I should clarify a bit, what I intended to ask was individually as in character-wise that share the same setting as in within the same game or the same comic series or the same movie… for example, preference of character’s like Engineers (tech) versus Elementalists (magic), or if outside the GW universe, probably like comparing Gandalf (magic) vs Iron Man (Tech) and so on and so forth… I’m just trying to see if I can convince myself which archetype is cooler, if magical casters or non-magical, realistic types like engineers and warriors. It’s actually a silly way of trying to see which I’d prefer, my mesmer or my engineer based on aesthetics and cool factor lol. Feel free to ignore if topic is uninteresting from this point on
Magic (or powers) or Tech in fiction (most definitely including games), which do you prefer and why? You may use examples from known characters such as Iron Man or Wonder Woman to support your point and you may also not participate and think it’s a lame topic of conversation and hate me and never talk to me again cuz I’m lame and have head lice.
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!! Mork vom Ork!!!!
Is it viable to run without swiftness altogether? Cuz I could also use a different trait in alchemy altogether or even elsewhere? Also, can I assume then that the rest of the build is decent now?
Ok, I think I managed to apply the grand majority of the suggestions here, while still keeping in tune with the play style that I find most fitting to my taste, pretty please take a look: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fdAQFAUlUUptr9dxELseRCbBFqmCyNUCRtxPfgAkUA-TVSEABIcBAI4BAk0+DkqE8F1fcS5AAm8+QHAQK5CAcAw0BA-w
Thank you all SO VERY MUCH for your input, I’ll digest it all and work on it!
There you go, and thanks! Btw, you’re gonna find a really screwed up mix of gear in there which was my dumb attempt at balancing cuz I thought I was strong independant noob who don’t need no man and went ahead and purchased the gear I thought I needed. At least you’ll get a general sense of what I was trying to go for though, hopefully
Hi!
I decided to try a 4/4/0/0/6 gadgeteer rifle build that puts bleed/burning conditions on crit and gives me fury/might boons on gadget use. I mixed and matched gear to give me roughly 17.7k health, 1723 power, nearly constant 60%-80% crit chance (traits/some gadgets), 189% crit damage, 527 condition damage and 2453 armor. Are these numbers acceptable for non-formal PvE and WvW? Am I somewhere decent in terms of the attribute numbers? The purpose is to be somewhat hybrid, so that I can do decent power based damage with the crits themselves, and decent condition damage whenever those crits proc the on-hits. Am I being ridiculous? please help!!
I was playing on my engineer today and an actual dev joined in a group event with us. I know it was a dev because I said “fix engineer hobo sacks please” and he ignored me.

…There is no reason to be so dramatic about the issue…
I appreciate your input, both earlier with the legalities and currently in your opinion, but I must also express my opinion that perspective and the difference in points of view calls for empathy when it comes to assessing how someone should react to something, as the life experiences of each alters the way we respond to things, and what we’re sensitive about. Please don’t take this personally, as it is not intended as a riposte; clearly your intention was not one of attack, but I call for understanding and respect when it comes to the value we’re all entitled to assign to the things we go through in life.

This thread is INCREDIBLY depressing. I would have never imagined the enjoyment of a video game could be so divisive when it comes to sharing a great experience with the people you love, people that are your direct, immediate FAMILY. I’m deeply troubled at the implications of what I’ve read here, and shame on me for obviously not interpreting the ToS properly, as to me my immediate family, my household is equal to myself, and as such I hold them entitled to everything I am and own, as their happiness is my happiness. As I said, I’d been wanting to get a second computer so I could play along with my wife, and the solution to the question I posted has already been properly laid out, but learning what I have right now has definitely made me really, deeply hurt and sorry for what the gaming industry has apparently had to become. Thanks to all who’ve responded, I appreciate your time very much.
To ANet, please consider not punishing me for this, or taking action against my account, as I clearly had no idea what the implications of what was discussed truly were. I’m an old-school, couch multiplayer gamer, and as such I seem to have an old outlook on what gaming means in today’s world. I still remember from my World of Warcraft days how you’d be allowed to pay for a character transfer from one account to another as long as it was two accounts owned by the same person, and not seeing the option anywhere here prompted me to ask about it. Raging or making petty threats about how I won’t support your game anymore if you take any action against me is definitely not my style, and I do truly understand this game represents your livelihood and you’d do anything to preserve its integrity, so I won’t even consider that. In any case, I’ll attempt to scrounge up the money to get my wife an account and in the case I can’t convince her to start her character over, then because sharing is so important to me, I’ll take my leave and consider some other option we can share our fun in, which I cannot hold against you in any way, as your ToS are clear, fair and I agreed to them without proper interpretation; that’s on me.

I think I understand now, and I think it makes sense from a legal standpoint if any of us would make a legal claim or whatever, ArenaNET would be in their right to just say “we don’t allow this so we don’t have to get involved…”, but then does that mean that I’m actually doing something ILLEGAL if someone from my household plays my game?? Like will ArenaNET actually punish me or restrict my account or take action against me if my wife happens to play my video game?? Will I have to tell my wife “nope, you can’t play my game anymore, it’s illegal, the developers don’t allow you to play, sorry”??

Wait, so letting my wife play in my computer is illegal based on ToS?? It’s the same household, same computer, is this really so If it is that really blows my mind honestly… I can understand how it’d be illegal if I give my account to someone else on some other computer on some other house or whatever, but it’s my own wife in my own computer. Please someone clarify and confirm!

Hi!
I’d be interested in purchasing the game again for my wife since we now own a second computer so we can play together, but she already plays a character in my account, since we only had one computer, that is really high level. Is there any way to transfer that character into that second account so she doesn’t need to start over and we can actually play together? Thanks for any response in advance!
The post was too low on the forum’s front page, so I’m here to do my duty for great justice.
GIVE US THE OPTION TO TURN THEM OFF PLEASE, OR AT LEAST ACKNOWLEDGE US AND TELL US IT’S NOT GONNA HAPPEN…JUST TELL US SOMETHING!
Maybe we should attempt to rally support from the other profession forums, see if they’ll show some solidarity with our cause with a cross post in each one of their respective boards.
I honestly am quite disgusted at the lack of at least acknowledgement of the post from the dev team, even if to let us know it’s not gonna happen.
Is it reasonable or within the team’s capabilities to provide an update on this matter? This is a game which is heavily reliant on a very visceral art style meant to evoke the better sense of aesthetics within the MMO genre, so it stands to reason that to those of us who appreciate the aesthetics of this game will heavily base our enjoyment of the product in these matters that admittedly might seem small in the grand scheme of things.
1. Ranger
2. Elementalist
3. Mesmer
i would pay a lot for a race change
So would I. At least let us know if your opinion has changed on the matter, Anet.
Does anyone know if this has already been looked into?
put 15 into acrobatics and use dagger mainhand. If more evade is necessary use withdraw as the heal. That should be more than sufficient survivability for everything in the game.
I’m assuming you are talking strickly PvE btw, based on your initial post.
I actually wasn’t talking strickly PvE, and I apologize if I gave that impression; it’s possibly a side-effect of being noob that I may have misguided expectations about gear and weapon types and their relation to PvE or PvP. That said, I did go 10/0/30/0/30 stealing build cuz it seemed so much fun, and I’m rarely alone because I always play with RL friends and bountiful theft and thrill of the crime seem amazing. I figured I’d take the advantage of the condi damage for poisons and bleeds, shadow arts to take adv of my toughness and healing gear, and the trickery tree to compliment in synergy with the 10 points in deadly and hidden thief.
I know it’s quite likely I’m doing all the things wrong. But it feels I’m making lemonade with the lemons I got from my choice of armor :/
Thank you everyone for your responses!
I’ll definitely have to get other sets and I’ll do so while d/d I guess. Now, I was doing 25/30/0/0/15 but I’m feeling SUPER squishy (I did make my trinkets Settler’s to get toughness, healing and condi damage, which I’m sure will get critizised to hell and back but lesson learned, no?) Based on my kitteny gear (Rampager’s and Settler’s) I was wondering if I wouldn’t be better served with a different type of trait build. If so, what do you guys suggest? It seems I’m currently geared for a power, precision, toughness and healing mix with TONS of condition damage. And please please, remember I’m super noob and I look up to you guys for help, don’t shoot me down with flame or insults please. (also english is not my first language so pardon the mistakes)

Hi. Thief is my first and only 80, and since I leveled almost exclusively as d/d sb, I chose to craft myself a full set of rampager’s (With which I currently run d/d sb 25/30/0/0/15 cnd backstab).
Problem is, Im tempted to try other playstyles, likely involving S/ and I feel I might have shot myself in the foot with my choice of gear. Before any of you say “just get a second set” I do hear and understand it’s likely my only choice barring staying dd, but the process of getting a second set after all the trouble i went through for this one would greatly diminish my enjoyment of the game (not a fan of the grind).
Please help me figure out if I can still try other weapons and builds without changing out of this set of gear, or have I carved myself into a niche and would need to replace the set?
Thanks in advance.
Please, clarify for me (I seem to be an even bigger noob than I thought) where is this happening? like what server? I signed up above, but I’m in Yak’s Bend server and I don’t know if that’s where it’s at or what (is it somehow cross-server? Can that happen in this game? be a part of a guild in a diff server??)
Another interesting video could be THIS, from 2.35 to 4.20.
That segment was not only great to watch, it was really funny (captions). Really good play!
This is a superb idea, I want to join to learn, but the mere idea of having the guild tag next to my name would eventually be a sign of prestige of sorts, I would think. As if people reading your name and the tag would trust that this is a good thief or at least one that is in the proper process of learning if the movement get famous enough)
- In game name: Dunstan Mistwalker (Yak’s Bend server)
- What class(es) do you play as your secondary/tertiary: Guardian (I don’t really care for it much, I’ve come to realize thief is the only class I want to play)
- Are you applying as a teacher, or a student: Student
I’m still somewhat confused though, in what server would this be happening? (I’d imagine a chapter in each server that has enough interested people, please clarify)
People want a different MMO, one that isn’t like WoW or anything else out there. It is shown to them. They complain that it’s different.
I really, really hope the devs realize that this is a too vocal, but very small community of complainers, and that the rest of us lurkers or even non-forum dwellers really adore their bravery at breaking MMO conventions.
Just because you’re ignorant[…]
You defeated whatever semblance of respect you thought you deserved with that one remark.
Perhaps my problem is I’m not using any other build except 0/5/30/30/5 or trying out other play styles.
I think you answered your own question right there. But to further take the argument, I’d say that whenever I’m in a rut as such, I try to stay away from pre-tested builds, and instead try to come up with a whole original one on my own. The testing itself is fun and when I find something truly unique, the effects are devastating in PvP and exciting in PvE. Just my opinion
Thank you for your input. I also posted this question over at the GW2 subreddit and the general consensus seemed to strongly suggest Guardian. What’s your opinion on that?
Greetings:
I believe I’m not an alt-oholic by definition, although I’ve made several alts already; the reason being that I cannot seem to find or it isn’t immediately obvious to me which profession would best suit what I’m looking for in terms of gameplay and aesthetics. I’ve already tried all of them, but I cannot trust my own observations because I somehow feel that the professions may not feel the same way after I reach max level. Some people have suggested that I try making an sPvP character which might give me some perspective, but since my purpose isn’t quite sPvP (more on that later), I feel it’s not the proper way to go about it. I ask that, since most of you may already have several professions to max level, if any of you could help me choose a profession based on what I will shortly describe I’m looking for, please do so based on your experiences with them at max level. The reason why this is important to me is that I don’t like spreading my time among several characters, but rather concentrate on and hopefully master just one.
I tend to prefer characters that are hybrids or in some cases jacks of all trades (in World of Warcraft terms, druids or shamans) with an emphasis in utility or support, seldom in straight up direct damage or tanking, with a higher than average skill cap (Not because I’m any good, but rather something that doesn’t feel like dull button mashing; I prefer dynamic over face-roll). I already feel that an engineer, elementalist or even a guardian might fit what I’m looking for, but here’s where you come in with your max level perspective I guess. That said, I tend to appreciate and favor a certain degree of tankiness, as I don’t have the same reaction time as when I was younger and being squishy doesn’t give my reflexes enough cushion.
In terms of aesthetics, I appreciate a certain degree of mysticism (I’m not an RPer per se, but I appreciate feeling personally engaged in the storyline and experience the story fully) so “magical” characters are more appealing than the alternative to me, but more as melee than as caster (I find a proper smash satisfying now and then). This preference doesn’t automatically exclude the options: to give an example, I could play an engineer I guess, though it’s not mystical, but its aesthetics are not as appealing to the fantasy fan in me as say another character like a shadowstepping thief, a divine channeling guardian or a meteor showering ele.
As for my endgame (lol?) expectations, I have a heavy inclination towards WvW, though not sPvP, and I like to experience storylines so I could say that some PvE sprinkled in would be right proper.
TL,DR: I apologize, but won’t include a TLDR because though I appreciate your help, I’d rather receive feedback from someone who takes that time and care to fully understand my plea. If this means being ignored and possibly not getting a reply to this, then so be it, I still thank you for the intent.
Living Story and constant content does not fix the core problems of this game and why so many people have left and many more continue to leave.
I wonder why people keep thinking Living Story is a “fix” and not a feature in itself.
Oh has it?? I am so sorry then, thanks for the heads up
This is an honest question, probably really dumb question, but honest nonetheless. I hope I don’t get severely thrashed because of this. I’ve just always been a fan of the sense of fear and danger of being ganked like in WoW, AoC, AoW, Eve Online, etc… Therefore, would there be the slightest possibility, at all, that ArenaNet might incorporate, at any moment, a full PvP server where open world PvP might happen besides WvW, like in the same continents where we play the regular story and quest and such? Like say a point in the story when the different races decide to take up arms against each other or something? I also don’t mean impose it upon the general PvE populace, but rather, come up with a separate “world PvP” server?
This is not a request, or a proper suggestion, I’m just wondering if the community thinks this game’s infrastructure, style, direction would go inline with such a thing… curiosity more than expectation tbh.
Again, please don’t trash me too hard if the mere concept of this potentially dumb post is unpalatable.

Yikes! This is really not true! Rangers can be great at anything. I personally think they are the best class, based on how I like to play. I would recommend the Ranger class to anyone who is a tactician, loves math, and enjoys figuring out the mechanics of the game. If you are more interested in beating the snot out of your opponents, with little regard for what is going on, I would recommend another class.
As a ranger you will have to dodge frequently, obsessively watch your pet, and switch your weapons, skills, pets between encounters in dungeons—sometimes. If this seems like a pain, don’t choose a ranger. If you like the idea, that’s good news. You’ll benefit your team more than any other class (these are fighting words, I am sure). I detailed some of the specifics below, read on if you are interested:
Rule #1:
[…]
So, to answer the question: Choose a ranger if you enjoy tinkering with your equipment and skills from time to time, and like watching all the little damage markers and status of your teammates. If not, I don’t think you will enjoy Ranger too much. In honesty, quite a few people loathe the class…
I absolutely agree with this post!
I never understand how people claim they want diversity in their MMOs and when they’re given it with the inclusion of classes that are not completely based on how much damage you can min/max out of them, they cry and complain.
Though this may sound weird coming from someone who is posting here, I wouldn’t take the majority of the comments in this forum very seriously, particularly since they belong to a very loud minority. Still there are some, like the one I just quoted, who are spot on, and give you proper arguments behind their opinions and based on them you should feel very encouraged to give the Ranger a spin
I’ve made a post that could be related to this, as the engineer skill “mine field” also seems to not be working properly: whenever an enemy steps or gets in range of any of them, they do nothing and instead its cooldown starts to self-renew continously. Being mines also I believe both issues could be related.
I don’t know if it’s been reported already, but whenever I use the Mine Field skill (the f-skill you get when the unlockable “Throw Mine” skill is selected) they don’t detonate when the enemy walks over them, and rather its cooldown starts auto-renewing continously, whenever said enemy steps over any of the mines on the ground. I tested it on different areas to make sure it wasn’t map related.
