~Aric Landvick
~Level 80 Norn Mesmer
So this is my rant about the mentors. Major story line spoilers, mostly for Vigil since that is the one I finished to the end with.
So you join the order and meet your mentor: Forgal Kernsson, Tybalt Leftpaw, or that plant chick whose name evades me. If you are like me, you start to connect to this NPC. I liked that fact that Forgal would very rarely need to be revived, unlike a certain NPC who shall remain nameless for now. He could fight and he really felt like a mentor. I was using a Norn Mesmer so the fact that Forgal was a Norn Warrior (Maybe?) really clicked with me. Unlike with Tybalt where he and my human were engineers…
I enjoyed the missions where I got help from Forgal. If I was being honest, then he was my favorite NPC of the entire game. I even changed my style of fighting to match his as closely as a Mesmer could. I figured that hiding behind my clones was a bad idea and Forgal was not as expendable as a clone.
Then along came Claw Island. That dragon showed up and I knew something awful was coming. Then Forgal began his talk about the heroic death and the odds. When he talked about his legacy I started to tear up. In all honesty I think I was crying when that door closed. I had lost the mentor who had literally changed the way I played the game.
To my horror the story gave me Trahearne as a partner. I had to turn my Mesmer from a damage build to as close to a tank build as I could get. Why? Because that wimpy plant could not take any damage. To keep him alive so he could do his freakish amounts of rituals required me to take all the aggro.
To make things even worse, the Pale Tree decrees that he is to lead us to victory! First, since when did the Norn listen to the Pale Tree? Or the Asura? I understand that part of the story is watching him grow from a scholar to a Marshal, but I would have made a better Marshal. I know they wanted a neutral party to lead them but I was making almost all of the decisions! Most of what the Pact does is because I told Trahearne to do it! So the Vigil was in fact in control.
I know that most of this could just be me being an idiot but that is what I thought.
If portals get a nerf , I will be so angry. My portals are the only thing that makes me useful to my WvW guild! I am not losing that feeling of knowing that I was a crucial part of the plan.
People quit being a Mesmer cause “it’s too hard”. We few who stick with it should not be punished anymore.
No! I like that there is almost never a queue for my server’s WvW. If your server is lacking in people, you need to compensate with tactics. I come from a relatively low population server, Furgeson’s Crossing, and I like it.
10- I liked how the name had backstory to it. Also I am very generous with scores.
Presenting: Kurtz Bathory- noble engineer.
I chose Kurtz cause it was my great grandfather’s name.
Bathory-(I forgot the accent on the a) this was the last name of a noble family in RL that was part of the Kingdom of Hungary. The most infamous member was Elizabeth Bathory, who was charged with the murder of 650 girls.
To pronounce the name: Kurtz ( how it sounds) Bathory (bath + rey )
You could try and get money from porting people to the ends of the jumping puzzles as well as all above suggested ideas.
I’ve made 3 gold in one day from that. Sure it is slow but it is a Mesmer only way of making money.
I confess these things to you my fellow mesmers:
I also confess to charging people too much to portal them in jumping puzzles.
I confess that I have never used the torch.
I wear bright and colorful armor. My main Mesmer is a Norn!!!
I am a complete coward in WvW. I will withdraw from battle when the odds are not in my favor.
When ever I forget to send my first portal, I claim a glitch stopped me.

Commander as it is now is messed up. For 100 gold you get a little emblem that for some reason makes it look like you can lead. Most commanders I have met know less about WvW than I do (then again I am in a low pop server).
In theory some one could get the title with out ever doing any WvW before that.
If they nerfed my portals, I would honesty go crazy. It makes we mesmers even more of a threat. It keeps everyone on their toes since a sudden golem makes things fun. The problem is that if the plan relies to heavily on the portal, lag can kill everything.
I laugh at all of you saying that norn are terrible for jumping puzzles!
Sure positioning exactly where you need to be is hard and norn glitch like made through walls.
However as a Mesmer I have a safety net in my portals!
Should memory serve, Forgal (spirits rest his soul) mentioned how his mate and child had died. The way he said it made it clear he cared for them more than “they both did great deeds”. Maybe I am reading into this too much.
I made my male norn mesmer (you read that right) because I saw that on my server that Asura and humans were the most popular. I also liked how the Mesmer profession tactics are completely at odds with the Norn views of honor. Also armor that looks good for Mesmers (frilly and colorful) look very good on my norn.
I originally hated this option of the story, but I kept doing it.
About 60 levels past and I forgot about the gear warband. I was in Orr. Through the story I did so much. Then it happened. I chose to send the tanks in Orr.
I complete the quest line for the tanks and started to cry a little ( never happens).
For when I saw the commander of the tank line, I felt old. The leader of the tank line was named Ballista Geargrind, the charr from whom I had taken that chugger.

((Great Idea Btw))
Name: Aric Landvick
Approximate Age: 28
Affiliation: NA
Race: Norn
Profession: Mesmer
He is known as the Merciful Shadow. He is known by this name because he suddenly appears, helps where he is needed, then is gone with out a trace. He also seems to only kill those who he deems evil, sparing anyone else around them.
Appearance
He is very tall for a Norn. Unlike many in his profession, he is not morbidly obese. His nose is flat and mangled like it had been broken many times in the past. His arms are covered in strange tattoos and for some reason he tries his best to hide them from those around him. The mask he wears looks as if it had been worn for many generations before he wore it. Very few can claim to have seen his face and few still can remember what he looks like.
History
Youth
He never knew his father or his mother. He was left in the woods when he was a baby and found by an old man who raised Aric as his own. The Norn raised Aric in a small compound, high in the Shiverpeak Mountain. The man was a mesmer by trade and taught young Aric all he knew of the profession. Oddly, the man never told Aric what his name was. This upbringing caused young Aric to be very anti-social.
Early Life
While he was out of the compound one day, grawl attacked and killed everyone inside. Horrified with what he saw as his fault, since he was not on guard duty like he was suppose to, Aric called to the Spirits of the Wild to give him the power to protect those around. The Spirit of the Wolf heard his plea and granted his request. He would be given the gifts of Wolf and the powers he wanted, but he would be marked with a tattoo for every person who had died due to his failure.
Current Status
Rumor has it that the Shadow has been spotted in the city of Lion’s Arch, never in Hoelbrak though. The reason for this is that the Shadow’s hideout is in a unused part of the sewers of Lion’s Arch . There Aric lives when he is not seeking those who are being harmed or wronged. He lives there with the only other two people in all of Tyria who know his face, a Skritt demolitionist named Clemm, and an Asura inventor named Qixxic.
Affiliations
Guilds and Groups
The Tenacious Affliction. He is a tactician and scout for the guild due to how good he is at escape from his enemies and infiltration. He very rarely does other things with them.
Family and Friends
The only true friends are his two confidants Clemm and Qixxic. He saved them both from dredge and the Inquest respectively. They agreed to help him in his task.
Personality
His sense of justice is his biggest flaw. He has been known to risk his own life just to save someone. He is kind but aloof to those he meets.
Temperament
He will only kill those he has to kill.
Quirks
Other than his strange sense of morality he is surprisingly stable.
Stories and Art Involving This Character
NA
Other
Not a mini. Not some dumb AI thing that follows me around and does nothing.
I want a Skritt or quaggan who could follow you around, could be sent on “missions” to collect crafting mats or shinnies for you every so often on a cooldown, or could fight (not very well) for you.
It could be a quest line to gain the trust of said companion. My Norn would be even more awesome with a Skritt sidekick.
(Oh I don’t care if this has been suggested already. I had to say it.)
My first and only human character was a male Noble (this is important) Necromancer. His name was Kurtz (my great grandfather’s first name. ) Bathory. Yes that Bathroy.
What do I mean by “that Bathroy” See, I am a European History nerd (not slamming anyone but me). One of my favorite stories of 16-17th century Europe was the story of Elizabeth Bathroy. Who the heck is she ,you might ask? She was one of the first known serial killers in history. She was accused of killing 650 girls.
So I gave my necromancer the last name of a noblewoman who killed people.
I love your second name. Seems very norn. The first one? I don’t know but something seems off to me (but what do I know).
Aric Landvick -Mesmer
(I always use the first name Aric in an MMO when possible. Landvick was an old norse family name I found on Wikipedia)
OBJECTION! (warning rant approaching)
My main is a level 80 (like that matters) Male Norn Mesmer. That’s right Mesmer.
I wear bright, frilly, and completely not Norn style armor. I wear cheerful colors (I would post a screen shot but my colors have been know to cause temporary blindness and insanity) and don’t care what anyone thinks.
Why in the name of the Spirits would I completely go against everything norn? Because my clones and I look tasteful (or tacky depending on your views), yet I still look like I would rip your throat out you make me mad. Norn size also makes light armor amazing.

Eleys are what I like to call glass cannons. They deal a lot of damage but can not take it. Or maybe they can.
Anyone who has been to Metrica Province knows of this creature. This extremely difficult and overpowered boss has been called one of the most difficult in the game.
That however is not my problem with it however. I like challenges personally.
My problem is with the end chest. According to the wiki, only attacking the embers and rezing downed players leads to no chest at all. Only damaging the boss does the trick. Not only does the boss’ difficult movements make it hard to help other players, the game mechanics rewards you for ignoring them!
Also that rule leads to a trend that I saw. All a player has to do is wait outside of the boss until it has almost no health. Then they can just attack it,deliver the coup de gras (death blow), and get a chest. If you die before the creature does, no chest or exp for you. Even if you were there the entire time, no chest.
I know I am not the only one who this this has to.
