Honestly , ranger never were good in big fights anyway , maybe use of barrage + entangle + muddy terrain… but even then its just pointless .

However , rangers excel in 1-5 player skirmishes , and there is where most ranger builds shine , the mainstream builds , be it trapper or any version of the beastmaster .
Another thing to consider is the fact that rangers have quite poor chasing burst power . U cant really finish off a thief or an elemental , the two main dueling classes , if they choose to run .

So to put it plainly , you can take on warriors , engineers , mesmers who suffer to either AOE or considerable condition pressure , condition removal or not , but you cant really win against an equally skilled thief or elemental so the best result you can hope for is a draw .
By playing pure damage builds you will simply lose to the elemental or the thief , and have a hard fight against classes that a condition build would just walk all over . Beastmaster builds allow for attrition hence enabling you to at least fight to a draw in most cases .

This is why pure damage berserker ranger builds are not good .

It depends entirely on your strategy . Berserker builds , at least for rangers , are really niche , as in made for PvE mostly , as berserker rangers are food in WvW .

Rampager builds , however , work really well with the best ranger weapon , namely the short bow . Rampager gear , also , gives you choice to freely swap trait distribution ranging from full trapper , even if a bit on the glass cannon side , and full on DPS . You can even do some crazy kitten hybrid beast master build with it and make it work… and then some .

So , my stance is that Rampager gear is better simply because it offers more flexibility when it comes to builds .

Massive nerf to berserker builds

What this does is give them ample room to change weapons that need it, e.g. Longbow. They have an opportunity now to decrease channel times/increase damage without making the skills overpowered. I think this will prove to be a good change in the long run; we just have to get the changes that this makes room for. Still, the nerf to quickness would definitely justify a 1 second increase to our pet swap trait, now that quickness is a great deal weaker.

You seem to forget SB has also been nerfed twice over now with this patch and its quickness nerf. They are crippling an already subpar dps build with this and you still say they are going to change the ranger for good? You are kidding right?

Are you literally so desperate that you will be happy with any change to the ranger even if they are nerfs? Are you literally going to keep saying “don’t worry guys they will make ranger good now”? You are deluded.

Let me quote myself for a moment..

Ok, go petition for a shortbow fix now.

I am certainly not deluded enough to think that this fixes the game, but I think it’s a step in the right direction. Instagib damage doesn’t promote interesting play unless you are loaded up on stunbreakers. Global burst nerfing means they can buff individual skills more readily now, as well as tone down overpowered bunker skills on certain professions without worrying about huge backlash.

You could stand to be a bit more polite.

Advice on my Ranger WvW build

Switch out Ranger rune for Scholar. Power does more for GC builds and you should have 10% bonus to attack if you zerg surf in the back.

Switch out Axe/Horn for GS. For mobility and for d/d thieves. Most of them are spammy. Go 4, 3, 5, zephyr, switch pet, 2, 1 and you’ll down most GC d/d thieves. Swoop is the best mobility move in game now. You need it when kitten hits the fan.

Traps are pointless in wvw. Everything from clones, to pets will set them off. If you’re gonna just 1 vs 1, why play wvw? Run lightning reflex and zephyr for extra dodge/vigor and faster dps with LB2 and 5.

Switch RAO for Entangle. Hard to stack might with RAO using LB so you get nothing aside from stability. RAO flows better with sword and SB.

Switch vigorous renewal for wilderness knowledge. which would lower the cool down for 2/3 utilities and your elite. Plus dodging in your healing spring in hopes of getting vigor is death in wvw, you’re just aoe bait.

I am still here and watching. I’m currently composing a list of ideas and statements from this thread to bring to our balance meetings (held multiple times per week), that I can present to at least talk about with the group.
I go to the meetings as a representative for rangers and dungeons, since I play both of those things extensively. Here’s how my list is looking so far:

Core problems: (Note: we are very aware of both of these things)
-Pet AI.
-Pet management tools
-pet F2 skill executing faster.
Things to investigate:
-Pets auto attacks only hitting a single target.
-On “return” command, your pet gains swiftness so it can escape out of red rings more easily.
-A button that makes your pet momentarily not take damage. A sort of “Dodge” button for you to control. This is mainly due to us making sure players know how to use their dodge-roll or damage mitigation skills, which pets don’t have, and don’t always know how to escape properly when recalled without a direct pet swap. (NOTE: This is a springboard idea for pets being able to avoid damage)
-Pet/minion AR that is shared with the master’s stats.
-More defensive pet skills.
-Vigor applied to pets turns into swiftness or protection.
-In dungeons, pet’s get more health/armor.
-Lick wounds not always working. Pet just runs back and stands on your body.
-Search and Rescue buggy
-F2 skills activating faster.
-Health/stamina bars for pets
-pet names not being undone when removing them from the “kennel”
-Boons displayed over pet health bar on UI

Pet dodge when the Ranger dodges? Who really thinks that is a good idea?

I sure as hell do not want to be the only class forced to blow their stamina due to stupid pet AI or their inability to not get destroyed by anything and everything that isn’t a singular white level 80 mob in the open world. Okay, I exaggerate (only a bit, mind you), but my point stands.

That has to be one of the dumbest suggestions I’ve ever heard (no offense to anyone), and I can’t even believe more than one single person thinks that it is a good idea.

If you don’t mean to give offense, than don’t say things that can easily be taken with offense. Just because the idea wouldn’t solve the problem, doesn’t mean it can’t be a springboard for other ideas.
“A way to make pets dodge would be good” is what I took away from it. What if a button existed that could make your pet dodge roll, or gave it evasion for a few frames (no animation!) It could be called the “Dodge!” button, and every time I used it I could make a DBZ Abridged joke to my mates on TS.

But that doesn’t solve the problem. It’s a cool thought that I can bring up with folks, but wouldn’t solve the problem of pets in dungeons while possibly adversely affecting PvP. Making the numbers bigger doesn’t work either (trust me, we’ve tried)

To me, if a build wasn’t viable without temporary buffs then it wasn’t really a viable build in the first place.

30 minute Buffs with no recast isn’t a temporary buff.

I will rephrase then to consumable buffs.

actually I would say the exact reverse of this, any build that does not factor in the consumables that are available to counter some of its weaknesses is likely a poor build that is not as good as ones that factor in the consumables.

Yes, food in a build makes it better, doesn’t matter what build, because it has extra stats.
However, a build that REQUIRES food isn’t a good build in the first place.

this is a great video, interesting build, you obviously make it work! Can i ask whether QZ and troll ungent synergize well though? with troll ungent, you’re being healed around 40% of the time, so if you popped QZ when needed, wouldn’t there be a 40% chance that you’re hurting yourself? (QZ 4 second duration = 4 ticks of heal, so 40% chance for up to 40% less healing) Or do you only use it after troll has run it’s course etc?

Thanks for mentioning this, it really didn’t occur to me but I should have explained in the video. I’m in the habit of using QZ near the beginning of an engagement, then using Troll Unguent immediately after the quickness ends. The end of quickness is my semi-conscious queue to use TU.

QZ lasts 4sec and has a 48sec recharge, Troll Unguent lasts 10sec and has 25sec recharge.

If used on cooldown timing goes something like this:
0: QZ on
4:QZ off
5: TU on
15: TU off
30:TU on
40: TU off
48:QZ on
52:QZ off
55:TU on
1:05:TU off
1:20:TU on
1:30:TU off
1:36:QZ on

So it takes a while before it ever overlaps.

Longbow Ranger not as good?

i’ll give you an objective assessment. ive been using the LB for months. it’s used for two reasons: a deadly burst with quickness, and barrage.

the rapid fire burst is almost always nullified if the opponent has an awareness of you. that being said, with a proper build you can actually flank someone and if you pet is there, burst them down for 20k damage. it’s a very gimmicky build.

the often-flaunted 1500 range is next to useless against moving targets (again, only useful for barrage). LB is not really a skirmishing weapon, but unfortunately it lands its arrows most reliably at about >900 range.

LB builds are weaksauce. they have no sustain and you’ll basically be tied down to a zerg. the low firing rate of LB exclude it from proccing heals on crit with food in an efficient way.

i ran an LB trap build for zerg warfare and it’s very effective. understand its role and you’ll enjoy it. meaning, dont try to skirmish with it.

overall, the SB is a much more powerful power/crit weapon because you can skirmish with it, and it reliably proc heals from food. it also synergizes better with traps.

overall, LB is a very confined, niche weapon in need of some serious changes. hope that helped.

Generalizing encounters from my point of view (since January patch):
01. Enemies start appearing, prepare for combat!
02. Approaching.. I’m nearly ready to attack these unaware dudes!
03. They DISAPPEARED! Was there a thief… NO!
04. kitten my health is going down FAST, there were only two dudes?!
05. Ah there they are! These two dudes finally re-appeared!
06. Oh crap, they aren’t attacking me, my health is still going down hard?!
07. More people spawning in?! There are 6?!
08. “Would you like to respawn at a waypoint?”
09. Complain a lot on guild channel.
10. I’ll be back tomorrow, maybe, and see if a ninja-patch is in place.
Repeat every other day or so.

So the secret’s out .. girls actually DO play video games. (I know fellahs, it’s a shocker) …

But I was more curious about those of us who WvW. Traditionally, I would never have ever set foot in anything pvp-related, but I’ve found myself developing a certain fondness for WvW because it involves strategy and a strong sense of teamwork.

We were talking about this on our forums tonight and I’ll pilfer this data from another server-mate about stats:

Computer/Video Game Industry Demo Data:

- The average gamer is 30 years old and has been playing for 12 years.

- Sixty-eight percent of gamers are 18 years of age or older.

- Forty-seven percent of all players are women, and women over 18 years of age are one of the industry’s fastest growing demographics.

- Today, adult women represent a greater portion of the game-playing population (30 percent) than boys age 17 or younger (18 percent).

For MMORPGs in particular, it’d be a safe estimate to say women make up around a 3rd of the playerbase, though many factors can skew that number for any given game, including genre, level of player-generated content, representation of avatars, etc.


So I’m curious ladies; why do you WvW? And if you do, what role do you find yourself in: support, supply, or out on the front lines bashing some heads?

What most out there should realize is that the “guy” beside you could just be female … and likely kicking your butt

One of the major selling points of this build is the ability to dodge so often, giving you constant evasions and healing, so it’s my opinion that anything besides superior energy would hurt the build pretty badly.

On paper, that stat allotment is more efficient, but it’s assuming 25 stacks of Life. I also have to account for ascended rings which offer no custom gem slot.

However, the biggest thing is the reliance on a full or near-full stack of Life to cover for the loss through gear. 250 healing power is a big blow, no lie. Sure, it’d be great when you had a full stack, but how often will that happen unless you’re running in a zerg?

Good points though. I’ve been meaning to look into reworking the build a bit without it having to rely on a stackable sigil. This is something I can use.

Edit: I don’t change too much for dungeons. I’ll swap to the consecration trait and run WoR for a lot of stuff, but any little changes really depend on the dungeon. I’ve actually taken to running glass cannon builds in PvE though. It’s just faster as long as you don’t get hit.
