Title says it all. Waste of my time. I can’t do any event, so I give up.
Halloween was GREAT. This was a waste of my time, which I consider somewhat valuable
You didn’t install the OS on the SSD?
I don’t think OC is the solution. It’s a knee jerk reaction by many in this forum. Your problem is an intermittent drop right? So look for intermittent causes if possible.
In my experience, when it comes with gaming, we are the first line of defense, so to speak. If google does not offer up advice, than the next step is self diagnosis. Customer support is limited in my experience.
One thought is to try disabling everything you can think of on startup, and try running like that. If that does not solve the problem, keep everything disabled you can, and start looking for uneeded processes. Using google and taskmgr, and trial and error, you can often determine if a process is really needed, and if not kill it. This is assuming the problem is caused by a running process interfering with the game. If it’s not that, then hardware is the next potential cause I can think of.
Seeing how it mostly runs, I would check to see if something is overheating with some monitoring tool. That could force throttling of CPU and/or GPU.
Maybe some process is starting up and killing performance, such as an anti-virus program.
This has nothing to do with Nvidia cards. A friend of mine on a trial account is having the same problem. He has an ATI card and 32 bit XP.
He was playing before the patch today. He had to log out for the update. After his client updated he was unable to get past the launcher. The game doesn’t start.
Possible this issue has nothing to do with using a 32 bit version though?
Best connection to worst.
DisplayPort > DVI > HDMI > VGA
DVI and HDMI should be almost identical, at least in theory. HDMI is like DVI, but with audio added, which is why DVI to HDMI adapters can work.
One difference I do know of, is that HDMI (the last version I know of) did not support higher than 1080. Dual link DVI probably does ( 1080 with dual link ( http://www.datapro.net/techinfo/dvi_info.html .) That does not make DVI better than HDMI as such. If you needed audio to your display for some reason, DVI won’t do that.
As for Display Port, I know little about it. It probably supports better than 1080 though, as it’s a newer standard. Have to love “progress”

New rig for GW2, seeking 120fps mark in WvW

With regards to SSD, I just copied the game folder to my C: drive which is an SSD from a HD. Seems to be this reduces the stutter you see when turning quickly in a new area. I see no benefits to load times so far.

WvW is more using the CPU then the GPU you should atleast get a i7.. if you really want 120 FPS you should get a multi-processors motherboard and i dont even know if GW2 supports more then 1 processors
GW2 does not benefit from more then four cores based on the feedback in these forums. I have seen no evidence hexa-core would help, let alone dual CPUs
“Patch me Seymour!” Or maybe that was “Feed me”
It might be nice if Arena could post a link to a reliable post explaining how to reduce RAM usage. Not sure why it’s crashing, as opposed to thrashing to/from the swap file, but I will take their word for it.
One thing a 32 bit user could do, is to maybe try to reduce their resolution/settings to see if that helps (but I don’t know if that helps.)
Another is to goto the startup programs (there’s explanations of how to do this in various places) and reduce that to the minimum needed to play. Another would be to adjust windows settings to use less memory (there’s probably decent explanations of that online as well.)

Even overclocked to 4.7 Ghz on an Ivy bridge CPU with a dual GTX 670, I can get nowhere near 120 in WvW. Or large PvE battles. This on best appearance with 1080p rez.
Your goal might be unrealistic in the next year.
And cores won’t matter for this game in my experience. So no benefit from hexacore I suspect.

Not all mobso can do 16/16. Mine can’t. I kind of hoped there’s not a significant hit with 8/8 vs 16/16.
Overclocking using software makes sense as you can have custom profile for different situations. I have a custom profile for GW2 in Asus Evo tool (or whatever that’s called.)
For example, I can OC to 4.7 Ghz for GW2. But that’s not going to work well if I wanted to run stability on Prime 95. GW2 only uses a few cores, so I can aggressively OC it, knowing heat won’t be as much of an issue.
hd is often consider to be 1920×1080 (in fact, in the TV industry, so was 720.) That is supported by VGA, HDMI, DVI and other standards as well.
So I am not sure what you are asking. You can’t set your rez to 1080? Or you bought a higher than HD monitor such as 2560?
(edited by michaeljhuman.3940)
Of course, these people blaming the “lazy developers” have never seen the codebase, and did not work on the project, so they are guessing.
Also, if you have not worked in software development, you should be aware that many decisions are not made by the people writing the code ( the developers); management sets schedules and determines priorities.
I would guess game companies have learned to differentiate between people who never seem happy, and legit complaints.
Always seems like there’s more negative comments in forums than positive – the happy people, are perhaps too busy enjoying the game
I have not seen many bots lately. I can’t think of anything bots ever prevented me from doing. They were a visual distraction though, and made the game less pleasant to play for that reason.
Finding the game to be a grind, now that all is left is WvW explorations to get to 100%. Admittedly I played a LOT of GW 2, and there’s no reason to expect the fun to last forever.
I tried to find people to do a dungeon and failed. I have tried PvP, but the battles seem repetitive, and my elemental caster seems fragile, and if you die, the distance you have to run back to the battle can be stupid long.
Farming seems a bit pointless. as there’s no real gear improvements left short of Legendary, which does not seem worth the time.
I tried an alt, but I just don’t get a kick out of learning a new playstyle – this is not the game’s fault, I have never much enjoyed playing more than one character.
I know they will add stuff. I just wonder what’s left that’s fun, for me. I understand different people like different things – I guess I mainly enjoy exploring, and that’s drawing to a close with World Explorer being 96% or so.
Is GW2 still not optimized for GPU yet?

You can throw any CPU at GW2 and it won’t be enough. A 560 Ti/570 can probably play the game at max, but then you’re left with a client that doesn’t play well with many CPUs.
IMO, the game is 100% playable on my system. Admittedly, I can’t hold 60fps. But I am not sure it’s realistic to expect 60fps in large battles, PVE or WvW.
Some people do seem to be having issues, and I don’t know how much luck they have had getting Arena to look at their issues. I don’t see this fps variations some people do every time they patch (knock on wood.)
None of my friends complain. Even friends with 3 or more year old systems. Admittedly some people have had serious fps issues, but some of them tracked it down to a problem on their system.
It might help to post the details of what you are experiencing.
I would look for another cause other than changing servers for any change to CPU load and RAM usage.
I admit I find it hard to understand why 60fps is needed. I don’t know where the exact point of unplayability is, but for me it never happens in this game – it’s always playable unless there’s network issues.
I experience no anxiety when the fps drops, because the game still feels smooth. The only time I experience obvious stutter is when I turn too quickly, and only in some cases such as porting to a new area.
Not saying some people are not more sensitive to fps than others, but I am puzzled by how that makes the game totally unplayable as a few people imply. It’s just a game after all
(edited by michaeljhuman.3940)
Can you monitor your GPU, to see if it’s throttling? I guess the CPU could also be throttling too. Makes me wonder if something is overheating and throttling.
Sounds like the difference is the rez, I run at 1080.
I am surprised at your Lion’s arch fps, if on 1080p at max rez. I can’t manage 60fps in the worst parts of Lion’s arch.
I run an overclocked i7 Ivy at 4.6 Ghz with two GTX 670s.
Curious what resolution you run at?
(edited by michaeljhuman.3940)
That seems like possible file corruption to me. Seems pretty serious to get a C runtime error like that.

I had read that the game used Umbra. Be interesting to know, via profiling, where the game threads are spending all their time. I guess it’s possible Umbra is one of the biggest chunks of time. I think I know what occlusion culling is, but I lack the background in graphics to understand the computational complexity of occlusion culling.

Ok, it is not fact, you are right. but explain to me how a gaming rig, that pretty much handles every other high end game out there (90+ FPS), gets a great 3dMark score, does poorly at times in gw2. I mean 20-30 fps in wvw, and 30 in other areas of the game.
It actually is like a kick the gut. Nice system, spent a lot on it, did a fair amount of work, but our game, well, just wont do well. hahaha. I can overclock my cpu, and I will, but I think that their programming is very unefficient if this rig cannot handle it.
I don’t know why, but it seems possible it’s because of needs this game has that other games don’t. The game tracks a lot of moving objects such as players, enemies and NPCs. It has huge zones, and does not seem to use “fog” to reduce draw distance (near as I can tell, but I am no graphics expert.) Just to name some.

I agree, reduce reflection settings. Otherwise, improve your storage performance. SSD is an option, Possibly defragging. This sounds like a typical data load issue, rather than a CPU or GPU issue – the game can’t get data fast enough.
I see this too, but usually only in cases where the game has not had time to load enough data for a zone.

Have you done some analysis with tracert (I think that’s the tool used to look at the hops.) That might help nail down where the problem is along the line.
My gameplay even in large WvWvW battles is smooth, and my GPU setup is slightly below the 690.
A fps drops seems expected in large battles. If the game is CPU limited in these cases, which there’s evidence for, your high end GPU is under utilized. It doesn’t bother me as the gameplay is still smooth for me.
You might get some improvement when you can OC. I am running at 4.6 Ghz with an i7 3770.

How can you assess the optimization without seeing the code and having worked on it? I don’t accept that is as easy as some people in these forums make it sound. You are of course free to speculate, but how can you state it as fact?

On my computer, GW seems to make heavy use of two cores. Those cores aren’t ever going to park. So I have my doubts you will see any advantage to messing around with core parking.
You can imagine how you like, but you may find, like some of us have, that in spite of your good clock rate, you might still bottleneck by CPU.

Hello, Cool Hand. I do see what you call load stuttering, but only occasionally. I noticed that when increased reflections to all, it got worse; so maybe one solution is to reduce reflections.
But it does not happen much. Even when scouting for vistas where I look around a lot, I don’t see that too often.
It would be fatal in a racing game, heh. But seems acceptable to me in this game.

Only way to tell if it’s CPU bound is to look at the the threads running on each core, and the utilization for those cores IMO.
I would say that if some core is being utilized at nearly 100%, and the thread using the most time is a GW thread, there’s a good chance you are seeing a CPU bottleneck.

I would agree that it’s not as simple as stating you would only see a CPU bottleneck with generation differences.
My CPU and GPU are recent, and I am pretty sure the CPU is bottlenecking in some spots on the map in PVE. This because of measurements, and because of how I can normally get high fps except in some spots – in those spots I don’t see the GPU being hammered…so I suspect CPU limiting.
Thanks! Chantry did the trick. Would maybe never have found that. Note to the person asking this, make sure you are not confusing the deadend waypoint with this one…you have to enter the instance via the portal, and if it says 0/1, you don’t have it.

I can hold 60fps (min) in almost any area in the game. I have an i7 3770 OC to 4.6 Ghz, and dual GTX 670 cards. 1080p highest settings w/ reflections set to terrain & sky.
Even in WvW it’s smooth.
There are places on the map where I have surprisingly low fps, but they are the exception.
Ok. Take for example one of my weapon skills. This says it does 1000 or so burning damage over 4s. That seems quite low compared to what I calculate base burning damage to be.
I play an elementalist
On the attack tooltip, I have a very low condition damage of 39. My secondary weapon alone has over 70. So I figure that number is useless.
And surely some of my character’s skills and stats apply as well, so it seems like I need to know on a per skill basis.

It’s odd how many patches result in people having fps issues. Obviously countless people don’t see this.
It would be nice if Arena.net could figure this one out. Seems to be one of the most common issues reported here.
Seems like there should be some solution for you, but I can’t think of anything obvious. I can only suggest trying anything any sane seeming person posts that helped them (of course there’s been some whacky “fixes” I was highly skeptical about)
Would this help? People with fast SSD setups still have load lag. Maybe it would help with stuttering when doing a fast turn, but mostly I don’t see that ( unless I have reflections set to all)
switching sound device in windows does not switch GW2 sound

Posted by: michaeljhuman.3940
Do you mean that GW 2’s default sound device does not follow changes to the window’s default sound device?
Simple solution, if so (and I seem to recall running into that as well.) Bring up the GW2’s options, select sound, select the desired device.
IMO, never assume minimum requirements will manage to run any software well. Just my thoughts after years of experience.
Just because you can wear the minimum amount of flair, doesn’t mean your manager won’t give you a lecture (for those who have seen the movie Office Space.)
If you don’t know how to install a HSF (Heat sink fan,) I thought I should point out that closed loop coolers like the H60 are more work than the HSFs. You might prefer, for a first time job, to NOT do an H60/H80.
You mentioned you did not know how to install an HSF. There are almost certainly videos on you tube along with sites with pictures and text. I am not skilled mechanically, but I figured out how to do these things on my own, so it’s not too hard. Just be patient and read all instructions.
Reflections all is the number one fps killer based on my own experiements. Terrain and Sky is more friendly.
