Alright, some of you guys need to read the OP. A lot of you are bringing up points I’ve already addressed in it.
How do you know? Do you work for ANet?
I think you’re misunderstanding me here. I mean, it’s much more convenient for both parties in terms of initial setup and the actual duel to simply invite an interested person or persons to your guild hall and dueling there. Much more organized, fair, and etc. Not to mention, by doing it this way, you can even set up custom 2v2’s, 3v3’s, 4v4’s, etc. as well without having to hand over some gold/cash just to create a custom arena for 30 days.
Now, of course, whether you’re dead (defeated) or alive, waypoints cost money to teleport to and/or revive there. But here’s the thing. The fee is so small as to really just be a small annoyance for anyone, even starting players. And, of course, the fee is meant to be that small. But it just kind of brings up the question of why. Why does ANet have it there in the first place if it’s really not supposed to be a huge penalty at all?
If I had to guess, it may just be there to stop players from teleporting to every single place all the time. To get them to actually, you know, walk around and, in doing so, perhaps get them to participate in an event in the process.
Doesn’t mean I can duel in the open world.
Keep in mind, this isn’t as simple as WoW when it comes to PvP do to the massive variety of build options. While at first, a simple fast way to initiate a duel in PvE seems optimal, remember that it’s just not that simple in GW2. So, inviting others to your Guild Hall to set up everything and duel is actually probably the best option. Also provides an interruption-free zone and etc.
Anet made a lot of promises that they have not come to make happen yet. needless to say there are some of us players who hope Anet never put,s this kitten dueling junk in the game . and Anet could loose a lot of people over this junk . this is not WOW this is GW2 . it is useless and takes away from the game. it is bad as a guild sending a out a invite to some one who does not want to be bothered with guilds even . much less other people . #justsaying
Right. Just like how there’s so much dueling requests in WoW and other MMO’s which have it flooding their chats. Oh wait, no there’s not. You know, WoW had teleportation to cities too. Should that be taken out of GW2 because WoW had it? How about longswords? WoW had them so we can’t have those either.
Guilds, in their guild halls will be able to build an arena for such activities, it seems they listened to those of us, me included who said dueling would be great if it was limited to select areas of the game. guild halls appear to be this venue, and im extremely happy they went with it. I also hope that it stays limited to these areas, or other areas that arent required.
Yes duel will be able to happen in guild hall with anyone that want to do it and other person to duel with does not have to be in guild. You can invite them. From news I see can set up PvP in anyway want. 1v1 1v1v1 2v1 1v1v1v1 10v10 well you see what I mean. Look like fun for making a duel or many duels and fights in guild hall. I think arena net even say you can customize the area where PvP happen.
That’s actually a great compromise. Awesome. Now I’m even more psyched for HoT. Thanks, everyone!
About 2 years ago, Colin said in a PAX interview that, a ways down the line, they would like to implement this. But that was 2 years ago. And the only thing we have right now is pretty much what we had back then. So has there been any word on this now? AFAIK, there hasn’t been.
BTW, I know a lot of people have some concerns about dueling. But at the end of the day, I think the fears are simply unfounded.
1. People have said that dueling would lead to constant harassment for duels and trolling.
Now let’s just get something straight here. If people want to troll, they’re gonna troll, and they don’t need dueling to do so. Furthermore, there are MANY easy ways around this issue. For one, ANet could have it to where you can only duel with your friends and guildmates. Or maybe even just make it to where you can set up a whitelist for everyone who can duel you. And/or have an option to block all duels and add a small icon in someone’s target readout that shows they’re not open to dueling.
2. People have also said the game’s not balanced for 1v1.
Honestly? I don’t personally care if it is or isn’t. Awesome PvP builds come and go every single day. I expect dueling strategies and builds to be no different. What was once the new hotness build today is most probably gonna be the old and busted build tomorrow. Also, it’s kind of hard to believe this considering sPvP is not THAT different from 1v1 at all.
3. And finally, people have said it goes against the spirit of GW2 which is co-op.
The spirit of GW2 though is the players. And if this game was really focused purely on co-op then why the heck do we even have WvW and sPvP? This argument really doesn’t make any sense. Heck, even if we applied this argument purely to PvE, it still doesn’t make any sense as it’s not going to stop others in the slightest from co-oping for bosses and events and what have you. And if anything else, it may even add some more life to areas that are devoid of players or at least mostly devoid. And perhaps even encourage more player interactivity besides just staring at each other for a second before moving on to whatever else they were doing.
-
So then, why do I want it so much? Because…
4. It gives more intractability with other players in PvE. If you see someone even halfway interesting looking in PvE, the most you can do is talk with them. Maybe form a group or something. But that’s about it. If you’re not doing co-op with them, the person might as well not even be there. And that’s lame. We should be able to do more with each other. I mean, at the end of the day, this IS an MMO. And one which focuses heavily on PvP too.
5. It gives more point to the endgame loot you can earn. The more endgame loot you have should equal greater build options and variety and strategy you can implement just like in normal PvP.
6. It allows one to quickly test oneself against another. It also allows for practice and is also a great way to pass the time with friends.
So please, please, please ANet. let’s put this in. Sometime. I know you’re busy with HoT at the moment but when you’re done, please at least consider putting this in next.
OP is just complaining about the elementalist class, or is also new to MMO’s in general.
I recall 50 skill slots being used simultaneously in the last MMO I played.
OK… To all who keep spouting off this stupid “I’ve just played an MMO with 30+ keys, newb.” nonsense:
Do those MMO’s also require you to move around ALL THE TIME and DODGE? Because anyone can just stand there and click on hotbar buttons all day. The reason I love and hate GW2 is that it is far from that. That’s the core of what makes GW2 frustrating for me. Not because I have all these abilities and attunements and etc, but because you ALWAYS need a hand on the WASD keys WHILE having all that stuff. You cannot stand there. Well… I guess you could but you’re gonna take it hard.
I really really really want to like this game. Heck, I loved a lot of the first one. (Although GW and GW2 play pretty differently to be fair.) And especially now that that expansion pack with those features we’ve all been waiting for is coming out. But GW2 is really not making this easy. Now, could I have selected a wrong class to begin with? Most likely. But 1. I’ve played an Ele before in GW so I thought I would have a somewhat easy time with this and 2. To put it quite stubbornly, I picked an Ele because that’s what I wanna be and play. Not a warrior or anything else. At least not right now.
Anyway though, I really want to thank everyone who gave me some advice and tips on how to control my character. Know I’ve read every word of that advice and do plan to suck it up and go at it again. Thank you.
Crazy amount of keys? you have like 10 abilities on your hotbar. As an elementalist you will have 10 + another 15. But you know what? who says that you have to constantly swap between fire, water, air and earth all the time? If you are doing it to maximize your effectiveness then i would think that you know what you are doing and are a new player to the game, but not to the genre. I have a dagger/dagger Elem and i just run around in air all the time and if i run into a group taking on a Champ i will switch to water if i think they need a tiny bit of help with healing.
You need to not get confused by all 20 of the abilities that you have. Instead ask yourself what kind of situations will you find yourself needing to switch to fire? what kind of situation will you need to switch to water? what situation for air? what situation for earth? I’m only up to level 40 on mine but while i am running around solo questing i stay in air full time. And as mentioned earlier i switch to water if a group i come upon needs healing/cleansing (though i dont always change). There isnt a situation where i will have to switch to fire or earth. I would probably do more damage as a fire D/D but i dpsing as air D/D. I might get a little more protection as earth D/D but if i’m constantly in situations where the protection from earth will make or break a fight then maybe i need to rethink my rotation, playstyle, or gear.
You know what? I don’t know. I’ve played a whole bunch of games over the years and now whenever I’m beginning one, I like to know and at least be competent in ALL aspects before I do anything. I guess I do this due to really fast-paced games drilling it into me to be quick and in full control or be dead.
So when I’m starting out GW2, well now I feel I gotta master the skills, the utility skills, the weapons, the conditions, the dodging, the movement, the healing, how GW2 monsters behave, my attunements and how they differ and can be used, and how I can combine these sets together, and etc. etc. or else I feel I’m just gonna start dying all the time and be worthless.
The combat and movement is the best thing about this game.
How would you propose to improve it?
It is and it isn’t. It has a massive amount of potential. Unfortunately, the controls aren’t streamlined at all. Let’s take a look at a typical FPS’s controls, another genre where you have to leverage your abilities and destructive power with ammo/movement/quick thinking/etc.
I’m just going to go with Half Life 2 here. Luckily I have it handy on my PC. Now looking through the controls, you have a total of (including mouse controls) 11-12 keys to keep track of and need to be able to press at a moments notice in combat when you need to. Pretty standard stuff.
Now lets look at GW2 playing as an Elementalist. (My current starting profession.) Counting them up all up, you have about 22 keys for combat that you need to be able to press at any time in order to be competent. (and that’s being nice and not including the four different dodge directions.) That’s twice the amount that you need for HL2. And since I don’t have any sort of gaming mouse either… Yeah, see what I’m trying to say?
I might also add that it is NOT the active combat that i have a problem with. It’s how it’s been implemented.

One that the expansion doesn’t address. And it’s a problem with the very core of the game. Perhaps you guys know what it is? It’s not the balancing. It’s not then enemies. Not the lore or the players or the items or anything like that…
It’s the combat controls.
Or more specifically, how utterly clunky and unfriendly to new players they are. Especially if you’re playing an Elementalist where you have 4 sets of powers you can use at any one time. I’m sorry but it seems every time I think about GW2 and how I want to come back to it, I keep thinking back to the terrible combat controls. How I have to keep track of a crazy amount of keys all while CONSTANTLY moving and dodging, UT style.
I mean, are any of your guys noticing this too? I feel like everyone’s just having a party and I’m one of the few who can’t enjoy anything there because I keep bumping and crashing into things due to incredibly terrible and cramped room layout. This is really getting quite silly.
Sounds good. Looks like I’ll be vendoring most of my crap while I’m just starting out.
Just starting here like everyone else. Just wondering when you should sell an item on the Trading Post or just give it over to a vendor for quick cash.
Well there is the players helping players forum, GW2 Wiki, Dulfy, The Official guide you can purchase, and pretty much anywhere ^^
The PHP forum is for specific questions. I have a lot of questions.
The GW2 Wiki is for finding everything about a specific subject but using it as a tutorial is very clunky.
Dulfy is like the GW2 Wiki except less in it and less organized.
I don’t want to pay money for an official strategy guide if I can help it.
Doesn’t anyone know of anything that fits what I need?
First of all, you didn’t have to do it in a certain amount of time. The story path you chose, you get reamed, because being reamed is part of the story. If you made different choices during character creation, you’d have a different response from your superior. So yeah, there’s no way on your personal story path to not get reamed. It’s fine. Carry on, soldier.
You’ll get the hang if it. It’s not that hard. And while it’s different than any other MMO out there, if you just play it for a while, you will get the hang of it.
I’m sure others will be around with links to some nifty new player stuff that I can never find in a minute. lol
Edit: Ninja’d x 2 lol
Ah, OK. Thanks everyone for clearing that up.
I need a good, proper tutorial for this game.
Last night I just started a Charr character. Went though the prologue and got to the starting area. I get my orders. OK. So, I wander around for a little bit, getting used to the combat system and exploring the area I was in.
About 30-45 min. later, I get some mail.
‘Where were you? Our troops got destroyed! Report back to the Black Citadel to get your * reamed.’
lolwat? How was I supposed to know story missions needed to be initiated in a certain amount of time? Nice one GW2. Thanks for letting me know. >_>
But it’s actually kind of awesome too because it actually seems more like a WORLD and less like WoW where ‘Oh, just go here whenever you’re ready.’ kind of quests. So I love it and hate it.
Anyway though. Point is, GW2 wants to play hard-to-get. But you know what, GW2? Challenge Accepted. You won’t deter me that easily. So does anyone know where I can find a good tutorial for this game online?
I figured I was in the right section.. It says players helping players.. Lol
With questions, yes. For future reference, the Guild Wars 2 Discussion forum would be what you want for these kinds of topics.
The core of any MMO is the players. When people ask if this game is still being played a lot, that’s actually a good question. If an MMO doesn’t have very many players at all then it turns into a single player game. And since any MMO worth anything is meant to be played with others, it’s gonna lose around 70% of what makes the game fun.
You know, I can’t believe this game wouldn’t be doing well. You check the NA world population counts and it’s right there. Either Very High or Full. Yeah, this game’s definitely dying…
This isn’t really the right forum for this topic.
What I’m try to figure out as a n00b right now is how can I access all 8 of my skills in a timely manner on my keyboard while still maintaining effective evasion? Even further, how can I squeeze in the bind to switch between weapon sets after mapping out 8 keys in close proximity to my left hand?
No, character names are unique. When creating new characters you will be told if a name you type in is unavailable because it is already in use. If you delete a character and want to reuse the name on a new one you only have 24hrs to do so before the name goes back into general circulation. Also, if you choose to use a renaming contract to change the name of a character, you have 24hrs after doing so to revert back to the original name (will require a 2nd naming contract) before it too goes back into general circulation.
Thanks for clearing that up for me. While it’s too bad that I can’t choose any name, I also take a little pride in the fact that my name is MY NAME. :P
I looked at all the restrictions on naming a character in-game and nowhere does it say that the name must be unique. Which is rather weird but really awesome if that’s true. So my question is, is it? Do all character names have to be different in at least one little way or have they implemented a system to where anyone can make any name they want and use it?
I’ve got two questions so I’ll just roll them into one topic.
1. How do I check my latency in-game? I don’t see any icon anywhere or anything in the options.
2. Is there a command to kill your own character? For example, Guild Wars had the /resign or /giveup command but that doesn’t work in GW2.
Thanks for the well thought out replies, everyone. I am now enlightened. :\
Pros? There are no “pros” with subscription fees – only cons.
The thing is, there nothing that stops Anet from saying “hey if you buy 1000 or more gems in a month, you also get 500 gems for free the next month if you buy 1000 or more again that month!”. Voila. A “subscription” many people want to use without the give-us-your-credit-card-and-kitten kittentery of forced subscription games. Many people in GW2 already pay MORE a month than a subscription game, no doubt.
Is that really A.Net’s fault or problem? In fact, I think, as Beckett would say, that that’s just good business. There absolutely nothing forcing you to go buy some gems. You can still very much enjoy the full game without buying more than just the game. So, it’s really nobody’s problem but their own if they so desperately need to buy gems.
Pretty much, try LA.
Or if you are into WvW, EB.
Or if you are more into sPvP, try the Mist.
Nice. I’ll feel right at home then.
In the original game, if you went to the right cities, (LA, Old Ascalon) you’d find a lot of people posting recruiting messages and PMing any they deemed worthy to join. Is it mostly the same in GW2 or has it all changed?
The advantage of no sub for GW2 for my family, is it doesn’t cost us $60 a month to play. (yes we have 4 players in the home).
We don’t play standard F2P MMOs, because of the game breaking restrictions most of those impose
So for us GW2 B2P is perfect with no downside.
Edit: Also you can buy GW2 as a gift, unlike sub based MMOs : Here is a gift ,oh and btw you have to pay $15 a month
Very true.
On the other hand, anyone know any cons at all. Possible risks?
What would you say are the advantages of having no sub fee and the disadvantages as well, especially in the context of GW2?
