I was in an overflow server for the Marionette event. After the opening cutscene, I noticed that my internet connection was failing. I immediately ran over to another player to get his name.
Upon coming back about 30 seconds later, I was in a new overflow server. I /joined on that player’s name and came back into my original overflow server. I then proceeded to kick the Marionette’s butt with everyone else in that overflow. (To be more specific: I did lane 3 and boss 2, then went to lane 1 and did boss 5, then went to lane 4.) We won. I received successful event credit for the 3 lanes that I protected. I did not receive the Marionette 5 chest, the daily “defeat a boss” chest, and I did not get the daily achievement “Boss Thumper XVIII”.
Clearly something went wrong here. Since I did get the lane event achievements, I think it has to do with the fact that I disconnected and came back to the same overflow server. I’ve disconnected before in a main server and came back and got rewards. But I really can’t be sure.
I seriously doubt that I’m going to get the loot that I missed out on, so I’m not even daring to hope for that. But I do hope that this bug gets fixed. I was already refusing to do the event on my home server (they’ve really regressed and outside of the reset, can’t get enough to finish 2 bosses any more), but with this bug in play, I’m considering just not doing the event at all. And that’s a bummer because I love this event. It’s just so exciting. It’s just not worth it if I’m not going to get any loot at all.

Everyone who has done the Marionette event knows that the champs and occasional “trash” (non-champ) monster will drop a piece or two of a key. You can get them pretty regularly during the event, whether you are fighting near the portal or at the bottom of the lane.
However, the unsung heroes of each lane are those who wield the mighty repair hammer. It’s a slow process and makes it to where they don’t get any of the “trash” loot because they aren’t doing any damage. I feel this goes against the spirit of GW2, since playing helpful is normally beneficial. For example, if you rez someone, you get xp.
Is it possible to make it so that if you are repairing with a hammer, you will get an occasional key piece, too? As it is now, someone has to sacrifice all their trash loot if they want to use the hammer. They are doing just as much for the event completion as those who are killing the monsters, yet they are getting much less from it.
(This may include those in the golems and arrow carts, but I can’t say with 100% certainty whether they get loot or not.)
Allow me to start by saying that we reproduced the problem ourselves and figured out how to solve it. But it’s still a bug.
My wife and I created characters to level up together. As such, we created them as the same race with the same motivational background stuff so that we could do our personal stories together. This worked fine until the always problematic “Battle of Fort Trinity” level 70 story.
She activated the story and I entered with her. Trehearne does some jibber-jabber with a couple of soldiers. Then you are supposed to walk up to him and initiate a cutscene (Report to Trehearne at Fort Trinity). We could hear the noise indicating that the section was finished (speak to Trehearne) and it grayed it out in our progression at the top-right of our screen. However, the cutscene never showed up and it didn’t tell us the next part of our story (Check on the Logging Camp). We waited a few minutes and nothing happened.
We then exited and re-entered. Once again, she activated the personal story and I entered with her. The same problem occurred. We tried a third time; this time I activated the personal story and she followed me in. The same problem occurred.
At this point, we decided that we would both try it solo. I entered into my own instance and she entered into her own instance. It worked fine for both of us.
Now, I seriously doubt that one personal story bugging out for multiple people is high up on your priority list and I get that, but we both want to express displeasure over it. We enjoy playing together and that very much includes doing our personal stories together. This bug was annoying, both for the time wasted (waiting on it to progress) and because we were forced to do it apart from each other.
Also, if I actually have the attention of someone from Anet, my wife wants to express displeasure at how she didn’t feel epic at this part of the story. In all the other parts, she’s felt like she was actually the one in charge doing things and making a difference in the story. But in this one, there were sections where the soldiers would have everything killed before she could even arrive or monsters just kept infinitely spawning while she was trying to resurrect the soldiers. Her suggestion? Make all the monsters drop loot. For some reason, she associates getting loot with making a difference. It’s not something I ever noticed before, but yeah, it does make sense.
As someone who missed the dungeon, I’m also upset. But, my reason is slightly different than the family guys reason.
I logged on every day of the event. I did Act 1 during Act 1, but then during Act 2, I asked a question: “Can people still do Act 1?” The answer was yes. At that point, I decided that I could make time for all the Halloween events ON Halloween. It seemed more appropriate and, since my wife had to work, gave me plenty of time to enjoy myself.
So I log on, finish Acts 2 and 4 … have every achievement except for the dungeon. What. The. Heck?! They closed the dungeon? Why? None of the other material was closed!
Supposedly people were given ample warning that the content would no longer be available. I never saw such a warning or I would have done the dungeon. I logged on every day during Act 3 to do my daily, battleground jump puzzles, and collect orichalcum. Not once did I hear that the dungeon was going to be closed before Halloween.
So I’m upset. I’m sitting at 3/4 on the Mad King’s Realm and that’s all I have left for completion. It would have been nice if we had some kind of warning to tell us that it was only going to be up for 2-3 days instead of until the end of the Halloween event. I’m highly annoyed.
And, just so everyone is aware, I’m in a small guild of about 15 people. None of us knew that it would be open only during Act 3 and so none of us got the achievement. Clearly this information was not “widely available”.
I logged on to finish my daily and all I had left was the daily kill count. When I started to kill a monster, I noticed three people killing together. I’m a tank/healing spec and killing monsters is slow for me, so I decided to tag along. I quickly realized something: these 3 players were running in perfect sync and killing in perfect sync. By that, I mean that as soon as one started to run, the other 2 would run as well, never deviating from the path that the first was taken. In other MMO’s, it was like they were using a /follow command. They would also all start attacking at the same time. Clearly, this was one player controlling all 3 with some sort of program controlling the two that were following.
My question: is this allowed? I reported all 3 characters for botting, but I also made a note of their names. This is currently going on in Cursed Shore on the Yak’s Bend server. I’m not providing their names here in case this is legal. But — is it legal? If so, I mistakenly reported someone who should not have been reported, but it doesn’t seem as though this should be allowed. At the very least, it seems to be against the spirit of the game. I wish I could have taken a video of it, but I don’t have that capability on this laptop.
This story would have been so much more epic if you had lost the fight. :p
Nate: I’m aware that there’s a chance that we are being incredibly unlucky. That’s why I included the amount of orichalcum ore that I’ve personally mined. Is it possible that I’ve mined 1500 orichalcum ore (and probably 1500 each of the other ores, as well, so 1500 copper + 1500 iron + 1500 platinum + 1500 mithril, but only 500 or so silver and 500 or so gold), then what’s the chance that I only just now start getting the bonuses? I can do the math, but that would be infinitesimally small. This isn’t simply being unlucky. My server has dominated a couple of the WvW’s. No, this is a bug.
I want to throw in my personal experience with this and vent some frustration while I’m at it.
I did switch servers a long while back. Probably about 2 weeks after the game started. I’ve not switched since then, so it’s been at least a month since I’ve transferred.
I play beside a friend. Once, he said something like, “Oohh – I got a second hit on those omnomberries! Oh, and another! And another! 7 total!” I was incredulous and did not believe him. Then, a few minutes later, he claimed it happened again with another weed. After a day or so, I finally looked over his should and witnessed it personally: not only was he usually getting 2 per pick (as I often do), he was getting to pick at the weed multiple times. Furthermore, this was happening with ore and wood as well, something that had never happened with my characters.
Now, to put this in perspective: I have mined between 1200-1500 orichalcum ore. I have never received more than 1 orichalcum per swing and I have never gotten to swing at an orichalcum node more than 3 times. I didn’t even know such a thing was possible until it happened to him. Repeatedly. (Note: this is true for all other ores as well, except for Rich Iron Ore nodes. I have no idea, but often on a rich iron node I can get between 15-18 per node, total.) He frequently gets bonus swings and bonuses on wood, ore, and weeds, while I never did.
I witness this with my own eyes or I would not believe it. I pay close attention myself and I know exactly how much I am supposed to receive. One daily run of orichaclum nets me 36 ore. It never deviates from this number. However, as of about yesterday, I finally started to receive some extras. I finally got extra swings on the ancient wood and received two per swing. What’s the difference? What changed? I don’t know, but it only changed as of yesterday. I still haven’t received any extra ore from this, but I do note that now my weeds and wood are working properly.
I would have posted this MUCH earlier. In fact, I was prepared about 3 weeks ago to post this. However, I only, moments ago, finally got the 401 error resolved and was able to log in to the forums. Imagine my frustration that the 401 error gets resolved and I can log in, right as my problem seemingly resolves itself in the game. The timing is annoying to say the least. But at least now my errors are resolved. Or, I think and hope they are.
10 is the supposed limit, but on some characters it gets full at 9/10.
