@ Fate.8673 Another point, you love to come and throw all these utilities back here that have these great capabilities, but you ignore the fact that they never make it on to the ranger’s utility bar all that often. Pretty much need to run some form of invuln so that is Protect Me or Signet of Stone (Thieves.. nuff said). You need some form of condition removal so that is Signet of Renewal, which pretty much leaves us with one slot left.. where you can mix and match, but you are going to go for things like Lightning Reflexes and QZ over Muddy here probably.
ArenaNet has stated before that the classes will be balanced around sPvP so that has to be your benchmark for viability. Right now you have 1 (maybe 2.. but it is a stretch) viable builds in sPvP being run by Rangers. That isn’t a lot of options to play the game my way..
I also challenge you like you challenged the ranger community.. maybe you aren’t playing against strong enough competition to see the weaknesses like some of us do.

How can we be a “control class, not a damage class” when all professions are supposed to be able to fill a variety of roles?
Your entire post can basically is summarized as “use the least-ineffective spec we have left” which is no different than what was happening when everyone was on shortbow with either crit or condition spec. The same discussions were basically had about if you were using longbow or greatsword you were “doing it wrong.”
There is no valid claim to being more skilled or capable with the class just because you choose the spec that is basically the least broken (which is not the same as saying most effective, because that would suggest it were comparatively effective to begin with).
You listed several examples of other classes filling this role out better, but dismiss it away with “don’t worry about other classes.” That’s just ignoring the problem rather than fixing it. People make grouping decisions based on what will give them the best chances of successful or faster outcomes, if we aren’t capable of competing with another class, they will be chosen more often.

I’m having trouble reconciling these two statements…
I’m sorry but If I’m a new player to Guild wars 2 I would want to know all pro’s and cons of the ranger class, and as it stands right now because of bug issues the cons out weigh the pro’s. I’m a level 80 ranger, now granted I have no real issue with my PVE, I’m fully aware that my dmg will also be far lower than warrior, I’m not here to compare the broken mechanics of the pet system to other games, I’m here to have fun at my leisure without having to stress over too many things.
However what annoys me more is the fact that people still don’t realize that the class itself is in horrible condition, regardless of how it compares to the other classes it doesn’t have any real appeal, there isn’t that something that hooks people into playing a ranger,
“Wow I get pets?!”, – Yup and after level 70 they make awesome decorations in Cursed shore".
“Oh wow a short bow and a longbow??” – Mhm, its pretty classy even though the Warrior and even thief can dish out more DPS with it :x.
“Traps are awesome!” – Yes yes they are….don’t nerf them …please…for the love of god don’t nerf them… ;_;
“Oh wow I can move pretty fast!” – Yup, just watch out or you might get sideswiped by the elementalists and Thieves speeding by.

In all seriousness though rangers aren’t that bad, infact i’d argue they’re one of the stronger profs at endgame (especially in PvE) however, to me they’re about as boring watching plants grow though… all i do is stand really far back hit F2 every so often and hit 3, 2, 1, 1,1,1,1,1,1, 3, 2 ,1, 1, 1, 4, 3, 2 1 1 1, it’s dull…

I take issue with this topic because…you know. This is ANET’S Ranger. I’m not saying never criticize it. I’m saying don’t criticize the base concept, because you’ll always loose. Not because ANet is ignoring you. It’s because you’re ignoring the intent of the creators. This thread only exists because someone thought “This doesn’t connect with what →I<- think a ranger is!” It doesn’t have to. Just because you don’t think it’s a ranger, and no matter how much you throw around “inspirations” and things of that nature doesn’t mean this isn’t what ANet calls a ranger. At the end of the day, this is the class ANet branded with the name Ranger. Letting labels be the class instead of just being a name is a little absurd.

You basically took away 7% of our [Obstructed] (much more for the condition damage builds or the builds relying on Quickening [Obstructed] for burst [Obstructed]) without giving us anything in return but “we want you to use other [Obstructed], lol”.
If you deem it necessary to take away from our damage, I guess we were just dealing too much damage compared to those noob [Obstructed] like thieves who can only deal 23k or more damage in less than 3 seconds. Cool, didn’t [Obstructed] that we were so OP.
As others have already said, the shortbow only has Crossfire for damage, since [Obstructed] other skills are conditions, control or defense. How is a shortbow using ranger supposed to kill his opponents? Discuss them to death? -.-" [Obstructed] funny.
Ranger already has so little to offer compared to other classes, now we don’t even have great burst damage. And to put it bluntly: sustained damage is completely irrelevant and [Obstructed] [Obstructed] [Obstructed] [Obstructed]. I’d rather have a skill that deals 36k damage in a single shot and has a cooldown of 1 hour than a skill that deals 10 damage each second for the next hour. The first one gets you kills, the other is a mild inconvenience for the opponent before he tears off your face.
There’s a metric [Obstructed] ton of issues with the ranger class that desperately need attention (just take a look at the aptly named sticky thread on this forum, in case you haven’t). And you have nothing better to do than nerf the single burst damage ability we have? Seriously? How about fixing the really [Obstructed] pet controls we have? Or the not working skills/traits, like for [Obstructed] that Opening Strike doesn’t work at a range higher than 900? Or the kittenannoyingnerdrageinducing [Obstructed] obstructed thing which makes your shots miss even if the target is standing right [Obstructed] in front of you on plain ground?

Took a couple of days to get debugging in on this. It is in fact a 40ms difference which equates to about 7% less damage when spamming 1. We made this change because it was creating some animation bugs to leave it where it was. It was also encouraging just spamming 1 which isn’t the most fun gameplay. If our data shows shortly that shortbow is now not effective we can certainly address that, but would do so by improving other skills on that weapon rather than by reintroducing the spam on 1 and the bugs that it was creating.

Who dictates fun factor? I can tell you feeling kittened compared to a warrior with a rifle is certainly not very fun, and this change you implemented magnifies our differences more so.

I understand that your proposing better game design, but you are willing to hurt us and analyze how hurt we are before offering improvements? The rangers have seen no real work since release and given it took 2 days to confirm what change actually took place, how long would it take for our other skills to be improved. Lets take a look at the current weapon line up rangers have:
Great Sword. No one uses this since beta test 2/3 where it was nerfed into nothingness. Its defensive nature is at odds with the fact that its melee and we can simply use ranged weapons to deal more dps from ranged (which is safer). Too little damage for the enhanced risk of being melee.
Sword. In general very meh; hard to build a strategy around it, used for snaring and keeping targets snared, but thats something rangers are very good at outside this weapon.
Longbow: Terrible attack speed, animations, and the kit in general. Damage is sub par to Warrior Rifle, never seen outside of WvW and even in WvW we only use it due to the traited 1500 range. Any ranger who has seen Engineer grenade spaming at 1500 range would gladly swap classes im sure.
SB: Every ability outside 1 does next to no damage. One relies on the pets hitting the target, which may as well never happen in PvP given our pets can barely keep up with mobile foes, let alone landing one of their painfully slow attacks or F2s.
Pets in General: Buggy, Slow, Ineffective in PvP and WvW. This is our unique mechanic, and outside tank and spank Pve they are pretty useless. Dungeons they get one shotted (even ‘tank’ pets).
So you made a change to a class that has one redeeming quality (our SB ‘1’ attack) and are now going to remain patient to see the fallout to determine next steps?
Let me ask this; wouldnt it have been a better decision as a game designer to come in here and make a post like
“Hey guys, we have identified some issues with SB #1, and are going to make changes to it, and wanted your opionion about Short Bow and what its lacking given that the dps on the auto attack might be scaled back a bit”. Then after a polite discourse and idea exchange, you would be empowered more and the players would be more content?
NOPE! THATS NOT WHAT YOU DID! Instead you ‘fixed an animation bug’ that no ranger I have talked to has ever noticed to disguise what would be an unpopular nerf to the class, and now that we basically are a terrible kitten class you are going to tell us you might review some data, which will spring the possibility for you to formulate a counter balance to the rest of our weak weapon?
If this is par the course for how you plan to introduce game changes, I may be looking elsewhere to spend my time.
When they introduce a pure-ranged martial class that has at least 15ØØ range and more options than what we’ve currently got, tell me, and maybe I’ll stop trying to push the ranged aspects of a ranger. Until then, since I like range, I’ll focus on the range of my ranger so she can fight ranged while she ranges, dawg.

I dont agree on pets. Pets are so dumb its terribad. I totally hate them in instances. On other side i have full geared war and ranger. I must say for just about anything my war is far far better. That kitten me off a lot coz i really like ranger class.
Honestly i wish to play ranger with dual swords, or sword and dagger. I wish to try use LB and use my pet. Fact is none of this is viable build for anything. Ill give u example. I wanted to try different styles but the fact is B was only one that was working and now ranger is dead. So even if they fix SB, will that be all ? Im sorry but other classes have awesome choices. Think war for example. Dual axe, Gs, axe and shield , all of this are awesome. Why does it have to be that rangers are so terribad ?
Imo, this has to do with “quality of life” issues. Swords kit lets them perma cripple, and has a kittenload of “get out the way” abilities. if a warrior is about to hit you with a huge truckload of damage, you can use the viper skill to duck behind him, avoid damage, and poison him. This is what they want it to do, sadly due to bugs like positioning on that move, and the “root” bug of the normal chain, sword has issues that prevent it from being a strong contender.
The third Swing of the GS chain gives you evade frames as well. Meaning if you are auto attacking a mob in pve for example, 33% of the time you are in evade frames. Problem is your damage is kittenall due to quality of life issues, GS could be like sword, and have a bunch of defense and mobility IF it had some tiny little changes.
Long bow has alot of damage imo, the problem is its CDs are kitten high, if rapid fire took 3 seconds instead of 5 with a 6 second CD, it would be such a stronger weapon. Another problem is it does not auto attack past a certain range meaning you miss out on alot of range you could of had unless you wanna spam “1” to get it.
Im pretty pleased with the offhand choices for ranger, Daggers stab skill could use a damage buff, but other then that, its legit. It gives you even MORE evade frames. Letting you dodge attacks without stopping the offensive.
Pets are really good if you know how to use them, and use a pet that is right for the situation.
Middle class is the average, its a decent place to be. poverty sucks, but atleast you know you suck, and you dont feel bad because you know you are poor, the government looks out for you cause of it. lets say Guardians are middle class, and Necro is poor, Ranger is in the worst place. They are inbetween these two. They need just a slight nudge to be decent, but are not bottom of the barrel, so the bossman dont care.
Simpley put, games will always have classes better then otehrs, its a simple fact. But most of whats limiting ranger is quality of life and or bugs.
Because they’re grown by the Sylvari to imitate underwear (since humans would whine all day long if they didn’t cover their shameful naked leaves). They’re not an imitation of hair (or any other natural bodypart), they’re an imitation of cloth.
