Why don't most rangers name their pets?

in Ranger

well, i agree that there is a “problem” with the pet names saving. but i REFUSE to call it a “bug”. bugs are when things don’t work as intended. in this case, they did not put the feature to save the name into the code. therefore, there is no code to be bugged.

the name saving feature is not “bugged”; it simply doesn’t exist…

What are you smoking? They gave us the ability to name our pets. Those names are not retained when swapping pets. In some cases those names are copied to other pets.

If I name my black bear Steve and then pull out my Jungle Spider the spider should not be named Steve. But many times it is.

That is a bug.

And don’t even get me started on how my pet randomly runs off and attack mobs…

You’re clearly and undeniably not paying attention here. My post is painfully obvious in regards to name SAVING. That’s S-A-V-I-N-G…

There is no PET NAME SAVE FEATURE. You are naming the SLOT.

And this isn’t about your pet “randomly runs off and attacks mobs…” This is about the names/saving/lack-of…

Are rangers really that bad?

Before you fell in love with a ranger, try a warrior with a rifle/bow. Or try both and engineer and a thief with pistols before you take the final descision. My main is a ranger of 40 lvl and i gave all myself to him. I’ve gone not so far but even now it’s painful to change my main. Just try all other rangers and only then choose. GL bro

Stop suggesting other classes in these Ranger threads. These threads are about Rangers, not what class you think should replace them or “does a better job with a ranged weapon”.

So sick and tired of reading the word “warrior” in a Ranger thread.

One serious issue with this game

1. Representing isn’t bad at all.. it’s good to have options. Maybe you should take a different approach and ask yourself “What’s wrong with my guild, why aren’t they representing?” and expand on that. People seem to like the three day guild bonuses for magic find and such, maybe you should invest in those. Also, would you prefer guild hopping? I wouldn’t.

2. There are plenty of semi-/hardcore PvE players that simply won’t PUG. People like efficiency (key term here), organization, and doing what ever it takes to lessen the grind. Guilds seem to provide that. Also, there has been problems with PUGs kicking people before the last boss. You shouldn’t have that problem with a guild.

3. What? You’re allowed to have your own opinion, that’s fine. A lot of people use guilds as a social hub.. to make friends and to form a community.

Instead of complaining about guilds, maybe you could provide some suggestions as to how you would better guilds as whole.

Well said.

Odd. Media companies make money from good reviews.

((also, if I was sent a free copy (copies!) of GW2 and a bunch of cool promotional stuff from Anet and NCSoft, I’d love the game, too.))

Odd. User reviews don’t make any money and still give GW2 a 9.

Odd. Polls are always honest reflections of the majority… o.O

And, that “user review” section is controlled by the company that owns the website. Not “the community”.

I am NOT a GW2 hater. Stop reacting like I am. I simply support the idea that if the community isn’t pleased that it will impact the lifeblood of the game. Simple. If there is any negative impressions out there they need to be dealt with. And, it can only be done in ONE way: stop the negative comments. Now, THAT can be done in many ways. TWO MAIN WAYS ARE: change the “bad” things about the game so people stop thinking negative things OR just stop the negative comments. What I am trying to say is, “just stopping the comments won’t save the game. only fixing ‘the bad’ will…”

So you’re saying that ANet is the only one that pays review sites? Yeah, I’m sure that’s totally true.

Did I say that? Please quote me if I did. I’d love to read it (for the first time).

You missed the point: don’t give too much weight to a review from a company that has a vested interest in giving good reviews. Make YOUR OWN choice.

Of course you didn’t say it, but you implied it. No I didn’t miss the point, if you notice, there is an official MMORPG.com Review, and then a “User’s Review” section just below it. The ratings on that list come from the user reviews, not the official review.

I did not imply it. If I meant it, I would have said it.

And, yes, you missed the point. Otherwise, you still wouldn’t be pointing at OTHER PEOPLE’S reviews…

Do YOU like the game? That should be enough, no?

Have you ever considered that the game doesn’t appeals to them because it is trying to do something different from the other MMOs out there? And that this may be the one reason why it appeals to you, me and many others that are actually enjoying the game?

So if they change the game to appeal to those that don’t like it they may end up ruining it for us who actually enjoy it.

There will always be people who like things. And others who do not. I dislike Red Bull. But others enjoy the hell out of it. I feel the same way about sausage pizza. And other people can’t stop eating it. I hate deep dish, too.

Thankfully, the pizzeria offers other toppings and crust choices… See the point?

Don’t worry about what “other” people think. Play the game when it’s fun. Stop when it’s not. Do your own thing.

An MMO’s lifeblood is what “other” people think. You can’t just stick your head in the sand on this one. I know that we’d all like to think that trick will work. But bottom line is if the community isn’t there, then there won’t be anyone to play with. Which is the entire point of an MMO.

Someone saying that they read someone else say GW2 sucks doesn’t mean the game is dying. It doesn’t really mean anything other than someone said someone else said something that simply doesn’t matter.

If someone has a criticism about GW2 then they can post it constructively and we can talk about it. I don’t see any way of debating “GW2 sucks” or any reason to worry about it. People say WoW sucks all the time.

Then do us who enjoy the game a favor and log off the forums and find something else to do please. If you feel your negative posts, comments, and rants will somehow fix life for you then your sadly mistaken. Its very selfish imo. To come on here and try to persuad others to not buy the game or have a good time just because your not able to..so please go find somewhere else to vent your negative point of views. I don’t see the objective to any thing other than trying to offer suggestions to anet to fix problems instead of (this game will and or has failed, no end game etc,)

Somone posted a true valid pointand I can’t remember who. People who are having fun don’t have time to come on here and complain and those who do should goto suggestion forums and give them.

Do us a favor and keep your own “negative comments to yourself”. As if telling us our posts and rants our negative will make them stop or help the community out. Hey, Kettle. Meet Pot.

Also… “you are” or “you’re”.

Just because you don’t like the opinion of someone else doesn’t give you the right to hate on them. Unless you’re a member of the UN and have a military.

This is a chicken vs the egg debate.

Even the worst naysayer in the world doesn’t hate on the things he loves.

There is no such thing as negative unless you’re part of an equation. Grow up.

Incorrect.

This game needs more CHALLENGE. It does not need to be “harder”.

Hard is that annoying thing you don’t EVER want to do again. Challenge is fun; Hard is not fun.

Challenge is two teams in the World Series.
Hard is 8 year olds in tee-ball vs. 2011 WS Champs.

More Challenge; Less Hard.

Also, I DO NOT WANT THE GAME TO BE CHANGED BECAUSE OF BOTS. They should not effect my economy OR my gameplay.

“Why is this task so annoyingly hard??”

@capnflummox:
I agree with you that saving names for each individual pet might not be a bug but the game does save petnames. If the game wouldn’t save petnames then we wouldn’t be able to rename pets and petnames would revert immediately to it’s original name the moment you press “Accept” when trying to rename a pet.

… your semantics on the word “save” are sketchy. What is in place now is nothing more than a “clipboard” form of saving the name. When you swap a pet, the name goes away.

There is no save feature for the pet names.

shennanigans. i’m calling it on this one…

sure the game is great and all that. but it is also not-so-great.

rose colored glasses you have…

Am I bored?

Nope. But it is really beside the point. I have yet to try everything out. There is a lot of content and I have been taking my time a bit and trying my hardest to get into the storyline. However, I am not yet at lvl 80 (lvl 74 Ranger here) and I have no concept of the end-game GW2 has to offer as of this time. My focus is PVE, so that will have to hold up for me to remain entertained.

Am I annoyed at the bugs?

Absolutely I am. However, I am aware of the gargantuan effort that needs to go into a game like this. And that you cannot fully test a system until it is released to the masses. I get that. But there are also some oversights (not bugs) that should not have happened in a game that started development in 2007 (or before!).

Am I annoyed by the botters?

Ironically, I am MORE annoyed by people being concerned with botters than the actual botters themselves. Botters do not effect me at all. This is my opinion, and you can feel free to discuss this with me. But I am not going to go into detail in this post.

Am I annoyed by the hackers?

As I do not PVP, the short answer is: no.

The Economy?

If by “economy” you mean “the cost of Gems/Gold”, then the answer is: no. I have no plans to pay OOG money for IG content at this time. But, I would down the road a bit. But I want to discuss this a bit further.

For the short-term player, someone who plans to play this either on-and-off over a long period of time or just play it for a few months, the lack of a subscription fee is very nice. Having said that, a long term player will find it advantageous to purchase some “upgrades”, such as more bank and bag slots.

Now, I don’t think there is enough available bag/bank slots on an account to purchase (optionally) that will ever compare to what it would cost me to play a $15/month game for a year. Especially since I can use IGC (in-game currency) to obtain those upgrades. But, at the same time, a short-term player might find it a bit frustrating to deal with a “nerfed account”. Some might find it a bit inconvenient to have to deal with either paying OOGC or “farming” IGC just to get an additional bag/bank slot. Those people might prefer a monthly fee. Especially since (as of now) you may or may not have access to the BLTP (Black Lion Trading Post) to quickly get Gems to purchase those little niceties other games “give you for free”.

This is literally a situation of “some people pay the neighbor to mow the lawn; and other people do it themselves”. Some people might just want that fee to alleviate the headaches of having to log into each character to upgrade their banks and bags and other things. I know I get frustrated when I log into an alt that doesn’t have the extra 2 bag slots that my main does.

I’ll admit, sometimes I come across a way point and I’m like, “WTF is a way point here??”

Fewer way points isn’t a bad idea. And I’d like to see some other changes.

All way points should be in some form of base or town or city. And this also means there should be some type of merchant and some type of repair ability by EVERY way point.

Fewer way points; more merchants and repair.

Repair is such a big deal in this game I can’t understand why there are not more places to repair.

capnflummox.3082

Alot of people here came to GW2 for the WvW endgame, basically anyone who played MMos bfore WoW.

Nope. (also, a lot is 2 words)

A lot of players don’t give a whisker about “PvP”. Simply because it is something that will NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER (get it now) BE BALANCED. Ever. Never gonna happen.

MY endgame is going to be based on PVE elements. And if Anet can’t (or refuses) to deliver, I’ll probably stop playing. No hard feelings from me towards Anet if they choose to not focus on PVE. I’ll just move onto something else.

And, no. I do NOT want to go play Skyrim™ or some other “offline” or “single player” game. I like to interact with other people in a PERSISTENT WORLD environment. I already have many single player adventure/rpg games installed on my computer. But I prefer MMOs for the same reason I play tabletop board games and pen-n-paper rpgs at home.

Every MMO I’ve been in that has tried that has failed miserably at it. It always ends up being an event that everyone shows up to, causing massive lag, and a complete zerg fest, while the GM spawns waves of mobs.

Then you have people who missed the event, basically crying on the forums because they didn’t know about the event 1 week in advance.

I think the way dynamic events work now is pretty good, they’re just a bit too predictable. If they alternated which dynamic events were active in maps every few days, it would make it feel like things are changing.

doesn’t mean it cannot be done. THOSE MMOs did it wrong.

and if they had more of these events, then maybe it would be such a “ZOMG!!!!1 ZERG-ZE-EVENT!!!!1”

If a Pokémon game on a Gameboy Color from 20 years ago could handle 151 custom names, then surely an MMO from 2012 can do with 50…

50 times however many people are playing Rangers.

Second, you may have missed my sarcasm in the last post, but coding isn’t something you can sit down and do in 10 minutes. It takes time and effort, plus testing and all that other hullabaloo.

Not to mention the fact that there are probably HUNDREDS of other bugs that need to be fixed before a minor cosmetic issue.

Development started in 2007.

When they coded the ability to change the name, they should have coded the ability to save the name. This is not a debate of how much data it takes up vs. how many Rangers are on each server. Buy one 1TB drive per server and there you go. Enough space to hold millions of pet names. Ironically, a 1TB drive costs roughly the same as the game did.

“But they use RAID 5 and would need 3 1TB drives!!!!!1”

Okay.

Imagine if Word didn’t come with a save feature.

This is the dumbest debate in the world. I will restate for the blind and ignorant:

The save feature should have been coded at the same time the naming feature was coded. Fin. Period. Door is to your left…

PVE vs PVP

This is just something I need to get off my chest. I’d also like to hear some other opinions.

I’m sick and tired of things being changed (or “balanced”) for PVP that has impacts on stuff for PVE.

Is there a way to keep these separate at all?

I know it would probably be a significant investment of time and energy to keep these things totally separate. But I can always hope, right?

Just getting frustrated that changes get made to the game based on PVP and it doesn’t seem to matter one bit how those changes impact the people who wish to play the game without the personal conflict of PVP.

I wish there wasn’t any PVP. I don’t believe you can EVER balance any type of class-based (read: profession-based) game. And the changes sometimes really mess up PVE.

If you want to play class-based PVP, go play League of Legends. That IS a PVP game. There is NO PVE in that game what-so-ever. (Now, if you want something far more exotic than class-based PVP, go play EVE Online. Or World of Tanks. These “RPGs” don’t have, and can never have, balanced PVP. Fin.)

Sorry for the rant. I’m just upset that so much focus is put into the aspect of the game for PVP and it ends up screwing over PVE most times.

PVP will never be balanced. Period. Some scriptkiddie will always find that one thing to do or that one class/skill that is OP.

Secondly, if you are constantly using the pet in slot 2 did you ever consider putting it in slot 1 instead? It wouldn’t stop it unstowing from fall damage, etc but at least the pet that you actually use would come out instead of the bear.

jesus christ, pal.

okay, troll. i’ll bite…

Yes, it has occurred to me that I will have to do illogical actions to lower the frustration level by 4.815162342% since the mechanics are either sloppy or broken.

But just so you can be educated and finally “get it”, I will treat you with the Reason.

Pet 1 is set to “Bear” or a “tanking pet”.
Pet 2 is set to “Moa” or a “dps pet”.

Since you seem to be struggling I’ll try and cover all the bases by saying: "I use the pet in slot 1 for soloing and/or harder monsters/encounters. And I use slot 2 for dungeons/party and/or easier monsters/encounters.

Make sense now, troll?

Auto-attacking

After this latest patch I have noticed that I will continue to auto-attack a mob even after I deselect it as a target. No matter what I do, I still end up attacking a target even when I have nothing selected.

This is on my Ranger and I am not sure if other professions have this. Can someone test this on their non-Ranger character?

I accidentally clicked a mob from super far away when I was on top of a hill. I unselected it and started moving along my pathway. As I got closer to the mob, I started attacking it even though I had no target. Luckily I was attacking through a big rock and didn’t hit the target because it was a world boss and I was all alone.

I moved out of range to gather some herbs and trees and minerals and on the way back I came into range again and started attacking this mob again…

Anyone confirm this?

Pets randomly won't attack?

confirmed.

for no reason they just won’t attack at all. no elevation tricks. no object tricks. just won’t attack a mob on even ground.

“Also for pets people have been asking for ability to permanently stow pets, since a slight fall damage while traveling or something will pop the pet out again but that is still debatable”

Not debatable. This absolutely needs to be implemented.

The DEBATE is whether to give a boost/buff when the pet is stowed.

For the Record: I could care less about a boost/buff when the pet is stowed. In fact, right now I’d take a damage reduction if I could cage my pet.

Stop confusing the name “Ranger” with the word “range”. Do a tiny bit of research on this class before spewing.

Ranger is a “fighter” class. Not a “uses ranged weapons” class.

Perma-stow – sure. Low priority change though as you can just follow the advice of this thread and have a small pet (like a bird) set to passive in the meantime.

Boost your stats for not having pet – no. The reasons have been covered throughout this thread.

Not really an option when you start investigating some of the bugs the pet mechanics have.

You have two “active pets”. We’ll call them AP1 and AP2. When you have AP1 out and hit F4 (swap) your AP2 pet becomes active; and vice versa. You also have two aquatic based pet slots. For purposes of this discussion we don’t have to go into too much details about this. But everything else is basically the same; you have two aquatic slots for these also.

Scenario 1:

AP1 is set to Brown Bear and AP2 is set to Raven.

Since I can’t perma-stow my pet, I’ll keep the Raven active because it causes the least amount of rage when not doing combat related tasks.

I’m walking along just trying to get from point A to point B. The path I take is along a road for the most part, only deviating where I need to avoid combat because I just want to get to that next waypoint so I can easily return later or spawn after a death.

Up ahead is a town. Currently it’s controlled by “the enemy” and there is a short bridge over a small stream of water. So I turn off the main road to avoid the enemies. While crossing the stream, there is one spot just deep enough to trigger me going into the aquatic mode. My Raven “turns into” my Shark pet (because that is the pet I have set to Aquatic AP1) for a few seconds and then I dip back out of the water.

Now my Brown Bear is out and active.

Wait… Didn’t I have my Raven as active pet? I thought I did. Weird. Well, let’s just swap back to the Raven because the Brown Bear is just annoying when not in combat. Oh, what’s this?! There is a countdown timer on the swap pet (and stow pet!) abilities. Hmmm…

Scenario 2:

AP1 = Brown Bear; AP2 = Blue Moa.

I’m wandering around trying to do some map completion stuff. Currently, the Blue Moa is active pet (slot AP2). I am about to do a jumping puzzle. The last one I did taught me that it is best to stow my pet because he ends up just getting in the way. So, I stow my pet and start the jumping. A few jumps in I fall off and hit the ground taking a few points of health.

And my pet pops out. But not the Blue Moa, which is the pet I had set to active before I stowed it. No. The Brown Bear in slot AP1.

Well, I’ll just stow the pet and get back to the jumping puzzle. Oh wait… There is a countdown timer on the stow command. And the swap command. And I can’t switch the Active Pets to other animals (like a Raven) because the timer is also active for this ability. Great.

Scenario 3:

This is just going to be me stating that you can’t check your pet stats and abilities and other characteristics using the management screen without swapping pets. Which triggers the shared countdown timer for stow, swap, and changing the AP1/AP2 slots.

This makes it frustrating to do anything with the pet management screen.

Look, guys. We all know it’s just a “few seconds” (it’s actually 30 or 45 seconds; depending on… well, I’m not sure what it depends on) and it shouldn’t be that big of a deal. But, during the 5th “30 second countdown timer” while trying to read and figure out “pet stuff”, one starts to wonder: How in the name of all that is Holy did this happen?

Why is there a countdown timer for these abilities?
Ok, maybe it’s combat. Then, why does the timer trigger when not in combat?
Why does going into water trigger my pet to become active when I have manually selected to have my pet stowed?
And, why does it trigger the AP1 even though I had AP2 set to the active pet?
Why does the pet ignore my Command (capitalized for emphasis) to “stay in the cage” when I am in combat?
Why does taking Fall Damage trigger my pet like combat does?
Why is there no key bind preset for Stow/Activate? Why is there no manual option to set a key bind for this in options?
Why was it programmed this way?

These are just some of the things bouncing around in our heads during the 309th time we have to wait for the timer to run down.

===

Pet’s should be able to be permanently stowed. Period. And I do NOT wish for a “buff” when stowed. In fact, I am AGAINST that opinion outright.

I firmly believe that the pet should be a part of the DPS for the class.
I am firmly against the idea of a “pet-less ranger” in regards to COMBAT.
Rangers should lose DPS without their pet out. Period.

And this should be our OPTION. Our CHOICE.

These are not “low priority changes” like you tried to state. The pet “is a big part of our class” and should be a very high priority. Very high. Like, Tommy Chong high.

Please fix these issues with the pet mechanics.

Just gonna say this.

The Ranger’s class symbol is a paw print.
The Ranger’s forum symbol is a paw print.
The Ranger is the only class that has a permanent pet (Making them unique over other classes who can use “pets”; Our pets do not eat up our utility slots)
The Ranger’s class question is about your first PET.
Every trait line has benefits for your pets.
You cannot perm stow your pets.
Our pets give us access to many boons and conditions
Nearly every image of a ranger includes their pets.

I’m just gonna say: Ranger is THE pet class. So giving The pet class the option to go petless just feels wrong from so many points. Don’t like pets? Don’t roll the class. No other class can get 1200 range? False. Rifle Warriors have decent damage and 1200 range. The whole point of the ranger class is their pet. Other classes don’t rely as much on their mechanics? Well, that’s what makes the ranger different. When you pick a ranger you are choosing to pick a two-unit character.

You want a master of ranged damage? Roll a warrior huntsman.

About 47.93% correct.

And irregardless of all your points, as a Master of Animal Control, I would like to stow my pet for NON-COMBAT reasons.

Warriors do not have the same abilities that a Ranger does. Stop with your completely trolling comment of “roll a longbow warrior”. Even if you (think you) are right, you’re missing the point of the discussion which is about problems with the Ranger class. Not (your opinion) that people should roll a different class.

Before you spit your milk all over I’ll clarify MY standpoint on the perma-stow ability:

I SIMPLY WANT THE ABILITY TO PUT THE PET AWAY FOR NON-COMBAT PURPOSES.

Any moron with a dog can put it in a cage. Why can’t I ??
