You are so knowledgeable! Then how do you explain me tab targeting bleed damage numbers or the un-stealth swirl every day I play when people come out of stealth fully culled?

Culling is not good but those things render instantly.

It’s true, existence and therefore positioning, popup numbers and the effects do render instantly. It’s the loading of the character assets, body, face, customizations, armor, weapons, dyes, etc. that are taking so long and making a should be visible character still “invisible” when it’s tab-targetable. I swear it was DAOC, maybe I’m wrong there, but at distance, to compensate for loading time, a naked, generic doll would load. From there, customizations would load in as well as armor and weapon assets. That would at least give you a heads up that there was a pc there, even if they didn’t look perfect. Maybe that’s a possible solution to the culling and keeping stealth serverside: to load in naked characters first, but I don’t think they’d want to give up part of the polish of finished characters for better gameplay. If you wanted to keep the polish of complete, dressed characters popping out of stealth and make it faster, you’re going to have to report stealthed characters to the client so the client doesn’t have to rebuild from scratch characters every time they come out of stealth.

The minimal reporting to clients is to prevent hacks, any information you send to the client that the player shouldn’t see risks players hacking the client for any advantage. You don’t need to send more then a handful of bytes to the client to give it sufficient information about PC’s to render them.

As for preventing client-side hacks on reported stealthed characters, you’ve got your priorities backwards. The greater majority of people playing this game are not hacking, but are affected negatively by stealth-culling issues. Do you code for the better gameplay of the majority or for the tiny percentage of people using third party tools to discover stealthed characters? Which makes for better gameplay for a larger number of people? ArenaNet has not done a great job in preventing third party hacking evidenced by the rampant teleporting, speedhacks and radar usage in this game as is. If on/off stealth were available in this game, then I would say that it would be more likely to be hacked and used against stealth classes. Considering the mechanic as it stands, I don’t think hackers would have a reliable way to keep stealthers visible considering it is such a combat mechanic and not a sneak mechanic.

You know why culling affects stealth people? Because a stealth character’s position and existence is not reported to the surrounding people’s clients. The suggestions of subtle hints, such as flaming auras, vomit trails and popping numbers, wouldn’t work because to the client that would be able to see trails wouldn’t because that stealthed characters existence, and therefore effects, are not reported to the surrounding clients.

If ArenaNet wanted to fix stealth in regard to culling, they’d move stealth from serverside to clientside handling. Obviously there is an issue with full character loading from disk when a new character is reported to a client, so every time a character pops out of stealth, that culling lag affects the visibility time. If character composition, positioning and actions of stealth characters were still reported to surrounding, in-area clients, the transition from invisible to visible should be almost instantaneous as the individual clients wouldn’t have to load from disk, recreate and re-position the revealed character. I understand their desire to minimize necessary reporting to clients, but when they’re breaking a class to do it, they need to reexamine their strategy.

There needs to be a way for classes to pop characters out of stealth. I like DAOC’s implementation of the pop-out mechanic, but don’t agree with their on/off permastealth, though. Stealth isn’t interruptable or breakable, which to me, doesn’t make sense. If you swing a sword, hit something and hear someone scream, the jig should be up.

How about your vomit from the poisoning? What about the fire burning your invisible body? Sorry, that first tick on a dot should pop you out of stealth. Maybe we could see the effects of the burning, the trail of blood or if they don’t want to leave a trail of sick on the ground, a trail of green puffs. If a thief were to cleanse themself before stealth, problem solved and I know they can trait for cleanse on stealth as well.

As for aoe’s, you’re saying that ele’s and other aoe heavy classes are screwed for revealing thieves, but warriors and other melee classes are golden? That’s not quite fair as a staff ele would have nothing to “lock on” to, other than drop an aoe field where they THINK the thief might be, but that wouldn’t reveal them. Thiefs, in my opinion, shouldn’t be a class that wades into the middle of the zerg battlefield stealthed, but I could understand them using their stealth to flank the sides while avoiding damage.

If it broke on damage, I’d probably ditch the revealed debuff to compensate.

I honestly think stealth breaking on damage would balance the class quite nicely.

The problem with learning and leveling on an ele is that a new weapon can be anywhere from 8 to 12 to 20 new skills to learn, including their synergy with other weapons and the combos and attunement swapping that comes with it. It’s not like throwing a sword on a warrior and learning 3 new skills, kitten . Ele is a complex class, also factor in the need to respec completely, and possibly regear, if you’re going to seriously use the weapon. I was playing an ele since launch and didn’t get a focus until 3 weeks ago at the wvw request to block treb shots because I was mostly staff or d/d, depending on the situation, and still learning to play in both of those roles. The op is right, we should all learn all of our weapons, but picking up a new weapon for an ele is a challenging ordeal.

Best part is we only have to wait TWO WHOLE MONTHS for a possible partial incentive for something that has sucked a kitten since release. And then there are the non-existent badges… I’m so tired of wvw; I really don’t see the point anymore between the kitten drops, the rampant exploits and the lack of goals.

I can’t believe this long into this dungeon and people still have issues dodging Kholer when I demand we fight him or get nailed by scavs. All people know how to do is speed run; it’s so annoying. I’ve never had Detha bug because I kill the oozes and the gravelings as well before.

While you are at it, can you please find out when the AC ghastly bows will be fixed? Out of all of the AC weapons, the two bows are the ONLY weapons that still do not glow.

They glow, the first time you equip the weapon at night or zone into a zone while on your back. When you draw, the effect turns off. When you put it back up on your back or swap weapons, there will be no effect. Definitely bugged.

I’d love to be able to get Lodestones with the tokens from that dungeon. Ex: CoE tokens can be used to get a Charged Lodestone.
I think with the right token price it could work well. It would encourage more people to do dungeons also. Right now I never get a group for a dungeon that is solely from people within my own home world server.

Also, it would drop some of the prices for them on the TP, especially the ridiculous Charged Lodestone and give people a way to obtain them rather then simply buying them or hoping for the RNG to favor them that day. It would make the progression of actually getting all the lodestones you need actually feel like your progressing towards your goal as you would KNOW that you will get another lodestone by getting enough tokens rather than hoping for it to drop randomly.

This would be amazing. Vote +1.

Healing worth it?

Perhap, but I feel like I’m more effective landing those heals, especially on highly mobile mobs (mossman) or ones that involve quite a bit of dodging, making even better use of evasive arcana. Evasive arcana on staff requires you to gap close in on the field, which is probably close to the mob, going against the grain of the staff’s happy 900-1200 range. I’d rather pbae or cone a heal than drop a static that people run out of after 1 tick. You’re probably also closer to teammates who need healing for Elemental Attunement using daggers. Additionally, daggers are WAY more fun.

D/D is a better healer. 840 healing on my ele, and between Cone of Cold (2), Cleansing Wave (5), Elemental Attunement (on Attune), Evasive Arcana, Cleansing Wave (trait) and Cleansing Water, I’m throwing quite a number of heals and condition removals in a larger area than with a staff and it’s little font circle that everyone runs out of. I’m always always healing myself and putting out quite a bit more damage while doing it.

We’ll keep the truth about Elementalists among ourselves rather Sachiel since we’re doing everything possible to not be further “fixed” however I will state that I break small clusters and front lines up far faster and far harder than any Guardian or Warrior I’ve played with, they usually arrive for mop up duty once I’ve cleared out.

No, having the BL’s the same doesn’t make sense in the fairness department; it makes sense in the “it’s easier to design one map than three” department however. They should have made three different maps and let the #1 in the tier perhaps have the slightly more difficult to defend map. They need to redo the BL maps for some variety. I liked learning all the varied terrain of Mid/Hib/Alb and the change of pace of fighting in different environments.

Ranged weapons? pfffft. If you’re not up in Kholer’s face, you’re not having fun. (I’m a D/D ele).

If your class can’t melee on most bosses, you’ve either got to respec, regear, read bosses better or learn your class’ abilities. Gearing and spec’ing for overworld pve is cake. When you tool up for a dungeon and learn your class, you’ll actually be better setup for wvw. I don’t change my spec in the least between the two, but if I wanted to overworld pve, I’d go glass cannon as that’s really easymode and nothing much hurts you.

Defending is a complete joke in this game , i’m not sure what can be done , but it will be the down fall of wvw , I don’t remember DAoC towers going down so so easy

ae in daoc didn’t have a hit cap. A shaman throwing dis/poison or a sm could destroy countless people if they were grouped up. They need to remove the hit limit from ae and teach people to spread out or there’s a good chance you’ll be ae’d to death. 10 golems on a door = 5 hit at once = no chance of defense. AE made low defender defense possible.

I don’t think the dungeon finder was in at launch because they were still having grouping issues in zones and instances, overflows for about every zone and “Join in…” not working properly at launch, remember? They had other fish to fry then. They still don’t have overworld server guesting in either. Add in that fotm has weird mechanics with same server zone in and kitten out of luck for disconnects, and that’s another thing they need to refine or work around. The dungeon finder is in the works.

Mesmer portals in both areas = teamwork. If I’m not running in the swamp, I’m speed boosting, cleansing or drawing aggro from one of the runners. There’s plenty of opportunities for teamwork there.

I’d be completely happy with an out-of-combat only weapon swap to just save on the inventory juggling.

Also, “scooting around the map” works better with daggers and not staff. D/D ele is probably the fastest class there is.

Jumping puzzle or running siege seems to be the best way to get badges. It does feel kind of off when you wvw for hours, kill many people, and walk away with 5-10 badges. It’s a joke. Considering the time expendature: 1.5 hours for 3 exp runs on AC = piece of armor. Countless days wvw’ing and I’m sitting at 170 badges. Good luck getting armor if you only wvw. Almost all of the people I know who only want to wvw put together 80 exo sets from dungeon runs and karma vendors, forcing them into parts of the game they enjoy less and would rather not spend their time on.

Can’t get uber rich if you’re making an account bound item with account bound materials (vials/globs/shards) like I suggested. I guess at that point you could just chuck the mats in the mystic forge and skip the personal crafting grind. I like the idea of requiring the crafting skill though, much like the Gifts.

I wish they’d have a swap slot for us to stick an alternate set in, BUT ONLY allow the swap when out of combat. I’m getting sick of popping my inventory to put on a staff. Just make it so if you try to swap while in combat, you get the red warning text like normal.

The easiest solution for bad luck with the RNG holding people back from progressing in higher fractals would be to drop in a few recipes for jewelers to craft ascended level rings. Require a vial/glob of mist essence instead of the ectos needed for exos and use the same ori/orb parts. You can still do the orb/filigree/vial recipe x 5 like with exo jewelry. Just a thought and would allow people to better configure their gear than waiting on the right ring to drop.

At this time, I don’t see the point in progressing past fotm 10. At 20, you get infused rings which ONLY have +agony on them. The infused pink ring base stats are exactly the same as the normal pink ring stats, which are an upgrade to exotics, and my primary interest in running fotm. If your only goal is to upgrade stats from exotics, why go further than doing your fotm 10 daily until you get the rings you want, craft up the stat’d infusion and enough vials to craft the back and stat’d infusion for that? Are exo drops better? Is there seriously any other reason to grind FotM above 10?

I understand LordByron’s point: the first time you go through it as a D/D Ele, you’re guaranteed to be useless to your group with no ability to swap weapons. With experience, yes, you know what to expect, but an ele not being able to get out of combat in order to adjust our attack range is a failure of the class, or alternatively is a failure of the zone design if they want to keep the class with its mechanics. All other classes can weapon swap to a ranged weapon while a D/D Ele cannot. Maybe they should pop a short stealth on one of the dagger abilities in order to break aggro.

If the Lion’s Arch spam wasn’t enough to convince you to put one in the game before Fractals, you should be now. Trying to find a group was a pain before, especially during off hours, but now to find one for the level of single dungeon you need? This is getting really boring, standing around in LA, doing nothing but waiting on people.

I use a CM Storm Spawn mouse with the thumb buttons as Nearest/Next Enemy.

Also, if you’re using a G13 and AREN’T using the thumbstick for movement, you’re doing it wrong. Tying up three of your fingers for movement as well as four keys is silly. It takes about a week or two to get used to the thumbstick, but once you are, you’ll be doing jumping puzzles in no time. If you have to disengage your movement fingers to activate a skill, someone using just their thumb for movement in four directions will have an advantage over you because they can keep moving while doing everything else.

WvW: Random Match Lengths

Servers are giving up for the most part at the day three mark, once they realize they cannot make up enough points in the next 3-4 days to overcome the deficit. Instead of using a fixed 7 day or 14 day (far too long in my opinion), randomize the lengths of the matches to be 3-10 days. No one will know when the victor will be declared, and therefore, a realm down on points will not have hopelessness and apathy for wvw set on on day 3. They might have 1 day to come back or 7. You might even put the upper limit to 14 days or longer.

If they had RANDOM match lengths, so no one knew when the winner would be declared, there’d be no giving up. Randomize the lengths from 3-10 days and the problems with hopelessness would be gone.

Make the matches last anywhere from 4 days to indefinite days so the end is never in sight.

Some servers give up when they know they can’t win. JQ’s getting poked at right now for “trying when it’s too late” and “you have no chance of winning, why are you fighting so hard, it’s pointless lol?” By not know how or when the match winner will be declared, there will be less quitting, less hopelessness and more of a reason to stay in the fight everyday. Don’t allow the servers to be demoralized by statisticians. Just a thought.

Will those ele nerfs carry over to WvW because I couldn’t give two kitten about SPvP? Do NOT mess with eles because a thief can’t 1v1 them to take back a little circle. You should REALLY look at the state of the class in PvE, WvW and Dungeons before messing with our three best trait lines. There aren’t a lot of options out there for specs in ele’s outside of earth/water/arcane even outside of SPvP. Trash the survivability line /spec of an already weak as water class.

Betting NONE of the devs even play ele’s.

You don’t pick one attunement as the catch all and stick with it during a fight; that’s for weapons. Cycle attunements more and don’t complain when a skill gets a boost. JFC.

There were some great fights last night with both HoD and SBI. No one should say SBI’s demoralized, especially when JQ and SBI were pushing on HoD’s garrison from opposing sides, and SBI took it and then was able to push us out as well. That was so much fun. Really loving the JQ community so far and our leadership. First, second or third, taking the castle or not, still having a great time.

Tornado/Whirlpool is a spell of type “Transform.” The Elementalist has no other spells of that type. Based on what the spell does, I think it would fit well into the Cantrip line considering Mist Form and Lightning Flash “transform” the player. Is the “Transform” just something that slipped through the cracks during a renaming? Both Quick Glyphs (Glyph type) and Conjurer (Conjure type) are traits that affect the recharge or duration of their respective elites, but there is no trait can correspond to a “Transform” type. If Tornado/Whirlpool was changed to a Cantrips type, then Cantrip Mastery would be useful for shortening a cooldown for an elite.

Night capping: Look up to the right on your keyboard and find the “Pause” button. Be sure to push that before you log out for the night so all your hard work is saved.

Seriously, who cares about what HoD has in the morning or the total point score? Play the game for the battles, not the war.
