Forums ate my post

The TLDR of this video is people are stupid and easily manipulated with marketing.

I’d be a component guy. Which explains why I mostly like GW2’s loot system. It’s primarily a component system with a very stingy drop (rng) system added on to spice things up.

Orrian Boxes nerfed

I did something around a million and a half to 2 milion karma recently, I ended up making 7g+ just off the vendor trash, got about 57 obsidians, at least one of every lodestone, and three mini balths. I know for sure I got 4 corrupted and two charged lodestones, b/c they were the reason I was doing it.

I also got a sore finger from all that clicking.

Basharic.1654

Gamers are so un-self aware sometimes. The problem with difficulty is what you thought was hard last week might not be hard this week. Do you remember how hard it was the first time you learned to ride a bike? How about how hard it was when the game launched?

For my part I remember playing a thief in Beta, and getting regularly clobbered by normal mobs in Snowden. Now I’m dancing with 5-6 undead, 2 of them vets, and not batting an eyelash. And I’m not even cheesing it with S/P.

No game is ever going to be able to produce difficulty faster than the human mind can adapt to it. What was hard yesterday is cake tomorrow. The thing gamers seem to always forget is there are ways THEY can contribute to the fun/difficulty they experience. Devs have a responsibility to keep changing things up, creating new content, and fixing boring or op professions.

But take some bloody responsibility for your own fun too. If you know doing things a certain way is going to be easy mode, don’t do it that way. There is literally nothing stopping you from:

Playing an underpowered profession or build.
Taking off pieces of your armor until content gets hard.
Aggroing more mobs (limit to this one)
Farming Arah instead of CoF p1
Killing champions/events with too few people/solo

The only content that will ever keep up with a players learning ability is PvP, because there it is human mind vs human mind.

My current personal favorite challenging activity in PvE is to retake the colonade in Malchor’s Leap solo. It’s even tough on my warrior, but it is balls out kitten my thief.

Uninstanced Salma, new walls.

I’m no role player but I’ll add my voice to the complaint about new invisible walls or restructuring terrain. My bud and I are unrepentant jumpers, we look for the best places to throw ourselves off constantly. One of our favorites, Mt. Maelstrom, recently had the terrain changed, forcing us to use a lower elevation as our launch point.

We now have to launch from the vista instead of the much higher point to the right of it. As far as we can tell this was done only to nerf fun. The change serves no other purpose we can see.

Edit: while we are discussing this, can we please have a route to the top of the priory’s mountain? The craters we could leave with that kind of elevation would be fantastic.

T6 Dust Crisis

Basharic.1654

Relax and be patient. The vast majority of people farming T6 are currently doing so in SS because of the settler buff. Where the mobs don’t drop dust. This is why blood and venom sac prices are down some.

As far as farming bags, instead of being a lamer and humping one spot, run the event chains in Orr. A top to bottom run for Mel usually generates 10-20 bags for me, depending on what MF I’m running and my party status. The Shadowfain-Jofast bus is also solid, a full Grenth attempt and subsequent re-attempts will net you a lot. And don’t forget poor old Megil, the maggots off her friend’s corpses can be very generous. I’ve gotten about 10 bags off of them by myself with no MF before.

Oh and sorry, I had a hand in driving prices up, I just bought about 180 dusts over the last couple of days to finish off my gift of magic.

If I’m right, the patch took that little ability out… I can’t get any conditions to apply to him at all… And with the mines not doing anything to him even when he’s on top of them when I trigger them, I’m left with a completely uncompletable “dungeon”

Well done Anet… well done.

RE: Gimicky mechanic that replaces regular skills

This is fine in a mini game, it’s fine for costume brawl. It’s not fine for real content. I’ve spent a lot of time mastering my thief. I really love my toolset as a thief.

I want to do new and exciting content that challenges me to use my skills to their maximum potential in interesting ways.

I do not want to be turned into “Generic gimmick X”. This is one of the reasons the Molten Facility beats the pants off of this encounter.

For story mode you didn’t even stick with the gimicky mechanic. No one is going to use the stupid mine gun the second they realize conditions will melt Canach.

Finally Understand who GW2 Demographic is!

Basharic.1654

I’m dinging 40 this year and I love this game.

I can understand why some folks aren’t thrilled with the SAB, personally I’d rather have another “in the game” dungeon updated, or a new one put in. But I also get the fun and the whimsy of this. It’s not what I would have wanted them to do, it feels out of left field to me, but it’s what they did.

It’s moot to me, as the S.A.B. – infantile gave me motion sickness. So I might load up on drugs and make a stab at getting the achieves done before the end of the month. But beyond that I count my blessings that none of the rewards appeal to me.

The commercial btw is unadulterated awesome.

To the OP I would point out Arenanet is out to make money, the people you are denigrating as casual are the ones paying the bills. As has been pointed out already Arenanet has always said this is a game you can pick up and put down as you wish. It’s the definition of casual. Which is good because people who take video games super srs are morons.

Buy the new stuff, choose the leather hoodie, buy aviators cap. Equip on Charr.

Bomber pilot Charr is awesome Charr. Don’t believe me? Go preview it. My buddy already has it. I’m waiting to see if anything I want goes on sale this month.

It’s nice enough. But to me it’s not worth spending the money for the 5 minutes a day that I spend in LA, IF I remember to toggle town clothes on, which I usually don’t.

For me that’s the real sticking point. The cost/benefit ratio is to far towards cost and not enough towards benefit. I badly wanted the Mad King costume and I would have bought it if this game had the Guild Wars 1 system. But I’m not going to spend money on something that I won’t use because its main use is in town only. I’m not in town enough to buy an item, that is an in town item only.

I can respect that. But your post makes me wonder, you do know that you can activate town clothes anywhere in the world right? You can literally live in them until you take damage, then the game puts you back into combat armor.

I use my mad king get up to pass the time waiting on my ever-late guild mates, pretty much any time I’m idle, in some JPs, and on long runs. I also like to costume brawl so I have that going for me.

I have any eye towards the new stuff for my second Charr, just to replace the hideous clothes they get.

As has been stated the usual examples of stupid MMO names falls into the category of helpful idiots self identifying. A person who has such a name may well not be an idiot, but they are wearing an idiot’s uniform and that is enough for me.

That being said, I could care less what other people name their toons.

I tend to think of my toons as individuals making their way through Tyria with me along for the ride. They get single names whenever I can give them. If I really want the first name and it is taken, I will add a last.

Basharic – my main and ever shall be. Male Charr thief. Name was actually generated by WoW’s name generator for my very first and most beloved toon.
Whree – my tiny female Asura warrior.

The rest are either non-English words, referencing race or profession, a couple more are from an anime so old only other ancient farts like me will get it.

In my opinion, Dailies are a shallow gameplay mechanic

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Basharic.1654

Basharic.1654

I’m sorry but anyone complaining about dailies is a blithering moron so bereft of intelligence and basic reasoning, as to cast doubts on their ability to breathe unaided.

You can complete dailies in the time it takes to do Plinx.

In fact doing the entire Plinx chain will complete most, if not all, of five dailies depending on what is listed.

Now please read the next line until it sinks in. Read it aloud if need be.

Dailies are not a goal or gameplay. They are a reward system for folks who don’t have a lot of playtime.

They are incidental to playing the game. It’s like putting a cash reward on recreation league sports. You were going to go play soccer with your friends anyway, but some crazy rich gal in the stands just gave everyone participating in the game $20 just for playing.

“But Bash ZOMG laurels! Ascended gear is necessary ELEVENTY”

If you need Ascended gear for fractals what did you do before Laurels bought Ascended gear? Hrm, it’s on the tip of my tongue but I can’t seem to remember. . .

Fractals were built and tuned for getting Ascended from . . . Fractals! That makes the Ascended gear on the laurel vendor redundant, it’s there for folks who have crappy rng luck, or don’t want to do Fractals.

And sorry if BIS gear might come from things you don’t want to do. Luckily you don’t need BIS gear to do anything in this game other than bleeding-edge fractals. Not having ascended gear isn’t going to affect the other dungeons, nor anything that matters in WvW, and it sure as hell isn’t going to affect open world PVE.

"Kill" stealing with dailies

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Basharic.1654

Basharic.1654

Not actual kill stealing per se, but things like someone stealing aggro from a mob when you are trying to get your dodges in, or stealing a player or npc that you are trying to heal for the daily. It’s getting ugly out there.

Dodging – It’s stupid easy to get without even thinking about it. Though being a guardian increases the difficulty.

Healer – You obviously don’t know about certain events that result in piles of NPC bodies because no one bothers with them. Think giant in Diessa.

As far the daily healer goes, I am blessed with a buddy that enjoys a good fall and splat, so we usually announce in LA that we are doing our darndest to hit the rock below the diving board. Then we have a fun little splat party until everyone who comes out has their daily done. The side game we play there is to see who can get deepest into the water while being dead from the fall by chipping off the rock.

We also like to throw ourselves off the top of the volcano in Mt. Maelstom. Though that isn’t for the daily. It’s for the lulz . . . and either to see who can get the furthest or who can bounce off the most stuff on the way down.

I’ve only rezzed NPCS since patch dunno if Healer is as bad off.

Except that we see again and again mobs that will stick like glue to a single toon for the duration of the fight, barely switching while said toon is running back from the waypoint. Never mind that Aragorn pretty much pulls a aggro grabbing taunt around the 40 seconds mark, something that is unavailable in GW2.

You need to watch it again.

Aaragon “took aggro” by standing between the troll and Frodo (who it was locked in on until the troll downed him). Aaragon also didn’t tank, and he certainly didn’t hold aggro, he got knock the kitten out.

What you don’t see is Gimli standing toe to toe with the troll, holding it in the center of the room, while one of the hobbits throws heals on him and Gandalf and Legolas plunk away at it unmolested.

No hard roles. Everyone shifts in and out of the traditional roles as the situation demands.

The best boss fights in game are like the cave troll fight in Lord of the Rings. Constant aggro swap, people being batted around and downed.

Couldn’t find a good video of the whole fight. This one starts midway

http://youtu.be/Vi5pdd7xHNI

Basically watch that fight scene over and over again until you get it.

Not saying all boss fights are perfect. Way too many are too static or gimmicky for my tastes. But it has nothing to do with lack of traditional roles.

I keep wanting to play WvW and sPvP, I have no real issues with those aspects of the game, but the PvE game has been keeping me busy. Mostly it’s just by the time I’m done doing what I want to do in PvE I don’t feel like I have enough time left to really get into the other aspects of the game.

This is pretty odd since I was an avid PvPer in other games. But I’m having tons of fun. so I ain’t complaining. Side bonus is I seem to be avoiding most of the “growing pains” WvW and sPvP are going through. It feels like once I do finally get to them I’ll be getting a much more polished experience.

I don't like Champions that One-hit kill you

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Don’t get hit. It really is that easy. Sometimes there is no escape route, and all you can do is be immune thanks to a dodge roll or some other ability. When you get downed in PVE it’s because you did something wrong. Some mobs are extremely dangerous to melee, and should be fought at range.

Have you played this particular event? If so, you are full of crap. Ulgoth the Modniir is a beast unless you have a large group. You will die fighting him at one point or another.

I’m getting tired of these canned responses in this forum: trolls posting ‘l2p’ over and over. The OP has a valid point. There a number of champions that can and will one-shot you without any warning. Of course, these bosses were designed to be fought with a large group. Whether or not they should be toned down is the issue, your assumptions about the OP’s skills/build are not the topic.

It’s the capstone battle to an epic zone-wide event chain, not the weekly meeting of the local garden club. The response sounds canned because there isn’t much to say to someone whining about being oneshot. The simple fact of the matter is that if you got killed from full HP in PVE you messed up. When it happens you should honor the mistake and learn from it. Not run to the forums to tell the world about the fresh injustice you have recently faced.

In terms of the game world Tyria is a dangerous place, there are things that can and will murder you with a quickness. This is what makes it exciting.

And I’m not saying this as though I’m some ubaleet player. I’m not. I get killed when I make mistakes, I even get frustrated. The difference is when I hit that frustration and go to the Internet it’s to find out what I did wrong and learn to get better.

As I recall I’ve fought that particular event twice. Both times downleveled on my thief. it’s been a while since I’ve been through. It was a fun fight and I am sure I even died a couple of times. I do recall also soloing/duoing the champ giant in that zone as well. He could and did one shot me a couple of times before I got his patterns down.

This is a hard lesson to learn for some people. I see it all the time even in Orr where folks should have long learned the lesson. I see them get clobbered by a giants stomp, an abominations big charged hits, or a gorilla’s charge. No one is perfect, but if you are getting downed constantly you need to re-examine you build and playstyle. Not cry on the forums.

Thoughts on Ascended Gear? [Merged threads]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Basharic.1654

The other issue is they are putting this in to supposedly give us something to work towards between exotic and legendary, but they are going to continue to offer multiple avenues to get it. That means it does not solve the original problem.

Exotics are easy to get BY DESIGN. Because there are multiple paths to them it’s never going to be truly hard to get them. The only thing that slows you down is a bit of grinding mats/karma/dungeons/badges. Now if Ascended items are going to have multiple paths to get them, they are going to be acquired just as quickly as Exotics are. And Legendaries are STILL going to be far more difficult, obnoxious, and expensive to get.

As I said earlier I’m less irritated now that I know the gear will not be exclusive to dungeons, but I still fail to see what gap in the original design they are filling.

There is plenty to do at 80 that doesn’t revolve around gear. I have zero interest in any of the legendaries at the moment, and I’ve been geared for weeks. I’ve been bouncing between making fashionable alt-spec gear sets, dungeons, WVW, mat farming, sPvP, puzzles and alts, and I’ve been having a blast. I’m currently sitting on 220k+ karma, and bugger all gold. (I’ve been dressing up the alts in Cultural and faction gear.)

If the need was to give the lamers something else to grind for they could have accomplished this with new gear with Exotic stats and an infusion slot. yet for some unfathomable reason they decided to creep the stats upward.

Basharic.1654

Haven’t seen a storm like this since Blizzard tried to force Real ID down people’s throats.

I am excited for the patch but I have very strong reservations about the ascended gear. My issue is that it is only available in dungeons

This is utterly contrary to how the game was sold. I bought this game with the understanding that I would have multiple avenues to get the best gear in the game. Currently these are crafting, karma purchases, and dungeons. Based on what we know right now, after Ascended gear is fully implemented Dungeons will be the only place to get this gear. That is cutting down the paths to BIS gear to one path that not everyone likes.

Note I would have no issue if they would simply leave stats at exotic levels. Leave the accounting for gem slots in but make the total stat distribution the same as gemmed exotics. Use only infusions as the dungeon progression mechanic that only affects the dungeons and I have no problem with this gear.

I understand what ArenaNet is trying to do, but seriously, this isn’t the way to do it.

My suggestion for the problems expressed in the blog post:

Progression
Keep the new gear, drop the stats to current gear levels. Use infusion as a Dungeon progression and gating mechanic. Add sexy skins and I’m all over it.

Bridging the gap between Legendaries and Exotics
Personally I don’t see an issue here, but fine. Your scavenger hunt idea is good. Run with it. Other ideas are changing the precursors from mystic forge gambling to a more defined but extremely challenging path through a combination of quests, puzzles, events, and achievements.

Things like the gift of exploration you get from world completion are good, there are tons of other things you could do to tie legendaries to achievements. I honestly wonder why they aren’t already tied in more.

Dropping in gear with stat increases isn’t going to solve your problem. It does nothing to build toward legendaries that we’ve seen, and as “something to do in the meantime” it’s just not gonna hold up under assault from the real pros.

You have a chance to make the pros happy with the dungeon ever increasing its difficulty. A new tier of gear with better stats NO MATTER HOW SMALL does nothing but alienate your base audience.

Arenanet, trust your initial design instincts and do not give Ascended items better stats than Exotics. You are going to briefly please a vocal minority who can’t have fun without a hamster wheel, but you are going to lose a whole lot more from the more casual players, which are the massive bulk of your player base.

Finally I’ll wait until I see how it works in game to make my final judgement, and this alone won’t make me stop playing. But if i don’t like how it works, you will feel it financially. My wife and I both play and we allow ourselves to spend up to $40 a month on the cash shop. Keep us happy and we’ll gladly support you as much as we can. Piss us off at your own peril. I can guarantee you there are more people like us than there are “there’s nothing to work for” people.

Why Orr brings out the worst in the "community"

The people I’ve met and talked to are great. The worst I’ve seen out of Maguuma’s community is moving NPCs around in LA, some general kittening about Orr, and laziness at doing much else than the Plinx run in CS.

Every person I’ve seen so far that accidentally trained mobs has done the right thing. I’ve helped and been helped I don’t know how many times. It’s led to some epic fun.

Orr is savage and brutal and the zone design reflects it. I love it.

I will say that the fight is really fun done as intended, i assume it is easy because they had to account for non-true-80’s being in there.

HOWEVER the most FUN part comes in when you realize there is no armor penalties for dying and you run it with your guildmates and try to fear them off the ledges with well timed scarecrow kills….AMAZINGLY FUN. The funniest one is on the first jump down when the mad king ported to there and dropped a scarecrow, i timed the scarecrow kill right as a guildie jumped to the platform and he got feared right back off…..lol.

I love the fight if for no other reason than the king actually moves around.

Our funny story is we were killing him with a guild group when another guilde logged in. Jokingly we told him to go solo the boss, knowing that is exactly what he would do . . . with his level 30 something toon. We finished ours and one of our party members dropped group and went afk, so we invited our solo guy into the party and decided to join him in his instance.

He had the king to 90% – but was basically getting pwned, which in our guild is hilarious. So we charge in all gung ho, but the king had chased him up to the WP and spawned scarecrows. We set foot out of the mosoleum and all got fear bombed instantly off the side landing in a pile as a group. ;-)

Downleveling

Basharic.1654

Hey guys great game I’m having a blast in all areas but one. I don’t tend to like many alts, and I like to do everything on my main. I love the idea of down leveling, but in practice it simply isn’t enough to make lower tier content all that interesting,

My main is a thief and I have him fully geared out in exotics. I’m not built as a glass cannon. In my full regalia regular mobs in lower zones are a three shot affair. Veterans feel like a regular high level mob and champions only provide a challenge if I’m soloing them. Even some of the big world event bosses become pretty easy.

My problem is that I am a fairly considerate player in PvE, and feel like a jerk if I go full throttle through a lowbie zone, especially during DEs. I’ll go full tilt if I am by myself, but as soon as I see a true low level character I feel the need to slow it down, because I could literally prevent them from getting any participation in the event.

This leaves me the options of crafting myself some lowbie gear, which is tiresome and bag-choking, or stripping off gear until I get to where things get interesting again. Now my Charr is a sexy cat, but I think there could be a better solution than getting naked.

My suggestion would be a down leveling slider that will allow players like myself to push ourselves lower than the automatic system already does. Keep the top end of the down leveling where it’s now and give us the option to set our personal down leveling to “X levels below standard down leveling” with the option to go negative for the lowest zones and the option to disable personal down leveling for anything above a certain level . . . say 75. No one wants to be at less than full strength for anything in Orr. :-D

Thank for the hours of fun I’ve had so far!

Battle of Claw Island - Blightghast

The Blightghast fight in the “Retribution” personal story mission may have a scaling issue.

I soloed the mission and had no real problem. But I’ve now helped two different guildies with that mission, and the fight was way, way, way too long compared to when I soloed it. Both times we brought four players to the mission.

I’m not sure if it is simply a scaling issue, as I noticed the last time we did it that a number of the NPCs in the dragon battle were standing around doing nothing. Not dead, just standing around idle.

The first team fight we did against Blightghast we wrote it off since two of us were being silly and got killed early in the fight. We assumed it was simply a matter of it scaled up and then we were two players down for most if it.

The second team fight against him was a little bit better, but not by much.

A related issue is there was no way for dead helper players to rez and return to the fight. I’m assuming that the player who is generating the instance would have an option to return to a checkpoint, but when two of us were dead in that first team fight, there was no option. Our choices were to sit there and watch the two remaining guildies plunk away at Blilghtghast or log out and back in thereby leaving the instance altogether.

I have no idea if this is always the case in personal story or not, I’ve only been killed in someone else’s personal story that one time.

Thank you for your attention and keep up the good work!
