Replace Body Shot -> Flanking Shot

Dodgeroll/leap into the direction you’re facing & fire a shot that puts 5 stacks of vulnerability on the target for 5-10s. (4 initiative, about the distance of SB #3 or nontarget S/D #3, 3/4th of a dodgeroll)

If we are going to add a new ability like that, a short duration vulnerability stack seems like such a waste. If it was 10 seconds, sure. But, Body Shot now is 6 seconds, and it’s a waste of initiative. The evade would be nice, but I’d rather have a short duration of weakness that makes being in melee range with pistols a little safer. Not too long, but something to enable the Thief to get some range without worrying about getting their teeth knocked in. And obviously not long enough of a duration to encourage bad habits.

Or possibly immobilize.

I think Anet just needs to decide what they want pistols to bring to a fight.

Daggers and Sword are pretty straight forward. With P/P you would assume it’s a DD set, as the heavy hitter is Unload. But, the stealth move is a quick stacking bleed ability. No one in their right mind is going to stack power and precision for a hard hitting Unload, and then use Sneak Attack as anything more than a filler. Even tho Thieves stealth abilities are supposed to be a big part of the profession.
It doesn’t make sense to me. To have a weapon set that screams DD, and then have a condition applying special ability.

Like I said. Anet needs to make up their mind. Make pistols condition based weapons with higher condition damage and duration on Vital Shot, or remove the bleeds from Vital Shot and Sneak Shot and up their direct damage.

For me, I hope it’s a made into a conditions play-style. Daggers and Sword are the DD weapons already. SB is the utility/AOE weapon. Pistols should be conditions.

(And if they decide to make pistols the condition weapon of choice, Unload should stack bleeds, like Sneak Attack, but the DD should be toned down.)

Personally I’d like a stealth option with dual pistols. Remove body shot and add in a reverse heartseeker style jump attack that moves away instead of towards the target. In a perfect world Unload would stack bleeding.

I think if Unload was to stack bleeding, it may have to be toned down in damage. Which I do not think anyone would want.

As far as Body Shot becoming a reverse Heartseeker, I am not sure about that. P/D already has a move like that, and it barely gets used at it is. Considering C&D is a much smarter ability to use. Tho… if it was a leap ability, with Black Powder it would allow stealth. Like Heartseeker + Black Powder.

That would be hard. The entire design is flawed. It has this horrid condition/direct damage split without actually adding utility or support and the damage is far from impressive.

P/P is only used with direct damage. It’s useless compared to P/D when it comes to condition damage due to the lack of stealth, vital shot only keeps up 4-5 stacks and won’t kill anything. The only source of direct damage the set has is Unload, which has a huge initiative cost and does pathetic damage. #1 does pathetic damage. #2 is worthless as vulnerability stacks don’t last long enough to stack a decent amount. #4 is alright. #5 is terrible as it allows you to live but destroys any chance of you doing damage.

P/D is alright with the 3s revealed “buff” (lol). You still have to spec into condition duration to be able to stack even a decent amount of bleeds, however. This spec forces you to go at least 20 into DA, 30 into SA. It will never kill anything fast and is hard-countered by a lot of specs.

Only way I can think of is moving #4 to #2 and designing a new #4 for utility or damage.

I agree that Headshot should be a staple no matter what off-hand someone chooses. Moving it to slot #2 would be a welcomed change. Maybe not for D/P or S/P (LOL PISTOL WHIP)Thieves, but it would make P/D a lot more viable. I almost never use Body Shot, it’s close to useless. The only time I do use it is when there is burst coming in from other player.

I do believe that the Revealed nerf did hinder the P/D spec a great deal. I used to run into P/D thieves all the time, now it is hardly ever. It may be a lot better in WvW where you can actually have the chance to 1v1 for a decent amount of time. It’s just not that feasible for roamers in Spvp. It takes way too long to take someone down alone.

I guess we will all have to wait to see where Anet takes the Pistol. If they decide to make it a DD weapon with a little bit of condition damage on top, or a Condition damage weapon, with a little DD. Right now it’s right in the middle. Not great for one or the other.
I hope it’s turned into the condition weapon of choice for the Thief. If I want to do DD I can go with the dagger or sword. And Body Shot should be removed or changed. Maybe make it into a weakness debuff with the same duration. It would make more sense in regards to a condition weapon, imo.

I am currently in the midst of leveling my second Thief to 80. I made this new Thief with the explicit purpose of being P/X in spvp, and frankly it is a lot of fun.
I was running a 0/10/30/0/30 build before the patch, but I have not gone in and modified it due to the increased damage being thrown around. (I am thinking I may have to go 15 into Acrobatics, I don’t know.)

I hear people mention that P/P is not that great as a main weapon set, and I agree. There is no way to get into stealth, other than utilities, the 2(3) seconds of stealth on Steal, and Instinctual Response(which is not an SPvp trait, imo.)
P/D on the other hand is a really nice weapon set. Well, as long as you are not going for burst, which I hardly ever do. Matched with D/D, it can stack plenty of bleeds, and offers you the ability to melee if your opponent throws up a projectile reflect.

Frankly, other than wanting a faster Vital Shot, I am having a little difficulty thinking of ways to improve the pistol. But, even a faster Vital Shot may make a condition built Thief, like myself, a little overpowered.

Anyway…
If you were to improve P/P or P/D, how would you go about it?

Don’t bother basing the build on the stats shown. I didn’t include runes or jewelery.

This is what I like for just going around areas trying to get 100% world completion. I do not know much about WvW, but I am sure I can just swap a few traits/skills and be okay.

Skill wise that’s almost what I’ve been using. I just use dual pistols, and use rocket turret instead of net. What made you go with rifle? As for traits, I still need to buy the second two books (level 70 right now and still just using the first rank of traits). I’ll have to give it a look later when I can actually see then in game.
Trait selection is mainly what I’m looking for with builds.

With Rifle, Net Turret, the tool-belt utility, AND the cripple on immobilize, you can keep a mob/player locked down. Plus, the rifle adds a CC removal with Overcharged Shot + a gap opener. An extra bleed with Blunderbuss for the extra 5% damage. And a gap closer + opener in Jump Shot.

I find that FT works a lot better if you turn the auto-targeting off and just fire without having a target.

Turning off auto-target is always a good idea. No matter the class.

However, you do want to target at least one person in range for Flame Blast.
See here:

Flame Blast also always required a target unless you are above your opponents or standing on a slight upward slope, else-wise the fire ball just falls in to the ground.

To be completely honest, the Flamethrower Kit is the only reason why I play my Engineer. Grenades, Bombs, etc. and the normal weapons/sets are pretty meh to me.
It takes a little while to used to the things you can with the camera, but very worth it, imo. I am not even sure I would want ANet to improve/fix it.

The reality.
A) 3 Mesmers Phantasms could hit 3k Each vs 1 Pet could that could hit about the same.
B) Illusions could be created over and over again. Pets? 2 Pets,1 Pet Active. Thats it.
C) Stealth make opponent lose target. A million Dodge wont.

Listen to Swagger.1459 Comet. He’s absolutely right there.
No point sPvping with a broken class where you could do way better with others.

C) A Ranger can stealth which is a lot more than most classes are capable of.

If you mean the one trait in the WS line that only goes off when cc’ed then yeah, sure, they can stealth every thirty seconds as long as you spend 20 points in that line.

Not exactly something to brag about, unless you happen to be into conditions/bunker builds.

Exactly how am I supposed to fight thieves?

in Ranger

Posted by: replicacloned.2809

replicacloned.2809

I did my first proper PvP on my ranger today and I do not see what everyone is complaining about. I finished my daily in the first match and halfway done with my monthly just after 10 more.

I run an SB, GS build. I started my first game and realised, I was running LB/GS instead, I adjusted my pets accordingly and charged in. LB is amazing in sPvP.

Hit 3 and send in your pet to maul the hell out of them, use auto attack while they come for you(or not if they are ranged). Wait for them to dodge once and unload rapid fire. When my jag is almost dead, I switch to my fern hound for knockdown on its first hit and swoop in with my GS.

Stealth thieves, I always Point Blank the second they appear, they immediately dodge on getting up expecting a rapid fire, but I hit auto-attack instead, I follow up with Rapid Fire, only two shots miss and boom, they’re on the floor. During all of this my Jaguar is mauling the hell out of them, and I’m saving my Fern Hound for a regen and a knockdown when I need it. My only issue is with condition builds, since I have no removal(don’t want it either). I use knight’s and dolyak so it takes some effort to take me down.

Mesmers, I just dodge a lot and try to find the main one and keep on him, Barrage, dodging, Swoop, Maul, basically all AoE and mobility is your friend.

One day does not equal a proper Ranger experience in spvp. Nor does it for any other profession. It’s great that you had fun on the first day, but do not count on it being a constant experience. There will be some days where you will want to rage quit, and others where it seems you are immortal. It really depends on the stock of players on any given hotjoin spvp match server. Just don’t think that this one experience is evidence that everyone is whining over nothing, or that the Ranger profession does not have problems. Sooner or later you will see what people are talking about. It may not be as extreme as some make it out to be, as personal skill does come into play. But, the Ranger class does have some major issues. And other professions do have a leg up in pvp over others. Thieves and Mesmers are prime examples. Hence the reason why they are so popular in pvp.

Also, unless they removed the daily requirement in the last 48 hours, you have to complete three games in order to complete the daily.

If the more hotkeys there are equals harder to play…that would mean that games like WoW, Tera, etc. etc. have better pvpers when compared the GW2 player-base. Just for the fact that they have a whole lot more buttons to press. So a really good pvper in one of those games would automatically be better than a really good GW2 pvper. Which of course isn’t the way it works.
It’s practice and patience that determines the good from the bad, IMO.

Bunkers and rank points

in PvP

Posted by: replicacloned.2809

replicacloned.2809

Backcapping is a lot different than standing on your close point watching your personal points go up while no one attacks you.

Also, if you’re in a hotjoin or solo queueing, it’s hard to know where the enemy team is because there’s literally no coordination there. People are going to be even more likely to just sit on a point.

I tend not to bother worrying or fretting about the actions of other players in a hotjoin. If I wanted dependable team mates I would join a pre-made. And this is coming from someone who hotjoins the majority of the time. If winning meant more glory than it does now, or more than a gear box with a RNG, I would probably take it a tiny bit more seriously.
Right now, hot-joining for me is for fun, farming glory, getting better at my class, and experimenting with new builds. Winning is nothing but an ego boost, but only in very close games.

I just think any way we can encourage more people to play spvp should be encouraged. If it’s not extra glory for babysitting points, fine. Whatever. Gear sets that can be chosen with glory points, and not just boxes with the random chance of getting a piece of that set would be an excellent start, imo.

Oh, you want to buy 10 gold boxes to try and get a few pieces of armor of a certain set?

Best I can do is 1 piece of the set you want and a dozen or so pieces of armor you can’t wear or already have. So sorry, have a finisher as a conciliation prize.

Bunkers and rank points

in PvP

Posted by: replicacloned.2809

replicacloned.2809

Since spvp revolves around taking and keeping points I do agree that defenders should get a bonus if they stick around to defend it. Not too many extra points, but not zero and not more than someone would get on the front lines downing/stomping.

To those that think that guarding would automatically hinder your team, well I guess it’s a matter of perspective.
If you have a bunker sitting on your near point, and the other 4 team members are up against the 5 opposing team members at a certain point, all you have to do is send your bunker over to which ever other point is currently in favor of the enemy. That will either cause the opposing team to back off a little to take back their point, or keep the enemy who just spawned away from the original point in contention, and/or possibly give you three points. Or if you lose the point that was having the large battle , you have two again as you just took the other teams original. And since you are originally outnumbered, you will probably have team mates way-pointing, at which point they can cover the near point until a new plan is started.

You can either have a team that has defenders or you can play aggressively. It’s up to the team, and there are strategies for almost every formula. But, people should be rewarded for playing defensively. There are people, including me, who would enjoy that sort of game play. And adding more rewards for play-style choice in spvp wouldn’t exactly be a bad thing. Spvp in this game is flat-lining. Opening up new ways to encourage different play-styles with an incentive to do so is always a good idea, imo.

Should Rally exist in spvp?

in PvP

Should Rally exist in spvp?

No, it should not.

This part of the game is already filled with zergs. People know that traveling in packs increases the probability of taking a point successfully, just like most games. I am not saying that traveling in packs is bad, strength in numbers right?
What I am trying to say is, in this game every class has the ability to become a bunker spec. Some classes are better fitted than others. Which means if one team is traveling around in 5 v 5, with 3-4 people, and two of those people are a guardian in a bunker and an elementalist in a bunker spec, it already takes every available person on the other team to down one of those specs in a timely manner. But, it doesn’t end there.
With mesmers, thieves, and elementalists you not only have to down them first, but then you have to deal with them moving after the fact. And it only takes one person on their team to rez them back to life. While it takes preplanned tactics of the attacking team to make sure someone has quickness and stability handy to make sure to stomp said person before their teammates are able to heal them back up.

The math does not add up to me. We have classes that take 2-3 people to get down before reinforces show up, 2-3 people to plan beforehand who will not use what abilities to make sure to get the stomp, only to have one person able to bring the downed player back to fighting…that’s some kittening kitten right there, no?

Either ANET needs to remove down state so that when your HP runs out you are dead. OR, remove every ability in the down state except for bandage. So that if you actually are able to down that elementalist, or whatever, that took you 2-3 or more people to get down, you do not have to deal with all that effort being wasted due to one person being able to rally their teammate after said class was able to move to a position that was conveniently close to them.

It’s in no way fun for me(and it seems most people) to put in the effort of killing someone, only to have that person down me while they are in down state, and because of the class they play they are either able to move far enough away for me not to be able to attack them and heal up, or for their pet to rally them, or for some reinforcements to show up rally their teammate and make my effort completely futile.

(I also think it’s kittened when I or the person I am fighting gets rallied after someone you happened to have tagged or hit in passing gets stomped at another place on the map. I could be completely wrong about this, but what is the range on rally? The entire map?
I mean if someone is healing to rally you it’s like 2 feet of distance, but if you happened to tag someone during battle, run far enough away to not be hit by any ranged attacks, you can still be rallied if a person on the other side gets stomped more than 1200 range away? What’s up with that?)

Upcoming changes to stealth (SoTG)

in Thief

Posted by: replicacloned.2809

replicacloned.2809

Maybe because I do not rely on chain stealth, I do not think think this will hinder me playing my Thief. Obviously I use stealth in circumstances where I am about to die and need to run away. I also use it to stealth a fallen ally and myself to rez. But, other than that I can’t think of an instance where I depend on chain stealth to beat someone.
If you are a Thief that loves to run a build where you are stealthed 80% of a fight, using conditions + C&D over and over and over to wear down your opponents without ever worrying about dying, then sure, I bet you are not too happy with this change.

Even if this changes my desire to run as a D/P thief, then I will just move onto another weapon set that’s less dependent on stealth.

(Being that I PUG 100% of my spvp/tpvp games(and don’t WvW), I usually only see two types of thieves. The BS → HS till you are dead Thief, and the condition stacking, I’m just going to stealth over and over till you are dead Thief. Rarely are there other builds that I see. Yesterday I saw a Pistol Whip Thief, it blew my mind as I couldn’t think of the last time I ran up against one of those specs.)

I don’t think it’s that bad but you can see where your tatstes lie. make an asura. zoom out to your desired p.o.v. and see if it’s tolerable to you. Personally, I tend to be zoomed further in on my asura becasue it gives me more of an asura p.o.v. when playing.

I could try that. Normally I like to have the camera zoomed out to max in this game (which in GW2 really isn’t that far.) But, if I can find a happy medium that allows me to enjoy my Asura and still see enough of the environment around me, I should at least give it a shot.

Hello,

I am looking to come back to GW2 after a few months off. I have not really dove into the Asura (or Sylvari for that matter), but a friend of mine who has similar tastes as me says their small size really makes it hard to see details. Details in armor, that is.

He says as a Warrior, even tho he loved the animations and running around with a two-handed sword/hammer, once he got higher in levels he got tired of having to zoom all the way in to enjoy his new dyes or armor. That while running around, he could have been wearing a dish towel and it would have all looked the same.

Now, I am looking to start a Necro, so obviously they wear cloth armor.

I was wondering if the cloth armor is different compared to heavy armor as far as detail?
Or is it just a race problem in regards to anything armor on an Asura is going to be hard to see without zooming in?

You dont wanna go any lower than the 650ti imo.
Its already lower than the lowest ‘gaming’ gpu.

Keeping a gaming rig even remotely up to date is relativly pricy compared to a simple media pc.

If you buy low end performance parts, expect to upgrade often. If you buy mid to higher end parts you can get away with upgraidng less often. The cost is the same in the long run, it just depends on how much money you have free at the time.
(edited for space)

I do appreciate your advice, let me just say that first.
However, you and I are looking at this two different ways.

You say that you spend between £1000 – £1500 every four years for your computer needs. If I use today’s conversion rates, that is between $1600 and $2400.
Now, if I were to add up my last two computers, video cards, and other stuff that I have bought in the last five years or so, it would be at most $1500. Which in pounds is just shy of £940. Needless to say neither of these computers would be considered gaming rigs.

That is not including the games that I bought in those five years. Which by the way totals to 3. WoW: Cataclysm expansion, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and Guild Wars 2.

I only upgrade my computer out of complete necessity. I upgrade because either a piece fails/starts to fail like in this case with my video card fan making too much noise and I have no other option other than buy a new one, or I have to buy a new computer because it’s more cost effective than just replacing the parts. If I am really interested in playing a new MMO, then sure, I may even upgrade then. But that is rare.

I do not upgrade because my FPS drops below 30 in some situations. I do not upgrade because I can not play a game on high/ultra settings at all times without issues.
Would I like to play this game at max settings or as close to it as possible? Sure.
Do I want to pay for the technology that allows me to do so? No.
I am simply not invested enough in playing video games to justify buying hardware that makes sure I can play games at or close to max settings.
(I do not care if I can not see every blade of grass, or some other cool details that only people with gaming rigs can see. That’s not important to me. Making sure I can play the game is. Making sure I don’t have to set every setting to low to just to play, is. Right now every one of my settings is at medium, except character detail and environment detail which are set to high. And the only time I get heavy lag/low FPS is when I am in LA when there is an event on. So it’s not like I am barely able to enjoy the artwork or game-play.)

And even tho I have been playing this game since launch day, I have yet to set foot in a dungeon, a WvW match, or even a sPVP match. So this may or may not change things for me as far as whether or not my stubbornness on not buying the “best” hardware will make me unable to enjoy participating in WvW. As I do like PVP a whole lot more than raiding/running PVE instances.

As far as your plans/time frames with how you gauge yourself buying new hardware, I agree with that. Not because I want to stay on top of making sure I can play every game that comes along at the highest settings, but because I know in that 3-4 year time frame technology has gotten so much better that it would be stupid not to buy a new computer or at least upgrade parts.

I do understand that if I am going to buy a new video card I should at least consider getting a more expensive/better one as it will last longer. But, the way I am looking at this is right now, my 4870 allows me to comfortably play this game(outside the possibility it may not handle large groups of people in WvW) and it’s ratings are on the low end as it’s an older card. And if it wasn’t acting up I would not have even made this thread asking advice on getting a new card. This tells me that I could buy a Double D Black Edition XFX ATI Radeon 7770 which is better than my current card, but not as good as a 650Ti EVGA SSC, and still be just as happy as I am now. Saving myself close to $60 or £37 and knowing I can still enjoy this game in the way I have become accustomed to. Having said that, that does not mean I have totally disregarded your advice in getting the 650Ti. For all I know when the time comes when I am ready to order my new card I may be able to even spring for something better than the 650Ti SSC, maybe something along the lines of the 560Ti you recommended(but still be able to run on a 500W PSU with no problems.)
It’s just right now, today, spending that extra $50 – $100 (or £31 -£62) is something I have to think through. And if I decide to just buy the cheaper 7770 this time, hopefully by the time I have to replace it I am in better spot where I can afford to not be hesitant in regards to buying a more expensive card.

3.0 cards are compatable with 2.0 .. Infact 3.0 isnt even being used atm. No card out is using all the bandwidth 2.0 has available. So you have no worries there.

The 650 would be enough. But i will still point out that the X50 nvidia cards are really high end media cards. .not gaming cards. So whilst it will be ‘enough’ ..you may feel the need to upgrade again soon after. That said though the 650Ti is better than a 460… so your only other choice on Nvidia’s side would be a 560ti which it soudns like would be outside your price range.
If you get a 650ti ..make sure its a ‘Ti’ becouse there is a big difference. And if you get a non reference card you could probably OC it for more performance if you so desired.

I found an XFX ATI Radeon HD 6770 1GB. That would fit my budget great. It’s benchmark is about 300 points higher than the 4870, and when I use the “Can I Run” option under Guild Wars 2 on this website (http://www.game-debate.com), both cards come up exactly the same for 1920×1200.
I also ran the test for the 550ti and it came up with a better score, but only by 5% .

The 650Ti 1GB beat them both by 21% and 16% respectably on that site, and of course the benchmark is much higher.

Now, the 650Ti is about $40 more than the XFX 6770. But, the XFX comes with a lifetime warranty, while the 650Ti only comes with a 3-year.
So, while I am inclined to want the 650Ti, I am not sure if it’s the better deal in the long run.
Either I buy the 650Ti and hope that if something goes wrong it’s in the first three years.
Or I buy the 6770 and hope I do not need to upgrade for long while…

the GTX 690 saturates PCI 3.0 fairly easily.

I would hope that a card that costs $1000 would do what it said it did. lulz.

Find you card there, then look at anything above it for an upgrade.
IMO for GW2 you should look at cards that score 2650 and above.

Thanks again.

I looked up my 4870 on the benchmark chart and it has a rating of 1,407. Well below the benchmark you recommend. The 550ti has a mark of 1,909, so obviously better than the 4870.

As far as your preferred score of 2650, the GeForce GTX 650ti is the closest to my price range. At a benchmark of 2,718 it would comply with your opinion, be almost 1000 points better than the 550ti and still have the same power requirements. But it is a PCI Express 3.0 x16 card.

My computer is a Gateway DX4860 Intel i3-2100 3.1GHz Win7 64-bit with a Intel H67 Express chipset(http://us.gateway.com/gw/en/US/content/model/PT.GCCP2.003).
Which states on the Intel product page has a PCI Express 2.0 revision (http://ark.intel.com/products/52807/Intel-BD82H67-PCH).
Which I am guessing, would not support a 3.0 x16 card?

500W will be fine for a 550ti.

That’s good to hear. Thanks for your reply.

The 550ti (EVGA 2GB GDDR5) card I was looking at is now sold out at the price I was interested in getting it at. It was the refurbished card option, so I had my doubts about buying it. I just wanted to know if it would have worked with my current computer. Tho the 1GB GDDR5 refurbished editions are available for the same price as the 2GB. I have zero experience with EVGA, and have only had one low end card by PNY. So, I am not too sure which company to “trust” more.

I’ll just go back to looking at various cards and seeing how they match up to my current one.

If anyone wants to recommend a card that is in the same ballpark as a XFX ATI Radeon HD 4870, is priced <$110, and works with a 500W PSU, please let me know. It does not have to have 2x DVI.

edit: I only play MMOs on my computer. I am not what you would called a “gamer”. Guild Wars 2 is the only game I am playing right now, so the card would only have to be able to play it just as well as the 4870 and possibly any other MMOs coming out in the near future.

(I have really no complaints about the 4870 I have had it for 4 or 5 years. I am only interested in replacing it due to the fan starting to make a lot of noise. I stupidly forgot to send the lifetime warranty in and XFX no longer makes the fan for it. (Yes, I could get it the card on EBay if I really wanted to, but my experiences with EBay are not good.))

Your current graphic card uses two 6pin, so im pretty sure the newer card requiring only one 6pin should work fine with your 500W PSU.

116W probably means the max power the graphic card would use, are you looking at at a 550ti?

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I am looking at the 550Ti.

Hello,

Currently I am looking to buy a new video card. However, being a little wet behind the ears I am a little confused over this card I am interested in. The power requirements state that it needs at minimum 400W of power, 50W less than my current card. BUT, it also says it needs a maximum requirement of 116W Graphics Card Power.
Along with my current card it’s also a PCI Express 2.0. x16. But my current card requires 2x 6pin, while this card I am looking at is only 1 6pin.

I have a 500W PSU which has run my current card great, but this maximum 116W Graphics Card Power requirement is, as I said, confusing me.
What does that mean? Does it mean that a 500W PSU won’t be enough or what?

Thanks for your time.
