How about if you role play that all the people around you went insane from excess unbound magic and that’s why they’re wearing wings, bunny ears, glowing hands, etc etc etc.

Just add a story relevant reason and there you go. Instant immersion.

You know, this works. Tomorrow world bosses will be even more fun with all these asylum patients that gather there.

Even if I have to agree with Illconceived Was Na’s post as usual, I still really hate that I can’t turn of shoulders on outfits!

There are quite a few outfits I would love to buy if shoulders could be turned off!

In my opinion, if you create a reward that not even your absolute best or most dedicated players can get after 5 years, then something is seriously wrong. Lol.

You do know that once those players get that reward… the next one will appear right?

Yes, but what is your point? That still doesn’t change my opinion of it.

Tying exclusive rewards to achievements in the first place is something I find a bit distasteful (I say this as someone with a fair share of achievement points).

I’m personally of the opinion that rewards should be given to players for overcoming in-game challenges, and certainly shouldn’t require you to play for years to get. Games are about enjoyment after all, and I don’t think any new player would enjoy the idea of having to wait a couple of years before they can acquire something they’d like for their character. I can understand maybe giving unique titles for achievements, but having entire sets of gear walled off behind them is a bit much.

This isn’t point|counterpoint style of debate in which we are trying to convince each other about which method is superior — everyone agrees (even ANet) that more armor sets more quickly would be great. The problem is that ANet tied themselves in knots years before by establishing some then-time-saving adjustments to armor design, race design, animations, and so on. The end result, which critics of the status quo need to accept is that armor takes a lot longer to design, render, QA, implement and maintain than any of us think is reasonable (9 months, according to Mike O’Brien).

Despite the fact that some outfits appear like armor that has been stitched together doesn’t make them armor. Outfits use a unique ‘rig’ compared to light, medium, and heavy — a simple copy|paste isn’t possible. There are all sorts of intermediate steps (some of which are outlined by Miku above). Starting with outfits doesn’t save all that much time.

There’s no “classification” of outfits that saves time, because outfits are a fourth armor class (well, fifth, since town clothes is probably still coded in the game as the original fourth).

Thus there’s no shortcut to the process that saves time — if there was, ANet would have discovered it long ago (because this situation probably annoys them more than it does us, since it’s their responsibility to get it right the first time) and even if they hadn’t, players have had years to offer advice like the above.

tl;dr yes, we’re all (even ANet) frustrated. That doesn’t mean that there’s a quick fix hiding out there — we either wait (as we have done) or ANet has to put other stuff aside to redesign the armor skin system (which, for all we know, they might be doing — they wouldn’t tell us until it was near-ready to ship).

ANet, can you provide any guidance on how much of PoF will be pre-downloaded versus downloaded the day of release? Some of us are on metered internet connections and this would help to determine where we might need to be that day in order to download data files using an alternate internet connection. Any information that can be provided would be appreciated. I am really hoping we have been getting a majority of the downloads as we go but don’t want to assume.

Thanks! (Is it the 22nd yet?)

PvP vs PvE

More importantly, there’s no reason a skill needs to suck unless you’re fighting something with a defiance bar.

Reasons for short duration.

  1. Vs. normal mobs: most of these mobs die so quickly that lengthier duration is not needed. In the case of a few of them, short duration CC serves to interrupt mob skills a players might not want used. The only thing lengthier CC would accomplish in these fights is to CC-lock the mob until it’s dead. Boards don’t hit back, and neither do mobs that die before they can use a skill. This makes for boring combats. Core already has too much of this kind of fight. The game does not need normal HoT and forward mobs to not be able to fight back.
  2. Vs. Veterans: Short duration CC serves primarily as an interrupt. Some veterans have mechanics that players might find dangerous, or more likely annoying. While lengthier CC might actually expire before their larger health bars get ablated, this is hardly a necessity of game design.
  3. Vs. Elites are generally encountered (outside dungeons) in events that have scaled up due to the number of players present. Longer CC duration could mean these mobs will spend the entire fight unable to act, if the multiple players present have at least some game awareness. Meanwhile, short-duration CC would still be useful to interrupt.
  4. Lengthy CC in other games’ PvE is used primarily to remove one opponent from a fight long enough to deal with another. There is little need for such in GW2 given the plethora of cleave and AoE available to characters.

That you either disdain these reasons or didn’t think of them does not mean there is no reason for CC duration to be as short as it is. It also does not mean the skills “suck” in any kind of sense other than that you don’t like the way it is.

Due to the recent aurageddon (and the horsemen of the wingpocalypse preceding it), I’m now firmly in favor of a detailed set of options (preferably checkboxes) that would allow me to tweak my visual experience.

I’d absolutely love to have the ability to disable backpacks and character auras on other players and at the same time bring back skill visuals and auras.

I’m so sick of seeing dumb immersion breaking skins, feather wings and the most obnoxious dye channels, are there any servers with an overall high amount of players who choose a more realistic (realistic to THIS universe) approach skins wise?

GW2 aesthetic has become an absolute joke, & is ruining my enjoyment ingame to the point im not sure i even want to play this game anymore.
I am seriously considering uninstalling shortly after POF.

which is a shame cuz i am a GW1 veteran who loves this universe.

I’m always confused by the “can’t find a group to run dungeons” posts. Maybe it’s the time of day, but I find LFG populated every time I look to do something. Moreover, when LFG is entirely empty (or just doesn’t have what I want), I start a dungeon group and it fills relatively quickly. Often I don’t even wait for it to fill with 5, for easy and popular paths like SE p1.

Heroes? Sounds nice, but I don’t miss them in GW2 for the simple reason that I never played GW1. If anything, I think it will only make it harder for new/terrible players to keep their spot in the dungeon party, if there’s a super easy alternative to carrying that dead weight.

No. Because an AI cannot handle the combat system of the game. This isn’t a passive system like the one in GW1 where making an AI work was easy work.

Imagine doing the Graveling Barrows part of AC with Heroes, or the bomb part in CM Path 2, or the lasers at CoE, or the bombs at CoF. The encounters that make an AI useless are so many, there are probably more mechanics in the game that an AI cannot perform than those that it can.

I actually play daredevil and the few times people manage to WP away from me is because they WP almost as soon as they see me from ranged. How is that fun, Or decent gameplay? Literally avoiding playing the game.

And adapt? Play a whole new class because of a new crap mechanic? And how many ranged stuns are there even? And from what people are telling me knockback doesn’t even break the glide.

Oh and defenders don’t need anymore advantages.

Likely they are on a Zerg spec, and know they can’t beat a daredevil. It’s a complement. Yeah, it’s frustrating, but they know you’d wax them.

+1. I avoid single combat when I play a Zerg spec, and always engage when I’m on my roaming daredevil. That said, I don’t attack players who are clearly running back to their Zerg, unless I’m helping a commander take down a Tower or Keep.

Killing someone not spec’d for single combat with my cheese thief build gives me no satisfaction.

OMG jelly much. I wished the people complaining actually watched BG get double teamed every week. Maybe if the other servers stop siege, spawn camping, spying, oh and using alts accounts to jam our ability to get our ppl on a map. Quit cheating and maybe you will win more. We are closed most of the time, being loyal to a server shouldn’t be punished. If we are forced to disband there will be hell to pay on whatever servers we are forced to be on. It took me 6 months to get on my daughter’s server. I finally get to play with my daughter and you want to split us up, thanks guys your awesome!

My last comment wasn’t asking you to split up, or disband. It was just putting the idea out there. Maybe ANet should just remove the population caps altogether. That way people can go where they want to.

No full server have to worry about will have to worry about population cap even tho BG has double to triple their numbers. Blackgate players don’t have to worry about getting disbanded. Actually under my last proposal Blackgate would also be giving the chance to grow it’s server some more.

Then ANet would be able to slowly start merging or closing close to or actually empty servers. Almost everyone wins here.

Here are the facts almost all of the servers coordinate tanking not to face BG. Why you might ask? Because it’s no fun being that 300 Spartans fighting the whole of the Persian army. These last few week even on my server guilds have been reduced, to purposely tank the server score. So we didn’t have to fight BG’s hordes.

Or we can revisit my other proposal about completely removing the AOE cap in WvW only. That like in ESO a smaller more coordinated group of say 8 players. Can actually have a chance against 40 mindless near-hive minded zerglings.

I maybe a troll with class.
But at least I admit it!

Hellfire frustration

There are three separate issues being raised in the thread, only loosely connected:

  • Why are Hellfire & Radiant armors offered in the order they are, rather than allowing us complete choice, such as we get with the Zenith weapons?
  • Should the AP rewards be revamped, nearly 5 years after their introduction? (Related: are the thresholds reasonable for the individual rewards?)
  • Does ANet offer “enough” AP in HoT, LS3, Side Stories, and will they offer “enough” in PoF and LS4 (and any future side stories)? (Begging the question: what’s “enough”?)

Each of those are worthy of their own thread and I think trying to hash them all out in a single thread does disservice to each. Radiant/Hellfire can be reordered/resequenced without worrying about the big picture, but a full revamp (with moving around thresholds are rewards) would require much, much more attention. ANet could offer more AP (or less) without changing the current AP rewards and without worrying about Radiant or Hellfire.

In other words: keep it simple, let’s focus on the OP’s primary complaint, which is: why do we have to pick 2 radiants before we can get 3 hellfires (or vice versa)?

My answer: because for some reason, it seemed like a good idea at the time to someone.

I’d have no problem with ANet changing things so that at each of the six current thresholds, you can pick any of the remaining in whatever order you like. Aside from the fact that no development work is ever “easy” or “free”, this might be one of the easier changes for them to make.

It’s certainly likely to be easier than a total revamp of rewards or letting us in on their overall plans for AP in general.

tl;dr focus on the OP’s request. It seems reasonable and doable, without much dev attention (whereas most of the other ideas teased about in the thread wouldn’t be ‘easy’ including insisting that people simply go out and earn more AP).

Rime-Rimmed Mariner's Rebreather Effect

I am really hoping that ANet does completely away with underwater breathers — we don’t need them to breathe and all they do is force us to worry about a 7th rune, that might not even be useful for underwater combat.

In this scenario fantasy of mine, they’d turn the rime-rimmed effect into an aura that could be applied in some other way, e.g. via an infusion slot (and perhaps maintain the “only underwater” aspect, too).

down skills

Illconceived Was Na.9781

The downed skills are pretty fair in my opinion.

  • Guardian: (2) is a knockback, interrupts stomps. (3) some healing
  • Rev: (2) is a knockback, interrupts stomps. (3) some dmg
  • Warrior: (2) is a knockdown, interrupts stomps. (3) is a mixed bag, good for saving an ally to prevent a wipe, a gamble otherwise.
  • Engie: (2) is a pull, interrupts stomps. (3) is a knockback, interrupts stomps (also aggroing everything nearby)
  • Ranger: (2) is a daze, interrupts stomps. (3) is pretty cool since it can heal through a lot.
  • Thief: (2) is a teleport, so prevents stomps. (3) is a stealth, so can prevent stomps.
  • Ele: (2) is invulnerability and allows you to run a good distance, preventing stomps and allowing time to rally. (3) is an immobilize, so can delay a stomp
  • Mesmer: (2) is a random tele, so prevents a stomp; also includes a clone to distract the unwitting (not very helpful against skilled opponents). (3) is a phantasm that… can be distracting.
  • Necro: (2) is a fear, so interrupts a stomp. (3) is an aoe condi, so can delay a stomp.

Most veterans have access to (5) Signet of Agony, which is an AoE knock, interrupting stomps and other skills.

There are definitely some better (3) skills (ranger would be my pick for “best”, not rev nor necro), but there’s really only one that’s problematic (2) (mesmer, since the random destination prevents it from effectively avoiding death in a lot of situations).

All of the (2) skills avoid/prevent/interrupt stomps, which is their main purpose. None of the skills are get-out-of-jail free and all (3) have some value in at least a few niche situations. I wouldn’t agree that rev|necro are best nor that guardian is worst. The goal isn’t to allow you to personal down anything (unless it’s close to death already) — it’s to give you a fighting chance to rally, with help.

tl;dr downed skills do what they are supposed to do: get out of a stomp and give you a chance to rally if your teammates are on top of things (even if some could be a bit better or toned down to match the others).

PS it’s a poor rhetorical technique to insult the people who you are asking to change the status quo; consider editing your run-on paragraph to remove everything that isn’t about the specific requests and critiques. I might disagree with your opinion, but I’d still like to see you make a better case.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Amaimon.7823

But unlike the OP, I wouldn’t suggest a nerf. I would suggest a story mode where you get a completion and are able to experience the story but save the reward (skin, etc.) for the regular mode. This would actually benefit both the hardcore players and the more casual players: a lot of hardcore players have complained that the boss fights are already too easy (as you have). This is often because the original fight was nerfed which would not have to be done if there was an easy mode.

And what about average players who think the story bosses fights are fine as they are right now?

They, like me, will then do ‘normal mode’

Story mode: easy mode, only dialogue, no rewards
Normal mode: as they are now
Hard mode: 5 man raids, disabled cutscenes/dialogues

Open all servers. That’s the solution. Period.

I’ve said before, and I’ll say it again…..

Remove the server lock, and allow everybody to join whatever server they want. The queue system will balance out the problem naturally. Bandwagoneers will flood BG en masse, and the lineup to play will force players to either wait hours or have them transfer to less populated servers as the system intended. Those unscrupulous stacking guilds will find the competition to enter WvW maps, located on stackgate, confounded by the flood of other like-minded “players” trying to take advantage of WvW manipulaton.

Anet has caused this problem, and are directly to blame for the current situation by limiting access, and rewarding server stacking. Remove those limits, and watch the titan fall.

Why not ask your friends to transfer to your server?

Because it’s more expensive to move more people? Because they are worried they won’t get back to BG (my situation)?

If this was a serious question please try thinking next time lol…

that is pretty degrading of you to put this person down. so lets turn it on you.

If you didn’t want to spam 1 and actually have some skill you would get with your friends and do Fractals level 40 farm ( which you can do with out being on BG ) and farm up in a week to transfers 10 people in 3 weeks you can transfer 30 people to a lower end server that has a lower population.

That is if your only intentions are to play with your friends and not get carried in WvW by the good guilds in WvW that have 40 pugs on them for an easy win. I mean who am i to say you don’t have uber leet skills, and if so you should bring them to lower end servers and bring them up that way the community of GW 2 players can present ca challenge for the good guilds of BG….. but that is right 90% of the players join BG cause they don’t have skill and it is easier to spam 1.

Feels pretty crappy when someone puts you down for no reason. That person you put on blast had a fully logical answer for you, and NO it doesn’t cost your friends anything but TIME; you just didn’t like the answer and you and your friends; from your responses here, just want to be carried every week and say your part of a wining server.
