap to dagger/Wh hit wh 5, smack with the dagger until CD on weapon swap is up than swap back to axe hit 2 restock the vuln and repeat.

Hi all.

Me and a couple of friends are looking to join an active social guild to do dungeons, quests and wvw with. (the usual!)

We are currently on Anvil Rock (US) but do not specifically have to stay there.

We created a guild at the start with a few friends but they have stopped playing and would like to find a new bunch of guys to enjoy the game with. It’s not much fun in a dead guild.

If any guild can accommodate us (3 or 4 of us), please get in touch!

PS – we are from across the pond in the UK, so our usual playing hours during the week would be afternoon/early evening for you guys I guess! The reason for this is because one of the guys plays from Korea and it was the fairest way to choose a server in the US for us all.
