Damage Meter

Amiron.1067

I don’t believe that a DPS meter will correctly see skill levels. However, gear inspection will see skill levels better.

A skilled player will avoid damage, a non-skilled player destroys DPS for survivability. The skilled player will not need toughness, vitality, healing power or any defensive stats if he never lost any hp. If the non-skilled player wore Berserker armor and died very often, it will be very easy to notice and you can kick them.

Gear does not equal skill, lol I as my guardian mitigated a AC explore boss ( the troll event ) better than the 80 guardian in HoTW gear. Please Gear = skill in a game that is not gear based. Take that WoWmentality back to WoW, hell even in WoW Gear doesn’t mean you have skill just means you have been carried enough times to get the gear.

You didn’t even read the post.

-Skilled player wear Berserker armor.

-Non-skilled players wear any kind toughness/vit/healing power/defensive stats armor to survive more.

-Skilled players don’t need defensive stats because they can avoid damage. Why bother wearing any other armor if a skilled player takes 0 damage in any kinds of armor.

-Non-skilled players that wear Berserker armor will die very often.

-Skilled players will contribute more DPS and then the boss will die faster.

You think that I am talking about checking Exotics/Masterworks/Rare/Blues and that is completely false.

This is mostly true, with the exception of players that want to be support classes wearing healing power bonuses and such.

There is a certain degree of toughness that is alright, but in all honesty if you’re looking to contribute to the group, you’ll do better being either full on support or complete glass cannon. Many classes have viable ways of mitigating damage without using gear to do so, such as Warrior Greatsword whirling attack or Mesmer Sword Blurred Frenzy (#2). Thief’s attacks have evasions attatched to a lot of them, as do Rangers.

You should not be gearing to be a tank in this game. Here’s why: you dont need one. There’s no solid aggro table, and toughness only gives you the ability to take maybe 2-5 more hits before going down on top of the 3 hits it would already take. If you really want to contribute, hone your reaction times and contribute more dps/support to help end the fight more quickly.

Key points:

-Dodge.
-Evade through skills.
-Don’t be tunnel visioned.

With those three key points, you can be an efficient glass cannon, contribute 5x more than a “beefy” character, and end encounters that much more quickly.

Don’t believe me? Go look up CoF Path 1 speed runs in google/youtube. The path isn’t cleared in ten minutes because of tanky characters, I’ll tell you that much.

Edit: Forgot to actually add to the main idea of the thread, lol. My bad :P

I would like a damage meter, even if it was only showed my DPS alone. It’d help me figure out what’s working and what isn’t.

And don’t feed me the “You can’t correctly judge dps because encounters require you to dodge and move!” If this were the case, Recount in WoW would of been long extinct. You think raiders just sit around and mash buttons? The whole point is to do the best DPS you can WHILE moving out of those red circles, dodging those attacks, and maintaining self-efficiency.

And for those who say this causes people to be judged, well, sorry. Welcome to the real world. I guarantee you people are judging regardless of meters or not being implemented. The idea is to play with people that you want to work with and want to grow in skill with. I’m not saying it’s right to judge someone because of their DPS. But it happens, and you can just assume those people are jerks and ignore them.

But for those of us who really want to bring our characters into their prime, the ability to record statistics is needed.

philosophy on raids?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Amiron.1067

Amiron.1067

I think this is the issue at hand:

Some of us want raids or more challenging content, but we don’t want the rewards for this challenging content to be stronger gear than most people can obtain. It’s fairly obvious that item skins are hardly enough incentive to get people motivated to do the content as well.

So, with that said, what sort of reward for this challenging content are we looking for IF said content was placed within the game?

Is AoE actually a problem? - Discussion Thread

You know, when World of Warcraft went from Wrath of the Lich King to Cataclysm, they did pretty much the same thing we’re talking about; nerf the hell out of AoE’s. It turned out being not so bad. We actually had to use skill in dungeons and figure out which mobs to focus down first.

However, this game is NOT WoW, and I honestly think that killing AoE would really ruin a lot of appeal that this game has. I don’t want WoW, I want to keep GW2.

EDIT: Also, let me add; are you serious? Adding a friendly fire effect to AoE? That’s about the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard suggested in a MMO that attempts to bring the community together.

Not to mention you’d have that one giant jerkwad who would AoE you just because he felt like it. I repeat, friendly fire on AoE’s is beyond stupid.

I haven’t read this thread’s comments, so I don’t know if this has been mentioned, but I would expect that a thread placed in this form would have significantly more pve’ers respond than pvp’ers. Yes pvp’ers read this forum, but those who exclusively or primarily pvp are probably less likely, imo, to read this forum than those who primarily pve.

It would be interesting to see what a similar poll placed in the WvW forum would have in terms of results. But I’m too lazy to do that. lol

So you speak for all PvPers who exclusively or primarily pvp? I’m not trying to be a kitten in any way, shape, or form, mind you, I’m just curious as to how you’re getting your information is all :P

And this is the general forums, the supposed medium for all things GW2, not just PvE. So, inherently, its pretty unbiased if you ask me.

Lf> Warrior builds that aren't GS & A/S

Amiron.1067

Heh, I’m guilty of using greatsword, but it’s a very fun weapon to me and I’m pretty happy with it. However, I say NAY! to the axe/shield. Instead, I use longbow.

20/25/0/10/15 is my build.

Key traits: Forceful Greatsword, Slashing Power, Empowered/Inspiring Banners (depends on group/solo play), and the 15 in Discipline is for Fast Hands.

Play style in PvE:

Start off with greatsword, rush target, 100b, whirl, SWITCH to longbow, Fan of Fire at point blank range (if adrenaline isn’t full.), Combustive Shot, Arcing Arrow IN THE FIRE (Yay, area might buff!), use utilities (blind/root) as necessary, switch back to Greatsword, rinse and repeat.

The cool thing about this build is that it’s really fast paced and you also get to bring group buffs through area might, not only from Arcing Arrow, but if you wait to place down banners (using the Inspiring Banners trait, of course) in the Combustive Shot combo field (which is HUGE btw!), you can stack up to 9(!) stacks of might for everyone within a 600~ range of wherever you do your combo finisher blast.

Gear wise: Mix of Knights gear (with divinity runes), Berserker rings/necklace, and rampager (?) earrings (the one that give power/precision/condition damage). The idea is to have at least 500~ condition damage without buffs so when you rack up Might (and trust me, you rack up Might like a boss with Forceful Greatsword and combo finishers), you easily get over the 1200 condition damage softcap.

Of course, if you absolutely hate Greatsword, you’ll probably dislike this build, heh. It’s also able to be done with a sword/sword & longbow style build as well. You’re mostly glass cannon, but you murder things so fast that it doesn’t really matter. The best defense is an exceptional offense, I always say.

(And NO! That does not mean stand around and 100b in the middle of red circles, darn it! Utilize your dodges, don’t be tunnel visioned, and for DWAYNA’S SAKE, USE WHIRLING ATTACK TO EVADE!!!)

How to turn off Sig of Rage Fart Graphic?

See, the graphic never struck me as farts or dirt. I do a lot of roleplay on my warrior and I just say that, since he manipulates the element of fire, that it’s ash floating from him when he’s angry. And I don’t even have Signet of Rage equipped most the time because I don’t want my character to look like he’s angry 24/7.

[Build Conversation] Condition Damage PvP

Amiron.1067

However, good luck on pvp, since no one is going to be zoned by Longbow, and Sword/Sword is too easily negated by condition removal. Mostly because the sword throw probably won’t hit, and the riposte ability PROBABLY will never hit, although it will block 1 melee attack or any number of ranged attacks if Reflect is traited.

I figured it’d be a much harder build to pull off in sPvP, but you seem to think I said I was going to use sword OH? I’m planning to use Sword/Shield, not sword/sword.

[Build Conversation] Condition Damage PvP

Amiron.1067

So I’m thinking about trying out a sword/shield and longbow condition damage build with good toughness attatched and shout healing involved for WvW/pvp. The idea is to gear using Apothecary armor that delivers the three main stats I’ll need to stay efficient; Toughness, Healing Power (for shouts), and condition damage (for bleeds/burns). Obvious hard counters to this build would be condition removal builds, which would prove to be challenging to counter. Otherwise, I think the mobility of the sword/shield and the AoE damage and control of the Longbow would prove highly versatile in most situations.

The build I’m contemplating:

What is the point of glass cannon?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Amiron.1067

Amiron.1067

No Groovy, never. I TRY to stay positive, but every glass cannon I’ve encountered just immediately and constantly goes down, which is basically 4 manning the dungeon while carrying around a dead body. That’s just warriors, I don’t even want to get into the thief glass cannons I’ve encountered…

I think some professions can go glass cannon, like my thief and mesmer. They have abilities that allow them to negate damage fairly well, like black powder, stealth, blurred frenzy, etc. while still providing high end damage to the group without going downed every 5 seconds.

To play a “glass cannon” means you need to understand the game, know how to dodge, know how to use your class mechanics that help you escape trouble so that you can deal that massive damage while doing so.

But I do understand where you’re coming from. A lot of glass cannon built players I’ve come across just don’t fair well in a game where aggro is unpredictable and there is no healer to babysit their health bar.

Why do you need to say you’re a girl in every post?

Anyway, you’ve played 1500 hours? Uh… looks like you’re happy with the game as it stands. So why are you complaining?

Also, just wondering, why do you have “1500+ hours” in your signature? Is it a personal achievement?

I don’t see anything wrong with correcting her gender as to which she should be addressed by.

I’m at 1500 hours myself, played since BWE 1. Yes, I’m going to say I’m happy with a lot of the game. But just because I’ve played it for that long doesn’t mean I’m happy with everything in the game.

It isn’t complaining, it’s called feedback. People who want to see improvements in a company’s product they adore do this. Stop being ignorant.

To Fay; I agree with a lot of what you posted. The RNG is going a bit too far, and I agree that the guild system needs some more “oomph!” to it as well. Otherwise, I’m pretty darn happy about the game thus far.

Oh, and to add to it; I really, really, really hate diminishing returns on Karma and on loot obtainable. I don’t want to be punished for farming because I chose to spend 3 hours in Orr. (Sometimes all it takes is 1 good hour of farming before hitting diminishing returns, which is really disappointing.)

Please, if you disagree with the post, I applaude you, but can you take a few minutes and explain why?

Not to sound obnoxious, but I think it’s pretty obvious what it means to disagree with the article. By disagreeing with it, I believe the opposite of what it entails. I think level progression is fine, crafting is plenty organized and a fairly simple system with an interesting discovery mode, and I think the “lack of role definement” is what makes GW2 the game it is.

In short, I find that nearly all the issues they came up with are just them being too attached to older MMO’s and the unwillingness to adapt to something new like GW2.

Again, the only thing I agree with in the article is the story; it was weak and felt rushed, especially towards the end. I didn’t get the same appeal from it as I did back in GW1. For this reason alone, my level 80 warrior stands at 89% world completion and is still only on Personal Story level 24.

Hopefully this is more thorough. : )

Does homosexuality in Sylvari feel rather forced?

This is… getting a bit silly. Okay, so, here’s the facts derived from lore:

Sylvari DO have genitals, which is determined by either being male or female.

Sylvari do NOT have the ability to reproduce.

Sylvari DO feel the same sensations the other races would feel during intercourse.

Sylvari do NOT look at physical appearances for the purpose of attraction, but instead search for those who “inspire” them to claim as their “lover”.

Sylvari DO express themselves in very flowery wordings and phrases because of how they are naturally wired to be open about how they feel.

Hope that clears some things up for you all. Also, I’ll state again; what I just posted up above is derived from lore and therefore canon. I found this guide extremely useful when wanting to learn more about the sylvari race:

Wrongbow

Amiron.1067

I find that the longbow in conjunction with sword/sword (and gearing for condition damage) makes for a brutally powerful condition damage build. I think this game is built upon the idea of switching weapons frequently instead of sticking with one weapon an entire fight (greatsword is one of the few exceptions), and the fact that longbow is a support weapon should key into the factor that it’s not meant to deal massive damage (even though it does in conjunction with the adrenaline burst + #3 AoE Blast Finisher). A ranged blind, immobilize, and extremely viable AoE is what makes this weapon the perfect addition to a warrior who thinks he has it all with just one weapon set. Used your cooldowns up in longbow? Cool! Switch back to your other weapon and keep waylaying your way through the crowd. : )

I would be happy if they just made it so warriors could move while using skills how is a guy supposed to do melee dmg if he has to stand in place :[

You’re probably referring to GS Hundred Blades. It’s supposed to make you stand still; you do ridiculous damage, and to balance that power you’re immobilized.

If you want more mobility, play a sword/sword condition damage build where you can move a lot. But, in all honesty, GS has some of the best mobility of any of our weapons. It’s just one skill that isn’t mobile.

No i also mean the hammer 4 skill and the swords f1 skill and the rifle f1 i meant all skills not just GS

I can’t speak for hammer, since I hardly use it, but the sword adrenaline burst immobilizes your targets, so I don’t see the problem there. And the rifle adrenaline burst does high end damage at a far range, so the idea is to take advantage of the far range and use it from that distance.

Again, I don’t see the problems. It all balances out fairly well.

for better positioning of course e_e just because it immobilizes does not mean the next hit is not as important and just because its range does not mean that being able to move is less important in WvW

And this is where timing comes into place. You need to improvise; watch and observe, figure out when is the right time to use these powerful abilities. If everything was easy to use and had no disadvantages to using it at the wrong time, it would make combat very dull. You should feel a sense of accomplishment when you pull off an ability that keeps you in one place before that boss swings its fists again or before that projectile from a siege weapon in WvW hits you.

It’s all about skill, timing, and a hint of luck.

combat wont be dull if im able to move while i use my skills if anything i will enjoy it more since i wont be able to be kited as easily

You’re asking for it to be easier, and clearly if ANet wanted it to be easy they would of done it that way. So, instead of asking for more mobility (when we already have ridiculous amounts of it), try thinking outside the box with utilities that snare/root enemies and abilities that stun/knockdown. Also, look for traits that work around your flaws.

We excel in condition damage via burning and bleeding,

HA! Engi/thief/necro/ranger all crap on your condi “excelling”.

And I don’t care what anyone says; our Longbow absolutely demolishes the Ranger Longbow. Ask any ranger — they’ll tell you straight up how it is.

Funny, with the patch today buffing our longbow projectile speed by 30% I’ll keep my ranger longbow over your piddly “shotgun” style longbow any day. Our ranger longbow is basically comparable to the warrior rifle now, only with an aoe that covers an entire node and practically insta-casts if you petswap for quickness right beforehand.

The funny thing is, a “shotgun” style longbow actually fits a melee oriented profession. Go figure. And our longbow damage? Much higher than a Rangers. Your AoE? Can’t even match our adrenaline burst coupled with our #3 (which, not to mention, also is a combo field finisher that provides area might).

Not to mention a warrior built for condition damage via gear and traits has some of the highest bleeding/burning damage available in the game that classes like the thief/engi/ranger can’t even touch.

Edit: I’d like to add this;

“… they aren’t as good at it as the Ranger (with their pet).”

So, basically what our dev is saying is that, without your pet, you do less damage than us. Add into the factor that pet AI is completely horrid and they don’t live long when an elite turns their gaze upon them, you’re pretty boinked in dps.

Double Edit: And yes, our Longbow projectiles received a 30% increase in velocity as well, bud.

Greatsword is the everyman’s weapon; anyone can use it. Doesn’t mean everyone can use it effectively. If you venture 20 points into your first two trait trees, you can pick up traits focused around the GS. Also, slapping a sigil of strength on your GS and focusing on critical hits/critical damage can really up your damage. Whirling Blade is your strongest hitting attack when your enemy is up against a wall, and Hundred Blades is your spam whenever off cooldown.

Greatsword is probably our hardest hitting melee weapon, when spec’d and geared for it correctly.

We excel in condition damage via burning and bleeding, we deal the highest melee damage in the game, and we have some really supportive utilities and traits that allow us to further survivability. Sure, we’re not as beefy as the Guardian, and no, we can’t rip boons from enemies like a Mesmer can, but why do we need either of those things when we can already destroy metric (p)huck tons of enemies in mere seconds? We have the brute strength to literally tear through boons, and the condition damage to add on top of that.

I’m in complete agreement with most of everyone’s complaints here. Why do we have to hit twice with our skills to do the same damage, if not less, than another profession? The LOS is warranted. Failing to use a core part of our class because of a blind or block is not warranted. I would of been okay with this change is they turned our illusions into something similar to the Guardian spirit weapons which can be summoned like pets.

Mesmer used to be my main, but after these changes I simply can’t enjoy the profession because my main resource is pigeon holed.

You get plenty of utility with Headshot and Black Powder, and Unload spam is a ridiculously easy way to deal lots of single target damage from a safe 900 range.

The only problem I have with this thinking is that the former is inhibited by the latter. If you’re feeding your initiative into Unload to keep DPS stable then you don’t readily have the initiative pool available to use the great off-hand pistol utilities. Compare to S/P which does more DPS than Unload without spending any initiative, leaving the entire pool available for Headshot/BP at the cost of being in more dangerous melee range. If pistol auto attack ever does get a boost I think there will be more room for a condition+utility based build that uses pistol auto attacks to conserve initiative and takes full advantage of the 4/5 utility.

But the thing is, between Quick Recovery, Infiltrator’s Signet, Preparedness, Opportunist, and Kelptomaniac, I never run out of initiative. I always have enough up for at least one Headshot, and if I don’t, I have plenty of ways to replenish initiative fast enough so that I can get a Headshot off.

In short, why go for all utility or all damage when you can do both with some simple initiative management?

EDIT: For further understanding…
-Kelptomaniac = +3 initiative per Steal.
-Quick Recovery = +2 Initiative every 10 seconds.
-Preparedeness = +3 Maximum initiative.
-Opportunist = 20% chance to replenish 1 initiative on a critical strike. (procs all the time with Unload.)
-Infiltrator’s Signet = +1 Initiative per 10 seconds. (Stacks with Quick Recovery).

This is what I’ve been running, and I find it pretty good. I keep a sword as a secondary weapon (which makes it Sword/Pistol) and my unloads can crit all the way up into the 10k’s with full exotic berserker gear. It’s definitely a glass cannon build, but you certainly can dish out the damage.

I find P/P is a good combination. You get plenty of utility with Headshot and Black Powder, and Unload spam is a ridiculously easy way to deal lots of single target damage from a safe 900 range.

Anet hyped this game like crazy and simply didn’t deliver.

They deserve the complaints. Also, making posts telling others to stop making posts is futile.

This is mere opinion. I thought they completely lived up to their ‘hype’. I’ve no complaints about the game, and I think you’re entirely wrong.

Except the last part. People are allowed to voice their opinions; you’re definitely right on that part.

Look, folks, it’s apparent ANet understands that the way the events were run weren’t best. What I can insinuate from that article is that they won’t do it the same way again due to negative responses. What I truly love about ANet is the fact they’re willing to listen to the community and learn from mistakes. But let’s also give them some credit; Fractals are very fun (imo) and I’m glad they’re listening. It’s a lot better than D3 or WoW’s community, and I truly appreciate their constant strive to please their customers.

I’ve yet to experience rude players while doing Fractals. Sorry about your luck, mate, but not all of us are like that, and, like a lot of other people I know, we actually realize you are real person, not just pixels. I’ve had really fun groups in the Fractals and I REALLY enjoy the dungeons. They are unique, interesting, require skill, and provide a fun, random challenge. I got nothing but kind words to say to ANet for this patch.

I completely agree. Asura have the best animations in the game

I’m a completely glass cannon Dual Pistol/Sword and Pistol build, and I love it. Very simple rotation, tons of utility, and very fun overall. I have no complaints here

I’ll be quite honest with you; sword/pistol is an amazing combination. Not only does it provide great offense, but also good defense. You evade all attacks while using pistol whip and Black Powder is amazing for handling large groups. Not to mention you sword attacks already hit three targets max inherintely. I really, really like sword/pistol for leveling.

Regardless, staying in combat when you’re truly not is really annoying. Especially since your run speed is slower in combat than out of it, which makes exploring really difficult.

Here’s how I do it on my thief:

Assassin’s Signet: for power increase and higher damage when activated since I’m a glass cannon build.

Infiltrator’s Signet: Stun breaker and helps with initiative regen on top of Quick Recovery which is an additional 3 initiative every 10 seconds.

Last utility depends on the fight. I always switch this one out depending on the fight. If it’s a heavy hitting ranged mob, smoke screen. All around; shadow refuge. Need to help pull one mob from group? Scorpion Wire.

I always have one slot dedicated to helping out the team.

Signet of Agility – 4/10 Not necesarily all that important to have even more crit. you either spec for crit or you don’t, and normally your gear already provides you so much crit you dont know what to do with it.

You don’t take SoA for the precision bonus. It doesn’t hurt, but you don’t take it for that.

Regardless, even its activation effect isn’t that great. Nothing my Hide in Shadows can’t already do, give or take a little.

Assassin’s Signet – 9/10 Fantastic damage increase and passive power increase.

Infiltrator’s Signet – 8/10 Increased initiative regen is good for long fights, but nothing else.

Signet of Agility – 4/10 Not necesarily all that important to have even more crit. you either spec for crit or you don’t, and normally your gear already provides you so much crit you dont know what to do with it.

Signet of Shadows – 9/10 The speed bonus has helped me escape less-than-preferable situations/catch slipper foes on numerous occasions and helped the leveling process so much. Not recommended for dungeons, however.

Spider Venom – 5/10 Good for builds that are based around venoms, but otherwise it’s not really that impressive. Way too long of a cooldown to make it worthwhile.

Skale Venom – 1/10 Not worthwhile.

Ice Drake Venom 1/10 Would be worthwhile if the duration wasn’t so short.

Devourer Venom 8/10 Great for builds that are based around venom. It really can help with locking down an opponent.

Tripwire – 3/10 Can be useful, but I hardly use it. There are better abilities.

Needle Trap – 3/10 Don’t normally find traps all too exciting and or good.

Shadow Trap – 4/10 Same as last.

Ambush – 5/10 Pet AI in this game sucks. Sometimes they’re useful, but most the time they’re as dumb as a bag of potatoes.

Roll for Initiative – 7/10 Would be higher if the cooldown wasn’t so ridiculously long.

Blinding Powder – 6/10 It’s alright. Nothing my pistol offhand can’t do already, however.

Shadowstep – 9/10 Double whammy; two stun breaks in one ability. I love it.

Scorpion Wire – 5/10 Meh. Good for pulling mobs in PvE. Won’t see much use elsewhere however.

Shadow Refuge – 10/10 Dark combo field, ridiculously long stealth, healing. Need I say more?

Caltrops – 5/10 Only has specific uses.

Haste – 7/10 Would be higher if it didn’t drain all endurance.

Smoke Screen – 9/10 Fantastic to help mitigate ranged opponents. Cooldown is a little long though.

With the right build, P/P is fantastic single target DPS. Although, I agree, it could use some love. Here is a guide I wrote up for it:

http://veil.enjin.com/forum/m/6641013/viewthread/4909366-king-thieves-thief-dual-pistol-build/post/last#last

EDIT: Also, I’d like to add that Headshot is incredibly useful. Do you know how many allies I’ve saved from being finished in sPvP? Or how many people I’ve stopped from healing? It’s one of the very few stuns in the game that doesn’t have a cooldown and is RANGED and INSTANT. I find it amazingly OP in my opinion.

Thoughts on Ascended Gear? [Merged threads]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Amiron.1067

I don’t quite understand why people are getting upset over the mention of Ascended gear. It’s a fraction better than exotics, and it gives you a decent upgrade in end-game dungeons. You work for them to progress your character so that he/she can do the content even more easily.

This isn’t a grind. It’s called progression. Cosmetic rewards are wonderful and all, but it’s not bad to have something to work towards that affects you otherwise.

Also, remember that this content update in November is only introducing accessories/back equipment for Ascended. No armor, no weapons.
