Gift of Battle Feedback [merged]

Imagine if they added a gift of the league to sPvP, it’s a reward track. And you can only progress the reward track in ranked. To make it more fun, make it so winning and losing provide the same amount of track points, but also make it so you can’t completely afk you have to kill at least one player.

Clearly an interesting way to make sPvP more interesting.

Matchmaking is BROKEN.

The root cause is the fact that the MATCHMAKING INTENTIONALLY MAKES UNFAIR MATCHES AND PRE ORDAINS THE WINNERS.

Normally I would assume you are crazy, but I have been put an a team with the same toxic player 8 games in a row (9 he just akitten at the start of this game). Even if we assume we are the same rank/mmr (which we are, same league). Shouldn’t I be against him just once (I really, really oh so much want to kill him). What’s up with that? If we assume full randomness that is less that .2% chance.

Just to make it extra salty for me, I’m on the cusp of ruby, and keep getting knocked down because of it.

Get 15 in acrobatics for the reduce dodge cd, then go full berserkers, and evade everything.

For amulet, get the berserkers with utility slot and chuck a +20%gold find.

Of course it is very flexible but I will highlight some choices.
You want the 30 in critical strikes because it adds the most damage, it makes up for the lack of power traits.
15 in acrobatics is basically mandatory, it gives you so many more dodges. I run 30 in it because I run full zerkers gear and need the hp.
Signet of malice seems necessary for me (however you were running shadow protector so that is a good substitute), I stack it with assassin’s reward because when you run p/p, you tend not to stealth much and need a way to heal, assassin’s reward is very bad though.
For skills, Thieves Guild tends to be better than Basilisk because of the damage, but if you use it to stop major attacks it is just as useful.
Shadow refuge is good, Shadowstep is very strong because it allows you to run away from bosses to leave combat, breaks stuns, removes conditions, skip mobs, kite bosses/mobs (blink, then when they get to you blink back).
I also switch between signet of shadows and smoke screen. The blinds and block projectiles is very good against trash mobs. Which is why i run Master of deception (20% on deception skills).

Stealth didn’t do much, anyone who is complaining is using stealth wrong (or kittening for no reason). Shadow refuge, basically the only way to escape previously, is the same, You can’t stealth and stand still for 3 seconds and expect to escape, but then again you couldn’t do that before. The down skill stealth are almost useless now however.

PvE Condition Thief tweaking

In terms of fun, if you use thieves guild, you should be able to kill veterans solo, which means it is viable. However I am very skeptical of the performance of DB, (admitting I do not have a full condition damage set), however with +1300cd, DB will do in the level of 3000 bleeding damage over 10 seconds. Using an evasive mostly tank build (gear is half soldiers, half berserkers), my backstab crits for 5000, with 100% crit chance.

Assassin’s reward is trash, it heals for about 70 per point (no healing power), so if you have 1initive every 2 seconds it gives you 35/s hp regen or a massive burst heal of 700 (you have 14khp at level 80, with HiS healing for 6k).

Main idea of this build, or at least the way I play it, is to either steal into a mob or just run into them, Death Blossom once, and if I hit most of the mob I drop caltrops here, then DB 2x more, dodge out of there to drop some more caltrops from uncatchable trait. Pop shadow refuge if needed (usually only in emergencies) and generally just wait for initiative and caltrops to recharge, jump back into the foray and DB/caltrops some more.

Is this a normal mob? using CnD, BS, HS, HS, you should be able to kill any white level 80 mob (in about 3s, sub 80 mobs will go down in the BS). For multiple mobs you would want to use shortbow and aoe.

It is important to get deadly arts because condition duration increases your bleeding damage by more than anything else. I would also recommend stacking those listed bonuses just to make the DB damage as high as possible. Also taking the extra initiative will allow a bit more spammage. Caltrops isn’t that important because the damage is pretty low (it is mainly used for the slow), If you keep shadow step, you don’t need shadow refuge as you should be able to escape fine (remember to dodge to gain swiftness if you don’t get signet of shadows). The other utilities are open for argument as are most trait choices. I recommend Thieves Guild so you can take any 1-2 vet mobs.

Tips for a new Thief?

At the start (sub 40) go a melee set and a range set.
For example d/d and sb or d/d and p/p.
weak mobs> cnd, bs, heartseekers
medium mobs> use death blossom then kite.
very hard mobs> use range weapon and kite (will take very long)
Things that you need to learn are:
Dodge all big attacks, thieves have trash hp and you have to dodge all the major attacks from bosses and players, practice it asap.
You have this skill called steal, its pretty good. As you start out you won’t use it much, but try to spam it and get familiar with how to use the effects (eg. if you steal the healing tree, you can use hs to heal), also it is a shadow step so you can use it to get out of bad situations.
Try to get a couple of vit items as you level, you really need the hp.

PVE is mostly balanced in terms of output, but not skill, certain classes are significantly harder than others. The only party that asks for ‘specific class with specific build and armor’ is next to none, you mean “LF warriors full zerks”, and that only happens in CoF path 1, every other dungeon path that I can think of has uses for things other than burst single target dps.

im gonna assume one of the following:

A-They already have a thief and would prefer class diversity to cover eachother better
B- They lack a heavy armor class and would like someone who can eat a bulk of dmg and since 50% of warriors are glass they ask for a Guard who is rarely glass.
C- They believe guardians are a huge key to success past FotM 20+
D- They are ignorant

i fail to see the problem

You missed E) Thieves are t3* at dungeons, also at least 90% of thieves are absolutely terrible and even if they are good, contribute little to a group (high level fractals are group activities).

The problem is that in order to balance invisibility in PVP, you have to greatly reduce thieves hp to prevent PvP becoming TvT. But most damage in PvE is not % based, reducing the margin of error for thieves. And also they provide little support to the team without bringing in significantly higher dps to make up for it.

*t1 – warriors, guardians, mesmers
t2 – everyone else but thieves
t3 – thieves

Heck I even rerolled warrior because I tend to pve much more than pvp. It is so much easier to play.

Note that in PvP, thieves are very strong and powerful. They can destroy pugs, and be very annoying when solo attacking encampments.

Bringing full glass canon with no support or survivability and never switching off of d/d (unless it’s for p/p).

Have a read of thief ‘support’ skills, oh right there is like none, never mind.

Why putting there mobs if they have to be avoided in the first place? Skipping doesn’t require much skill, just less time than actual killing.

Why skip trash? Because cleaning up trash is a chore, why do you think it is called trash. If they wanted to, they could force you to kill the trash, other MMOs tend to increase (read: multiply by 10-100) the range where dungeon mobs can leash to in order to prevent skipping, but cleaning up trash is busy work, the overwhelming majority of it can be killed by pressing your 1 skill and waiting 30s while grabbing a drink. They also removed back tracking (in quests) because it is stupid and a waste of time.

The main reason I see that they put it there in the first place is to make the dungeon look appropriate, you would expect that the main center of worship or such would be crawling with followers and guards who are ready to jump on any person who looks out of place (especially because outside their homeland just got ransacked and invaded).

This isn’t to ask why people bother to run past mobs in dungeons, but to ask why that has to be the go-to strategy for people playing dungeons?

It looks like people can’t read, especially not the first line of the post (there should be a study on this)

On an explanation of the actual question, I assume you tend to use things like LFG.com or reading lfXm for path whatever in map chat. It is a form of selection bias. Because people who do dungeons more often (ie. they do it for rewards) tend to want to skip less rewarding activities (ie. killing trash). Hence you tend to get these people more as they will be in dungeons more, effectively over-representing their numbers.

For example you would see that if you asked a sample of random dungeon goers, 90% will say they want to skip trash where if you asked every gw2 player you may get something like 50% (completely made up numbers) .

(If you don’t get it, think of the best way to estimate average hospital stay, is it best to ask all the people currently staying how long they have been here?)

Once this is in effect, the norm becomes skipping while full clears tends to be the odd, this is not always the case, if you do story mode, you tend to kill most if not all mobs and watch all stories. So don’t complain if you want something different, just ask for it.

However it is quite hard to get a group if you are not 80, if you are, read up what cof path 1 is and do it 3 times, it will take about the same amount of time as any other path once.

Usually it is not the case that people would kick to bring in a friend, more often the missed view is that the kicked person is insufferable, incompetent and thinks he knows what to do (ie. telling other people what to do while sucking).

That aside, if you join another party, it should reshow the previous party chat so unless there was no chat whatsoever, you can find out the names and report them (and you should, people like that shouldn’t play MMO games).

Thief is one of the better classes at pve solo, but at lower gear levels you are really squishy. If you want to kill every sub champion mob, use p/p or bow and kite in a circle, this takes really long but you can take any number of(melee) mob, most range mobs. d/d with 3 (death lotus) spam +kiting kills most groups much much faster also.
