Low level traits and leveling up professions

Perhaps the conflicting reports are evidence that the premise of your testing—that choice is merely an illusion—is flawed.

Everything is viable, because every stat helps you in some way. This is why you should ignore the stats and focus on traits you like—the stats always help, but the traits help make the gameplay match your preferred style.

I am always willing and ready to be proven wrong, which is why I made my post, to see if anyone can share stories of traits actually increasing things by a noticable amount.
every game is different and maybe traits as well.
like I am tempted to make a leveling build with a +toughness +vitality for a theif or elementalist to see if they dont die as fast.

but one thing I challenge anyone to dissaprove is that “everything is viable”
every MMO has pitfalls of useless skills and abilities you should not put points in.

Like so far no one has suggested stacking +healing or stacking +condition damage for a leveling build. I also think that +crit change traits increase your crit chance by such small amount you will never notice anything.
I bet if I stacked one my characters with +healing he would be kittened no matter what the bonus skill offered by that trait line.

So far it seems that the choices boil down to either +toughness or +vitality that has been mentioned is good for surviving higher level enemies.
And I think that +power is good when fighting equal or lower level enemies which will greatly increase how fast you kill things and level faster.

Quote – “Ignore the stats your trait lines give you. Instead, focus on the traits themselves. I know on my engineer I could care less about the toughness I get from the toughness line. I take it for better turrets.”

Really? Ive always heard bad things about turrets. Wouldnt +Power be an overall better choice over just a buff to turrets? Are the bonus skills offered by traits that good that it doesnt matter what attribute they increase? Is it the same for other professions?

Ok so in your opinion using traits to increase toughness and vitality makes a noticable enough difference that you can take on higher level enemies and not die?

I am still not sure, so far survivability doesnt seem to be an issue, with +power battles are short and enemies die fast, for example I have +100 power on my engineer and his bombs kill everything fast, no problems dying.
But ive only gotten to lvl 20 so far and im sure things get more difficult.

Hello, im trying to find out more information about traits for low level professions. Just to make it clear, this isnt about lvl 80 or the higher levels, just how traits work when your leveling up.

Ive played many MMO over the years and the one thing Ive learned is that they all like to give you the illusion of choice. They may give you lots of choices of where to put points into things like talents, stats or abilities but in the end, because its the lower levels, its usually best to just focus on increasing your DPS since everything else will have only a barely noticable difference while leveling up.
Thats the same theory Ive applied to GW2 for applying traits.
So far, ive put all my trait points for every profession into increasing power(DPS)
It also doenst help that I have no idea what +10 does in relation to the stats it increases.
Does anyone have information about how much trait points increase stats?
Like how much +crit chance, damage mitigation, vitality, traits increase things?

For example, I am guessing that +toughness at lower levels decreases damage mitigation by such a small amount its not noticable, +condition damage is so small no point, +crit chance very small percentage increase, +vitality I am guessing you would have to put alot of trait points to see a large HP gain, points which would be better spent increasing DPS, same with +boon, or +healing. you wouldnt notice anything.

So are there any lower level traits worth putting points in that make a noticable difference? Or is power the best thing to put traits in for every profession?

Ive also noticed that you get extra bonus skills for the amount of points you put into a trait line, but so far, none of these seem to be strong enough to put points in just to get them.

Gem Store

I agree the gemstore is very bare right now with not a single thing that tempts me to spend money

Here is how to get me to spend money –
Style options – Top Hat, Pirate costume, sunglasses, ect.
Get rid of the no combat thing. Why is that there? who cares if my character is running around in a top hat or pirate costume. have it disabled only for pvp if that matters. But there is no reason for me to buy clothes that I can only use walking about a town.

Random dyes and Random pets – Why would I spend money on something that I dont know what I am getting? Its like going to a store and buying a “box of clothes” with no idea whats inside. I will never buy random items. That includes lockboxes or keys.
Give us a list colors and pets for purchase and then ill spend money.

So far the only thing that sounds like something I will purchase is when they eventually put a character customization and rename kit up.

Thats too bad that the Anet employee response was vague and didnt say yes or no to accented characters.
I read the list in the link provided and it didnt mention anything directly either.

Oh well, I had hoped that maybe this game I wouldnt have to see stupidly accented names, but I guess not.
I have already seen many names and some with accents over almost every letter.

myyth.6798

Hi, I want to start crafting but ive only played a couple weeks and have little resources.
My highest lvl character is lvl 15.
The problem is that you have to buy vendor sold materials like cooking supplies, tin ore and jute thread.
These all sell for 80 copper and I only have 12 silver. I dont know if I should be spending the small amount of money I have on vendor crafting materials.
Its too bad that there is this crafting money barrier for new players, I would have liked to level crafting from the start.
Should I wait till im higher level? What level is a good level to start crafting?

Quick everyone, this Alto-holic player here does need help!!
Hes talking crazy talk! About things like having a main!

A true Alto-holic does not have a main. I am beginning to worry about you!

Why do you want a main? What reason is there to just play one character?
What are you going to do when you reach lvl 80 with your main?
Do you really enjoy doing the same level cap content over and over again grinding away for gear, karma or whatever?
Isnt it more fun to have a variety of characters to choose from with different playstyles to do different content and personal stories of all levels depending on what your in the mood for?
Wouldnt it be boring logging in to the same character every day?

These are the questions you have to ask yourself!
Its all about what you find fun doing.

Well I was fishing for an Anet response since they were very nice to reply to the other two requests, but so far no luck.

It would give me some relief and less stress if I knew for sure that an option to change appearance will eventually happen. For now, the more I level up, the more I worry that I might end up getting stuck with my current appearance and have to start the character over.
Im already tempted to delete my lvl 15 Sylvan because I didnt realize the glow happens at nigth and now have this off color orange glow. Maybe its best to just delete now before going any further.

I of course would prefer a barber shop type thing you pay with game money, but I know this game has a cash shop, so I wont be suprised if it will end up costing gems.

Hello, I read the Anet response to the questions about race change and name change, both were a negative

So, how about an eventual appearance change option? Is that something that could be in the works for the gem store?

I am not sure if I picked the right hair and skin color for my mesmer now that I have new dye colors and my Chars horns are bugging me and my Sylvan glow is neat…but I think Im going to want to change it
Thanks!

Anyone Playing GW2 From Work?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

myyth.6798

I agree its not a good idea and if you get caught you will most assuredly get fired.
You are being paid on company time and are supposed to be doing company related things.
I am lucky because where I work there is lots of downtime so I do play GW2 at work. But, even then, I still keep it a secret that I play games. I have a laptop under my desk and I use a KVM cable that allows two computers to be plugged into the same keyboard/mouse/monitor, if the phone rings or a customer walks in…or the boss lol, i quickly tap scroll lock twice and the monitor screen changes from my laptop to the work computer.
I work in a storage facility and sit in an office for 10 hours a day with no breaks because I work by myself with no relief. I am not allowed to leave the building. So its up to me to create my own breaks during the day when its not busy. And sometime those breaks last for a couple hours of playing GW2 or some other MMO lol.
But I can be interrupted at anytime by a phone call or customer, so I can only do solo things and cannot group. And I have more than once came back to GW2 to find my character still logged in naked, gear all broken because I had to go afk quickly lol.

Someone tell me to stop deleting characters

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: myyth.6798

myyth.6798

Why stop at just deleting Norn and Human??

How about a Char!
They make fierce warriors!
I think you should try them out

I have the same problem with changing my mind about a character after Ive played and leveled up a bit. When I try out a new MMO the first character I make I usually always delete after I get a better feel for the game and learn more. It takes a couple tries before I figure out the right characters.

And I am assuming that in this game there will be no race changes since the racial story is connected with your character development, so whatever choice you make is permanent.

Mismatching character and story

in Personal Story

Posted by: myyth.6798

myyth.6798

Yes I actually like it that each of the races can be any profession without any restrictions.
The only one that kind of stands out as kind of weird to me is the Sylvari Necromancer. As a new player to the guild wars universe, I am curious what the lore reason for a main Sylvari character being a necromancer, because Sylvari look like a good natural plant type race and Necromancers seem to be undead and demon raising evil guys which doesnt seem to fit.

But its the starting area racial stories that I find mismatch certain professions. It seems like some of the racial personal stories are geared towards certain professions.
Like I have decided to continue with my Norn mesmer, even though the barbarian warrior voice still kind of bugs me, and I am now doing a quest to gather materials to craft a metal blade that can “cut through mountains” and test my might. But my Mesmer does not equip blades and uses a wooden staff to focus magic attacks. So I am not sure what my mesmer is going to do with this mighty blade when its crafted. Which causes me to be detached from my personal story since it doesnt seem to fit.

I also just made an asura to try them out and the storyline seems geared towards engineers, I am being sent out to repair and attack robots, everything looks mechanical. Even in character creation you are asked what your first invention was. For this storyline I have decided that my Asura Ranger really is an engineer that just happens to like pets and has a faithful companion!

The only racial story line so far that can fit any profession is the human one.
I havent yet tried out the other racial stories to see how they fit with all the professions.

A grueling decision.

Do first quest on all of them, press H, go to spvp and test all skills on golems. Find what you like.

That is really good advice!!
I just did that with my Mesmer, and wow! what neat spells and abilities, I cant wait to level this proff up.
And I did the same for my Guardian and bleah! half of his spells are heals, buffs or cures removing things, not at all what I was thinking. I didnt want to roll a support buff class. That saved me wasting time leveling that up, Im going to try a Warrior instead.
Now to go try all of the proffs!

Mismatching character and story

I am a new player and I think I picked a mismatching character and story. I made a Norn female mesmer and it feels out of place. She is running around in her skimpy purple panties and neglige in the middle of the arctic north with this butch sounding female voice that sounds like her name should be Bertha going on a big animal game hunt to prove her strength. Which doesnt really seem something a mesmer would do.
If I will be doing this kind of story till lvl 80 then I would want to re roll a human mesmer and instead make your standard barbarian theme character for Norn.

I suppose you could argue that followers of say, Raven might value cunning and mesmer illusions could fit well into that, but ultimately when I think of a typical Norn, I think of a hunter like Eir or a warrior like Jora from the old game. Apart from humans who are more jack of all trades, all the races have some professions that don’t meld too well with the culture. I guess ANet wanted everyone to play whatever combination they wanted, and anyway every society is going to have those who go against the grain.

But if you don’t feel comfortable as a norn mesmer and you’re still low level, why not reroll? It won’t take you that long to get to where you were if you haven’t started the faction stories yet. Human or asura feel like the most perfect fit for the class, but anything but Charr will do (you won’t have a frilly garter, but again the profession doesn’t really fit the culture, since they distrust mages anyway.

I made a Norn mesmer because I wanted a humanoid character but I already made a human engineer since dual pistol barbarian didnt fit, so Norn seemed the next best choice for a mesmer. I also had the idea of a northern raven witch, but the story doesnt match that at all.
The other reason is that I would like to see all the different starting areas and wanted to avoid doing the same human starting area a second time.

If I only have to do a barbarian themed storyline up to lvl 30 then thats not so bad.

But what about the voice? The butch barbarian female voice doesnt match. Will I be seeing cut scenes with my characters voice talking all the way to lvl 80? Are there any group cut scenes where other players will here my voice?

So far these seem to be the mismatching professions and racial stories –
Char – Thief, Elementalist, Mesmer or Necro
Norn – Mesmer, Engineer, Thief, any other casters
Sylvari – Necro, Engineer
Any others?

Hello, I was wondering how much your racial story affects your character later on.

Is this game like other games where you start your character in its racial starting area for the first 10-20 levels, then go off into the world and never see anything about your race again?
Or will my racial personal story carry throughout the levels up to 80?

I am a new player and I think I picked a mismatching character and story. I made a Norn female mesmer and it feels out of place. Daft question, but how is warrior ranged? I dismissed warrior cos I like ranged play most, so I really wanna know please.

Warriors are quite lethal ranged.

Can a Guardian be lethal ranged as well?

Sounds like maybe warrior is the best heavy armor choice if it gets lethal range, melee skills, and can be defensive as well.

Get slots, if you’re into alts.

But the top post has some misconceptions that will hamper good decisions.

There is no tank type.
There isn’t really a stealthy type — thief stealth lasts for just a couple of seconds.
Ranged dps — one of the strongest professions for this is the warrior.
Control-support type — if you’re in a dungeon, that’s at least part of what you’re doing.

All professions do all roles (cept for pet, that really is the ranger thing).

I will admit im carrying over assumptions about classes from other games, so thats intersting to find out what the classes are really about.

Warrior is a strong ranged DPS? I always thought of them as melee dps.
I got the idea that there is no tank in this game, but Gaurdian is the defensive heavy armor type and I always like to have one hardy tough to kill character.

No stealth type? What makes the thief different from other DPS then?

If all the professions do all the roles…then I guess its just a matter of the how they do it and what style they use. But some must be better at some roles then others?
Like a light wearing type wouldnt last long holding aggro?

Dabble is my suggestion. Pick 3 you know are slam-dunk professions you want to play and use your last 2 slots to explore your option. As a fellow altoholic this is my thought and what I did.

Wont tell you which ones tho your favs may not be my favs and I don’t want you to miss out on what may be your “happy place”

pick 3? but but…there is 8!
:)
Ok I guess the 3 playstyles I usually like are ranged DPS, pet type, and heavy armor type

so maybe the 3 for sure are the engineer because it was fun shooting things, and ranger because I always like pets (though having a hard time choosing between ranger and necro) and guardian so I have a defensive type
but control types are also fun….and if the mesmer is like the EQ illusionist, I really enjoyed that
and stealth can also be fun

So hard to decide!

How does it cost for extra character slots? Funny how there isnt any mention of purchasing extra slots in the character selection screen.

Hello, it looks like we only get five characters max and its just on one server only. (unless I am missing something)

Any advice on the five classes of the eight you should pick to cover all of the different playstyles? (I am an alt oholic, dont like playing just one character)

This is what I am thinking -

1)Ranged dps type – Engineer (for something different since elementalist seems like your typical fireballing fantasy wizard)

2)Tank heavy armor type – Guardian

3)Stealth – Thief

4)Pet type – Ranger

5)Control support type – Mesmer

This means I would not have a warrior, elementalist or Necro. Necro is the one im unsure about, usually Necromancers are always fun…..

I have the same problem, my guess is its a graphic cards issue, maybe I have to update my drivers or something. I am using a laptop gaming graphics card so it could also be a performance issue.
