There’s a problem when your little April Fools holiday event is more fun than your core game. If nothing else Super Adventure Box has shown me that Guild Wars 2 is seriously lacking in the fun department.
There are major major issues with this game and it seems as if ArenaNet isn’t interested in fixing the core game and making it enjoyable. Don’t get me wrong I think Super Adventure Box is genius but as I was playing through it the whole time I was thinking this is more fun than I’ve had in GW2 since the first couple of days past launch.
GW2 becomes very boring once you reach cap and that NEEDS to be addressed immediately.

The most troubling thing with this whole culling fix is an admission by the devs that they released a game that was not ready and or fully tested.
This whole culling system should have been figured out and resolved well before release. Now they are hinting that system requirements and or system performance might be different (lower).
How could this problem not have been noticed before release?
In the long term the lack of the trinity makes instances and any other group play boring and shallow to say the least.
People aren’t forced to co operate and work together or strategize like in other mmo’s that we’ve all played in the past.
If you want people to continue playing this game for any length of time you need to bring back the trinity Anet.
Playing Skyrim felt like walking through a wax museum.
Both times I received an email from ArenaNet asking me to approve or deny the log in attempt. They should know at this point that any log in attempt from that area or IP address are hacking attempts.
What about players from China?
Are they supposed to be autobanned each time they change IP?
Why would players from China be playing on US servers for one thing and secondly these hack attempts seem to be coming from the exact same city and region. It’s pretty obvious that they’re hackers.
They might have something on you’re PC giving them your password, like a key logger. If you’re changing it and they still have it with in a month or two it won’t matter if you change it. You need to find what they have on you’re PC and clean it out.
Thanks for the suggestion/advice but I know that that’s not how they’re accessing my passwords. I use a Mac for one which makes me less susceptible to key loggers etc and also I have a new hard drive and fresh install of OSX since the first hack.
Somehow these hackers are gaining access to ArenaNets servers. Something needs to be done.
Ok, this is getting ridiculous. Hackers have attempted to gain access to my account twice now in the past 2 months. Both log in attempts were from S h i z u i s h a n China.
Both times I received an email from ArenaNet asking me to approve or deny the log in attempt. They should know at this point that any log in attempt from that area or IP address are hacking attempts.
Anyone else had log in attempts from this same city/area? Following is the origination information for the attempt.
Address: 222.75.193.118
City: S h i z u i s h a n
Region: 21
Country: CN
P.S. Yes, I did change my password both times after the attempts.

Colin saying “the population is increasing” isn’t data.
Even if Anet posted server statistics you would say they are made up.
Because you want to believe in what you believe, regardless of all evidence pointing against your claims.
If I was Colin and saw your post I would file you a lawsuit for defamation and send to you to beg in the streets, but he hasn’t done so, so maybe he’s not as bad as you think.ArenaNet needs to very quickly remedy the fact that this game has little to do at level cap (aside from grinding for cosmetic upgrades). They also should tweak the combat/classes to support the trinity system. Every class should be able to spec as healer, tank or dps simply by switching which weapon they are using.
That’s basically a guaranteed way to lose the majority of the playerbase.
Luckily you don’t work for Anet.
ArenaNet knows that they stand to gain A LOT more players than they would lose. There are probably 14 million plus players that prefer an MMO that has a gear treadmill, trinity and raiding system. There are very few that dislike those things. WoW has around 10 million and when you combine all the other MMO’s populations that have raiding, gear treadmills and the trinity system (which is like every other MMO on the market aside from GW2) you’ve reached at least 14 million.
Upset a percentage of the 1 million or so people currently playing this game to appeal to the larger majority of those other 14 million people? Sounds like a very VERY good gamble to me profitability wise and ArenaNet is thinking about that I’m sure.
I’d also like to add that Guild Wars 2 being “discounted” 30 percent this weekend is a huge sign that the game isn’t doing that well.
Simple fact is you don’t discount things that don’t need to be. If the game was still selling well and the active population was high then ArenaNet would not need to discount the game. The fact that they are shows that they are desperately trying to bring in new players and revitalize the game.
That should be your biggest clue that things aren’t going that well for this game right now.
(edited by diabluz.2860)
The issue is that this game appears to be losing players over time instead of gaining them. WoW was constantly gaining people for the first 5-6 years.
ArenaNet needs to very quickly remedy the fact that this game has little to do at level cap (aside from grinding for cosmetic upgrades). They also should tweak the combat/classes to support the trinity system. Every class should be able to spec as healer, tank or dps simply by switching which weapon they are using.
The server you play on determines your open world PvE experience to a large degree. I’m on Tarnished Coast and every zone is populated from starter areas to Cursed Shore farming areas. Try guesting on TC and check it out.
Guesting is not the ultimate solution as ideally it should be around, well, guesting, playing with friends and the like. Right now, it’s a solution to the dead server problem. It’s natural for the population to peak and decline somewhat in a new MMO. However, their introduction of vertical progression in the 11/15 patch emptied the open world on my original server. It was like in one day there was no one around anymore outside LA. I did two server transfers before landing on TC which I am very happy with.
This is not true. The time when this game lost the most players is the month or two following release. People that came to GW2 expecting a WoW competitor started realizing this game was not a gear treadmill and didn’t have raiding so they started leaving in droves. We are now left with the small percentage of the mmo community that doesn’t need raiding or a gear treadmill in their MMO’s.
This game will never compete with the BIG MMO’s out there that have raids and gear treadmills. Are there enough gamers in the MMO community that don’t mind the absence of raids, the gear treadmill and the trinity? I don’t know as only ArenaNet knows how many people they need to be playing this game and spending money in the gem shop to make it a profitable success.
If this game ever wants to achieve massive major success they would have to institute a gear treadmill, raiding and the trinity system. This game is a niche MMO as it stands.
you can buy siege with badges which are free if you put the work in, and as Bursts said you get it out of the jump puzzles.
repairs are repairs.. do your best not to die and you won’t have to repair as much. (maybe add the option to badge repair so there is a “free” option)
There are bigger problems then siege cost and repair issues that kill WvW for folks.
Most would rather use their badges for gear instead of blowing them on siege.
Who wants to have to keep repeating jump puzzles just to get siege? We go into WvW because we want player vs player action not a mechanically poor version of Super Mario.
Reality is everyone is going to die a lot in WvW unless you travel in a huge zerg the entire time.
I realize that you should be able to fight in a 1v1. That’s what I realize. If you can’t then stay in your zerg.
I’ve had several 1 on 1’s in WvW but generally people run in packs in WvW so if you’re running around solo you’re asking for insta death.
Usually the only stragglers you see in WvW are people that are there for map completion etc.
My main issue is the tendency for everyone to run away from a 1v1 until they can find some buddies.
You do realize don’t you that WvW is not intended to be a 1 on 1 pvp style game? It’s a team based pvp mode.
SPVP is more your style I think.
(edited by diabluz.2860)
1. Siege equipment is too expensive. People hold back from using siege too often because of the high cost and high probability it will be destroyed or abandoned shortly thereafter.
2. Repairs should be free while in WvW. Major design flaw when you lose more money in WvW than you gain.
These are just two of the major issues with WvW as is. If ArenaNet ever wants this game to reach it’s potential they need to fix these issues asap.
This should be sticky’d great question and excellent answers. So useful.
Don’t you think that if it were this simple to fix the issues with the Cider client it would have already been done?
If the camera spinning is the same camera spinning problem I get then pressing enter to go to the chat window then click on the main screen or enter again to come out of the chat window usually clears that for me.
I’ve found that when the camera starts spinning (or when my character starts running around in circles), tapping the direction key (the w,a,s,d direction keys, mind) that the spinning is moving in stops it handily. So far, it works every time.
I will try that in the interim. I know a friend that has an issue with it constantly but I believe it’s because he’s a clicker so he uses the mouse cursor more than I do. It seems like it’s more likely to happen the more you point and click in the game. Our only resolution for when it happened was to log out of the client and back in.
Let’s get into some details, shall we?
1. world map lag
2. camera issues where the camera goes crazy and starts spinning uncontrollably
3. audio gets distorted and makes loud thumping sounds etc
4. weird streaks coming from light sources and shadows
5. significantly lower frame rates than on the Windows version
6. no high texture option1. Never had that issue. Can you be a bit more descriptive? What exactly happens? When does it happen? What did you try so far to avoid it?
2. Faintly remember that one right after launch of the Mac beta. Never occured since I changed the camera sensitivity settings.
3. Not a Mac-specific problem
4. Not a Mac-specific problem
5. Technical limitation due to Cider port.
6. Not a Mac-specific problem
No problem
1. When you attempt to use the world map (by hitting M) and then attempt to drag the world map around using your cursor the map doesn’t move until 5 seconds later or so and then sometimes doesn’t at all. It’s like the map is hanging up or something, it’s a common problem as stated on these forums. I’m far from the first person to mention it.
2. The camera spinning out of control happens frequently as well and once again I’m far from the first person to report this.
3. Wasn’t aware that this was an issue with the Windows client as well.
4. Once again wasn’t aware of this issue on the Windows client because I played it for the first few weeks and never experienced it.
5. Exactly my point. We are paying the same full price for this game as the Windows version so why should we get an inferior product for the same price? Why should we receive inferior customer support or tech support? No one from ArenaNet has posted in this forum in over 2 months now yet the Windows tech support forum has been addressed and assisted.
6. Unless I was missing something I was able to select high textures on the Windows client, that is not an option on the Mac client.
I’m simply stating here that we are getting an inferior product for the same price because they chose to give us a Cider port which is known to have major technical issues. This has been tried by other devs for other games and it’s always the same story. Tons of technical issues that never get addressed.
Fresh install on my iMac and haven’t crashed once ever.
I really think deleting everything including the application support folder (especially the application support folder and MANUALLY modifying the config file in the application support folder) should solve any issue other than you just having poor system tech specs.
The crashes aren’t the only issue people have with the Mac beta, you’re aware of that right?
1. world map lag
2. camera issues where the camera goes crazy and starts spinning uncontrollably
3. audio gets distorted and makes loud thumping sounds etc
4. weird streaks coming from light sources and shadows
5. significantly lower frame rates than on the Windows version
6. no high texture option
Update***
Below is the support ticket I submitted and following is the response I just received. I plan to reply to the email for further clarification of the issues we’ve been having and ask if they can provide a status on fixes or if this could be escalated further.
I as well as many others in the Mac Technical Support forum have been posting about issues we are consistently having with the client yet we are getting no responses from anyone at ArenaNet. We have paid good money to play your game and deserve more attention than what we are getting.
The issues we are having include but are not limited to
1. random crashes
2. map lag (the world map is not able to be scrolled around without huge delays/freezes).
3. strange audio problems where the audio gets all distorted and very loud and makes popping/thumping sounds at random.
4. Very bad camera control issues where the camera just begins spinning very rapidly (only fixed by closing the client and restarting).
5. Very poor framerates making the game close to unplayable in many cases.
I have purchased like 4 or 5 copies of this game for friends now and have been one of your largest most supportive fans but this is really putting a very bad taste in my mouth. The fact that it’s been over 2 months since we’ve had any updates from anyone at ArenaNet on the issues with the Mac client is very poor customer service. We’ve all paid good money to you for your product and we have every right to expect that we should be able to play it and be informed of fixes or what is being worked on to better the client. We deserve the same amount of attention and respect the Windows community is getting as we paid the same price for this game as them.
Their response:
Hello,
Thank you for providing us with that information.
I would like for you to delete both the local.dat and .plist files associated with your Guild Wars 2 instillation. You can do this by following the instructions below.
Please follow the steps below to locate and delete the local.dat for Guild Wars 2.
1 Click on the “Finder” icon located in your dock or the desktop of your computer to make “Finder” the active program in the finder menu bar.

Once both files are moved to the trash, please empty the trash and restart your computer.
After your computer has restarted please try to run Guild Wars 2 again.
Let me know if you need further assistance.

I will follow his suggestions which I believe are just general troubleshooting steps for any Mac application. I don’t expect any of these steps to address our issues but I will post here after doing so with any benefit I see.
(edited by diabluz.2860)
I haven had no problems either but I had to manually modify my config.ini file so that the game can “see” my actual amount of video card ram see attachment:
Why do you keep posting that? You’re giving people misleading information. Modifying that has no effect on performance or fps.
What are we unhappy about exactly? I’m much happier with the mac version than the PC version. Both crash occasionally but the mac version is a bit more stable and loads faster for me. The crashing needs fixed for both clients though.
You must be playing a different Mac client than the rest of the community because the Mac beta has worse framerates, worse graphical performance, no high textures, audio issues, major camera issues, world map lag making the map unusable and frequent crashing that the Windows version doesn’t suffer from.
I’d like to add that these issues have been present since launch over three months ago, we haven’t received a patch or an update from devs in almost 3 months now.
Do you work for ArenaNet or something?
(edited by diabluz.2860)
I just submitted a ticket myself and will update here as soon as I receive a response from the support team.
Since we seem to be getting ignored here on the forums I suggest we all submit a ticket in the support section to try and get some answers/resolution.
Please post any responses you get from the support team here for the rest of the community. Thanks everyone
Unfortunately you have to modify the config.ini file if you have more than 256 megabytes of video ram since that is the default setting see attachment.
I’d like to add though that modifying the config.ini file makes no difference at all in performance. If you don’t believe me try switching it back to 256 and taking screenshots in Lions Arch near the Mystic Forge. There is no difference at all in fps.
Unfortunately you have to modify the config.ini file if you have more than 256 megabytes of video ram since that is the default setting see attachment.
Could you post a screenshot of your graphics options menu with the fps counter in the lower right standing in Lions Arch right near the Mystic Forge? I’ve been thinking about getting one of those new iMacs or just waiting till the new Mac Pros come out but would like to see how much better performance you get on that iMac vs the one I currently have.
I’ve created a thread in the general tech support thread in hopes that we can get a response there. The devs still seem to be active in that thread unlike here where we’re obviously forgotten or being ignored. :https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/mac/3-months-and-still-the-same-bugs/first#post1100958
I’m posting this here because the Mac thread has been ignored for over 2 months now. We’ve seen NO client updates in over 2 months and haven’t gotten any help from ArenaNet in over 2 months.
No one from ArenaNet has responded to any of the threads in the Mac support forum and we are plagued with a lot more bugs and issues than the Windows version.
Here is just one of the threads addressing the multitude of issues plaguing the Mac community :https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/mac/3-months-and-still-the-same-bugs/first#post1100958 If your browse the thread you’ll notice there haven’t been any updates to the client or from the devs in over 2 months now.
Can we PLEASE get a response as to what is going on with the Mac client? We Mac users have paid the same amount for the game as Windows users and we deserve the same amount of respect and attention. We are being ignored and this is VERY bad customer service.
(edited by diabluz.2860)
Since this game uses a wrapper, the optimizations and work will go into the Window’s build first, with the Mac version getting that version to optimize from. Anet isn’t likely wanting to have two builds of the game (barring some minor differences I imagine), so they’ll have to go with Window’s first. They have fixed plenty of bugs on the Window’s client, and I’m sure that they are working on getting those on OS X fixed. In some ways, bug fixing with a port is harder than with a native client.
EDIT: For what it’s worth, I feel the pain of those still having issues. I’ve switched over entirely to Apple Computers (necessary for work), and my iMac struggles to get reasonable frame rates. It is playable for the most part luckily.
Well until they make a native Mac client I wont be recommending this game to any of my Mac friends. There’s just no excuse these days to not have both native Windows and Mac clients. We can all at least look forward to ESO which will have native Windows and Mac clients on day one.
But how much do they really fix on the PC side? It seems all of the fixes I’ve heard of them doing are with game content, not bugs in the application. All the bugs on the mac application probably stem from the different ways macs and PCs handle applications.
Most of the issues with the “Mac client” are due to the fact that it’s a cider wrapper. These issues can’t be fixed by patching the Windows client because the issues we are having on the Mac side are due to the Cider wrapper.
It gets really tiring when people say things like “they didn’t have to release it on the mac in the first place”. Sure, they didn’t, and they aren’t obligated to. But they also aren’t obligated to make any PC updates or world events or have 100% uptime or ban bots or let you keep all your in-game possessions every time you log out. Not one thing they do is required.
Everything goes back to making money – they make money if they can supply a good product. If they don’t have a good product, people don’t pay them. lack of updates and a poorly functioning platform is not a good product.
That said, I have relatively few complaints about the mac version. But I do know lots of other people do have problems that need to be addressed.
Of course, when I say “need”, I mean “If they want to have people continue to play and buy gems with money and recommend it to friends and make any additional sales”
Yeah, it’s a big huge cop out when people say they don’t have to release a Mac client. Like ArenaNet is doing us a favor by allowing us to buy their game? Lets remember here just who is doing whom a favor. We are the consumer, ArenaNet owes us for our dollar not the other way around.
We are getting a shoddy port and we are paying for that. There are many people that have bought GW2 knowing that they could play it on their Mac. Why should they have to suffer through the myriad of bugs and performance issues the Mac client has when they are paying the same price for the game? When a company sells a product or service that product or service needs to work properly and this product does not on the Mac.
I can’t recommend this game to my Mac friends (majority of my friends because I work in the design field) due to the poor performance. It’s even more disheartening that we rarely hear anything from the devs here in this thread. It’s like they just threw this port out there to grab some quick cash but they don’t really care about the quality of the experience we are getting.
Hmmm, I’ve never had that issue before. I’m using an iMac as well, previous generation and 10.8.2.
Is it still doing it? Have you tried resetting your permissions and logging out and back in again then restarting the patcher?
There have been no updates here on the status of the Mac beta or any of the “bugs” associated with it.
We still have major audio issues
We still have major camera issues
We still have major framerate/lag issues
We still have no high texture option
We still have serious map lag making using the map almost impossible
And yet we’ve heard nothing from the devs in this thread for 2 months now. I’m extremely frustrated with the lack of attention we are getting and for having to put up with a obviously inferior port even though we paid the same price for the game as Windows users.
This is really unacceptable. Could we PLEASE get an udpate on the status of the Mac client and the multitude of issues associated with it?
(edited by diabluz.2860)
YES!!! I’ve been saying this since like a week after release. There is no reason there should be a penalty (cost) to travel to a city while you’re out questing. I can see there being a fee to use waypoints out in the world map because that is a convenience feature.
Being able to travel to a city is not a convenience it is a necessity.
Yes, that machine will run the game, though not very good. Expect a framerate below 20 FPS with mid settings. Running it on Windows will get you up to 30FPS.
Your friend may want too look into upgrade options for the graphics card. MacPro users aren’t as restricted as other Apple users, with a few tweaks you can actually use a much more affordable standard PC card in a Mac Pro.
Thanks for the information. He’s going to be getting a new Mac Pro when the new ones come out next year so I don’t think he’s wanting to upgrade anything on the one he has currently.
Looks like I wont be getting him GW2 for Christmas.
Thanks again for the help.
He’s running Mountain Lion and they are quad core Intel Xeons.
I’ve been thinking about buying this game for a friend for Christmas but wanted to make sure it would run on his machine first.
Anyone know if GW2 would run on a 2008 Mac Pro with two 3.2 ghz 8 core intel processors, an nvidia 8800gt and 12 gigs of ram? If it will run on that machine anyone know how well it will run?
Thanks
For the refer a friend weekend? I tried asking in WoW and Diablo 3 and no one even wants an invite.
As soon as I asked I got several people saying “GW2 sucks” and a few others said it was ok but overall they were disappointed in GW2.
I still have 2 invites if anyone happens to be in the forums and would like an invite.
I said it earlier in this thread but I’ll say it again. This is about money. This game has lost a TON of people since release. It had strong sales at launch but a majority of those people left the game when they realized there was no gear treadmill and or raiding.
The fact of the matter is there’s more of them than there are of you. Them being the people that want raids like have been in the other MMO’s that have come out in the past 15 years. Most of the MMO community likes to have some form of power to chase. Those of you that say this is a symptom of WoW are wrong. MMO’s since they first began have always been about the carrot on a stick.
Reality is you can all threaten to leave and ArenaNet knows that if you really did like the game them adding pseudo raids isn’t going to make you leave if you really were enjoying the game. Even if some of you do leave and “quit”, the amount of people they gain by adding a gear treadmill will more than make up for those of you that do leave.
It’s all about money people. Every other MMO has had raiding and some kind of a gear treadmill. ArenaNet has realized that if they want to make money they need to offer what the masses want.
(edited by diabluz.2860)
Reality is the majority of MMO players want a gear treadmill. ArenaNet is in it to make money just like any other business. Adding “raiding” and a gear treadmill will make them more money so therefore they’re doing it.
They lost WAY too many people after launch and they know that to stay profitable and achieve the level of success they need, the game has to appeal to the majority of the MMO crowd that wants raiding and a gear treadmill.
Money talks, kittens walk.
A majority of people that bought the game at launch have already quit playing. Out of the 7 people I know of personally that bought the game at launch only 3 of us are still playing and 2 of us are playing rarely.
People don’t like that there’s no raiding in this game and they also don’t like that the instances are pretty lame and pointless. Most people that play MMO’s like raiding and or instances. They like the loot grind and this game just doesn’t have much to keep people coming back day after day.
This game sounded good on paper but in practice it doesn’t have that addictive draw that much of the MMO crowd desires.
You will get the best performance from bootcamp. Don’t bother with Parallels or any of that.
All you will need is to obviously install Windows under bootcamp and download install the game in Windows.
It sucks to have to run Windows on a Mac just to play a game but unfortunately since ArenaNet has given us a kitteny Cider port instead of a native client we’re left with no other option.
Erm, no.
There’s still a trinity, you’re attacking a straw man. (Competent) Dungeon runners organize players into dps, control and support. Those categories are broken down into condition/flat dps, hard/soft ccs and boons/heal support in single and aoe variants. You can access a plethora of GW2Codex builds to help understand how these are organized and work in practice. Just because the ‘holy’ trinity is gone and the jack of all trades approach is viable does not mean a trinity is existent.
Zhaitan is indefensible but cherry picking isn’t making your argument valid.
So, what you are trying to say is that ArenaNet failed at getting rid of the trinity and it still exists in this game? I think not.
You’re saying there is no trinity or roles yet there is? I’ve been in many groups in instances as have my guildies and they all have the same thing to say. Instances in this game blow.. It’s just wipe after wipe after wipe, run back and try again.
It’s lame and just uncontrolled chaos with no strategy.
Yeah, the issue is that there really aren’t any roles right now at all. All of the builds and weapons are too geared toward having no specific purpose or use.
The problem is this whole design mechanic of no trinity system. It simply just doesn’t make for a fun group mechanic in the long term.
There’s a huge flaw with the current gameplay mechanic in this game. The lack of the “trinity” system ruins the group mechanic for things like dungeons.
This will seriously hamper the long term success of Guild Wars 2.
Every instance/dungeon in this game turns into a chaotic mess with no aggro system and everyone spamming dps. Full party wipes are frequent because there is no aggro system or roles such as healer, tank etc.
This is also why dragons are so boring. The dragon essentially just stands there for 10 minutes while every wails dps on him then he dies and a chest is dropped.
The only way I see of fixing this is by actually making each class capable of being. heals tank or dps by buffing certain weapon choices to suit those roles for each class.
This needs to be changed if this game is ever going to have any longevity.
People that are all happy about Gw2’s lack of content are the anti-social soloers who wander around clicking <F> on vistas.
The rest of us simply want something are time to do after 80, GW2 isnt the only game around ya know..
If GW2 isn’t the only game around then why don’t you just go play one of those other games? You paid 60 bucks for this game and if you got a toon to 80 and got 100 percent completion and your fill of WvW then I’d say you more than got 60 bucks worth of entertainment out of this game.
Your girlfriend is obviously a keeper as it’s apparent she has excellent taste for selecting a Mac. You’d be wise to hold on to her!
No extra fee at all for the Mac beta or the Mac version when it comes out of beta status. The performance of the Mac version isn’t up to par with the Windows one but she won’t know the difference.
I’m on the same machine and you won’t think it runs well anymore once you get into WvW and into a zerg or participate in one of the bigger dynamic events. Just running around by yourself or with a friend you will get acceptable frame rates but go into Lions Arch and they will drop considerably.
Get into a zerg in WvW or a large dynamic event and it becomes a slideshow.
Question about textures: when will we get High settings?
in Account & Technical Support
Posted by: diabluz.2860
With performance being as poor as it is on medium/low textures can you imagine how bad it would be with high textures? That’s why I’m thinking we will never see them as long as there is no native Mac client.
