I was working today with Kylia of the SOACGaming Podcast Mesmerized (the new All-Mesmer Podcast)
He was on Fort Aspenwood with his guild and I decided to take the Minions into battle. I couldn’t get my recorder to work for the first 4-5 times we fought, but I did manage to catch one epic minute of battle.
Lesson Number One: Always bring a buddy into WvWvW with you.
Lesson Number Two: Make sure that buddy is on your side first!

sittingonacouch.com or SOAC Gaming is proud to present Mesmerized, your all-Mesmer podcast. I am pumped and excited to meet our new hosts. We are excited to help out the Mesmer Community in the same vein as we have started with the Necro Community.
Welcome to the first episode of Mesmerized, our Mesmer only (and this time a Necro) podcast! This week we bring you, Bas, our well known and loved Necro podcaster from the all Necro Podcast: But of Corpse, and he finds out what it is about the Mesmer that our two hosts, Kylia Deprigen and Pyroatheist, really like, dislike, and love.
The guys talk about early leveling, favorite weapons, and skills. Why Mesmer’s are loved and hated, the variety of builds, and much more. So have a listen and meet your Mesmerized Podcasters!
http://sittingonacouch.com/the-gw2-mesmer-podcast-mesmerized-ep-1/
We should have it on the Youtube SOAC Gaming Channel by tomorrow.
If you have any questions or guests that you would like us to talk to please don’t hesitate to let us know.
The hosts, Kylia and Pyroathiest, were chosen based on two very ardorous reasons.
1. They both keep a regular presence on the forums and are friendly, intelligent players who can talk a lot.
2. They were the only two who showed up for the rundown to find out who wanted to be a part of it. Haha!
Okay Don’t worry your favorite mesmer’s will still be part of the podcast.
You will be able to get all the mesmer podcasts along with all the Necro ones with the same iTunes subscription. Our YouTube channel though has changed to SOACGaming. Where you will see various tutorials, guides, gameplay of the podcast guests, Dungeon guides and other various things we are planning in the future.
SOAC Gaming wants to make it a home for mesmer players who are looking for a place to enjoy and watch entertaining and informational videos. I will be working with Fay on some written contributions as well.
But of Corpse is live Every Thursday at 5:00PM PST/GMT-8 on the soacgaming twitch channel.
Here is the VoD from this week’s BoC:
June 18, 2013 – In this episode of But of Corpse, The minion runner himself Bhawb gets to talk minion tournament play with High Warlord Sikari. They talk death shroud healing, necro support mechanics, and the future of Necromancers. You can check out the High Warlord build on intothemists.com

Hello, I just want you to know that I invented this Technique, which I have also titled “Spectral Bungee Cord”. Please refer to me whenever you want to make mention of it.
Haha inventing and discovering aren’t quite the same thing :P. I didn’t know you wrote the code that allowed us to do it.
However I will take your word that you discovered it.
I mostly take keeps towers ect, i go with a zerg most of the time.
Take epidemic, but keep wells on the side. You will want to swap all the time. There is a bigger push for wells now because of the recent changes to epidemic, but epidemic is still one of our strongest utilities in a group setting.
However if you are fighting keeps and towers, ground targeting wells wins every time because of epidemic los issues.
Minions work very well as damage dealers and cannon fodder. That is the standard MM spec for axe/focus, so you should do fine. Do not worry about trying to keep your minions alive with healing. Either they take very little damage, or they get one shot by massive aoe. Although MM works better in spvp, it still works in dungeons. If you run 20/0/30/20/0 and pick up the Death Nova trait, you get a poison combo field which you can blast finish for aoe weakness. IMO weakness is very important for minimizing damage taken in dungeons. I believe knights gear works best with axe/focus + minions.
This is spot on though I prefer running 30/0/20/20/0 for more axe damage. However, 20/0/30/20/0 is really nice for group poison fields and if you want to run the melee guys. The problem with death nova is if you run Bone Minions, Bone Fiend, and Flesh Wurm is that occasionally they will die away from a fight and so you have a wasted poison field.
axe is good if you swap often.
This even as a minionmancer, I swap between staff and Axe/focus in pvp regularly. Axe is a fantastic mid range mixture of support and damage. If you are teamed up with a burst theif/warrior/mesmer, than the 20 stacks of vuln I can put up in seconds rocks, but in terms of pure damage it’s below dagger.
For pve axe is my favorite because I don’t have to spend points traiting Marks and I don’t have to be close enough to dagger someone. If I want to max damage I run Tak and kitteno’s Zerker Axe build. 10-14k Axe 2 is pretty awesome.
Ok so here’s the thing, I LOVE the necro class in every aspect of the game, PvE, PvP, and WvW. My issue is I don’t really know what it is I should be looking for in builds when it comes to sPvP.
I need a support/well build and a soloing build I can switch between for tourneys and hotjoins, but like I just mentioned I have no idea what it is I need to focus on for either build in PvP.
(I’d also be interested in a home point guard, like semi bunker and 1v2 focused, but i don’t even know if necro can pull that kind of build off).
So any tips or ideas from the Necro community would be greatly appreciated, I would just like to avoid minion builds is all. I played Death Knight in WoW for a long time and without the pet control I had with Unholy DK’s I just don’t feel… adequate :P (don’t get me wrong, I hate everything about today’s WoW, it’s just that old habits die hard lol).
So thank you to anyone who read this and to anyone who offers me any constructive information
@Vicarious – Check out our podcasts they will all be up on our youtube channel SOACGaming by Monday, but for now sittingonacouch.com/category/gaming I would particularly encourage you to listen to episodes 2 and 7 where we talk with the top Necromancer Tournament players Symbolic on the EU side and Khalifa on the NA side.
The biggest part of tournament play is getting a team that fits what you want to do, and learning positioning. If you are solo queueing than Minions or Conditions are all I would recommend and even minions can end up being poor without a team.
I run Minion Zerker as the bunker crusher. However, my team was built around the fact that my minions were going to die, and I needed to be able to get away when they did. If you are going to bunker, than you are going to need a team to learn how you play to bunker effectively.
Berzerker and Power/Tough/Prec or Power Vit/Crit damage are all better choices unless you plan on tanking.
wow, got to start checking this more often
You can build a very reliable PVT build that is extremely tankish and relies on well of blood to reheal your team. We have DS to act as a sort of invuln, and we can actually sit on 30k health with 3k armor and a 2800 power for WvWvW.
In pvp, it’s best to leave the bunkering to those with a better assortment of boons, and work on helping your team be stronger.
Ok. So it seems my confusion is associated with a poorly worded tool tip. “Reflect incoming damage back to its source” implies exactly that. It will “bounce” off me back to the attacker. “Reflect a portion of incoming damage…” would be a somewhat better description, but still not accurate. The formula ignores the specific damage of the skill, and reflects a fixed amount regardless of the damage taken. In fact, the skill doesn’t actually reflect anything (in my opinion “reflect” implies a damage reduction). It simply adds a passive attack.
yeah the tooltip is poorly worded, did the warrior take any damage at all from attacking you?
In a second test, yes, the warrior did take a small amount of damage. In my initial test, I was expecting full reflection, so I was anticipating large movements in the health bar.
It used to work closer to that method where it would scale based on damage originally, but it was so powerful, that there were some guardians builds that only focused on keeping up retaliation, and you would kill yourself on them.
Just a tip, only use the Bone Minions for their Boom Boom otherwise they are the worst of them.
The point was that all melee minions suffer from the bug, bone minions and jagged horrors need love too.
I agree the ranged ones work incredibly well, but those melee are either too squishy or have targeting issues.
Just a tip, only use the Bone Minions for their Boom Boom otherwise they are the worst of them.
I like written guides to suplement my video guides so I can have a quick reference when I’m switching builds around or need to crunch numbers. If there’s a way to add some written guides to your site, I would probably leave them open during my play sessions.
It is something we are working on. Written guides require a bit more work, but it’s something I have looked into. What we may do is link to players guides during the tutorials so you can go to them.
The website is setup as just a column or podcast site, and not really a guide or gaming website. We are looking at various ways to make changes to better assist a large portion of our visitors.
I tend to roam a lot and do 1v1’s and I notice that my Golem stops attacking in the middle of the fight and does nothing for almost a good 5-10 seconds, it doesn’t only do this against thieves but other professions as well. In PvE Flesh Golem AI seems to be ok and attacking whatever I’m attacking so ya…
I am not sure that portion will ever be fixed it’s the way Anet does the Pet AI. Anything with the ability to drop target can screw with the mechanics of pet AI. The easiest way to get it back on track is to hit auto attack twice or use your charge. He will then begin attacking a majority of the time.
However if you are using staff or scepter with a lot of aoe abilities it has the potential to increase the delay in Flesh Golem attacking.
I eventually went with adding loads of defence, and just trying to out-health things. Damage in close range was my first attempt and it was abysmal, and minions are good farming but the moment something remotely difficult happens… nope. :/
If you don’t take the 20 in Death Magic minions are virtually worthless. If they die resummon them. 20 in spite is meh, if you have condition gear than 20 in curses is the way to go because there aer so many nice things there.
Personally 20 in Blood Magic or Death magic are the best ways to invest when leveling.
This sounds like an amazing idea. Is it possible for me to get an invite to this guild?
I have no doubt someone will send one shortly. The Necro community for the most part is incredible at invites and answering pm’s.
What about recording everyone’s voices through mumble like usual, while recording the video only (or even video+game sound) via xfire, then you can overlay the sound recording later.
I most likely will go that route, but was hoping there was an easier alternative since it means I have to do twice the work :P.
At lvl 40 20 points in death magic is probably best if you just doing open world pve, and then going from there.
The problem with any tutorial is that there isn’t a set way for the Necro to level, you can level as dagger/wells, conditions, or MM. MM is probably the easiest as you would take the least amount of damage, but dagger wells is incredibly powerful and allows you to fully utilize warhorn.
Must be just my luck then to be facing a fair amount of engis running that trait then. It is fairly demoralizing to see them nearly dead, yourself on 50%, but end up running away or dying because your damage is reduced to 500 every 10 seconds for what seems to be an eternity.
Meowing kitten cat.
Who makes such traits………………
Save death shroud until they hit 25 percent as well pop into it and hammer them also use staff at that point, it’s amazing how much damage it does.
Activating spectral walk jumping off a cliff and bungeeing up to it while your teammates fall to their death is still one of the funniest things to do :P.
I am not an expert in Condi builds, but I would think that Rennoko and a few others will chime in once I get this wrong ;P.
First of all, What works in WvWvW and what works in PVE are not always the same thing. In wvwvw, it really depends on what type of group you are running with havoc squad or zerg that will decide what utilities you will work with.
My recommendation is check out Nemesis’ Terror build or the Facemelter build from Lettuce. The downside of a straight condition build in dungeons is if you are a pug and run into a condition ranger or condition ele, they can build condition damage faster than you so you won’t be as strong as say a Hybrid which Bhwab, Rennoko, Talentless , and a few other really bright guys run.
Heya Bas,
I’ve been tryin to catch you online. Been wanting to run an all necro fractal run. I’m on level 6 currently because fractals aren’t really my thing until recently where I decided to give it a try. I also want to give minions a try and want to see them in-game.
I apologize, I was on vacation last week, and this week has been catching up on everything I left alone until I got back from vacation. I will be on tonight, because I will need about 4 and a half hours of recording to finish up. Tak and I are going to do about an hours worth of dungeons with andele tonight to get some recording for his version of the podcast.
I haven’t done a fractal past lvl 6 I believe either. The guild I was in was a hardcore fractal farming guild, and I just couldn’t keep up. I will try to catch you tonight. I want to record an all minion run.
Currently I am recording with xfire if anyone knows how to get it to record my voice as well as everyone else’s that would be great. I can only seem to get it to record Gameplay and other players with me or just my voice.
Let me know how I can help. Would love to help my fellow necros get better, specially in wvw. We DON’T suck there! ^^
I pm’d you, and we should get together with some other wvwvw guys and do a Necro tutorial on how to effectively play once I am done fixing the podcast visuals.
I don’t think it would be as bad in WvW if the Line of Sight with tower/keep walls wasn’t so wonky (the whole “if your feet and your target’s feet can’t see each other, you don’t have LoS” thing). Really that issue is bigger concern for WvW.
I’ll still run Epidemic, because the opportunities to use it are still high, but with the whole dodging/blocking/invulnerable thing now ruining it too, they need to cut the cast time.
Necro Cast times in general are the most frustrating for me. While at first I enjoyed the visual part of it, now it’s just frustrating since it simply allows other to interrupt me regularly.
My guess is you run a staff build in dungeons? If you are going to work with staffs, I would figure you would want to go 20 in Spite to pick up increased damage on marks.
probably because it’s not a very good trait.
Have to agree, mark damage even when traited is meh, and that kitten projectile remains painfully slow. Staff is better utilized to apply conditions and c/c.
While that’s inherently true, half of his traits aren’t really beneficial to pve play which is what he was referring too. Might on LB would be a better choice.
hey what is you youtube channel‘s name?
I like thos idea and actially have several necro build I‘d like your opinion on.
Firstly you would have to prove that you know what you are talking about
Diva
Our current youtube channel is jopf2, but it’s going to be SOACGaming. However, there is nothing on SOACGaming because I am redoing the videos from jopf2. If you wish to hear the podcasts, check us out at sittingonacouch.com/category/gaming
The videos on jopf2 are my first attempts and are pretty bad. I am doing the recordings for the existing podcasts this weekend, and will get the previous podcasts as well as the newer ones up with the videos shortly. The problem we are having right now is figuring out how to get an entire hours worth of video over to myself without it taking all day.
You can think whatever you like, doesn’t matter to me.
Simply WvW has to many variables for me to consider it worthy of being worried about a single spec that can dominate.
Now if you are talking equal geared characters running then we have something. Feel free to show me a video of a class going 1vs3 with all the characters with equal gear and skill, then I’ll agree with you that we need a go to spec.
I think you gave me an idea. I am going to see if I can talk some of the top tournament guys into making a video of them actually trying out wvwvw.
Oh haven’t heard of that, I’ll bust out my mesmer and investigate! Got to find a minimum of 5 allies to pass through them though :P[/quote]
It’s the confusion skill on passing through trait that turns Glamour skills into walls. Kylia is the one who figured it out.
You are an average player with an opinion based on your limited ability.
actually your opinion is more based off Bawb’s opinion, now that I think about it you’re more like bawb’s mouthpiece.
Actually I can kill bhwab, and widely disagree with him about Hybrid builds, Death Shroud uses, and Minion Bunker builds.
Guess what else, I also disagree alot with CHIPS. In fact, CHIPS is one of my favorite posters, because unlike certain posters, when he posts a disagreement he paints a logical explanation as to why he disagrees. Yet I have healthy conversations with him all the time, and respect his opinion on the Necro.
The ability to disagree with someone without insulting them is a dying art I know, but you should try it sometime.
(edited by Bas.7406)
Not being great at something doesn’t mean I can’t have a firm grasp of where the class is currently
No, but it is still a very good indicator.
My mom is an average driver, she would never notice the differences in performance and handling between an ’82 RX7 and an ’82 civic. She may even say she thought the cars were very comparable.
Any good driver would notice HUGE differences in what you could do in those cars.
You are an average player with an opinion based on your limited ability.
No I am an average player with an opinion formed by conversations with extremely talented players.
Sometimes it’s better to learn from others :P. If you haven’t listened to a single minute of the podcast than you can’t really say what I know. I talk to the guys who know more than me, and learn from them, and then try to get them to share it with others. There is a reason why people want to hear from Talentless, Khalifa, Zombify, Nemesis, Chips and not you, they are very talented players who take the time to talk to someone positively, and think the class is extremely strong.
Than there is the guy driving the Porsche 911 and sees the guy driving a Civic, and can’t stand that the Civic has better gas mileage, cost less, and boy it sure is more comfortable on a long road trip. A good driver would say screw the civic I will take the porsche even if it does have a few things that arent’ perfect. (If you missed it you are the guy complaining that your porsche doesn’t have the Civic’s gas mileage or cost or comfort level).
Read the forums… and not the posts made by scrubs who complain rather than learn.
I believe Dred is referring to roaming builds, not zerg builds. We have great zerg builds, but necro roaming capability is lacking severely.
Show me a video of a necromancers taking people on 1v3 or 1v4 like mesmers, thieves, and elementalists currently can do.
Taking down 3 people in wvwvw is nothing to boast about. I will try to get the video symbolic showed me the other day of Team Paradigm trainwrecking a 20 plus man zerg with 5 guys.
Some of these videos the 5 guys they are killing are a joke. We don’t know what level they are. I saw a video of an ele killing 10 people, and everyone was raving that the ele was OP. Except if you watch the video you will notice half the guys playing have horrible weapons, and some of them can’t be higher than lvl 20 against a lvl 80 fully buffed and optimally geared elementalist with skill.
Sure ele’s got it good, but the ability to take down 5 people in WvWvW is not that difficult. Heck, most of these guys record hundreds of hours of tape and pull the ones where they train-wrecked an under leveled and under geared group. Sure the players exhibit very good skill, but show me that same player doing that in a tournament against a team, and then you got a legitimate gripe.
I understand that the way these ground-effect skills work is that they can’t affect more than 5 targets AT THE SAME TIME. So if 6 friendlies walk through it together only 5 will get it. I’m pretty sure hostile and friendly target caps are separate, though I’ve been unable to test this. So yeah, in theory if you drop this in front of your zerg you could give Protection to most of them.
This is probably the best definition of how the talent works. Though I have heard that there are Mesmer Glamour bubbles that can slam everyone through a specific trait that turns them from bubbles (limited to five) to walls (pass through skills) which means they can now affect an entire zerg.
@kravik, Take a second to calm down. Reread my first comment. I never once stated our signets were even a value. I was simply mentioning that tournament warriors (there really aren’t a whole lot) never carry them, because there are better things to carry. I can’t think of a warrior who doesn’t carry bull rush in tournaments (I hate that ability). Signet of Rage is an elite and so doesn’t even count in this conversation.
Now having said that I was speaking strictly of pvp players. In pve, I don’t see why you can’t run two signets. I think almost every warrior prefers signet of rage for an elite because the Juggernaught is so bad, and the banner is situational at best.
As for Necro signets, my dislike for them is well-known. I have actually tried to find a way to use them even taking reduced CD and the ability to gain 3 stacks of might with them, and spent a few hours trying to get them to work. The only good one is signet of undeath and even that is meh outside of the active.
@dredlord – I have never stated I was a great player. In fact, I am pretty sure I have said never claimed to be more than slightly above average player. I simply have the ability to step back from something I care about long enough to see that it’s not all horrible, and that the grass is not always greener.
I fought the best wvwvw Glamour mesmer the other day (an incredibly talented player). We dueled 10 times. I lost 7 of the 10. We had a great time. Out of the ten fights 3 weren’t even close – I crushed him once, and he crushed me twice. Every other fight went down to the wire and two out of my three wins were with both of us down and my minions killing him off.
I have fought a few incredible necromancers – Zombify who trainwrecked me once and the second time I did a bit better. He very kindly said, “You aren’t bad, and you learn which is good. You just need practice.” I even have hilarious videos of me underestimating the talent of the team I am facing that I will freely share with you.
Not being great at something doesn’t mean I can’t have a firm grasp of where the class is currently
Yeah, you’re right. Warrior utilities (especially signets) are actually useful and have half the cooldown of necromancer utilities.
Fun fact: on average Necromancer utilities have 4.5s less CD than Warrior utilities.
Fun Fact: on average Necromancer utilities have double (100% longer) the cast times as Warrior utilities.
Fun Fact: on average Necromancer utility signets have 57.5s longer cooldowns than warrior.
Anyone ever wonder what class dreadlord actually plays? I think he only comes on here out of his undying love for bhawb and myself.
As for the Signet conversations, we were talking about signet builds because someone mentioned that Warriors signets are amazing. Which made me laugh because they have one really good signet, but the really good ones in pvp never carry a signet unless they are going for might stacking, and even then there are better ways.
I laughed about all-signet builds being bad, and that’s what got us here.
Does Spectral Wall apply vulnerability more than 5 times? I know it applies Protection only 5 times and then stops giving it to any new person who passes through it.
That is incorrect. It applies protection and vulnerability to everyone who crosses through it there is no limit unless it was a stealth nerf in the last patch.
Anyone who has experience with adding video to audio. Creating high quality video or a graphic artist type of background would be greatly appreciated me as I can pick things up quickly if I have a bit of guiding hand.
@PinCushion
Anyone who cares about winning matches should just transfer to JQ, there all matches won and you don’t even need to be online.
I’m more inclined to go with WarMourner, WvW is about pitting my build, which I built with my time and grind and fine-tuned, against others and see who came out on top.
That’s the kind of feeling that I can’t get in sPvP, bags and loot is a very nice incentive as well.
Except a majority of the time the guys you are coming out on top of are not the same level nor are they near your level of gear. So you are crushing undergeared people under your foot. Not that I consider that a bad thing just pointing out that in tournament play it comes down to teamwork and how well your build works with your team.
My guess is you run a staff build in dungeons? If you are going to work with staffs, I would figure you would want to go 20 in Spite to pick up increased damage on marks.
it only worked on conditions added after you were already at 25%.. so conditions added at 26% would still be ticking away.
it was a lousy skill since kit refinement was on a 10 second cooldown, and by switching to elixirgun you auto-casted super elixir and still had your normal super elixir on a 20 second cooldown.
I never really paid much attention, but I’m pretty sure, super elixir removed all conditions on impact.
So who needed Automated Response, when you had a condition wipe on a 10 second cooldown?
..and now engineers are so bad, I wouldn’t worry about them.
Watch out for confusion… that’s about all they have.
I am really glad you are on the Necro forums now. It always bothers me when someone comments as to how strong Engineers are now, when I saw the changes and went ouch. In fact most Engineers hate that trait and rarely take it, because of the point you made.
In fact, I think you have disputed several claims already on the forums about Engineer and other classes abilities that are widely known in their community as bad traits.
@Panhauramix – Having a single great build and a bunch of bad builds is not conducive to good balance. One great build and a bunch of bad builds is a broken class. Having a bunch of good builds but no great builds is a balanced class and is where the necromancer currently resides. There isn’t a single good Engineer who wouldn’t trade places with us in terms of build variety in a heartbeat.
As for wvwvw, Talentless has several videos of him killing 3 to 5 people without even breaking a sweat. On our recent podcast, Khalifa laughed at all the WvWvW videos claiming how great they are in pvp for killing 5 people when the likelihood of those 5 people being geared and at the same level of you is pretty rare.
My point is taking a video of you killing 5 people in WvWvW is not really that impressive since I have done 1 v 3 and 1v4 before with a minion mancer. It really depends on the level of the players you are facing.
Don’t focus all on skills. There’s lackluster traits too, like Siphoned Power or Reaper’s Precision.
Siphoned power isn’t useless it’s just meh compared to other abilities around that level. If you thought about it more as adding power and condition damage as your health got lower it would be a little better. Nah, it’s still pretty meh.
Reaper’s precision is pretty nice for minion builds or for builds that need to build ds a bit faster. The problem isn’t the trait it’s that there are 3 traits in that same line that are better (Terror, Chilling Darkness, Weakening Shroud).
You can’t even begin to compare Warrior and Necromancer utility skills, they are completely different.
Yeah, you’re right. Warrior utilities (especially signets) are actually useful and have half the cooldown of necromancer utilities.
Haha, I love full signet warriors – useless in tournaments, and easy deaths in dungeons. 1 signet is fine, good warriors carry banners or shouts in dungeons with Frenzy for GS. Bad warrior like signets.
Nemesis needs to put this on his tutorials. I will try and catch him and request he add it to his sticky.
I was thinking of trying to convince some of the tournament guys I know whose teams aren’t active anymore of starting a new tournament team so I can record it for those who listen to the podcast or simply enjoy watching how players do tournaments.
Cough, Zomibfy, cough! If I could get ahold of some of them for more than 10 minutes at a time cough, zombify, cough! No hints here.
