Been away from the game for a while as I didn’t like how it was being fashioned more for hardcore WoW raiders.
I was coming back for a look to see how the game is progressing & what Im seeing is old rehashed content.
Meanwhile the whinging raiders who constantly complained about champ trains & anything else that helped a casual make some progress are being pandered to at the expense of everyone else.
Devs need to get off their knees in front of these ppl & get back to what your original vision was.

GW2 has left its original fanbase wanting & is now a poor manifestation of a great concept left pandering to the crowd from another game.

Ok if casual players are required to be so skilful, why do you nerf every build that becomes viable or popular?
Casual players have a hard time keeping up to all the gear/skill nuance changes at every turn. They don’t want to spend their time having to research their build every time they log in.
They could also be better equipped if the mats for their gear wasn’t so ridiculously overpriced from being required for ascdended also.
So before you all start expecting so much from them how about giving them a stable environment in which to work.
Is that too much to ask Josh?

I feel my server (RoS) is just as deserted as yours, while still not at the bottom of the list, but close. Most of Orr always contested, making it extremely hard to explore solo on a fresh char. Important world chain events rarely (close to never) get done such as the centaur/Modniir or Ogre Wars. I’ve never actually done the Oouo chain in Timberline or the Covington one in Bloodtide. Never. No players around or willing to do these. You can be on a mid-level map and shout in chat for help with anything, you’ll only virtually hear an echo as there’s no one around. Very dishearting. I chose this server as my only friend playing it at the time was here. Now he’s ready to jump ships to a big server, when I’ve found a home with a nice, casual guild I refuse to leave. Even the latest LW commonly fails, such as the Marionette, as we don’t really have the manpower to beat it outside of maybe primetime evening 8-10 timeslot.

Being from Devonas , I feel your pain.

Josh: Love the Marri- despite the frustration caused by watching a group of baddies fail.

Can I suggest a more focused training program for the individual for a future patch?

You’d need to make it essentially mandatory, either by rewards or locking Legendaries, level 80 or something behind it.

Have something that specifically teaches dodges, something that specifically requires trait swapping, something that specifically teaches positioning.

I’d love some harder content, and if the only way to get it is ensuring the playerbase is competent then it’s really up to you guys to actively push it forwards systematically and not just hope people pick things up while being carried by others.

The moment you do any of this, it stops being a game and becomes a job. It becomes work.

That isn’t fun, period.

I’m sorry, challenge seekers. The time of the WoW raid and excluding content from the masses is over. You can’t force people to get better. You can’t keep turning games into jobs.

I agree with you on excluding content from the masses for not having specific things…but they’re right on that open world players need to get a lot better. Dungeons, Fractals,

PvP, WvW, all of these require players to dodge, react quick, adapt, etc. You don’t see any of that in open world PvE, which is part of the reason for the less skilled players. In any of those fields, I have to keep aware of my surroundings, and use everything I can just to survive. Open world PvE however…I don’t even need to use half of the skill I have in those other fields, I don’t need to dodge much, I don’t need to be aware of my surroundings, that’s how much of a difficulty (and by extension, skill) gap there is. It’s time we brought open world PvE player’s skill level up.

Complete anything other than open world PvE, and you’ll see the skill level the average players of those fields are at, the skill level Anet made the Marionette for because they expect open world PvE players to also be at that level.

I did the hardcore raiding thing in multiple games. I picked up GW2 because it sold itself as AVOIDING those end game raiding conventions. I didn’t sign up to have to go find the cookie cutter raid spec du jour just to fight X boss on Tuesday and spend hours farming up #gooseberries to fight Y boss on Thursday.

Now we’re being told that oh hey, that whole raiding thing that was missing for the first year of the game? We meant to have it, it’s not our fault all our playerbase are bads.

I had my elite raider moment in the Sun. I don’t want to have to be a cutting edge player anymore to not be at a mathematical disadvantage to other players. It’s just frustrating that ANet is taking the offer of a game like this off the table this late in the game.

This is spot on.I have been playing the game since release 3.2k hrs.
The reason, I love the game but now with all the focus on pseudo wow raid bs its no longer the game that was delivered or promised.
I am guessing the next big thing added will be saving files of the encounters ala wow style where every attack is recorded & the unfortunate sop that is seen to be lacking in anyway is summarily harassed & then ditched.
Do I stick around & hope it doesn’t continue this way or just give up & quit now?

I suppose what it boils down to with me is a question of why the content needs to be an elite level challenge in the first place. Would it really be all that bad if an average group of players could win?

Not at all. The Marionette was not designed to be beaten only by “elite” players. We have an idea of where the average player is skill-wise, and placed the bar where we hoped would just a tad above that, in the hopes that they would have to stretch a bit. That stretching creates tension, which is the sweet spot in event-type content as far as I’m concerned. (as opposed to the abnegation style smooth sailing content that most of an MMO needs to be.) Without the tension new things get boring faster. Too much tension, (as seems to be your case) and people give up and the content is wasted on them. That seems to be your argument about this event.

Because the player base is a diverse lot, ANY amount of tension will frustrate SOME amount, causing them to be turned off. So fundamentally we have to ask ourselves if we want to ever ask the player to stretch, or keep them all in a happy abnegated state of chillaxing. Does the benefit to those who want some tension from time to time outweigh the frustration of those who don’t?

The other question that I hope is answered in the positive is this: Can the average player skill be raised by challenging content like this? We know that X% of players don’t know about traits. We know Y% never swap out their 7-0 skills to accommodate specific challenges. And there are probably dozens of other systems that go unused by some portion of the player-base. If even 10% of that group hits a challenge like the Marionette and the subsequent tension causes them to look into these systems and they learn a new depth to the game they otherwise never would have, I think that’s a win for everybody. The average skill level rises, and in turn, we devs can make more interesting events that utilize the depth of the systems we have.

Having said all that, if after a week the Marionette is still only being beaten 1 out of 10 times, then I would say we may have tuned it a bit too difficult. On the other hand, we don’t know how long it takes for the aggregate skill level of the player-base to grow. I don’t know how long it takes for information about traits and builds to disseminate to those who had previously never looked into them. As with all our content, we are closely watching and noting these things so that every future project can learn from it.

P.S. Because several people brought up the idea of buffing the other platforms when one succeeds, I thought I ought to let you all know that this has always been the case. When one platform’s power regulator is destroyed the players on the platforms adjacent get Electrify Aura which gives 60 seconds of protection, swiftness, regeneration, fury, might, vigor and retaliation.

If you want only people of a certain skill level or so involved to change their build for every fight I suggest you introduce a licence system that in the event of failure you cannot play this game as you are not deemed good enough for the game. This is elitism in its purest form.

I can do without this type of manipulation, I get enough at work thanks very much.

This idea of yours may work better with parity in the servers but that was destroyed by the cash grab for server transfers & the game is showing many signs of the damage that has caused. Keep creating this content for the big servers at the risk of losing many of your player base .ATM a lot of us are feeling very left out in the race to please the top end of town

I think the servers should have their own content difficulty now that a lot of servers have been decimated by transfers.
Big servers have harder content
Small servers need some dispensation, eg longer timers / lower diffulty.
Separate pve & wvw populations because they DO NOT translate to each other.
Since Boss week some of the servers have suffered horribly with not one ounce of love from Anet.
ITS TIME TO REROLL/MERGE SERVERS OR MAKE CONTENT DIFFICULTY SERVER SPECIFIC!!!

I don’t mind the loot. I don’t have 4-6 hours a day to game. And that’s fine. It would be ridiculous to ask for the same loot that “raiders” should get.

My problem is with the wait time behind these sorts of events. It’s a huge time commitment.

I think the connotation of ‘casual gamer’ has drifted to terribad from the actual meaning of someone who just doesn’t play as much. Now I am getting very fed up with the attitude that these sorts of events should be reliant on PuGs. That is an affront to actual casual gamers imo.

Sure it’s fine for bad players because they can keep spamming 1 and failing for the next hours in the hopes someone will carry them but I don’t get that luxury. I know a lot of folks in a similar boat.

These should be instanced events or at least scaled within reason. Folks who play casually actually have the most reason to be well geared, experienced in their class, and want to spend the least amount of time waiting around and depending on random players.

FYI people don’t “spam 1” its auto attack , whilst they look like that’s all they are doing they are casting other spells as well. You can also quit using the term PUG as derogatory vernacular for people not in your particular group or party whom you automatically deem unworthy

They could also make the content difficulty server specific.
Big servers want it hard
Small servers need dispensation of some kind, longer timers / less difficulty etc

It would be for everyone then, choose the difficulty you want & servers can complete at home.
If they want to live up to their own “this game is for everybody” hype then this is the way to do it rather than alienating a good portion of the community to cater to some.

I personally cannot believe that after creating such server disparity from Boss week on by letting anyone bandwagon to a few servers, that they release content that compounds the problems created by this whole mess.
Many servers now seem desolate on almost every map & have a very hard time even completing the changes to events like Jormag just to cater for those few huge servers. This is having a real negative effect on those smaller servers in that a lot of people will just guest instead of trying it in their own server.I think it is time for Anet to admit that server transfers had a detrimental effect on the game as a whole. Its time to either merge/reroll servers or make the content diffulty server specific.

If you consider that ascended weps the armour also came out you will see that the casual player is being forgotten.

A casual player doesn’t need Ascended Armour/Weapons at all, as casuals don’t run higher level Fractals.

Casual players do however play wvw where the top armour is almost a pre-requisite.
Also I decide what I want or need thanks very much.

Please stop trying to use Ascended armour as an excuse to accuse ANET of ignoring the casual playerbase. It’s pathetic.

The damage difference between Exotic and Ascended is so negligible that it only significantly affects PvP at higher skill levels. Do casual players play these? No.
Exotic is more than enough to stand your ground, perhaps even Rare.

You are in your right to decide what you want, but what you need is a different matter.

I was merely pointing out to the person that said “one boss doesn’t equal all” that all recent content release has been for the more hardcore players. For players still struggling to complete their full ascended set like myself who requires 300 of 1 material per day just for the time gated mats without even thinking of the others required to craft the components means either farming or buying which can be as much as 10g per day hence my struggle to to think wasting time on standing waiting for these new events for little to no reward is fun.
I primarily play wvw but we get locked out of improving out characters without being forced to play in pve in these time sinks .Dont even start me on our wvw server being destroyed by pve transfers.
I have almost 5k hrs play time on this game so no , Im not that casual either but I am halfway to my full set of celestial only to hear they will now be changing it & the concensus is that it will be rendered useless so please forgive me if im a little more than annoyed with the game as it stands today.
I don’t even feel like completing my set any more , in fact instead of playing I am here.

The only problem with the wurm being so hard is that Bob the level 37 ele thinks it was made for him. Perhaps a warning similar to ski slopes “EXPERTS ONLY” would have helped mitigate all this criticism of it.

I’ve spent way too many enjoyable hours on the wurm. The people it wasn’t made for hate it for mistaking it for general content.

It would be nice if we all could whittle away many hrs for zero rewards , however my time ingame is precious so I have to make every minute count. I don’t have time to stand around while everyone holds hands & sings songs pre event to feel co-ordinated.

Many of you seem to crave this mass co-ordination & communication & feeling of community, its quite simple to find, its called a life, go live it & let us play playable content LIVE not in 2 hrs. Thank you.

Making content for 5-10% of the player base while the rest get the facepalm is no good for anyone.

Ever since the new Teq came out there is a huge server disparity from server transfers & it also affects WvW in a negative way.

Same people kill kill the hard content over & over while the rest of us are left in the dust.
Why use the same formula for the living story? This should be content for all to complete in their own time not run by timers & the rest of the community when there is such huge disparity in servers.

I want to play the kitten ed game not research game mechanics & search for a server where it may be completed.
The last story patch was good, personal instance for personal achievements not the shambles we have today.

Low success event + no loot from mobs = Time/Gold sink ?

Having events that basically require the same people turning up to all servers & running them is in no way any form of “balance”. This game is further & further from the grasp of the common player. The toil of making ascendeds is bad enough, then we find out that there will be stat changes which will potentially make a particular set unviable for the toon you busted your butt to create.

Now we have an event with a high failure rate where there is a multitude of mobs but no loot. Since when did obtaining loot for efforts become a no no?

Farming mobs instead of trying to do an event is one thing, getting no loot from an event that is expected to fail is totally unfair.

Its a game , its meant to be fun, This is more like work than fun.
