Why builds locked in arenas?

Ok please stop it, I understand that they wanted to lock builds from the start, but why they still doing it when we log off and back with different builds?

When I get into downstate already logging off and getting back before my death wait time countsdown on a different build. So the system is easly abuseable and nothing more than a character slot sale.

My problem isn’t the lockdown itself but the pretty oblivious way that we all use to avoid it.

But I still await to some test if this happens with the mesmer condi transfer or not. If it does than the problem affects an another class too which would help a lot for the devs to find and fix the issue.

I would understand that, but there is 2 thing, we are in random match ups so with this there is no space to adopt to the changing environment.

And also my point is that there is a workaround what we abuse constantly by switching to our other builds.

Also we usually switch in death down time so not even loseing time.

Is the function where we have 1 minute “prep” time before (un)ranked arenas has any meaning at all?

99% of the players standing in their spawn point so you can’t scout your enemy, you can check if it’s premade or not, and you can switch class if the matcmaking created a not too optimal team for you, or you switch so you can counter a probability of the enemy team composition.

But for example you die after the initial fight because the enemy has 2-3 stealth burster and your build is weak against them, what we do now? Switch character which has the counter build premade, because we can’t adjust our own gameplay in the match. Seriously we need to have 5 different character premade with different builds and log off / back to adjust to the match. (I am not talking about class switch but just build switch on the same class)

This is just a something that doesn’t make sense, what this restriction is intended to do?

When someone will fall out from a division on a lost match the rage will just reach a new yet unseen level :O
And if that lose gona be against a premade by a solo Qer quit is just granted.

Was interesting to read about HoT, eariel in the thread folks mentioned HoT will bring a lot of old folk back to the game.

So, anyone thinks it’s a realistic scenario where someone bought the game played it for x time and then quit, and now will pay $50 buck again to give it an another try?

Don’t missunderstand it, I hope it does, it’s just something that never happened to me.

This thing come up yesterday when I was drinking with my friends and 2 of them are actually left the game not so long ago, because they got bored of PvE but when they wanted to start PvP they were farmed by old players and eventually just gave up, now when I talked about the HoT with them, they didn’t even consider to buy the game again because of some new PvE map.

Maybe leagues will bring some changes but I think it’s only gona effect the players who already in the PvP scene.

Also many angry thread in the forum because DD cele elementalist are considered to be the best on almost all front atm, but the truth is all the trait what makes ele OP now are made to work with the elite specializations, we will see a huge change in the meta when we finaly get the elites unlocked, so this list would be really really temporary.

I have no benefit to make this connected to me, but I opened this topic and read all the posts in it, and I can clearly see that there are people who just read the title or half of the OP and started to write their own reply, meantime those concerns are already has been mentioned / argued. So, yeah I don’t want the thread to iterate the same concern over and over again just because some folks wana enjoy their rant time without reading.

1. f2p pvp only MMORPG do not exist for a reason.

Are you sure? What if I say every F2P MMO doing the same? And even some P2P.

It doesn’t matter in what disguise you put it in.

  • 30 day free trial.
  • F2P but have to be a subscriber to get your labor points.
  • F2P or B2P but the $ gives you benefit in the cashshop.

All business model except the pay 2 play without ingame cashop doing the same.

Think about this, even though LoL is smaller in scope why does riot have 1000 employees. having a standalone f2p system is not easy or cheap.

This will explain a lot: http://www.riotgames.com/careers Riot represents the company all around the world, they have offices everywhere, you think 1,000 people working on the game? Even an OS project with Git PRs can’t handle this many different input.

ANet has a 250 crew but they only exists in the US, their interest doesn’t go to “Santiago, Chile” like Riot.

Diversion? Yep a fact to open PvP free to the world would require more attention from ANet’s side, but how much more is the question, utilizeing a system which already exists (invite your friends to try out GW2) in a different way wouldn’t take up development time, new acc creation and gold selling wouldn’t be an issue since we already discussed that those are limitable and can be 100% shut out.

More focus on PvP: Nope, not needed to provide “more” just because PvP is F2P, actually you can create a trashy unbalanced F2P game “Who cares? it’s free, get over it” stands in that situation. But we have a B2P game and many of the user wana play PvP, so they have to pay attention to their customers’ concerns.

10-13ms ping means you are maximum 3-4 hop from the server geographicly, which is kinda limited.

Just some more technical side to those who are worried about the ping.

  • Low FPS will keep you behind the reality e.g. 20 fps means you see a new picture every 50 ms.
  • Keyboard / Mouse input, those devices can have up to 100 ms latency untill your pc actually sending out a new packet through the ethernet card, even if your client already rendering the action the packet is still on the line.
  • Game ticks, the game isn’t a continious happening the servers taking the input for x ms and then processing a game tick where the events happen and then they send out the updates to the client. (I don’t know how many ticks the GW2 doing per second but you can look around 50 for a high speed action game like this.)
  • Human factor, even tho we think we see and doing everything in real time your brain and your muscles have a latency too, the image you see is behind the image what your eyes are currently receiving. It takes time to process and move a muscle so you have to factor everything in.

The 200ms gate, those who are not familiar with this if you create a program which respond faster than 200ms to a mouse click the human brain will feel deceived and will think that the event happened before the click was made, because of the latency of our vision.

TL;DR: It’s always good to have less latency but small differents like 40-50ms in a scenario like this will never gona make any change.

I agree that burning is OP. Nothing should be able to take you out in 2 seconds without skill. Like a burst out of stealth takes skill, but burning is just stupid.

Now that you mention WvWers hmm it would solve a lot of problem.
It’s not rare to see pro WvWers throwing their team’s win because they are good in WvW scenario but far away from understanding sPvP strategy, kinda annoying to see a commander sitting on treb from 0 to 500… while his / her team loseing.

Important skills’ cast time is around 750-1000 ms so when you look at the avarage 60 ms ping that 40 ms +/- doesn’t make big changes.

While you don’t have something like 150-200 ms ping you all good in games like this.

Simple fix: No requirement for any gear to be equiped, it’s stupid from ANet’s side and the problem is so small it only affects maybe a 0.1% of the matches, no fixs to be expected.

I wonder if anyone even reading this kind of topics anymore? Is my post will be read? How many times this was posted?

This kind of topics always end up with 2 kind of people arguing, one who plays premades and farm randoms and think that’s how it should be, but never playing in any tournament because they know they only good enough to abuse the system’s flaw;
The other ones who are desperate to find at least a bit more equal scenario and win or lose by their performance not by RNGod to be rolled against a premade.

It’s all ok if you wana play in premades but then take the courage and play against other premades only, solo Qers never asked for premade opponents but premades asking for solo Qers to feed their pride.

btw practice? F1 pilots not getting better by overtaking cyclist…

PvE maps we use PvE gears and builds, not hard to lose against someone who running around prepared to 1v1 and nothing else.

Gear differents like the 5% extra what ascended gives enough to win a match where is only 4% different between 2 player.

One to many option for PvP, use the arenas made specificly for this and paid by community to have fair 1vs1 for those who enjoy that, don’t mind the gear or build? Go WvW and avoid the commander tag can find a lot of peep roaming solo to 1v1.

This bug will get worse now.

Yep, the condition transfer bug. Recently the Nos build got really popular and this bug will now gona be a bigger problem, for years the condition transfering wasn’t a meta playstyle bug now since the specialization rewamp this happening all over the place.

For those who are unaware what is this, the scene is simple you gather up conditions from player A and transfer it to player B, now player A and B goes into downstate, player B dies and player A will rally on their own teammate’s death.

Why? Somehow the kill will trigger a playerkill event, even tho you are the one who killed player B with the conditions, their original source is player A.

How much a problem is this now? I ran a fun corruption necro with plague signet for 2 day and over like 30-40 matches I seen this artifact in the half of the games. Once our team downed 4 player of the enemy team and since I collected conditions from basicly everyone on their team 3 of them rallied on their own mate’s death and wiped us back in seconds.

If a bug like this appers on the WTS final and changing the outcome of the game would get more attention? Because we know this exists since day 0 but didn’t paid much attention because it was rare, but now this will happen more and more often untill Nos starts to play a different build.

Minor problems with live or delayed ingame view, it gives unfair benefit in any other form than LAN.

Imagine team A playing on their home PC watching their character on one monitor and watching the team B players on their 2-3-4 monitor, stealth would be just a nice visual effect without benefit.

The 5v5 gameplay and the game mechanic is too fast to be commentated and you need to be a player with good map awarness to understand what is going on, only the casters can bring a small ease to the viewers but sadly I see some of them are just popular on twitch but not even close to understand the game.

Pro players could cast the game much better looking at you Frae >D

Respectful honest players fighting untill the last moment even tho the outcome is already decided, the minority who would abuse the system for higher leagues is the ones who can’t even stand a statistics change and rather leave the match as a coward even tho the reailty isn’t like “Oh, if I am not there at when the score reaching 500 it’s like I didn’t lost at all.”

I am not worried for this, I know I will still enjoy PvP even if my team losing.

Nope, not worth it, enough to see the team chat sometime to lose my mood, don’t want someone screaming to my ears when they die in a 3v1 situation telling me how we should follow his or her plan.

Teamspeak / Skype / Viber there is alot of platform for those who wana use this feature, random teams couldn’t benefit from it.

I am happy to see the majority of the posts are reasoning and are realistic.

Here is some though why this topic is important in my eyes, right now I do not find any other MMORPG with this much content, with this awesome gameplay mechanic and quality.

But the popularity slowly decreasing over time, I remember the hype around the game back in 2012, I was so excited to buy the game after launch and was not dissapointed, and this is why I don’t wana see new trashy and half baked games taking the potential playerbase away look at twitch the ARK a bugy alpha game which will never be developed into a final product taking the throne, Skyforge is on the way and that game is just an another iteration of the old “grind your life away” type of on MMORPG.

When you create a new toon now the initial map for the story start is basicly empty only bots standing there and trying to whisper you with their stupid gold sale (no smart people will risk their account to be banned while you can buy gold via safe ingame), I said it before but I say it again if GW2 would be a monthly subscriber fee game I would still pay it and be happy about it, because it’s worth it.

But I also know not everyone can afford that, or not every player spending enough time ingame to say “I pay monthly ten bucks for 20 hour gameplay”.

Also this isn’t much different from parties when you hit the city saturday night many place asking for fee to enter the club, how many times you paid the price just to go in and see a dead or empty party? That’s why clubs without entrance fee are filled with folks even tho the drinks cost twice as much.

An MMORPG need playerbase and GW2 need more I was sad to see all the low level maps’ champion events like the Cave Troll has been converted to Veteran from Champion because there was not enough player to kill a champ, I have my main toon on 80 for 3 year now and I still like to go back the lv15 maps but the events are just dead there, it was much more fun to see 30 people struggle with the troll than solo it and move to SW because the majority of the player base now those who has the game from launch day.

And this is the problem with the PvP too, there is 2 kind of PvP player out there one who are R80 for 2 year now and can wipe a team of newbies alone and the newbies who are being wiped to 500-10 because even tho they wana try out PvP, there is no equal matchup for them, and the middle layer is totaly missing because those who are constantly being wiped will just give up and go back PvE / WvW.

not when ppl can apply burning twice as fast as you can cleanse it…you know unless you’re a dd ele you can’t just keep cleansing over and over again and some of those burning stacks are also instant (Aka burn guard) so you can’t even dodge…you can just cleanse until you have nothing left and then you’re dead, gg

Hard topic, I lean toward Teutos’s answer, those who play PvP with bad connection are really just a curse for their team, it seems perfecly unfair from your point of the view but the truth is it doesn’t matter if 1 or 4 player disconnecting the team will lose anyway, the games are too close and losing 1 person anytime in a match will cost the team the whole match.

Separated world, hmm that’s not even a bad idea but how about a small plus, if they get rank 40 (at those lvl peeps are already know the basic) let them play with everyone else, no1 wana troll away an acc with like 600-700 serious match.

Also F2P players get a separated reward track, similar to the old skin system where we only got blue / green etc.. skins out of the matches? I mean setting up simple restictions wouldn’t be hard.

I am not sure if this really the way to go, I mean leaving you in teamfights? hmm even the bests doing it on purpose because they see their CD and know they can’t win it so trying to do smth else, but if the case where a pug leaves you is the same, can’t punnish someone just because they play bad or have something different in their minds.

It’s not far away from saying let’s just play in 5v5 parties and we get no surprise.

I know its sucks to be in a team where you know you gona lose (and atm the matchmaking puts you in the same group of 10-20 peeps over and over again) but think in big, how many lost matches you had where someone said:" Ok we lost because I did this and this wrong…"
Nope, never? Cuz at the end of a bad game most of the player would just blacklist each other and over time we would end up with an hour Q time.

If players would use this feature like it should be used there wouldn’t be too much of a problem, but right now I know many player simply reporting his / her whole team for boting at the end of a lost match.

Concerns about dishonor system

It’s already a topic / request to allow players to “dishonor” their teammates for cases like some1 saying “i gona afk this out” or trash talking their team and doing nothing, ofc this would bring justice.

The other side of the coin is your case, when an angry loser team starting to blame each other, and the stupidest thing is to look at the points table, if there is a mate with you on the point after a kill, the tanky stays to cap it and the faster moving leaves to the other points results in low score even if you carried your team.

There is no perfect system I don’t always wana be judged by my team on my gameplay but I also want some way to punish those who giving up a match without real reason.

Hope ANet will find the golden middle way.

If i remember correctly the blog post about Leagues mention better rewards (or the video annon.) so maybe higher divisions pay better? Would be nice to see.

1 g for a game sounds alot but if you are in the legendary div. and you already queued for 10 min + 15min match for a top player hmm, I can agree on that.

LB/GS was good in solo q but not in teams sadly ANet may thought, ok ranger’s pro is strong in random 1v1, and their con is no team support.

I assume this cuz they said exactly the same about necro in PvE situations, where the class’s them is a greedy but high surviveability.

As I said there are flaws, but now times we got more patches and I sincerely hope this will go on.

I don’t want to alarm you but anet doesn’t care about pvp. Fact.

Not really sure how ANet standing with PvP seemslike they invest money into it by paying for the ESL / WTS.

My biggest concern with PvP is the way ANet taking feedbacks, like teef was day 0 OP in 1vs1 and it’s just the recent patch where they become a decapper / skirmisher which I think is their role and atm there is alot QQ topic about how a class is too strong for their role, I agree d/d ele has too much role at the current patch and shatter mesmer’s burst + surviveabiliy isn’t in the level with any other class.

But on the global picture if they tune those stats we could end up with a viable PvP, no 8k AA from power necro, no stealth execution from teef, rampage strong but the CD is in the perfect spot for it, enginers got alot versatility, rangers are kinda good with condi if they against a full zerker they may need a bit more dmg tho.

So the overall picture is close to be good, ofc elite spec will mess up everything XD

If they react just a bit faster to balance changes things will work out.

Please don’t charge ANet on patch day and say this is OP and that is OP, we see how meta changing because even if something seems OP at first glance a month later noone playing it cuz the community learned to counter it. (e.g. burning guard is still strong but soo much less topic you see about it, cuz players started to counter it)

I still don’t see how peeps connect F2P with bad community, B2P makes any difference? ToS? You mean when anet banned 10.000 account because they converted karma to gold , but if you clear you block list, you will get gold selling messages instantly even tho the acc was reported 2 year ago?

I like this community, there are some posts in this thread which explains their point of view with reasons behind it, and it’s a topic to talk about, which we do.

But please don’t just drop the “toxic” bomb, COD is a B2P too, and you never seen so much trash at one place other than that XD

By the way, I strongly belive our ingame community’s calm and nice side is strongly connected to the way the game is designed, no KS here so peeps not QQ about drop teefs, no drop share, so no need to go in arguments who deserves what, PvP is equal so hard to QQ about unfair advantage (still happens just on builds), WvW the names are hidden, PvP even the ranks and MMR are hidden so can’t argue about who made the team lose.

Shows how well the game is designed in this aspect, but you will still get kicked from party if you got less than 5k AP for a dungeon

Things to consider on ANet’s side.

F11 → Log out → Mark the player as a possible leaver, may just change toon but if not than dishonor will be deserver when the counter hits 500.

F11→ Exit → Same as above, fast pcs can log back and load the map even if there is some technical artifact that only solvable by reseting the client.

GW2.exe is forcedly shutdown from task manager, can be detected by a simultaneously running service, and ping the server to see if there is internet connection left.

If the internet connection is lost the game can send a status on startup when it was lost and the system can remove one stack of dishonor.

16 thread from 27 is nothing more than rant and QQ, I counted it not just guessing. I read most of it, we had a topic collection not so long ago which collected rants about all of the 8 class is “OP”;

I don’t think any1 who has their map chat turned on didn’t got messages like.

“kittening zerker” → just because the other one ran 0 surviveability build
“noob tanker kitten ” → just because burst didn’t bought you down.
“easy kitten ” → 2-3v1 you are weak cuz can’t counter their team alone
“no skill condi trash” → in this game if you plan longer than your cast time, you gona be a noob by some merit.
… I could go on PvPer community will always compete, if one loses a fight will compete with words afterwards.

It’s ok, this is part of the game, no game out there where it doesn’t go the same way.

Still many does not considering that a new troll account will be useless, they will be matched in the lowest level and will be out ranked almost instanly.

Nothing can hold the trolls back at the current system either, you can troll at rank80 too, reports make no difference, and dishonor only applies if you leave the match, a troll cares the less.

CS:GO cannot be compared in many way, I said only F2P the PvP part 99% of the game is still B2P and the PvP would allow to get a quick peek before buy.

Also because of the matchmaking system if you are a player who played PvP for at least a month you will never see totaly new players around.

Btw if ANet sets a gate like Rank 20+ on (Un)Ranked arenas you will get players in there if they already know how the game mechanic works.

I only did like 2 or 3 dungeon’s story so I got my dungeon skins from rotation only.
But if you look at the good side if for e.g. CoF runs out the rotation and the play dont wana wait 7 week to get back to it, they would always buy the game :O Income

The PvP atm based on the players who doing it only for the “easy” daily and the players who already on the top and playing with each other for years now, since HoT annonunced I didn’t seen any kind of player base bloom or anything, and I don’t think the actual release day gona bring any difference. :/

Uhm why no comparison log is attached to a full zerk build? I mean seriously 200-1200-3000 burning? Any zerker AA 1500-1500-3000 :O can’t cleanse it or send it back…. No ss from 15k crits or anything like that…

I miss the old days when the forum was all about teef 8k backstabs from stealth an uncounterable dmg :/

As you said we know nothing yet, but can speculate. Ofc you trying to point out the league system’s flaw in general, the problem is as you can see it too, there is no perfect system if oRNG gona be matched up against TCG in amber league they will still get 1 win even tho the game’s skill level was much more high, but I don’t want a system either where an Amber team beats a Legendary 5v4 (afk) or premade farm match and get into the Legendary division instantly.

I will get back to this topic when more information released about the system.

I will try to answer all the concern in one post.

The timing: It’s someting that they could have done from start and the idea isn’t new for me either, but the Leagues what bought this up in me once again.

Scrubs: As a programer it seems logic to me to use the League system in matcmaking as a filter, new players arrive without skills and their MMR / Rank / League is at the bottom so old players not going to be matched up against them IF the matcmaking will use the Leagues as filtering arrays, so Tier 1 playes will fight against Tier 1 or max Tier 2 players, so you don’t have to worry as Legendary player to get into a full scrub team.

Performance/Server issues: The PvP instance is the least problematic map to host, there are basicly no other calculations made other than the players interaction with each other, the most resource intensive calculations are the path finding and the AI of the NPC; I don’t have exact numbers or any interaction with the source code, but from personal experience I say it takes more server resource to host 1 WB train map than 50 PvP match in the same time.

Economy: I rarely play PvE nowtimes because in PvP I have no use of the gold whatsoever and if you get dungeon armours you still can’t do no more than salvage it an sell the insignia, but in 1 hour at SW CF PvE players earn around 10-20 gold at bare minimum and the economy still carry that over. (Also I got a lot of ascended gear from PvP but it’s acc bound, and salvageing not gona make me a 100 gold so basicly it’s good for nothing as income)

F2P PvP models: Nope, I can’t list other MMORPG but I played a lot F2P back in the days and many of them were originaly P2P or B2P just the model did not made big enough player base. And when they gone F2P the game got into it’s golden age. (Look at AION, even tho the game was popular after it become F2P it overtook every other F2P mmo out there)

Income: I strongly belive that many F2P PvP player would buy the game just to get their hand on the rest of the content, PvE isn’t a big topic in this sub forum but the truth is even tho it’s not the hardest PvE game still much better then 99% of MMOs, do you remember the quests to kill 500 of the same mob turn in and get a new one with a different mob? Yeah, that’s still what most MMORPG all about. GW2 has a better gameplay but no1 knows about it, cuz it’s behind an untryable 50$ gate.

Marketing: Tao made a good point here, if you wana play GW2 you need to find it, I agree on everything you said there, but I can shovel one more pile of dirt to it.
You can watch some yt video on it, or twitch channel (30-50 viewer max on pve) but can’t try out the game for myself, I remember when they made this invite your friend to try out GW2 weekend, I told it 2 of my friend they tried it out, and bought it at the next monday!

F2P games has the advantage that you can go try out and see it for yourself, but GW2 losing a lot of attention and potentially good players just because they need to bet $50 blindly on a game that they may not gona like it in 2 hours.

Duster: Frostball from oRNG is 15 yr old now, he would own most the PvP player If the queue has 3 times more people than now you will be still matched up against r80 players, I know this for sure, cuz my friend a PvE only player and sometime when I go over and play PvP on his rank 10-20~ ish acc I continiously get matched up against similar players, meanwhile on my own acc. I always get serious matches.

Hot-Join: Lastly my concern isn’t the reward track but the bots which playing 0-24 and switching accs when they reached the gold limit / day.

Hope I answered most of the concern I didn’t wanted to write an even larger OP post because peeps will read half of the post and drop in their problems even tho it’s maybe answered in the post later.

Not a hard task, but not sure if they have planned for feature like this, hope they did.

Also if you ask me, there are times when I would even continue playing within the loser team cuz we only lost as random first time team but had an overall good match just need a bit more time to work out.

Why isn’t this a thing yet?

ANet wana make PvP an eSport spending alot of money and time on it to happen, but even tho the GW2 is kinda popular it can never compete with F2P games; And of course I don’t want it to go F2P in all three game mode, bots and gold sellers would pop from every corner, but we have seen there is a system for demo accounts where they can limit the experience, then just give out the PvP part to everyone.

What’s the reasoning behind it? GW2 has no viewership on twitch basicly everyone who watching already has an account, so no new players gathered from there.

What about the bots? If we get the dishonor system back and remove hot-join rewards they can’t farm nothing.

What about the economy? PvPers can farm reward tracks for skins and can earn a small amount of gold but PvE is much more worthy so no real impact would come from there, since gold useless in PvP.

We could get a huge PvP player base and see more versatility, also folks now can try out the game without those “invite your friend to try out gw2 for 2 day” events and buy it if they like or wana get all 3 game mode, but they don’t even need to buy it some of them would always pay dollars for a skin in the gem shop, so just more income!

P.S.: GW2 is the best game I have ever played, the gameplay can be really fast and exciting, (games where you literally casting a skill for 4 second and staying still? super-slow motion compared to a PvP match here)
The way we don’t have to suffer from unbalanced gameplay where some maniac has a weapon which hits 200% more than yours and only paid $25k for it. (true story from PWI)
I could go on for days, but only peeps who already playing GW2 could responde so I hope that proves my point :/

Wow fast insult without even looking at the saved past recordings contents !
There is just some uncommented player view stuff, pretty much not worth watching.
And to twitch recordings still appplies that you can’t see anything above “all screen funny color blocks only” on low end internet.

Hard to find the video at http://www.twitch.tv/guildwars2/profile/past_broadcasts hmmm maybe the date “GuildWars2 Aug 8, 2015” or the 8hour length, thousand of views etc might help.

Anyway it’s luck that some1 else did it for you.
