“I have the worst combo field in the game!”
“Why am I so slow in combat?”
“This torch is so useful.”
“Melee range is too dangerous — I don’t have enough ways to mitigate damage!”
“This mantra build was the best idea I’ve ever had!”
“No wait, scratch that, this scepter build is!”
I’ve already spent cash on 1200 gems for opening his bag slots. I will not reroll. Looks like I’m stuck with a lazy eye.
That’s not a bug at all, that’s how eyes are supposed to look. Eyes don’t perfectly stare at the same spot, one is always slightly off to create depth and help you see things one eye would miss. In fact if you look at just about anyone’s face, or even in a mirror you’ll find that one of your eyes is off set in gaze from the other, by a slight amount.
If anything you’ve shown a good deal of care was put in to giving the face a natural appearance.
I can’t tell if you’re serious or trolling, dude.
Hey, Devs? What’s up with this? I’ve noticed a strange reaction to my sylvari’s eyes and, while rather humorous, it should be fixed. Here’s what I’ve collected data-wise so far;
In the Day Time, the eyes do NOT get bugged while looking in opposite direction of the light source, or otherwise known as being shadowed.
However, while looking in the direction of the light source in the environment, my Sylvari’s eyes bug out; thus the “Lazy Eye” effect.
Also, as another note; This effect is very minimal and hardly noticeable at night time when looking towards a light source. Here are multiple pictures I’ve taken;

Yeah. I felt like Thief got left out as well, Yami. Even the WARRIOR gets it.
Already made a suggestion in the suggestion forums, but… Wouldn’t it be nice to have some sort of trait that allows pistol shots to pierce on critical hits or to have at least a 20% chance to pierce per shot? Pistols already lack AoE as it is and some of us don’t like shortbow. It wouldn’t make pistols stronger than shortbow for AoE, yet it would give it an opportunity for AoE damage.
Besides, I think it’d be interactive, fun, and engaging to try and line your shots up just right to pierce targets.
Ricochet: Pistol shots have 5% chance to bounce to an additional target.
Lame, boring and underpowered in my honest opinion. Why not remake this trait into something useful? Pistols already lack any AoE, so why don’t we give them some with a trait like this:
Piercing Rounds: Pistol shots have a 20% chance to pierce targets in a line.
OR
Why not remake Ankle Shots: 60% chance to cripple an enemy for 3 seconds (10-second cooldown). Let’s face it; 3 seconds is next to nothing and on a ten second cool down? Maybe if the cooldown was 5 seconds I’d find it even worth considering over the other damage dealing abilities.
Let’s remake this one into a different kind of Piercing Rounds;
Piercing Rounds: Pistol shots have a 60% chance to penetrate targets in a line on critical hits.
This is fun — no, I dare say way more fun than “Oh look, a chance to place a condition on an enemy.” With a trait like this, you actually have to line yourself up and strive to keep enemies in a line, which would be fun, involving, and interactive. Way better than a crappy, 3 second cripple.
Anyone feel the same?
Love this game, love its aesthetics, love its combat, love everything about it… but there are a few small things that bother me as an individual. I’ve heard this complaint a couple times as well, but I won’t say I speak for the community. (Because, well, I don’t. It’d be ignorant to believe that.)
I’m curious as to why a First Person View mode for the camera was not implemented in an MMORPG. It seems like a pretty well-known standard that all MMO’s implement this. Did the coding for it just not work with the camera? Or is there another reason?
Whatever the case, I’d really, really like to urge you to implement a first person view, ANet. I know I’m not the only one out there that likes to make video’s using in-game footage or take nice screenshots that don’t have to include my character in it.
A hobby of mine is to make stylized videos for events/guilds/personal characters (see this example here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXVQYFI83HE ) and I do that with a screen capturing software and use First Person View so that my screen acts like a movie camera.
I cannot make anything stylized like the way I want to with the camera as it is currently because I cannot zoom into first person view.
Does anyone else understand where I’m coming from?
The sad thing is that it seems community is supposed to do the developing these days, but still pay the “developers”.
The good thing is there are people intelligent enough and with enough good will (and spare time) to do other people’s jobs for the greater good of us gamers.
ANet, take the free advice you’ve been offered right here and do GW2 some justice. Shame on you.
Not everyone believes this combat system is stale and/or bad. And don’t says “us gamers”. You don’t speak for me, nor my friends, nor the random people I play with.
I’m pretty freakin’ happy with the product I have now. Some people aren’t. That’s why they are here suggesting ideas. But that’s what this is; a suggestion thread. Not a “Let’s bash ANet, guys!” thread. They poured hours into this game and I can say that, as a game developer myself, the last thing I’d want to hear is “You’re lazy!” It’s obvious they put a lot of effort into the game. The 61+ critics on Metacritic can see that. Not sure why you can’t.
With all that being said, allow me to actually contribute to this thread;
1st things 1st: I don’t find the game stale in any way, shape, or form. However, I am always open to more ideas that can add even more depth to the combat system.
For starters, Lance, I really like the idea of having multiple skill options for weapon skills. My only concern is… why? When a weaponset is already balanced and achieves a set goal, why add more skills for no reason?
Take the warrior for example (since that profession is easy to explain):
Swords = Condition damage.
Axes = critical damage/combination of single target and AoE damage.
Maces = Crowd control and blocks.
Hammers = Crowd control and AoE.
Greatsword = Heavy duty AoE
Rifles = Single target ranged damage.
Longbows = AoE ranged damage.
Shields = Block and Crowd Control.
With all these weapons already doing nearly every sort of ‘damage role’ in the game, why would ANet bother to add more skills just so Sword/Sword can be a defensive weapon instead of a condition damage based weapon when Mace/Mace or Mace/Shield is designed for such defensive purposes?
Mind you I’m not attempting to be rude in any way, shape, or form. I’m just expressing my thoughts about your suggestion. I respect my fellow players
Jesus, people. Get a guild, jump on vent/mumble, enjoy a conversation with your friends, go after achievements, earn some ectos, strive for a legendary weapon, earn the cosmetic looks you want, go WvWvW and earn benefits for your server, take some temples in Orr, deck yourself out in exotics, get 100% Map Completion, get the Commander manual (because nothing says ’I’m filthy kitten rich’ like blowing 100g on a title!)
The list just goes on and on and on and on…
And before you argue “All of dat iz are grindzzssz!1!!” take a moment to realize, uh, hello? Every MMO is “grindy”. It takes work to earn titles and certain things. Shocker.
Go to the Heart of the Mists and go to the PvP locker. You can preview ERRRRTING there.
I just wanted to add to this that I play at 1980×1200 with a 26" monitor and I have no issues at all with playing this game. I don’t get motion sickness, no eye/head aches, and no nausea. The only thing bothering me is the tight spaces in dungeons where I can’t properly adjust my camera position due to the lack of space.
However, I do believe that with this many play complaints, ANet should really listen to their community.
Now, about Chaos Storm. This was the change that upset me personally. Spontaneous AoE damage is a place that mesmers struggle when compared to Eles, Necros, Warriors, Rangers….just about anyone. Let me define what I mean by that. Mesmers have three main sources of aoe:
1) Chaos Storm (Long recharge, condition/dot based)
2) iBerserker/Warden (Great damage but doesn’t always attack immediately when spawned)
3) Shatter (Requires illusions to be out, illusions require target mobs to be present.)snip
Rampup? Have you seen the cast times on abilities? With sword/sword or GS, and proper traiting (see my sig), I can spawn clones/phantasms constantly, between shortened cooldowns and dodges. Our aoe burst is amazing with sword 2 and shatters.
0 – Start
0.75s – Clone or phantasm ability 1
1.5s – Clone of phantasm ability 2
2.5s – dodge complete
2.5s – shatter for 15k+ damageMeanwhile, sword 2 can drop 5k+ easily. If you summoned the GS phantasm you just did 3k+ aoe damage, or 4-5k with swordsman in one hit. By my math, with some lucky crits, you easily just dumped 25k damage in 3 seconds. I do this ALL THE TIME in WvW and PvE (dungeons, and solo farming), and it’s a freaking joke. Sure, I have full exotic gear, but it’s not hard to get.
Please stop making sweeping generalizations about the mesmer community or the class because you copied a PVP BUILD created by someone like Taugrim and tried to make it work in PvE. Sword/Pistol + STaff is NOT going to work very well outside of PvP, espcially with a ton of trait points in survival trees. Experiment, make up your own mind, and be creative.
As much as you’d like to preach otherwise, Xyrm, mesmers do fall behind in the AoE category, especially when farming Orr events. Mind Wrack is not instant and the clone AI stinks to the point they run around after the mobs, following some crazy trail before they even explode. iBerserker does tend to fail every so often, waiting before actually attacking. Not to mention it only spins in a straight line; this path is not chosen by the mesmer. Therefore, your iBerserker could just float off entirely the wrong direction and hit 2-3 mobs out of 10 that you were hoping to hit.
Also, way to go with attacking the OP after he spoke with a clear, respectful manner and stated his opinions. Just because you feel strongly about your opinions doesn’t mean they’re right and/or more important than someone else’s.
To Terrant;
I have to agree with most of your post. The changes had me boggled myself. I have a problem with ANet nerfing my phantasms when they can already be one-shotted fairly easily. And Chaos Storm did not need that nerf. It was one of the few place-able AoE’s we had that did mediocre damage at best.
Dear Anet, please explain to us why these changed were made. A lot of us are confused. Thank you for your time.
EDIT: I also wanted to add that if these changes were made for PvP and not PvE, why haven’t they separated the skills yet? Mesmer PvE is already hurting.
Guys, buying gold is against the User Agreement and the Rules of Conduct. It’s also harmful to the game as a whole. I mean, do you really want to encourage gold advertisers in the game? Would you want to give a boost to account thieves? (And trust me, most RMT accounts are stolen)
Gold buying from third parties: Don’t do it. Please.
You’re completely right, Gaile. Buying gold is against the User Agreement and it is an imminent problem.
However, another major issue is how many hours one must pour into this game just to make a profit. I play quite often at level 80 and I’m actually penalized for playing longer than 2 hours, receiving Diminishing Returns in the final zone because everything is Risen and I’ve killed too many to be qualified as a “bot”. This is completely unfair to the people who are out there and playing just because they enjoy the game and have a lot more time to play it than others.
So, in verdict, ANet needs to remove this ridiculous DR system. People can’t sit down and enjoy the game when they can’t get loot for their efforts. And that’s all that matters at level 80; making a profit and getting those exotics. Since you aren’t requiring a monthly fee out of us, why are you nickle and diming us for every single small detail?
Waypoints cost way too much. They were free in the last game. Why aren’t they free here? Making us pay for waypoints AND for repair costs upon death by mobs? Also completely unfair. Not to mention it’s even more of a pain to earn crafting materials with such small bag space. Making us pay for materials inside of a merchant to craft something is way overdoing it.
In short, stop nickle and diming us. It isn’t fair and it makes players feel like you’re abusing their time spent in your amazing online world. Please, remove this system.

“Mesmer is bad because I can’t play it” speaks for itself. :P
I’m on Tarnished Coast, which is full more often than not.
It’s not about that. The situation is that there are 40 players dropping AOEs where the mobs spawn. They are using sustained GTAOEs so the AOEs are basically on the spot 24×7. You have about 1.0-2.5 seconds (depending on the DE and how many players of which classes) max to get any damage on the mob to get credit for $ and loot.
I’ve been in Orr for about a week now and I’ve not seen this problem. Even with all the AoE’s, I still managed to get illusions and berseker up before shattering/switching to sword to use blurred frenzy for further AoE damage. By the end of it, I’m swimming in a sea of glowing Orrian corpses… that are dead. Like, really dead, not undead dead. :P
EDIT: If wanted, I could post a video later tonight that shows what I’m talking about.
Ah, alright. 5 targets max for MW. Which still is good. 2800 crits are just beautious
Eh… I’m still confused as to why 1.5 and 3-4 seconds is a huge difference. What class can rack up over 11k damage in 1.5 seconds that isn’t melee?
Don’t give up, Whisky! It’s a hard class to learn, but you reap some serious benefits when you can pull off said "Neo"ness
If you have to use every weapon skill on your bar and multiple shatters to kill a single mob in that amount of time, you’re doing it wrong. My mesmer chops undead in Orr apart within 4-6 seconds at max with only using one weapon set and a single shatter (Mind Wrack).
would Mesmers be over powered if illusions persisted until out of combat?
in Mesmer
Posted by: Amiron.1067
It’d be nice, but I’m not sure it’s necessary. We’re already successful with them the way they are, and we can generate so many illusions in mere seconds it’s ridiculous.
@Sabbathius: Your post is FULL of errors, bud. Let me help explain some things to you since you (and many others) can’t seem to understand Mesmers have some of the greatest AoE in the game.
So, where to start? Bounce attacks are completely misunderstood. Sure, you can have it hit another mob, which is nice, but stop for a moment and contemplate this; they bounce to allies and buff them as well. So, taking that into consideration, that means winds of chaos can give you multiple stacks of might and stacking durations of fury (which is awesome) and Mirror Blade (GS #2) can potentially give you up to 12 stacks of Might. That is a lot of might, bud.
Okay, so, you’ve bounced your skills back onto yourself and gained might/fury. What next? Assuming you weren’t ridiculously silly and took Scepter as a second weapon and took Sword/offhand for your second weapon set, now is a good time to switch and unleash the storm with Blurred Frenzy (Sword #2, not #3 btw). That attack hits up to 5 enemies and at level 80 in rare gear and exotic weapons I hit all the way up into the 5000’s with it. Again, I repeat, that is a lot of damage. AND YOU’RE FREAKIN’ INVULNERABLE FOR THE DURATION OF IT! I call h4x!!
Okay, maybe you’re not into sword OR staff. That leaves your handy dandy greatsword (I don’t even consider scepter to be worthy of being named a weapon). #4, Illusionary Berserker, is your best friend for AoE. He hits EVERYTHING in his path for RIDICULOUS numbers when traited. Just be careful about where you conjure him so you don’t put him in a red circle, ending his phantasmal life before it even begins
Let’s not forget your #3, Mind Stab. Sure, it’s a small radius, but man if you can set it up right it can hit a lot of enemies and hard. It even removes boons! Remember that stupid regenerating mob? Yeah, he’s not regenerating anymore.
So let’s say all of this still isn’t enough AoE for you. Fine. We have a beauty called Mind Wrack. And before you claim shatters are broken, I want to assure you that Mind Wrack is one of the few that isn’t. With 10 points in the power trait line, you can select a major trait that increases this baby’s damage by 20%. Do you know how hard Mind Wrack’s hit for when you have it traited with three illusions out? It has a much larger radius than you think and it can hit a near endless amount of targets. I get 2000 crits PER ILLUSION with this sucker.
In short, AoE on the Mesmer is phenomenal. It just takes a lot of dedication to set it up prior to unleashing the chaos that is your AoE DPS. A tip for those who have trouble with Mind Wrack; be sure to pick mobs that have a lot of health like veterans or just plain meaty mobs when you begin to summon your illusions for AoE. This way you won’t end up having your illusion fade early due to the death of your target and it leaves you plenty of time to get three up for a massive Mind Wrack.
It really isn’t hard to get three illusions up quickly, either. 3-4 seconds at maximum, and if your team somehow kills them within that time, then you just have a freakin’ awesome team.
I rest my case.
2 million sales in just a month and you’re thinking this game did bad? What drugs are you on? Thats fantastic in the market industry and it’s a brand new MMO, not an expansion for a game people already know about. WoW didn’t become king instantaneously, dude.
Personal Story was fun until after Claw Island. It just got… really stale. Also, I’m extremely disappointed that I couldn’t have Lord Faren stay with me the entire way. I love that guy, and it was such a waste to only keep him around for ten-ish levels.
ANet needs to stop killing off characters and stop with a formulaic pattern. They also needed to give us a choice in how we wanted our character’s voice to sound and what he could say. Overall, Personal Story is an overglorified traditional questing style that didn’t achieve much. It needs far more depth and better writing if they want to keep the player’s interest.
GW2 Evolutionizes more than it Revolutionizes. However, it’s the highest production quality I’ve ever seen in a MMO to date. Tons of voice acting, quality art and graphics, fresh and exciting combat, and topped off with no subscription fee. It’s innovative in my mind, at least.
I agree; the DR is cruel to players who just have a lot of time on our hands. We don’t want socialism! Can you please give us a response ANet? A lot of us are confused and just want some insight as to what’s going on. :T
Fraps is crap, quite honestly. Go for Playclaw. It doesn’t lag you to the depths of Orr and back :P
This, my good sir, is amazing. It is insightful, even for a veteran like myself. And it has great humor! Dwayna would be proud… Did you mention something about the Queen having a thing for…? Ah nevermind!
In all seriousness, though, thank you, Eveningstar. I had almost given up on my Guardian and this will probably help keep him off the shelf even though my main is mesmer. Oh, and you’re Tarnished Coast as well? Fantastic! Maybe we’ll see each other around.
/hi5’s for RP
If they ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO CHANGE IT, I hope they only change it for PvP.
Single target = iSwordsman. Super survivable and does amazing damage.
AoE = iBerserker. Spin to win, sucka!
:D
Pyronix, I’m on a mobile device so my response won’t be as elaborate as I want it to be, but here we go; A mesmer and a ranger are on two different ends of the spectrum. Rangers are a lot easier to play. Mesmers are just as capable of performing deeds that other professions can do, however it takes a lot more effort and thinking along with wits and fast reaction times. Do NOT take this as me saying any class that’s easy to play is bad. To elaborate further, what I specifically mean is this; it is easier to do average on a ranger than it is to do on a mesmer. This does not mean that the ranger or any other simpler class cannot be complex or take time to master. Overall, though, the mesmer just takes twice as much effort to do the same thing, WHICH ISN’T A BAD THING!!! A lot of people enjoy the fact they’re higher maintenance.
TL;DR – It is a very highly powerful class that takes twice the amount of manpower to play.
Clones = meatshields and shatter ammunition.
Phantasms = Moar Dps.
That’s the dumbed down version. :P
Qelris, if they EVER do that, I think I will really, really hate ANet.
I hope they only change Portal for PvP. Because it’s easily one of my top 10 reasons why I love my mesmer right now.
Shhh, Portal is useless for exploration. The only thing that matters in this game is running in a straight line across the whole map.
Portal is bad for solo exploration, you’re correct. However, I do find it quite useful for friends if they need a hand getting up to a vista or something.
So, in retrospect, everyone should slow down for the mesmers because they help your exploration.
If you take time to really learn the class, it will get better. If not, then you’ll probably find a guardian more suitable to your needs.
Also, a note: this class doesn’t have design flaws. It has bugs. But it is no where near “unplayable” as you make it out to be.
People in-game = This game is great!
People on forums – QQ I like worse games because I played WoW for 7 years.Yeah, it’s funny how different the forums are from the game.
If all you’re reading is the forums then you imagine GW2 to be an empty, bug filled game with nothing but bots grinding events.
If you’re just playing you know GW2 is a fun game with a good population, even in the mid level zones, and a healthy PvP scene.
Don’t read the forums, is what I’m saying here.
If -anyone- bases their judgement on a game by its forums, they seriously need a reality check.
This game is awesome. Probably why I’m not on the forums much
Heh, you think Ele’s hard? Master the mesmer
this game obviously wasn’t made for me and my ilk (Progression-based players). Oh well, there are things worse than Pandas.
Yup, you’re right. This game was made for people like me.
When I first put on my orange crafted armor and weapons bought at the trading-post, the feeling I got was not “now that I’m max level and max stat, there’s nothing left to do” it was “now that I’m max level and max stat, I’m free to do whatever I feel like and don’t have to worry about rewards.”
This game was meant for me. I don’t care about rewards, I care about how much fun an activity I engage in is for me. Loot just happens. The only reason I wanted full orange was so I knew that everything the game has to offer, I can partake in. And so I help out friends, do jumping puzzles, farm in Orr or go to dungeons whenever I feel like it. And I know that three months from now, ArenaNet will not bring in stuff that my friends will want to do and that I can’t do myself because of gear. I love this game.
I was going to post, but this guy said it for me. Thanks!
Thank you, ANet! My guild and I myself all appreciate your constant support. We love you!
The Mesmer is an EZ mode profession?
Anyone who believes this is severely ignorant and hasn’t actually tried the Mesmer out yet. They’re much more complicated than you may believe. I’ve tried out other classes, and even from the low levels, the Mesmer is a much more difficult profession to completely grasp. People are just finally learning how to play their Mesmers now, and we’re finding out that we’re pretty much only good in 1v1 situations. Anything else and we fall flat.
I had completely agreed with everything you had said until you stated we were only good for 1v1 situations. This is widely misunderstood about mesmers. We can do great AoE, and handle every situation in PvE and somewhat in PvP, but it does take a lot more effort. People who consider shatters useless are sadly mistaken.
Also, to state that a mesmer is easymode has to be the most ridiculous statement I’ve ever seen. They are, to me, the profession with the highest learning curve and the hardest to master. Go play Warrior or Ranger if you want “easy mode”.
I think you people are misunderstanding the purpose of the guild. You’re never supposed to be forced to have to have a guild or even a party to do content in the world that is of normal difficulty, champions being the obvious factor that states “YOU SHOULD HAVE A TEAM TO FIGHT ME!”
I’m in wonderful, small, welcoming guild of roleplayers. We meet every monday night to enjoy company, laugh, boast, etc, and enjoy each other’s company regardless of whether we’re in character or out of character.
Guilds aren’t supposed to be a necessity, but for those who are looking for more social interaction, this is where you start. And of course you’re going to come across guilds that false-advertise “yeah, we’re active” or “yeah, we’re friendly.” That should be a hint at you, saying “it’s time to gtfo of this sh@#hole and find a real guild.”
The legitimate complaints are the ones about traits/abilities not working as intended.
The complaints from people who say, “Th15 cl4ss is br0k3n cus i cnt ki11 <insert mob name here>” are idiots who want to be spoonfed everything. Imagine, a game where you actually have to think to kill a mob. Insane, isn’t it? /rolls eyes.
In a game that isn’t focused upon DPS values, who cares if you get the job done 3-5 seconds later than the guy in full combat stat gear? I like my shinies, so I’ll be specin’ into Magic Find asap.
My best moments so far have been in that level range of 20-40, Ainianu >_>
Tried scepter and hated it. It just feels wimpy in its current state. The block isn’t incredibly useful, the confuse is very… unreliable, and the auto attack is just plain slow. I’ll stick to my sword/sword and GS.
GOSU, I have a level 80 Guardian. Trust me, I know the different perspective. My mesmer is just as good as my guardian, if not better.
I’m beginning to think people that are complaining about mesmer inabilities even after shown a video on how competent they are are just sour because they can’t seem to play one no matter how hard they try.
And Tdc, it takes me literally seconds to destroy a mob in PvE. sometimes all it takes is two attacks. Mirror Blade, build up Power, and then Mind Wrack. If it is taking you ten minutes to kill a veteran, you’re doing it wrong.
Tdc, you’re doing it wrong if you’re DPS is low bud lol.
