I posted this as a response in another clocktower thread earlier, but seeing as how that thread wasn’t in the Halloween Event forum, I figured I’d put it where more people would see it:

“One other change I think might satisfy a lot of players would be to slow down the speed of the rising acid by maybe 25-50%, but add an extra unique reward for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd players who open the chest at the top. They could even put in a scoring window showing the character names, finishing placement and completion time of those you ran with. This would make it a bit more forgiving for the players that would prefer to hang back and let the herd thin out so they can gauge their jumps better, while also providing incentive for the more competitive players to move as fast as they can (and a means to gloat about their success afterward). It would also help to ensure that a larger percentage of the population would have a better chance at the associated achievement and the base rewards.”

There are quite a few skills in the game that have you launch into the air and smash enemies when you land, and all of them suffer from that same feeling of sluggishness. I don’t really have a problem with the engineer rifle skills being geared toward short-range support play, though.

Being transformed into a halloween skin would be great. I know a ton of people are annoyed by us big charr blocking their view, but I’ve been equally annoyed by my big charr getting snagged on geometry and falling to his death during jumps I know I would’ve made with my human or asura (visibility issues notwithstanding).

Even though I don’t plan on making myself available for this (because I always visit family on Sundays and make a day of food/football), I have no problem with live, one time events. I always thought it was really cool back in the EQ days when GMs would intervene and engage the community with live events — it makes the game feel more dynamic and the time you spend in it more memorable. The idea that every player is entitled to some Developer Guarantee that they’ll be able to play every last piece of content is one of the things that has made MMOs so bland in recent years. Not all content has to be made for every person.

"Not Scrawny, Pygmy."

If you follow the NPC after completing the Queensdale event where you escort the Pygmy Moa handler to the Beetletun carnival and watch the exchange, the moa handler responds with the above line after the carnival lady calls the moas “scrawny.” It is obvious that no contextual notes were provided to the voice actress, and since the writer just used a comma (rather than “Not scrawny . . . Pygmy!” which is maybe how it should’ve been written), the VO artist spoke the line as if addressing someone named Pygmy. It sounds bad, and should probably be re-recorded at some point.

Just noticed it earlier today and thought I’d let the audio team know.

Is Guild Wars 2 too combat-oriented?

Bonzoso.7014

A large part of adventuring in RPGs is always going to be combat, but in Guild Wars 2 it has grown a bit more tedious to me because of the super-overblown mob density and respawns just seconds after death. I enjoy the combat in GW2, but after killing the 50th trivial mob in 20 minutes just traveling from point A to point B, it becomes way too repetitive to remain fun.

I will always appreciate a wider variety of activities in MMOs, though. I can often spend a lot of hours wasting time with fluff and chat — it breaks up the pace into highs and lows and makes me appreciate the intense combat situations more.

I was in Dredgehaunt Cliffs earlier today doing a heart-quest to ‘Protect such-and-such Steading from the Sons of Svanir,’ where there were a couple Sons with a veteran right by the building. After a semi-tough fight because of their summon skills, the replacement enemies (including the veteran) were running up the hill to take the same position before I had even pressed F to loot.

Respawns in this game are out of control and need to be reduced by about 300% in most cases. Obviously they’re going to be high during DEs, and they should scale up in heart-quest areas with multiple active players, but other than that, a universal respawn rate of 3-5 minutes for normal mobs, 7-10 for veterans and 15+ for champions would make off-road traveling much more enjoyable.

ust like wow , i think they should have a build that isnt so reliant on pets, “marksman” but being able to have them just because they do make up a small portion of the dmg.. just not all of it.
and i really dont see why they cant use rifles… if they were changed to wear they could use rifles. i would play one in a heartbeat.

out of curiosity..

if you don’t want to be reliant on a pet… and… want to be able to use a rifle instead of a bow. /why/ do you want to be a ranger at all? i mean.. there is already a medium armour class that isn’t reliant on a pet, and can use a rifle.. it is an engineer. So why not be that?

also “traits” wise, it seems to me that you can make a ranger build that’s less reliant on your pet. isn’t that what the “Skirmishing” trait does? Possibly “marksmanship” too?

i admit i’m not a guru when it comes to “best possible builds” for each profession, but it seems like there are options to decrease your reliance on a pet already.

To be fair, a Rifle-using Engineer does not play at all like a ‘Marksman’ archetype would. Engineer rifle skills are mostly close range, shotgun-like attacks. Warrior rifle skills are more in line with what you might expect from single-target, long range sniper attacks, but then you’re stuck with a slow-moving heavy armor class. Not sure what’s so special about using a rifle over a bow, though.

Area-looting was my favorite convenience feature that I hadn’t seen before in my short time with SWTOR. It was great to just be able to concentrate on wiping out your enemies without worrying about running all over to the few that are sparkling, and then just “loot one and done” when combat was finished. With the number of corpses that can pile up in dynamic events, Guild Wars 2 is the perfect game for area-looting.

Then ask them to wait for you. It’s what we do when a guildie has to afk for whatever reason. Take a break, let the DR wear off or whatever. It’s a minor inconvenience that does not warrant the introduction of a potentially easily abused feature.

A feature I’m pretty sure has been in every MMO I’ve ever played, and this is the most heavily-botted MMO I’ve ever played despite that feature being left out.

Auto-Follow?

Plus, it would make botting super easy too. :P

jk

This might be a nice convenience to add, but it also takes away from the realism of the game. I sort of like getting lost and turned around in a tight passage underground when I’m trying to follow someone. Automatically following them kills that experience. Maybe I’m a masochist, or maybe I just enjoy the game.

From past experience, setting auto-follow in MMOs was usually more dangerous, thanks to the likely possibility of getting stuck on the terrain and having your tether broke in a potentially dangerous spot while afk.

Anyway, there have been so many people since beta who shoot down the idea of /follow like it’s some personal affront to them because it allows people to be “lazy” and “makes botting easier.” (I realize you were joking, this is more directed at the next post) You can tell they’ve never played with a family member in the same household. I don’t know why so many people are offended by the idea of someone setting /follow on their spouse’s character so they can get up and take care of something real quick.

Personally, I think the time it takes to change a skill/trait/item’s tooltip description every time they are tweaked just needs to be chalked up as a necessary cost. I understand that the business model of this game necessitates a lower operating cost than the competition to some degree, but there are some things not worth skimping on. Of course, that’s easy for me to say as just another player and not an employee being pressured to spend my time a certain way, but that’s life.

its interesting to me how everybody’s idea of how to make this game better seems to be play other games instead.

I think it’s pretty noticeable on the forums that some players have given up suggestions and discussions over the game’s future because they’re under the impression that ArenaNet is either a) not listening, or b) doesn’t care. There are so many repeated feature requests that have either not been addressed or been outright denied, and so many threads locked when they turned critical or when a moderator simply felt like it went on too long. I get the impression that a lot of players are walking on eggshells here.

So much of the descriptive text in this game is messed up in one way or another, whether it’s traits that don’t tell players how they work or the countless consumables with tooltips that say nothing other than “Consumable.” Add all the typos, and a game that is mostly polished ends up presenting itself in a very unpolished way. I think they need a small team to go over all the trait/item text with a fine-tooth comb, hopefully sooner rather than later.

It has to be a balance of both. Without adding new content, they risk losing a large portion of the existing players who feel that they have nothing left to do since reaching the level cap, and it’s much harder to recapture the interest of a lost player now than it was 5+ years ago.

this is why i always suggest to people to limit their amount of time playing the game. everyone is so quick to rush to level 80 and when they get there they QQ about there being nothing to do. In this case, there may stil be more to do as thrash pointed out. in addition, even when all those things are completed, i would think that since this is an mmorpg one could still have fun by meeting new people.

Treat this game, or any mmorpg for that matter, as a race to level cap can and WILL result in you getting bored quick.

I think the PvE game begins to show its faults as you reach the middle levels, actually. Once you reach the point where you’ve long since learned all your weapon skills, can only learn a new utility skill every 5+ levels, and have pretty much settled into the build that suits you, the typically satisfying and rewarding nature of leveling is gone. Combine that with the sometimes completely unnoticeable upgrades in gear and the recycled gear graphics, and it’s pretty rare for me to feel excited about my character growing in power.

I understand where people are coming from when then defend the game by arguing that the only reward people should be looking for when they log in to play a game is to have fun, but for a lot of people, being rewarded is part of the fun! Anyway, the game has now been out for just about two months. Even though I’m barely halfway to the level cap, myself, I’d say that we’re past the statute of limitations for claiming people who are level 80 “rushed” to it.

No carrot on a stick is a wonderful thing

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Bonzoso.7014

Bonzoso.7014

It certainly isn’t a bad thing, but combined with the lack of a sub fee, not having a carrot on a stick is probably the reason I’m not really playing very much. Of course, that’s actually a good thing — I’m spending my gaming time playing non-MMOs that I’m more in the mood to play than Guild Wars 2. When I was subbed to WoW, I often found myself playing that all the time and missing out on other games I was also interested in, but I don’t have that issue with this game.

It’s like GW2 was designed to reassure me that I don’t have to log in if I don’t feel like it — like it’s always saying “I’ll be here, mostly unchanged, if you feel like playing again.” So I’ve been playing just a few hours a week…my highest-level character is 42. Maybe I’ll log in a bit more during the Halloween event, or maybe I’ll play Dishonored or X-Com instead. And with AC3 and Halo 4 just a couple weeks away, maybe GW2 will just take a permanent seat as my “side game.”

I hate the idea of EVER making enemies invulnerable when you’re in range and have line-of-sight (well, unless they have a temporary buff or mechanic), but what makes it even worse about the “invulnerable when unreachable” design is that a lot of enemies just have terrible pathing AI and are incapable of running a few feet out of the way and up a 2’ elevation change, so it still triggers the invulnerability if you hit them from range. There are way too many enemy placements that should be able to be pulled from range, but the busted pathing combined with the invulnerability mechanic forces you to run up and engage them in melee range.

Mining animations need to be tweaked to match the mining “channeling” length in many cases — I know my Asura takes 4 swings when mining a normal ‘3 ore’ vein. I’m in the category of people who want them to be account-wide, the way ANet originally said they would be. Gold sinks are important, but I think there are plenty of other gold sinks in this game: waypoints, repairs, crafting costs, 15% trading post fees, the constant need for gathering tools and salvaging kits, and more. I don’t think we need dyes to be character restricted just so they act as another gold sink, and I’d be willing to bet ANet would instantly see a huge jump in cash-for-gem sales and dye pack purchases if they made unlocked dyes usable for every character on the account.

While nobody can argue the convenience of opening a window, clicking a button, and getting into a randomly assembled dungeon run 20 minutes later, I’ll still always prefer it when a game encourages community interaction by requiring players to put together groups the old-fashioned way. Of course, I certainly don’t think of Guild Wars 2 as a good example of an MMO designed with a focus on community, so maybe it doesn’t really matter and a dungeon finder would fit right in.

Personally, I would like ArenaNet to address the cause of the issue; namely, that there aren’t really any rewards for doing a story mode after the first time. That’s why it’s practically impossible for players to get a story-mode group together if we missed the boat during the initial weeks after launch when more people were in the appropriate level range. I believe they mentioned that they’ll be looking into ways to reward players who go back and redo story modes with their friends/guilds, so it should happen eventually.

Respawn time a little too fast.

in Suggestions

Posted by: Bonzoso.7014

Bonzoso.7014

Personally, I think the sweet spot would be to set a global respawn time for all regular mobs that makes it highly unlikely for the person who kills a mob to still be around when it pops again unless they stayed there managing menus or zoned out in chat or something. Make it even longer for veterans and champions. As long as it scales respawn times back down during events and when there are many players around in the same heart-quest area, it would work just fine at like 2 minutes for normal mobs, 5 for veterans, and 15 for champions (assuming veterans and champions eventually get better drop tables than normals).

I don’t think many people enjoy fighting something every 30ft to get where they want to go and then fight it all again on the way back out…that was one of my biggest gripes while beta testing SWTOR. Just because the game has action-packed, mobile combat doesn’t mean the players want to be stuck in combat for 80% of the game. Any activity is trivialized when it’s overdone — players may have a great time fighting that Giant that attacks the town in Diessa Plateau once, but chances are when it attacks again in 20 minutes, the people that just did it are going to let it be.

When I was exploring that area and the nearby village, I couldn’t help but assume that it will be the site of a future dungeon of some kind, probably even with DEs in the village (the golems turning on the people, or something like that). The villagers all talk about how the wizard is watching over them and they are guarded entirely by his golems. They say things about how excited they would be to get invited there, and how it must be so nice to live there because nobody ever comes back.

Only time will tell if ArenaNet’s writers have a similar idea in mind for it as you, but I’ll be very surprised if they don’t open it up for players to go there at some point, and a dungeon is the most obvious choice.

That would be a much easier explanation to swallow if several of the Norn male faces didn’t have age-lined, weathered appearances. Bots are everywhere — I encounter (and report) several during every play session if I’m out in a leveling zone, even if it’s only 30 minutes. If you’re not seeing them, it’s likely you’re just not paying attention enough to spot the behavior that gives them away.

That said, bots could make up a full 25% of the game’s population, and I still would be against the implementation of any design measures that punish legitimate players in the attempt to curb botting.

Action-heavy games need special attention paid to pacing, balancing the combat with occasional downtime, or the action is trivialized and quickly becomes repetitive and stale. It’s one thing to pack enemies together inside their towns, camps or caves where they’re expected to congregate, but it’s another for individual wolves to be spread an even 20 yards apart throughout an entire forest. “Yes the lack of trading is annoying but they need to make money also.”

Are you really, honestly, SERIOUSLY justifying the gutted trade infrastructure with the business excuse?

That doesn’t even make sense. How are they making money by not letting people trade?

They probably aren’t, but the theory behind it is sound. The idea is that, because they take a 5% fee when you post an item on the TP and another 10% when you sell it, they are removing currency from the players by funneling every sale through the TP. And by taking more money from the players, they are hoping that more players will spend real-world money on gems when they don’t have enough in-game gold to exchange.

There are design decisions all around this game that were obviously made in order to encourage purchases on the BLTC (perhaps among other reasons, as well). I’m betting this is one of them.
