Both Guardian and Ele have great healing abilities and Thieves have….um, have…, kittens, I’m drawing a blank here.
guardians and eles have access to almost perma protection and vastly superior healing.
thief has stealth…and evades. both getting nurfed next patch. we’re fast becoming irrelevant.
Stealth isnt being nerfed Mr. Doom and Gloom. Relax and let’s see how it plays out first.
Skritt Happens
I’ve been both on the receiving end and the dealing end of the tank + Thief combo.
It’s incredibly powerful and I can understand why some consider it OP. It’s very hard to counter such a high pressure Thief when you’ve got other thing exploding and knocking around you.
What you’re doing, and what he’s doing in the video… it’s called coordinating, if you mean the combo in general… I’m sorry that those people he killed in the video mindlessly kept running forward as one of their buddies was getting plowed … It’s OP that they’re mindless, i will give you that.
Sick video, makes me wanna play and try to do that :P
Before people go off using this as “OMG thief OP 1v900000 THIEVES TOO STRONK LOOKZ AT DIS VIDEOZ”….
Probably stating the obvious, he was jumping in and out trying to “assassinate” targets… sometimes (1:30-1:40) he even came close to dieing, but he knew what to do and gtfo…. waited at low health to strike again when ready….
Not putting you down, just saying, you clearly knew what you were doing… and it shouldn’t be interrupted as mindless facerolling. GJ
Only used 2 clips this time, no solo roaming actually. Used a D/D Ele to kite most of the enemies while I try to take them down one by one.
So while we watch the right hand … what is happening with the left hand …
“Whose Charr is this?”- “Ted’s.”
“Who’s Ted?”- “Ted’s dead, baby. Ted’s dead.”
The glass cannon argument is poor insofar that one-shot mechanics do not make up a majority of the content. Sure there are bosses in some areas that do, but why make a build for such a small % of the content? If you get one shot you get one shot, I’d rather worry about a build that I like for the rest of the content that isn’t one-shot mechanics.
So I completely disagree with OP’s premise that because some bosses have one-shot mechanics that armor is useless in this game.
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
I prefer my method.
Run through as thief solo and skillfully.
It’s quite fun and requires less caution when people do dumb things around you.
As a thief, I pretty much stealth my way through and hide at corners, especially the maze near the end of stage, until mobs walk away. It’s like playing MGS1, you need to be patient, a lot.
You(The players) asked for harder content.
You(The players) will now deal with what you get.
Irony that the hallucinated Trahearne is about ten times stronger than the real one. I would’ve been more than happy to have tree-boy in his… I mean my personal story if he was more of a butt-kicking monster and not a pencil-pushing scholar who dies in a few hits despite being a multiclassing legendary greatsword necro.
I’m usually really sweet… but this an internet forum and you know how it has to be.

This entire assertion is…extremely wrong…in a bunch of places.
First of all, your base comparison is using a 0/20/10/20/5 spec (with 15 leftover points), with every optional initiative gain trait slotted. It’s an awful spec that would never work. Your conclusion is based on the same spec, and is thus completely wrong.
Secondly, your post Dec 10th Opportunist math looks off (you should realistically be getting 10-12 init per minute)
Then there’s just a bunch of other “math” that you just sloppily assert without giving us any idea how you got to your end numbers.
It also relies on using abilities like steal and signets the second its up regardless of situation, which is unrealistic to put it mildly.
This post is probably better left ignored until you clean up pretty much everything in it, otherwise you’re going to be spreading blatant misinformation.
pre-ordered HOT at this point,
save yourself the money and don’t bother.

In my day we’d be lucky to get a whole fragment! And we’d have to go uphill both ways to get it.

Can’t even see! What are you seeing?? Other than a low-detail poorly textured version of Guild Wars 2 :-)
there wont be another alliance,
molten alliance = red
aetherblades = blue
Toxic alliance = green
all amount to the tricolours, im guessing she used these factions as building blocks to build the ultimate machine, whatever that is i dont know, maybe some sort of doomsday device

The light-armoured classes each have a different healthpool. The Necromancer has the highest healthpool in the game (joint with the Warrior), along with a secondary healthbar. Mesmers fall into the middle class in terms of health (alongside the Engineer and Ranger). Elementalists are at the bottom (with the Thief and Guardian).
Armour Rating is only part of the issue.
However, all classes, even super-squishy Elementalists and Thieves, have ways to mitigate, avoid, circumvent and otherwise deal with the damage. To survive to the top on your own, you simply need to know how to play your class. You can’t rely on armour or health to carry you to the top as in other games.
Love the tower…
A big thumbs up from me, for this entire event.
I think they got the difficulty spot on, the achievements are not a burden and its fun to run the tower, doing the nightmare chambers on the way.
For me the entire Kessex Hills/tower living story as to go down as one of the best from Anet…well done!
The only sad face from me, is it isn’t permanent…
It seems all the best living story chapters that I really like are ALWAYS TEMPORARY!
Molten Forge Dungeon – Temp, once only.
Mad Kings Dungeon – Temp, once only.
Queens Jubilee – Temp, once only.
Kessex Hills/Tower – Temp, once only.
Why? From my point of view are all the best bits of the LS always temporary, one shot deals? Its so sad…
Add me to the list of people impressed by the Nightmares Within content. The Tower is attractive to look at, memorable, and the Nightmare Chambers/Heart being soloable with character-specific lore helps build the story. The fact that the achievements are fairly light also means it’s easy to knock them out in a day or two of playing, and then return to your normal routine (or keep farming the Tower, as one likes).
My only wish? That the final battle with the Toxic Hybrid had Marjory/Kasmeer AND Rox/Braham with you. I so badly want to fight a boss with all four of my new friends beside me.
Incidentally, I think the difficulty of the Hybrid is spot on. He’s definitely soloable, but he can be trickier on certain builds. My Mesmer wiped once because she couldn’t destroy the Toxic Blooms fast enough to avoid it filling almost the entire room. I imagine I won’t have any issues on my Ranger (pet for tanking, Barrage and Axe for AoE damage), Ele (TONS of AoE), Warrior (incredible sustain) or Necro (minion army) though.

Wanted to toss in my voice of this tower being a great deal of fun and yet challenging. I love how the instances blended in with the open world feel of the place. A tower has always been a great symbol of classic adventuring. Higher up you go, the more danger and rewarding it can be. A dungeon structure going up instead of down. Has a great feel to it and something I loved seeing in this game. Reminds me a bit of “Tower of Druaga” in many good ways.
I am looking forward to returning to it several times over during the coming weeks.
I did it fine with my glass thief, but I was spending a whole lot of time in stealth and using tons of shadowsteps. In hindsight, it would have been much more fun and productive if I had simply swapped to more defensive setup. Glass isn’t always the answer. People have gotten it in their heads that all pve must be “burn down and forget it”. But honestly this is the worst kind of L2P issue. Need to L2P something besides glass cannons lol. Everything has a time and place.
~Surrender fiend and you will get an easy death
~I could promise you the same…but it would be a lie…
I have to agree. I thoroughly enjoy the tower, The side instances are good. The over-all feel of the tower is good…it really makes you feel like you are invading a tower and that the bad guys are putting more and more resistance against you. I felt like it really made you want to work together towards a goal also.
I started out with 3 of us in a party, but quickly ran into 2 more people who were downed where we had to clear the bad-guys to help them up. One of those two joined our party while the other one quickly ran off ahead as soon as we raised them…he quickly learned the error of his ways as he died just a little ways further once more….and even though I argued not to raise him (he did, after-all deserve his death from running off) my party-mates raised the guy, who then joined our party and stayed with us from then on (even raising us as we went down).
We ended up hooking up with even more groups as we went up the tower, our force growing from 3-5-9-15-20-25 people as we went further and further up the tower. By the time we reached the final instance I actually feldt a good comraderie with my fellow players (myself and 2 other guardians kept rotating our walls of reflections to defend the ranged players from ranged attacks from the creatures we were melee’ing, we all worked together with Ele’s and rangers putting down wells to heal us and remove conditions…‘stand your ground’ was constantly being shouted and “for great justice” by warriors.
It felt good to not have anyone griefing, or screaming “L2P IDIOTS!” like has been happening lately in a lot of the LS content.
My only complaint is that the story didn’t really progress. We really didn’t learn much about Scarlet or her motivations….but overall I enjoyed it.
4 hours spent in the tower as glasscanon thief and i never died. I was going up, down, killing mobs and champs in all levels, sometime with a zerg sometime without. To get on top without any zerg or party through lvl 3 i was only runing, stealthing and dodging.
Actualy i really recommend the thief for the tower. Btw, i use 15 on acrobatics, thats insane.
Yes, but a total waste of supply to place that in the ruins. The TC in the photo is a recruit and probably doesn’t know any better. That’s especially true if you look at the scoreboard. TC is probably starved for supply at that time and shouldn’t be wasting it.
The stealth traps are much more valuable in order to combat a veil during a zerg fight.
The thief is from JQ and probably doesn’t know any better either apparently as it seems.
I was skeptical. Very skeptical.
Based on the previous few updates I think I was quite justified in being so skeptical.
Gotta be said, I’m stunned. You’ve somehow meshed “open world” and “dungeon” together in a way I didn’t expect. The beginning, lowest level is very zergy, but after a short time people split up, generally into smaller groups and is far more enjoyable then.
The scale of the inside of the tower is just right. The little instances are a pretty enjoyable break from the main world. I absolutely love the changes in the tower as you ascend it – the ambient sounds getting creepier and more insane. Thus far, a good job all ’round.
Getting poked by a thorn….
Ummm…. our characters are dying from pollen mines, hit by toxic projectiles- like arrows, and get toxic spores as back packs…
If they use this thorn as a plot device then dear lord….
I’m usually typing on my phone
Yeah, I’m part of the “Quip is hideous” party. If you enjoy offhand pistol enough to go through all the trouble of making it or getting the gold to buy it, though—and you’re determined not to play Thief anymore—just leave both weapons on your Thief, park it at the end of a jumping puzzle, and wait for better days.
If you do salvage Quip and they make Thief better in a later patch, you’ll hate yourself.
By Ogden’s hammer, what savings!
there is no reason atm for having a thief in a medium/big group.
We are good for skirmish in a small, very mobile group. We can kill ppl fast and stealth ress or stealth stomp.
When numbers grow up a bit we become almost useless.
Warriors, guardians, necros do it better
I’m sorry, but if you want to be remotely non-selfish then a Thief is not the class for you – all you bring are blast finishers and stealth. In group combat, the role you can fulfill is picking off the back-line when they are not really paying attention. Venoms and traps haven’t made a lot of sense for the longest period of time.
