I’m not being sarcastic. I am genuinely enjoying the game, and if I come across as overzealous, it’s because it makes me a little sad to see the thought put into the game design lost on people who just want the same old MMORPG. I admit that the skill system felt a little restrictive at first, but there are a lot of nuances to the set each weapon provides. They combo well, and allow the character to excel in one way, while limiting it in others. I find that very immersive.
Also, if you look at each weapon as ONE skill slot, you get 7 to 9 slots (depending on whether you’re using one-handed + offhand or two-handed, counting weapon swaps, not considering elementalist attunements). That’s pretty flexible.
I have often lost track of time just playing in WvW. The main rewards of WvW (besides the badges, karma, coin, world benefits, etc.) are kind of intangible. It’s just exhilarating, whether taking part in massive battles, or ninja-ing, which players may or may not feel.
But I must agree that what you get from it progression-wise is somewhat limited. It would be a waste to let WvW go to waste, and it would be great if they could increase what WvW does for character progression to encourage more participation. More loot maybe? Lodestones would be nice, those things are impossible to get. Skills with alternative animations? E.g. FLAMING QUAGGANS OF BALTHAZAR. That would be pretty neat.
There is no such thing as universal appeal, all that leads to is blandness for the sake of not going into any one direction too much, and I would hope that Arenanet would know that and not go that way. However NCsoft is the boss and they’re having difficulty with their games in the west…
I would like to say that Factions is my favorite Guild Wars campaign and that Cantha is what I would consider my “GW home” if you will. Tyria is very pretty and all that, but it’s not “mine”, it’s not personally as fascinating as Cantha was. If we’re going to be fighting dragons for five years instead of returning there (or making and exploring new culturally different continents) i might just lose all motivation to play. What’s it gonna be, a boss fight and poof goes a dragon? There’s five years of content in one sentence. Please don’t, Anet.
it’s been 250 years since the asura left the underworld. i’d bet most living asuras haven’t even walked into a cave.
so no, i don’t think they’d go back if they got rid of primordus. they seem very comfortable in the tropical jungle they picked to live in.
Are you kidding me?
Look at those mosquitoes! I rather be back in a cave with my computer.
4x Necromancer, 3x Mesmer, 4x Guardian, 4x Thief, 4 Revenant
As you probably know the Asura were driven to the surface by the Destroyers, minions of Primordius. Even though they’ve achieved a lot in the last 250 years apparently their society today is nothing compared to what it was before the Exodus.
Which makes me wonder, if they could do you think they would go back?
When they first came to the surface they didn’t seem to like it much, in GW1 there were krewes complaining about everything from the height of the sky to the number of trees and animals, even the smell of the air. But they seem to have adjusted since. I was plesantly surprised to see how their structures fit into the existing landscape and trees and plants growing around them are tolerated. Combined with the fact that generations of Asura have lived on the surface now it makes me wonder if they’d even want to go back underground if they could.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
Will there ever be a fallen mode in story where you are not the hero of justice? Why wasn’t there an option to ally with the elder dragon?
I feel this game requires more diversity in its champions. Not everyone likes to save the day…
p.s.
I liked the part in the story where you kill the person from the order you are assisting, I felt the best death scene in the game should / must be Tybalt's (Charr) farewell; it was unbelievably cool while the Siren (Salvari) was pathetic - dying for friends? she had a good personality but a bad ending.
I’d be very disappointed in Anet if Cantha didn’t make it into the game for a stupid reason as the OP suggests.
Windows 10
Omg. My heart sank when I read this.
Cantha was my most anticipated areas that I want GW2 to have in the future.
It should have Cantha. In the human’s “never find my sister’s body” path, you have the choice to make your character’s background as a descendant of Canthan. I still have hope that they will include Cantha in the future. It’s a must or it’ll spoil the whole lore and anticipation.
I can see why they should include Cantha in future expansions and why they shouldn’t include it.
Honestly I would love to see the return of Cantha. It is the only other known Human Empire to still be around.
It has rich lore which can be played into an expansion, the xenophobic Emperor trying to keep the 5 (Possibly 6 with Tengu) races out of his country/region while fighting a new Dragon threat.
The Tengu are demanding they are allowed to return, both to reclaim some of their more sacred home lands (I know they came from all of Cantha, Elona and Tyria but the refugees from Cantha are the ones who caused the alliance between the Tengu tribes) and to help defend it.
The Pact are trying to move in to eliminate another Dragon threat but are struggling as they are still clashing swords with Canthan forces at every turn.
This sparks an uprising within the region, causing a splinter group to smuggle/escort large groups of Tengu and Pact soldiers into the region to form a foot holding and help take the current Emperor off the throne.
(Is just one idea of how the story could work, that is leaving out all possibilities with the forest and jade sea.)
So it doesn’t make sense to me really that they would avoid it.
i highly doubt that Cantha won’t make its way into GW2. it would be kind of ridiculous to just ignore all the lore possibilities there. i’m sure a lot of people would love to see how the Echovald Forest and Jade Sea have changed throughout the years with Shiro’s corruption diminished.
I’ll be pretty disappointed if we don’t get Cantha in an expansion – I loved the setting in the first game even if the city was hell ta get through.
I’m sorry I stepped outta yer box, don’ worry, if
ya whine enough they’ll put me right back.
I hope this isn’t true. Factions brought some of the best art into GW universe, some of the most memorable locations. I was looking forward to seeing Jade Sea in GW2.
I’m calling bs on this, what company would purposely cut off the potential profit of revisiting one of it’s most successful expansions, especially when many of the art assets can be used towards recreation.
Cantha and Elona both earned high marks for fans, and it would be a crime against gaming to ignore the potential awesome jumping puzzles a place like the echovald forest could produce, still one of the best environments ever created in gaming period.
Cool, thanks for the link. I, too, would love a return to Cantha. Factions is what sold me to GW in the first place. Shing Jea and Kaineng City took my breath away.
Hang on. Dial it back a second. Can I see your source? I’m not trying to sound snobby—I just honestly want to know where you found this bit of news, who this “unnamed artist” was and what context you took your quote from. Because going from “wanting universal rather than Asian themes” to “There will be no Cantha” is a magnificent leap of logic.
There’s a lot of ways you could interpret ‘avoiding Asian themes,’ but without the actual quote and the source, it’s all speculation.
However, a slightly simpler argument might say that they want to avoid Asian themes in the overall design philosophy of the game. There has to be a believable element of Western fantasy (which, believe it or not, has plenty of room for Eastern themes) in the design of GW2 in order to make the world more accessible, and do differentiate it from the stereotypical Korean Grinder.
The quote might have just been about universalism as a goal of the GW2 design vision and its relation to shying away from characteristically Asian themes. In which case, the evidence is all over Tyria. The world is variable and diverse and draws from all sorts of fantasy sources, and it’s hard to pin down in one specific genre.
Again, no idea what the original quote was, the context, or who even said it, but this is a simpler interpretation.
Do we get any evidence or we’ll just have to speculate on a random post that could be made up completely?
If this was true why this “unnamed artist” comes with this now, two months after release?
That is a shame as Factions was my favorite time period in Guild Wars 1. It was my favorite soundtrack too.
I still remember the feeling when I first logged on GW1, with Cantha music in the launcher. Man, I was sold. Factions really got me into this serie aswell.
Let’s hope it’s not true.
That you want to return to Cantha someday is fine, but why didn’t you just say that instead of coming up with all this nonsense?
The game just launched. Why would they include Cantha with launch when they can get people to pay for it down the line?
Priorities, what to do?
Spend hours with dye
personally i’ll wait for the sky to fall before i start calling that the sky is falling.
i loved cantha, i hope we get to visit it one day, but i dont know if it will be the first or second expansion or when, but we will have to wait for anet to say when.
I pretty much exclude the possibility of us not ever seeing Canthan-themed content again. Completely. I don’t know if it will be a full-fledged continent like in Factions, but surely we will revisit a few areas.
But I doubt ArenaNet is even in the planning stages for Canthan content. There is still a lot of terra incognita on the current world map that desperately needs some love, especially Maguuma.
That being said, having first experienced Elona and Cantha in GW1, and only then the Tyrian continent, I just feel no connection to the current GW2, not until one of those two regions is added. It doesn’t feel “Guild Wars” to me, which isn’t bad per se, I can handle change, but those two continents felt extremely unique and appealing to me in a fantasy-genre context. I felt at home in them. Made lots of great memories there.
I hope this is not true…i really hope this is not true..
I personally hated the map design in Factions, but not the actual design. Lore is good, but execution was poor. Regardless, there is potential there, and I personally can’t wait to make an Asian looking character as a thief. I surely hope they won’t be restricting us to Kryta only I hope…
But why on earth would NCSoft, a Korean company, want to get rid of Asian elements?
Kind of… doesn’t make sense in my head. Maybe from an investor point of few, but it’s not like Asian themes turn many people off. (inb4 korean grind/anime joke)
The Kodan ships feature Asian architecture. Just sayin’. I really want cantha to come back though. That was when I REALLY started to like GW1.
As you all may have heard Anet stated that they plan on adding housing post release but the real question is when? It seems as though housing is the new must have in upcoming and current MMO’s and is amongst the highest requested feature.
Imho Anet will start teasing housing soon due to the Rift expansion adding housing via Dimensions. That is my hope at least as I feel Tyria’s size and design is perfect for the addition of player/guild housing. Please Anet don’t drag your heels on this feature as I love GW2 and all it’s immersion and the only thing missing for me for long term loyalty is housing.
I’m really looking forward for the housing content too.
I hope they release the content as early as possible because the game is at it’s prime.
I want houses that are customisable, not like skyrim when everything is stationary.
It should have some “the sims” element.
I’d like to see what would happen if waypoints in dungeons were removed.
This forum would go from “blah, no challenge!” to “amagad Anet wtfu doing dung sux they 2 hard! fix dis!”.
Reality is that gamers will never be happy.
Please also note that the Suggestions sub-forum will not be open permanently. This is a temporary solution until we roll out a better, more organized way to provide suggestions to the development team than using the forums. – ReginaBuenaobra

Why The Suggestions Forum Needs To Be Organized
At the moment, the suggestion forum needs to be organised for the devs to have a systematic way of looking through the suggestions. As it is, players can be an untapped source of Suggestions that could make the game even greater.
My Suggestions
Tags – When creating a suggestion, you’d have a drop-down box in which you’d have to select a category at where the suggestion is aimed at. For example, Leveling, UI, Dungeons, Content, Skills, ect. This would automatically add a [Category] tag that can then be used for ease of searching and filtering (where the filter would be added for people to be able to look through).
So, for example, suggestions for improving the UI would have [UI] before the suggestion title.
Once the thread has been created…
Community Vote – If someone likes a suggestion, they press a button saying “I Approve Of This” (or something like that). At the end of a given time period, the top [insert x number of posts here] OR if the post reaches a certain amount of likes, the suggestion are put into a Featured subsection for the Devs to look at. Likewise, posts that get a lot of discussion also have a look in.
Finally, once ANet have considered the thread….
Feedback – ANet give the thumbs up / thumbs down whether they like the suggestion / concept behind the suggestion or not. If they do but they’d like to make some changes, explanations of the changes would be given.
If not, as a matter of courtesy, I’d expect them to give a reason why.
Time is a river.
The door is ajar.
Loving the Asura ,though the lack of hairstyles compared to other races is a shame. Please give us more! Hows about a mohawk asura for a start
