Lion’s Arch: The city trapped in time

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

The Quandary: So here we are ~9 months since the smoldering ashes of LA have cooled and still the city lies trapped in a single moment in time.

Consideration: There have been workers hammering away at the various bridges throughout the city and still they have been unable to throw some boards over the dangerous holes just waiting to swallow some unsuspecting traveler. At least put up some Caution Tape at the damaged areas.

Questions: Are there some issues with building contract negotiations that are precluding the work start-up? Have not enough Council palms been greased? Where are the good-hearted people collecting donations of cash and materials to contribute to the rebuilding effort? Where are the dedicated engineers and crafters looking to make a name for themselves with statements like “See that bridge over there…I built that”?

I am not saying that the repairs in LA should happen overnight but what I am saying is LA looks to be in the exact same state of disarray as it was 9 months ago.

Come on people, pick up a hammer and some nails and let’s get cracking.

[Suggestion] Old "town clothes" as armor skins or outfits

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Donari.5237

Erm … outfits would be better than tonics but I’d almost want a mini-CDI for clothing combo suggestions. Because most of the tonics were incredibly odd choices without any inspiration from the many “here are my town clothes combo” image threads.

I personally dislike the turned up toes of the riding boots, and they look hideously uncomfy when mixed with the sleeveless hoodie, plus jodhpurs with a hoodie? Really? To note just one of the tonic nightmares. I have to grit my teeth when using that on my super-casual Guardian — he used to do the hoodie along with the human town clothes trousers and either shoes or winter boots peeping out under the trouser hems. And his hoodie was a nice pale blue. I miss that look … at least if the tonics became outfits they’d be dyeable.

Who knows, maybe the PAX announcement will clue us in to some sort of quantum leap in customization.

I especially like how Slyvari/Asura/Charr just clip right through the headpiece. Definitely.

Someone has to have seen these issues sometime during the design process to fit it on all races/genders, right? Did they just look at these and tell themselves, “good enough”? You did it once with the cook outfit; please figure out a way to make it look like you didn’t just release something with intentional clipping that looks passable (Asura shoes come to mind.)

Normally I wouldn’t complain about something like this … but seeing as it’s a gem item for appearances, it seems silly to not fix an issue of its appearance. Other than that, it’s a great look.

Fashion! - a few ideas

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Umrae.5124

Umrae.5124

As a game that focuses on horizontal progression I think we need a bit more fashion in our fashion! Here are a few suggestions, changes and ideas.

1. Light, Medium, Heavy skins.
There have been many suggestions about this in the past and the most common reply was “Light can’t wear medium or heavy because it will blurr out the classes in pvp/wvw etc”.
Currently we have costumes, culling and the simplified models so why couldn’t we allow ALL the skins for ALL the classes?
Lorebreaking? Lets talk about some costumes and skins… Breaking the lore has never really been an issue with stuff beeing added into the game as long as its fun!
Having all the armors available would give everyone 3 times the ammount of skins to work with, so many new possibilities, options, etc.
Light classes would finally have pants, heaviens woudn’t be too clunky, female could be not as skimpy or even more skimpy and mediums could get rid of trench coats! This would also open many possibilites for role players.

2. Real clothes
We have caps, glasses, puff hats, top hats etc. Why not vests, shirts, jeans, pants, skirts etc? Town clothing as armor? No one uses the tonics of the sets, why not making it normal armors?

3. History!
Where did the time go?
So in GW1 we had a lot of elegant clothing for mesmers, elementalists, skintight necromancer sets, interesting monk and ranger gear. And almost all of those styles dissapeared. Thats a true shame!
Mesmers 250 years ago would wear suits, white shirts, vests, elegant armor etc and now they are left with a bra or a skinny dress. I understand that fashion changes overtime but some people like to wear vintage! Adding the old guild wars 1 armors would be awesome!
Lore-wise? Explosion of Lions Arch unburried some old archives with blueprints etc that Evon Gnashblade sold to armor-makers and now the old styled armors are back!

4. Culture
We need more culture. All of the races have been in Tyria for many many years, except the sylvari. I am pretty sure they did develope more culture than 9 armor sets each? Adding more of it would definitely make it more itneresting. Also allowing other races to wear all of the cultural sets (maybe with some reputation system you can gain with races – a bit like in gw1).

5. Costumes?!
I think recently we’ve gotten too many costumes, with even more datamined and too little actual armor sets. Costumes are awesome, and they have as amny fans as enemies. But I think replacing armor sets with costumes is a bad move. We didnt get a new armor set for months now.

6. Acquisition
I think we need new and interesting ways of getting armor sets. It doesn’t have to be difficult or extremely tedious, but making it interesting.
Currently we have the glorious armor set that is somehow unique for pvp players and that is amazing! Adding more armor sets like this is a great thing to keep players occupired in the goal of getting an armor set… or several.
Few ideas:
WvW based armor sets – 2k Badges of Honor and 50 ranks per armor piece. So at 50 you unlocked gloves at 100 boots, 150 shoulders, 200 hat, 250 pants, 300 shirts.
Random drops from JPs (account bound!)
Guild Commodations – 1 piece for 10 commodations.
Zone-related armors perhaps?

Summary

I think we need more armor sets. We’ve been getting way too many weapons and too little armors!

Hi Gaile!

First, thanks for coming back after your initial post in this thread. I think there has been some valuable discussion here and I’m glad it wasn’t missed. Gathering our input on endgame is a great first step. I hope that discussion comes full circle and we’ll get to hear what direction the company feels is right for the future of the game.

The game has major problems when it comes to producing content. After watching nearly all of my friends leave because there’s not enough new challenging content coming out and hearing similar complaints from other forumers, I don’t see how that is debatable. People who want more than casual LS content are leaving, it’s clear as day.

When we try to give constructive feedback, we’ve been ignored or told “Naaaaaaaaah, everything’s fine.” Now ANet seems to be listening, but it’s a one-way street. We’re telling you what we’re looking for, but we aren’t hearing if our interests align with those of the company.

So rather than some specific suggestions of what I’d like to see added to endgame, I’d love to see ArenaNet take a stance and share their vision for the game’s future; nothing too specific, but what forms of content do you have interest in adding? Will there be more multipath dungeon systems added? Will conditions in PvE get fixed to create actual build diversity? etc etc. These are the things people are being vocal about wanting — if you want to stop hearing the same questions over and over, give us some clear answers =P

Right now…all we can do is guess based on what we see, and I haven’t seen anything challenging added to this game in about a year. That, and I’ve seen a video saying that there’s nothing planned in the near future. So, what does “endgame” mean to ArenaNet? I think that’s a valid question.

Curiosa: The Depth of Lore

Zoid.2568

I think curiosa would add a lot more depth to the current story and also make players think in a lot more directions and not only on “the main” story.
Give hints and dialogues about other stuff in lore, like the dwarves, Glint, Crystal Desert and events from GW1 and events that happened now but in another zone that we can’t visit (yet).
Maybe a few words from Cantha or Elona, or some other place in Tyria? The story often feel linear, and I think adding curiosa to the story will make the universe of GW2 and our minds much more pleasant.

Nostalgia for Old Metrica

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: duckideva.6358

duckideva.6358

I just revisted parts of Metrica province; the starter area for the Asura. In my opinion, this was the best zone in all the game for silly humor, great character voicing, and zone cohesiveness as far as lore goes.

But oh my goodness, if this current zone had been the one I visited two years ago when I bought the game, I’m not sure I would have fallen in love with GW2 they way I did.

Old Metrica, there was a heart where you got to wear a golem suit, and do golem suit things. Now, the golem follows you around, you press F, and then tell the suit it’s a good boy. WTF?

The underwater inquest buildings are free of inquest, leaving empty buildings moldering down there like an artifact of fun.

Golem chess is gone.

I just don’t understand why on earth you would remove content that was fun, was lore specific, and fit so beautifully with the Asura story.

I said after the patch, I was going to level a new character, with all the trait handicaps, and level gate handicaps inherent in the new system, so that I could accurately critique the experience that new players would have. And I’ve done so, slowly but surely, heart by heart, POI by POI, vista by vista.

And while I despise not being able to actually play around with my character because she has no real access to traits despite being lvl 34, and still hasn’t unlocked the 9 and 10 skills, I think the thing I’m the most disappointed about is the removal of all the silly and fun content at the starter zones.

I just fail to understand why you would do that, but I’m beginning to find the whole process of leveling to be mechanical and disappointing, and I’m not sure I’ll last long enough to actually get an elite skill or traits.

Come on guys, there was no reason to take the fun out of the game.

Healing of Orr (just for fun) Season 3

in Living World

Posted by: Zoso.8279

Zoso.8279

While reading the general discussion forums someone posted a topic about moving forward in GW2 and giving an idea about the rebuilding of Orr. They suggested since GW2 has a living story to show how Orr was rebuilding because Zhaitan was defeated and maybe showing that in a new season. Well I LOVED the idea and started thinking of stories to show how Orr would rebuild. In that post I gave a few ideas but I still feel the creative juices flowing so decided to start a new post with a little more detail. There are issues with this because new players still have to experience the story but maybe there is a way around this by adding a new zone in the southern part of Orr and since LS are going to be permanent from now on (I think) maybe this can be done.

Thinking of a good way to show how Orr would rebuild while still keeping with the lore of GW2 I thought it would be nice to focus around trying to call back the gods. A new city was built in southern Orr to try and heal the island. The citizens wanting to reconnect with their fallen gods build a new temple to call on them and rebuild their kingdom. Trying to find a way to call back their gods this city becomes obsessed and follow ANY means to get what they want. Since they stopped thinking logically and were only focused on their obsession they start a ritual but it ends with unforeseen consequences.

The ritual calls unwanted creatures (ideas?) who’s only intentions are to destroy. The city realizing their mistakes feel guilty and vow to defend all of Tyria and stop the spread of the creatures (ideas!). Since southern Orr borders the Unending Ocean it would be a great way to introduce the Largos maybe making a small outpost? They are affected by these creatures (help! Ideas!) and are also in the fight to stop them from spreading.

Like it? Don’t like it? If anyone has anything to add on or maybe want to throw ideas out there just for fun FEEL FREE! I made this topic to have some fun with the living story and get creative juices flowing!

A look ahead by <Insert Red Name Here>

Sunday, August 24th, 2014

Hey Guys! Looks like those wacky asuras have invented the Tyrian equivalent of network TV and are about to launch the first Tyrian game show, ‘Giddy Up Golem!’
in which awesome asura Golemnaughts vie against each other in a tremendous trivia showdown that somehow or other is going to feature pineapple pie! More astonishingly amazing details as they become available!

Monday, August 25th, 2014

D’oh. We seem to have hit a snag. The TV network is up and running, but the pineapple pies keep exploding prematurely, which for some reason is causing WP outages all across Metrica Province (and also causing one of our code guys to break out in hives). It’s looking like we may have to go with pumpkin pies instead of pineapple. I know a lot of you were really counting on the pineapple. Mere words cannot express our regret, should we be unable to bring the pineapple to you. Gotta go now, we’re out of anti-hive lotion.

Tuesday, August 26th, 2014

Guys – we are so sorry, but we’re going to have to scrap ‘Giddy Up Golem.’ We did our best, but the pie thing… I can’t even talk about it. Not because I’m not allowed to talk about it, but because every time I start trying to type up the details, the pineapple team bursts into tears, because evidently they can tell by the sound what keys I am pressing on my keyboard, and they’ve already shorted out two workstations this morning. There is good news, however. We’ve managed to adapt the code for the asura TV network into a cutscene playback utility you can use while waiting for a boss to spawn, or for your dungeon team to get back from bio breaks, or whatever! We’re calling it the ‘Excelsior Television Network’ – and not only that, but a couple of the guys who helped design it are taking advantage of every precious moment of their sparsely allocated spare time to write, produce, direct, and star in Tyria’s first sitcom, “I Dream of Golems” which will soon be available for you to watch on your very own Excelsior Television Network hand (or paw) -held monitor, available in the gem store NOW! More later on most of these ETN affiliates.

Anyway, that’s how I would do it.

The table is a fable.

I don’t want to want to derail the thread, but yes absolutely we have discussed player feedback about these areas of the game.

This right here is the start players have been asking for. I’m not going to say something like this is a perfect answer, because it still leaves the who, the when, and the how completely ambiguous, but it’s at least a confirmation that ‘yes, we’ve seen it’.

As a roleplayer you have no idea what an absolute sigh of relief it is to hear it’s been discussed. For that area, and many others, it would be a much greater relief if someone came in an talked explicitly about the discussions, but as a start, just being acknowledged is so much a step beyond the silence.

Hi,

We read many forums all the time, we just need to do a better job of communicating that and working to discuss topics.

In retrospect the CDI break has probably been to long as well (That’s my fault).

I’m losing faith.

First was the scattering of the RP community by megaserver. I cannot overstate how much that harmed my relationship with this game. The rest of my guild just flat doesn’t log in now, and I’ve struggled to do so. (To any dev with the ability and desire to do so, check my log-ins since March compared with the year prior…)

Now, we are told that we could have a first-person perspective camera, but well it doesn’t really work with the combat. A fair point. But who the hell ever said they wanted a 1P camera for combat? It’s for immersion, travel, wandering around. Now I now you can’t charge gems for screenshots, but I would absolutely spend more time in-game if this feature was implemented. More time in game means I’m more likely to spend $ on gems, yes? …I don’t even know how to respond to that rationale. I’m not stupid. I am willing and able to toggle the camera. This is literally (as in the actual literal meaning of “literally”) mind-boggling to me.

No ability to tag as RP for megaserver filtering
the restrictive camera perspective/FOV
seeming abandonment of SAB and precursor crafting
…these are a few my least favorite things. They are reasons I will be moving on. (Check my log in; I’m not blowing smoke.)

And if I hear ONE more “we are aware that this feature is desired, but we can’t talk about it, check back in a year for the same answer”…I’m gonna spew. God, I am so angry right now.

Personally I don’t see why people want an expansion at all. I mean what do you think we’d get out of it?

Something on a par with GW1 campaigns, maybe? New continent, new professions, new story and missions, loads of new skills for existing professions, new elite pve areas, multiple new pvp modes.

Even something on a par with the lone GW1 expansion would be decent, at least for the pve side of things. New skills, new kinds of pve, new areas to explore, new quests.

Is that a lot to hope for? Of course. Is it unrealistic, given the differences between GW1 and GW2? Very possibly. But even half of a GW1 campaign would be fantastic. And it’s been two years!

And that’s part of the problem. They’ve spent two years getting better at living story stuff, yes, but that doesn’t give you much permanent content. Meanwhile, players have gotten better. Builds, groups, large-scale organization, etc. have improved. All of that makes the original content not just old, but laughable.

I only really play dungeons/fractals, so I can’t comment directly on other parts of the game. But one of the problems I face is that we’re stuck playing 2-year-old content that is not only stale, but is laughably simple. We’re better at the game than we were two years ago. Give us new stuff to be bad at so we have something new to learn and work on.

The new patches have been cool for the 30 mins it took to play, but beyond that this game is going nowhere. The devs have lost touch with the player base. Telling us what we want…. Ok so I have seen lots of post on reddit and on these forums, of people saying that ANet needs to release some sort of road map or overview of their plans. These people are also asking why ANet is not doing this. Let me provide you with a reminder.

Have you forgotten the backlash from the community that ANet received when it was casually mentioned in a deployment blog during beta that dyes would be account bound and then at launch along with the dye unlocking system being completely changed, dyes were also character bound instead of account bound.

I can understand why ANet is fearful of releasing an official roadmap. If they received such negative abuse from the community over such a small detail that was never officially promised, imagine how they think the community would react if the final version did not match exactly how they laid it out in the road map or had to be delayed for some reason.

ANet was originally very open about their development, but the vocal negative minority of the community crushed that and forced ANet to be more selective with what they release to the public.

Dev Player communication is a two way street of respect, the community dropped the ball early on and now we have to deal with the consequences of that.

Please do kill off Trahearne!

in Living World

Posted by: Excell.1042

Excell.1042

Trahearne can’t be fixed. Please kill him off!
I see a lot of people asking for Trahearne’s death and blood, and I think that would be a huge, HUGE succes! Why? In short: It would be the end of the ‘Trahaerne’ cycle.

When Trahearne came into the story, players were pre-conditioned not to like him, because of Trahaerne’s character itself.

1. Throughout the entire personal story, from level 1 to finish, we are introduced to characters who befriend us for about 10 levels, then simply get replaced. By level 50, when Trahearne is introduced, we already get that feeling about him as a “Boring character".
2. Our mentor’s death. As players, we thought our mentor would actually stick with us, as they remained for more than 10 levels. Our mentors had spicy, fun personalities, and then they are suddenly replaced. That felt really bad and thats why Trahearne must die.
3. Trahearne came off TOO much as our nemesis. There wasn’t much time to build trust, even during the Sylvari storyline. It felt like he was being shoved in our face during the Claw Island arc, and that instantly made him unlikeable to many, thus, kill him plz.
4. Praise without any exposition. We met Trahearne, and he seemed like an incredibly humble scholar, and he seemed okay. But then other NPCs continuously praise him, and we learn he’s some sort of HERO BADDASS WHO TRAVELED INSIDE AND OUT OF ORR LIKE IT’S NOTHING! Yet to Trahearne, he likes to be kitteny about it. Okay, that’s all fair, and if he’s a kitteny baddass, that’s not pretty cool. But here’s the problem with that: TRAHEARNE MUST DIE

So why do people hate him, Trahaerne himself? he sucks!

However, this concern about Trahearne cant be addressed anymore, and there were a few instances where I felt genuinely disinterested in his character. During the Sylvari Personal Story, we got to see him interacting with Caithe, while during the Claw Island arc, he was humerously remarking upon his misadventures with Sieran, and he actually made me want to punch a kitten in the mouth! It was the few scenes like those, where we actually got to see his personality and interactions with others, which actually gave players a profound hate for Trahearne!

Sure, Trahearne is a stoic Necromancer who has confidence issues, who is still a little shy even at the party after you defeat Zhaitan (Lol what a nub). But at the same time, if done right, you kill Trahearne off.

What defines a character’s personality are tension, conflict, and their approach to problems. In Trahearne’s case, he is not too good socially, and he is quite shy. Interacting with Taimi and getting a little embarassed around her, is a good way to define who he is. Or perhaps even more interesting, his interactions with a muscle-head like Braham, since Trahearne is a scholar Necromancer who uses tactical reason over Braham’s brute force.

My point is that Trahearne cant be good, even if done right, and killing him off would be a good decision since nobody truely likes Trahearne. ANET should instead return Tybalt, Forgal and Sieran.

So for pete sake, PLEASE kill Trahearne! (Love, the whole of the GW2 Playerbase)

The Future of Role-Playing in GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Shaman.2034

Shaman.2034

Hello everyone, I came here today to add my voice to the dwindling list of roleplayers in this game, and to spread awareness about the problems we face as we struggle to sustain our dying playstyle. We lack critical tools necessary to make role-playing a comfortable and immersive experience for all parties who choose to do so; but there seems to be some key solutions that could be worked towards, based on features that already exist in the game.

Arguably the largest problem with role-playing in its current state is that the playerbase for role-play has been too thinly diluted with the introduction of the megaservers. While I agree that the megaservers are a boon to players on lower population servers or less active maps in general, the criteria for exactly which megaserver you join is too variable, and no individual criterion seems to be effective enough on its own to guarantee you a match with other players based on similar interests – in this case, role-playing. In fact, none of the officially listed criteria for megaserver placement have anything to do with how you interact with other players, besides your client’s language.

To solve this, perhaps we could work with the megaserver system to better reinforce matching role-players into a more dense population spread: a toggled option, that allows you to select, for example, In Character or Out of Character. When you toggle yourself to In Character, the game could use this as a megaserver matching criterion that overrides all other criteria, so that you are placed into maps comprised mainly of players who are also marked In Character. I realize this would not prevent griefers from entering by simply flagging themselves as In Character – but there’s another solution that could help with that problem.

Griefing against the role-play community has led to a great many players seeking refuge in private role-playing, which has significantly reduced the chances you’ll encounter role-play in open world. “Griefing” used here refers to acting in such a way as to intentionally break the immersion of role-players in a scene; to interrupt the flow of dialogue by spamming chat channels that host role-playing; and to create a distraction so large that other players cannot simply ignore it and move forward.

For example, a common method of griefing is when a player moves their character into an area with clusters of role-players, and proceeds to repeatedly initiate emotes, like /cheer, /cry, or /dance, so that the chat channel is completely filled with their messages and washes out all other player messages. Another method is when a player moves their character directly to a group of role-players and begins dropping excessive amounts of particles and sound effects – like Engineer grenade or bomb skills, or the autoattacks of some of the louder legendary weapons, Quip and The Dreamer. These types of attacks can sometimes last for hours, depending on the dedication of the griefer, and are sometimes initiated by several people at once, increasing the amount of visual and audio noise. There is currently no system in place to protect against these methods of griefing.

This problem’s solution is already automatically controlled by the game client to some extent: Players are able to select the amount of character models that are rendered in their surroundings, as well as how detailed those models are. All player characters outside this range are culled from sight and sound, leaving only a nameplate. Perhaps there could be an option implemented that allows players to manually control which characters their computer chooses to render, so that if an incident does occur in which someone is using particle effects and sounds to intentionally grief someone else, then the victim can protect themselves from it by removing it from their personal view. This option could be tied to the Block function, as well as added functionality that the blocked player’s emotes do not show up in the emote chat channel.

Overall, Guild Wars 2 has gone through improvements on every game mode since its release – except for role-playing. We need some basic tools in order to sustain this playstyle; surely nothing as labor-intensive as a Living Story season, but important functions to better protect ourselves when we role-play in open world, and to be able to reliably find megaservers which contain other role-players.

If you’ve made it this far through my post, I’d like to thank you for taking the time to read it. ArenaNet, if you’re listening, I’d like to say that I appreciate any amount of time you spend considering improvements toward a playstyle favored by a small fraction of the whole population. It’s my personal belief that ArenaNet should step forward with an official stance toward role-playing, and either take steps to protect and encourage it, or denounce it completely. Regardless, role-players have nothing to lose at this point, except the opportunity for growth.
