PtW games in mmo’s are ones that offer items that are only sold in the game companies cash shop and do not drop or are craftable ingame. Often these items will be the best stat items in game and offer a real advantage to players willing to shell out the cash.

Usually you only see this in open PvP games where the person with the fattest wallet is often the one at the top of the PvP ranking boards .. thereby … winning……

Old-school MMO : A person making 25K a year was equal to a person making $250K , in the game world. Now they are not. The MMO was an escape into another world, where we are all equal and only hard work and dedication would bring you great rewards. Now you just open your real world wallet. It has killed what an MMO used to be.

back in 1999 I knew a guy who was very wealthy who played Everquest, he had a T3 commercial line run into his house (most were playing on dial up back then) and had a bank of 24 computers installed so he could run 24 game clients …

he even ran his own raids…

and rumor was he even hired the neighbourhood kids to play his characters and level them while he was at work.. so yes even back in the “golden age” of MMO’s RL cash would give an advantage …

and I wont even start on how you could buy a max level characters or a cloak of flames right off E-bay back then…..

personaly I would have picked Secret World, though I imagine when you compare the commercial success of the two games GW2 wins hand down.

and while I agree there is not much “role” in GW2 it still has classes and is close enough in my eyes to be under consideration as a mmorpg imho

I mean in RL I would never wear a halter top, micro-mini skirt and 5" heels … but I would not call for them to be banned just because I dont like them.

[quote=989584;critickitten.1498And I didn’t comment on either Tera or Lineage 2’s server counts, if you read more carefully, so not sure why you brought them up. Is it because I stated that SWTOR’s population is now closer to competing with them (which is factually true)? Because there’s a difference between “number of servers” and “number of players”, you know.[/quote]

All very true, I just mentioned the other two as they are still listed as being “top 10” MMO’s games out there as a comparison. It’s interesting to see games as old as Everquest (1999) running with 12+ server still.. though as you state you never know how many people are on them.

and also consider more modern games are build to take advantage of the latest chips, think back to when EQ wa released the fastest computer was the single core Pentium III – 733 (I think) .. I was playing on a Celeron 300 with a original TnT card .. with (16 megs on it!)

Im sure more modern games such as GW2 can handle many more people on them even compared to games just released 3 or 4 years ago.

also had a White dye drop so even her outfits are white now! .. though I also like to use the “Ice” range of dyes .. I find they seem to work well with a white skinned yuki-onna.

LOL learn your facts first please. Like someone already said, ToR had a lot more servers then GW2.

TOR released with 103 servers, according to information I’ve located online. It’s down to 20 servers as of this date, less than GW2 and less than other competitors such as Rift and Aion.

GW2 released with 52. And still has that many.

Maybe next time, before shooting your mouth off, do a little internet research to make sure you know what you’re talking about, ya?

Ummm, Rift only has 18 Servers …. and Aion has 5 North American (basicly international) servers total. (there are more localized Aion Korean/Japanese/Chinese one but they have limited access)

Tera only has 3 servers and I think last time I looked Lineage 2 (again outside of asia) only has 3 or 4 ..

That’s a load of crock. Unless you’re joining an elitist Fractals grinding group or a dungeon running group full of morons nobody is going to complain about you playing support.

Smart players know the value of support in making runs smoother and making up for individual deficiencies. I’d rather take 45 minutes on a dungeon path because we had a few support characters but have a more fun and relaxing time than have a 30 minute run with 5 straight Berserkers frantically dodging every which way living on the razor’s edge.

oh I agree, but just read through this thread… its an opinion experessed by several posters here.

Let people build thier characters into the style THEY want to play

and how does this effect me and the rest of the people who cower in fear of the lot of you blowhards? The kind of damage that enemies would need to do in order to threaten the tank / healer combo would DECIMATE people who are playing balanced builds. Currently, if I miss one dodge on my Knight/Soldier combo geared characters, I’m usually hurt pretty bad, but it won’t end my fight. Change that attack so that it now threatens characters who are built with “Super-Soldier” class gear that is ALL Vitality and Toughness and my hybrid is going to be one-shotted immediately.

We can’t have both crowds happy here. If dedicated roles creep into this game, they’ll kill the people who want to be balanced and well rounded. And the honest truth is that we were the target audience so we by all rights have precedent. Leave our game alone.

Balanced builds? check each class forum, recommended builds are 30 – 30 .. and put the other 10 into something or other because you cant get anymore into the first two…. load up on +Power gear and go blow things up… DPS is King and Queen and basicly the only game in town.

I dont see any balance here at all.

I would just like to be able to so something more than give 2 -3second buffs and DPS.

And as an ele you can.

You can destroy projectiles, grant aura’s to allies, create water fields, CC the enemy, apply conditions to the enemy, provide some off healing to allies, create combo fields, and use blast finishers to help you allies ( assuming that one of them put down a water combo field you can heal them around you with that.).

As an ele you can do pretty much do everything.
Support, DPS, and Tank.

All in the same build.

What you cant do is hold someones hand.

I do agree with you, elementalist is one of my favorite class’s for it versitility but if I do all the things you suggest we have already seen several people comment in this thread alone that doing anything but maximizing your personal DSP is cutting into the efficiency of the group and would result in them never wanting to play with you again…..

see I always found playing DPS boring, hit auto attack and read a book untill the mob is dead not the sort of play is not for me, I always enjoyed being a buffer / healer (I played 12 year of Everquest as a Cleric or Enchanter).

Yes in GW it is a bit more active with dodge, but is it really that much of a challange to see your standing in a fire field and press V? all the while not slowing down on spamming DPS or else someone will accuse you of not contributing to the efficiancy of the group?

I would just like to be able to so something more than give 2 -3second buffs and DPS.

now saying that I think they almost have it right with the way they made the elementalist and thier Fire/Water/Earth/Air and to a lesser extend the Trait system…

let people pick what type of style they want to play .. want to be a healing? … click a button and boom your the healer! or spec your character for Tanking, or DPS. (to a much greater extent they they do now)

Let people build thier characters into the style THEY want to play

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Open world, mostly because I do not often have a big block of time to play GW, so I tend to avoid group activities or dungeons that require you to pay attention to the computer for 30+ minutes at a time.

Due to children, work, cooking, cleaning, laundry, husband wanting sex etc .. I have to AFK quite often,

Akiko.2364

I’ve been amazed that people think anything in GW2 is grindy, though I guess it is subjective, but I think back to when it took me 6 solid weeks of play to get from level 59 to 60 in hell level days of Everquest one or that it takes billions of exp to get to max level in Lineage 2……. Games that take months or years of play just to get up in levels! .. with no thought of even getting close to having any “top gear” from them… that is grindy. (to me)

When I first started playing GW2 I leveled so fast and gear was showered down on me in such volumn I told my friends it reminded me of a old fasioned “Monty Haul” dungeon (for you old AD&D players out there!).

The perfect MMORPG.

Akiko.2364

I’m interested in seeing how the next generation of Sandbox MMO’s work out, these are games like Archage, Black Desert, Blessed, Everquest Next which will have no (or very little) linear content or in some cases class’s .. you just roll your character and it gets dropped into a world and away you go.

If you just want to build a farm and raise cows go for ir!
If you want to build a castle and rule a kingdom, go for it!
if you want to raid boss’s and dungeons, go for it!

In some ways GW2 tries this, but it really is more of a theme park mmo with the linear personal story lines and stepped zone progression.

I bought GW2 because the graphics looked nice and while I never played GW1 it always had a good reputation, my son was in the beta and he spoke highly of it.

I’ve enjoyed how they run dynamic events and heart quest and even try some jumping puzzles, though im terrible at them…..

I enjoy exploring the world and dont farm or spend a lot of money or worry about gear or stats or anything like that so if there is a gear grind or not in GW2 dosn’t affect me in the slightest.

type Z here!

I only PvE, am level 80 but only have an exotic sword, rest of my gear is yellow or green .. and I dont really care if I get anything better soon. If I get something to drop thats better I wil use it, but I dont farm for things.

I’m not driven to max out my stats or pick the perfect traits or skills, or use the ultimate weapon Sigil combinations… I just want to have fun playing.

Only do dungeons for fun with guildies.. and we laugh more at how spectacularly each other dies than worry about the stats on that BP that dropped.

Really it’s the way I always played mmo’s .. I have played EQ for the last 12 years and had over 500 Days played on some of my Everquest characters and never had the best or top gear on any of them… not worth the fret.

As we all have to keep explaining to you people, the server lists population based on people registered to the server itself. It doesn’t matter if they even play the game any more.

if that is the case, how come my sever switches between high and full quite often…I have been keeping track for a friend on another server to transfer over … but every time I saw it just high and called her by the time she logged on it had changed back to full… she was finely able to do the transfer just two days ago.

would be interesting to be able to play other factions of existing races as well. for example maybe Silent or nightmare court Silvari. and in the personal story it mentions that there are other Mother Tree’s out there with other types of Silvari as well.

Im sure we will be finding all the older cities in GW1 as well and they will end up being starter cities for variant human races as well…

and for those who say dwarves are all turned to stone, its broadly hinted in several heart quest around that there is a good possibility that not all the dwarves are dead and gone.
