Landscape can be facerolled using any skills\traits\gear as long as you know how to dodge\kite\heal.

30+ Fractals can not be facerolled by any\every build.
WvW against AoN can not be facerolled by any\every build.
tPVP can not be facerolled by any\every build.

There are multiple facets to this game and each may require a different build to be effective. When PvE is the sole aspect we are speaking on; the best build is the one with the best offense or one with great defense against multiple opponents while doing good damage.
Just because a build is the best doesn’t mean its the only build that can be used.

I’ve always had an engie and never used nades inside fractals. They are the best a dishing damage and conditions but I don’t want to use them. I’m at Lv33 and can be higher if I decided to keep running them instead of enjoying wvw\pvp.
But in WvW I always use nades because they are the best way to discourage a zerg.
In pvp I use my own builds which I’ve been successful with but not shared.

They will nerf the Engineer one way or another just like they always have. They always will.
People complained about 100nades so the devs said they don’t want the engie doing that much damage. CondiNades has always been around and always has been used and does more overall damage than 100nades but 90% of the engie population hasn’t been using it until now. Now that this build is very popular and they see it can be done by anyone without much difficulty; they will do something about it.
Usually someone either runs a power or condition build but the engie can do both by stacking might. For other classes this isn’t much of a problem because they don’t have access to many conditions or their condition weapons dont have much power to back them up. Engineers have every single condition available to them between pistols and nades.
What they SHOULD do is buff boon removal for all classes and let the community decide whether they want to use it or not. [read: shorter cooldowns and removal of multiple boons]
It would be horrible if one were to remove 3s of swiftness instead of 25 stacks of might >.>

Legit update if you ask me. The rest was icing on the cake. [very ugly medium armour flavored icing.]

They broke Hidden Killer.

I still don’t understand how they could break Hidden Killer.

Maybe that was intentional to kitten on all the solo thieves running around trolling people.
Can’t count how many times a thief failed to kill my Engi and they keep coming back and phasing in and out of stealth just to play with my emotions. shakes fist at thief community
I think WvW is in a good place but I play all aspects of the game with the time I allot for gw2. [Maybe not such a good spot for someone who only plays WvW.] To me culling fix alone is huge. Next I’d like to see them upgrade their hardware\connection so we don’t lag to kitten on the weekends.

Why shouldn’t somebody be rewarded for having more skill?

Because then people with less skill are less rewarded. There are always people who want more and more challenge and want everything to be crazy hard. I have no problem with that, let people play how they most enjoy playing. What I do have a problem with is when that playstyle receives greater rewards, because people playing on hard mode because they enjoy it are already being rewarded by the fun they are having playing it the way they like. If that is not reward enough then they shouldn’t play in that mode. People who would prefer to play on normal mode should not feel pressured by the loot tables to play on harder modes just to get the most efficient loot gain.

I just really hate the attitude of "the existing modes are too easy, there should be a harder one that I would enjoy more. . . and also it should give me extra cookies for playing it because who would want a harder mode if they don’t get paid extra for doing it? If they add a hard mode, play it or not, don’t expect them to give you extra cookies for it.

Would you also like to get paid minimum wage for the rest of your life? [No matter how hard you work compared to your coworkers or how long you’ve been in the field]
Does that still sound like a good idea? [It doesn’t sound fair to me.]

They should. Pre-patch you could cast two of them yourself and both would heal you.
I’ve not run into another engineer since launch that also used super elixir so I can’t tell you for certain by experience that they stack post patch.

Game launched and its a beautiful fantasy world, possibly one of the best ive played.
But im starting to see it go down hill pretty fast.

I mean what exactly is Anets goal here? Is it not a fantasy game ?
It had some questionable concepts at first, then back packs and hoodies came out in the store…..really ? theres almost nothing worth buying as is, and 1 of the 3 armor sets looks like a reject from a bad kiss concert superhero convension..

But now theres the super box…..now im seeing people running around with digital monkeys and theres anoying digital effects and clouds……

So what is Anets goal here? some kind of hybrid game ? will I be able to buy a ford truck in the cash shop soon ? maybe a skate board ?

Am I the only one disapointed by this stuff? The game has the potential to be a fantastic fantasy world and instead its turning into some kind of mashup of american mmo game play and nonsensical japanese anime styling .

I believe the point you are missing is that you are not an Asuran Engineer.
If you have ever been to Rata Sum before March 31st; you’d have seen the magnificence of Asuran technology.
There are glowing lights and floaty things all over the place.
I don’t think the lore of the world is broken just yet.

I could totally understand your gripe if you are a charr [everything in black citadel is dull and mechanical] :-P

RIP Double Super Elixir. I will miss using your absolute superb ability to help me run away from people in WvW. I can not count how many times you saved me by removing an immobilize + cripple\frost. I never expected this…. Why do bad things always happen to good people!? [Warriors are not good people(JayKay!!! /SuicideOff)]
I’m interested to play around with KR for bomb kit in a DPS build but not impressed with that GC of 20s.
How could the devs be so careless and devastate multikit builds?

In that case yes but those mines are weak and those turrets near useless in the current build not to mention how few combo fields we have and how they don’t exactly last long.

Compared to how many AOE damage skills an Ele has the engineer I dont think does as much as area denial as you would expect to be called a class for doing area denial as its focus.

Do we have any links to actual area denial builds that do any decent damage? if its our main focus then it should be the most common build.

You will have a hard time killing anything with that build unless its against a melee toon dumb enough to stay engaged and eat your bombs.
Once I started getting comfortable with the style and switching kits constantly; I started switching things out to deal more damage. [I prefer using P\S because the stun on (Shield#5) will prevent a nub bunker from healing at the last second and (shield#4) is great for knocking thieves out of Shadow Refuge.

Knockbacks + Roots would be considered area denial as well as heavy AoE damage.
An engineer can compete with any bunker and out class them unless the other player has access to stability [and if no backup arrives].
Rifle + Bomb Kit gives you a good source of knockbacks, AoE damage & roots which are the bane of any player trying to sit on a small node.
imo engineers are one of the best de-bunker bunkers because we can heal and do damage at the same time with really short cooldowns. Only time you’ll run into trouble is when backup arrives and they start CCing you.
I’ve had a couple of battles where backup came to support a bunker ele\guard and I was still able to keep the point in my favor because they couldnt reliably root me in place.
Guardians currently have the best [AoE area denial skills] with those barriers you can’t cross + knockbacks and stability.

I would also call it a 20s CD.
But maybe they changed EG so that you can’t have a continuous light field + heal down so they changed how this one skill is effected by the trait.
I’m not speaking about anything except EG. Just because the trait works for one utility; doesn’t mean it has to work exactly the same for each of them.

I’m not trying to say im right and your wrong. I was trying to explain what you were trying to explain in different words. I don’t care what anyone calls it.
In the end KR wont proc with EG until 10s after that light field is gone.

EG’s proc from KR does not start its timer until the 10s light field disappears.
Effectively making it a 20s CD from the time you initially switched to the EG.

Which build are you using to fight the Ele?
Med kit is my defacto heal but it hurts more than it helps against Eles because of the time wasted dropping meds instead of applying pressure.
My [bunker w/ power] build uses medkit but was testing against an ele yesterday using Rampage gear and it was an easier fight using Elixir H. Having that extra time to apply pressure helps to keep them flustered between using their heals.
I also find Elixir gun is quite handy against them. [More poison + gap creator + condition removal w/ a small heal]

Nice post Folly. I agree with your points overall, though I’m going to speak primarily to your points about communication, community involvement and transparency.

The trick with our communication, is to find a good balance, on multiple levels.

First, we have to be conscious of the balance between how much time we have to be posting on the forums and writing blog posts, with how much time we have to be working on actual development: bug fixes, profession balance, designing new features, implementing new content, etc.

Next it’s important for us to be conscious of the balance between saying too little, leaving people pessimistic about when things are coming out and guessing about how those things will work, and saying too much, harming our ability to later change, postpone or abandon something that we’ve already publicly committed to.

Finally we need to consider the balance between relying on community feedback too heavily, where it’s super time consuming for us to process and leaves us feeling unable to make a change without first asking for a community vote, and relying on community feedback too little, where we might miss some key information that could impact the success of our future releases.

Hopefully we are getting this balance pretty close most of the time, and if not, it’s always something we are working towards improving.

Anyway, keep up the good, constructive posts!

We are not your boss. Anything you say to the community is not set in stone. Every sensible person knows things aren’t set in stone and things can change. You aren’t winning any awards or gaining more players by being tight lipped. We don’t care if your plans change or if something gets pushed back. We care about knowing if “update #2” is going to bring “eSport” or if we have to wait until “update 22”. Trust me; you can stay tight lipped and provide “eSport” in “update 11” but most of your serious players will be gone because you lost their trust long ago.
Every aspect to the game shouldn’t be decided based on user feedback, but your timetable of updates\additional content\bug fixes should be. I’m sure many players would have appreciated bug fixes\another game type\additional class balance tweaks over obtaining an additional map.
Players aren’t jumping up and down raving over the quality of GW2’s PvP development. Ask a group of players what they like and dislike about the game and if there are more points on the dislike spectrum then its safe to assume something isn’t quite right. How many players have commented about portal and timewarp? Quickness? Thief trollage? OP bunker Eles & guards? Unkillable rangers 1v1? Playing on the same tPVP map for an entire week?
How can you say you listen to the community at all? How can you say you communicate effectively?
The player base never knows what tricks you have up your sleeve until we log into the game. The patch notes aren’t even released on patch day until the game is back online.
Not sure where you developers are getting your assumptions on communication from. How can anyone be angry at you for being honest and trying to develop and support the competitiveness of GW2?

I agree with a lot of you here that turrets are a weak way to use a utility slot, especially when you have multiple turrets drop all at once. My question is: if turrets are a weak way to use a utility slot, what is a strong way to use a utility slot?

Right now I am leveling PvE with elixirs and elixir gun as a kit for the extra heal and the acid bomb when mobs get too close.

For PvE; just use whatever helps you kill faster or survive longer.
Turrets sometimes make fights longer by shooting mobs standing nearby. Sometimes I’ll fight two mobs and once one dies; the turret will shoot a non aggro’d mob….[thanks for helping Mr Turret -_-]

Choosing turrets is kind of like not choosing a utility at all.
In PvE most mobs will go straight for the turret and break it.
In WvW the small battles are very mobile so your turret will get left behind. In big battles it will die after 1 shot due to many AoEs.
In PvP you can strategically place the turret in an out of the way ledge and get good damage off the rocket turret. All other turrets fail in comparison to RocketTurret.

Yesterday I was playing PvP and came across a “Turret Engineer”. It dropped all its normal turrets on one of the points and I just sat there and laughed the saddest laugh you would have ever heard. I honestly felt bad for the person.
So I walked into the middle of the 3 turrets and the Engi dropped supply crate on me. Now I’m sitting there in the middle of 6+ turrets along with the Engi hitting me…..I just stood there in one place dropping bombs. 5 bombs later [less than 3 seconds] all the turrets were gone. A few more seconds and the Engi was dead.

There is a trait that makes the toolkit’s auto attack chain heal turrets but I’m not sure how significant that heal is. There is also a trait that makes turrets take 30% less damage and another that makes them heal over time. If you take all these traits; using turrets might be a viable niche BUT you still have the problem of them not being able to move. They are more useful when you are farming a dense area of enemies.

If you can’t kill a bunker or take their point; your doing it wrong.
I’m a engineer and I have absolutely no problem assaulting a guardian or ele’s point.
I will take it and if they stay on it; they will either die or I hold it while they try their hardest to kill me [unsuccessfully].

The point you make about it being boring depends on what class you play and how you use it. I have great balanced fights all the time that are exciting and fun. I survive some crazy situations and sometimes I get caught slipping but I often pull off amazing wins. [until some thief\mesmer comes to finish me off.]

I can vouch as a bunker engineer that rangers are the only class that can stand toe to toe on the point with me. A good ranger in melee range with its heals and stupid pet force me off point just to survive its damage. At the same time they usually can’t kill me unless I stay on point. I can jump off and then come back on and knock them off so they can’t take it.
IF their pets didn’t get a full heal when they swap it would be a whole different story.

It may be true that it is harder to “balance” without trait trees but they are doing a horrible job right now anyway so why not?

Some classes have trees where everything makes sense and all the traits compliment each other. Some classes *cough*engineer*cough* have random traits in their trees and a good chunk don’t work and a good chunk would be better off in other trees.

The personal expectations you hold based upon the advertisement may never be achieved to your individual liking. Personally i think they did a wonderful job with the PvP system in general, they just need to find a way to promote everybody to get involved with it more (laurals for dailys perhaps?), the rewards and titles are solid, show rankings, and give nice skins based on ranks.

but it’s all subjective to your expectations.

Do you even PvP? Have you PvP’d in any other game?
You can’t even compare PvP in this game to GW1……How do you make a second game with less features than the original?
GW2 should have had everything GW1 had at the start of development and then built on top of it.

Would you say “Racing Game 2” was “developed wonderfully” when it has less tracks and less cars than “Racing Game 1”?

This hurts so bad in PvE but it was a bug and needed to be changed. You could never actually die while this was bugged unless you were fighting 2+ veteran mobs. A normal on level mob shouldn’t outlive you if you used mist form to reset your health at the last minute.
In PvP it was such an OP exploit. You wait until the very last second and then hit #2 to not only heal 50% health but also move away from your enemy.

The thieves have this thread to get all the QQ under one roof that they can enjoy while drinking their morning cup or Joe\Tea+crumpets.

The first suggestion I’ll make here is the redesign of our traits + trait bonuses to the following:
Power + toolbelt recharge
condition damage + duration
Precision + crit damage
Tough + healing power
Vitality + boon duration

Moving the traits around would take some finagling but it sure can be better than it is right now. Removing some of the worthless\broken traits would be awesome as well.
[I’m looking at you “+5% damage when endurance is full”. Good 25% of the time in PvE; never so much in PvP\WvW.]

[Try to use logic here instead of making an excuse or ignoring logic.]
Why make all kits the same attack power as a 1 handed weapon? [Isn’t a bomb or flamethrower stronger than a pistol?]
Why make 2 handed weapons have more attack power in the first place?
You can’t attack with two 1 handed weapons at the same time so why even give each weapon an attack power?
Why not just make attack power = power + condition damage?
Sometimes people make more work for themselves. Sometimes developers don’t use the best logic. Just because someone’s job is to make games doesn’t mean they are going to be the best at it.
[P.S. I don’t care if they buff\nerf anything [it’s just a game]. I’m only trying to impart the gift of logic to some people on the forums.]

If you were into logic or programming; it would make sense.
What doesn’t make sense is why the mods haven’t merged or closed this thread with the other one.
It seems they care more about squashing free speech than they do about closing threads that should be closed.

brinson, kits all show the same attack power on your stat screen, that is not a direct way to measure the power of the kit. for example I will compare 3 kits I just put on, all of which has the same attack as u said. Elixir gun does 242 dmg, grenade does 200 twice, and tool kit does 484. if they all had the same attack why do they do different damage? power to damage ratios. therefor attack power is a pointless number that u just see not change so u feel you aren’t doing more damage

This is not exactly true. Yes each skill does it’s own individual damage but the attack power does make a difference. That attack power is the base damage which is used in the calculation for each skill.
Previously and currently: Each kit has it’s own individual attack power.
Complaint is why would they all have the same attack power as a 1 handed exotic.

Attack power is a stat and they said stats will now carry over.
The solution that makes the most sense is to make the attack power carry over from whatever weapons you are actually using.
Can you think of a good reason why it shouldn’t?

It is true they never said the attack power would transfer over.
It is also true that it only makes sense that it would OR each kit would have it’s own individual attack power.
EVERY kit should not have the same attack power of a 1 handed weapon.
Don’t support lazy\negligent development.

Being an Engineer and having a thief run up thinking he is skilled enough to take you out.
After 5 seconds: I’m at full health and he is out of initiative and at half health. He runs away.
One of his non stealthy teammates run up and we go at it 1v1. POW Thief pops up.
I’m still not dead. The thief is confident that he can take me down with his partner’s assistance so he stays in melee until every last initiative is gone. He uses his heal do disappear.
POW I drop my Supply Crate on his invisible head and continue dropping bombs.
A dead thief appears.

As a bunker Engineer; Five Gauge is fun to fight against. Engi v Engi fights tend to end up playing chess. Each person knows what the other is capable of and is always watching to see where the other moves next trying to fight the best time to take a blow in order to land a checkmate.
One of the benefits of being an Engineer is that we are underplayed; undervalued and misunderstood which allows our foes unexpected death for not understanding what we are capable of.

Shield #4 – Reflects ranged attacks but doesn’t block melee attacks. You can not move while using this skill.
Shield #5 – Blocks unlimited ranged attacks for its duration. Will block 1 melee attack and stun the attacker; ending the channeled skill. You can move while using this skill.

1. Blowing up healing turret makes your regen only heal 5/s….This is THE biggest bug for my build. If I am in group with another engi and they use heal turret; my 250 heal/s turns into 5/s for 60+ seconds.

2. Remove all traits that don’t work and make ones that do work. [Don’t waste time trying to edit the code; use code you know already works and apply it to engineers.]
More builds = more fun\versatility

3. imo: Make self knockback\retreating skills ignore cripple & freeze. [Rifle #3&5; EG #4; and Rocket Boots should always launch you the same distance]

4. imo: Make Shield #4 block melee attacks. How come the engineer has no block against melee when using the shield? This will free up 1 utility slot if you only use Tool Kit for the block. [Please!]

They will be scrutinized whether they talk or not. Why are devs so scared to say they are working on something. Why would someone care about forum trolls or 13 year olds complaining saying "you said you were doing this, that, and the third! I want. I want, I want!! ".
Don’t kid yourself saying they are working hard instead of posting on the forums. It takes 1 minute to say “Hey guys we hear you’re complaints but don’t agree with them; stfu.” [I’m joking but the example shows that they don’t have to type 500 word detailed posts.]
Personally, I feel silence is not the best option. People get excited when they see a dev post something relevant. A dev post means they are taking time [2 MINUTES] out of their schedule to show the people they care. The devs are celebrities on these forums. They are in the public eye and should be somewhat open across the board. How hard would it be to make 1 relevant post in each of the class forums; PvP; WvW and the GW2 discussion forum?
How awesome would it be if one of the devs came in and said “Hey we see the engineer isn’t the most popular class out there and we recognize some of it’s growth areas and are currently working on something for you guys. Stay Tuned!”

That one. And weird. And depressing that we don’t have an unbugged kit. I knew MK was screwed up, in that you couldn’t hit 6 again to unequip, and everyone knows about Flamethrower’s LoS issues. (Makes me wonder what the issue lurking in TK is.)

TK’s Magnet doesn’t always pull the target to you. They either go:
1. Halfway to you
2. Appear to come to you and then port back to the start location while knocked down
3. Appear to come to you and then port back to the start location while knocked down but once they get up and move; they are actually where they were supposed to be. [usually ending up behind you if you try to run closer to them]
Can’t be a lag issue due to the fact that this only happens on the skill which is a pull. Doesn’t have weird things like this happening on our knockbacks.

I tested them and noticed that they do stack.
Going from 0 endurance to full is about a 2-3s difference between using only vigor and using them both.

You have no idea how balanced the engineer is if you do not play tPVP. [Most Of]The best players of each class show off their skills there. There is less zerg than wvw and everyone is on an even playing field stats wise.

WvW will tell you NOTHING about balance. Do not watch a video someone made in WvW and say “way engineers do have viable builds”.
1. No one ever makes videos when they lose a fight against a good player.
2. WvW uses PvE gear [some people do not have the optimal build they want yet.]
3. Players are upleveled. Killing players who do not have all their skills/traits/gear is not classy.
4. Any and everyone joins WvW whether they are good or not. [Try playing a couple paid PVP tournaments then come and speak about the engineer. Bad players don’t waste their time in this corner of the game.]
5. If you say engineers are fine: Tell us what your experience is. Do you play WvW, sPVP, tPVP, Paid PVP, FoTM (aka PvE).

I play my engineer in all avenues. I play my Engi using heal\condi\tough gear. Elixir gun, Infused Bombs and toolkit are my choices. Pistol\Shield for my real weapons.

WvW: I don’t have to die if I don’t want to. I can block for 7s while moving with perma swiftness. There is no fun when most people run away or zerg. I like to showcase my skill against good opponents and there aren’t many to find here.
tPVP: [I dont do sPvP] Start of the match I go straighter to the other teams’ point and take it. Bunker down and have my roamers support me. Other team is always caught off guard but if there is a mesmer with roaming theif on their end; Engi is always toast. Other combinations of two players and I can survive for a few seconds waiting for backup. [A player’s skill using the class\skills\traits available make THE most difference in this game mode.]
FoTM: Mostly pugged up to Lv14. It is starting to get REALLY dangerous. You can’t sit in your precious SubparElixir for 10s to heal up…Trash pulls are crazy stupid for my build. You Need To Move At All Times Or Die. Boss fights are easy and never have a problem staying alive. Run in > drop both SEs and regen from the tool kit > drop smoke bomb > Confuse combo from Bomb+Toolkit+Pistol [2k confusion damage per attack]> drop fire bomb and throw wrench through it > drop as many bombs as you can before getting to half health > retreat + medkit heals.

In my experience the Engineer is not completely destroyed. They need to not be nerf’d next patch and instead have their bugs fixed. They need to have their traits reworked so that the whole thing makes sense. They need turrets to be mobile or remove the CD when picking them up. They need to not be nerf’d when we get weapon stats on kits. They need to not be nerf’d. Seriously.

Leveling Engineer need help

There’s something that has been slowly being suggested to us this whole time. It’s kind of a secret. You have to decide whether to make your character more suited for WvW or PvE, but the process is mostly the same.

When playing your Engineer, press F12; you’ll see a menu pop up. Choose the middle button.
When you’re on this page, you may see some empty slots that you haven’t filled up yet. Click one of them.
The details don’t matter, but if you want to be good at PvE, choose the “mesmer” or “guardian” or “warrior” option.
Play as normal. Just note that your autoattack and other skills are much stronger now. It also removes the bugs from the majority of your traits.

This is NOT an exploit and I’m pretty sure it’s completely legit. Plenty of Engineers I know have done this, and they’re still having fun.

It’s arguably one of the strongest builds available to Engineer at the moment.

I have to admit that this build works wonders. I’ve noticed an immediate drastic increase of DPS and survivability. +1

Say you are an Engineer in real life:
There are many different types of engineers out there.

Your specialty is that you are an electrical engineer. You are awesome at your job of 15 years.
One day you wake and realize that you can no longer be an Electrical Engineer.
You and every one of the ex-Electrical Engineers are now Nuclear Engineers.

Every day the true Nuclear Engineers say how bad you are at doing what they do better. You try your hardest every day but do not have the tools you need to succeed on the same level as the true Nuclear Engineers.

Solution: Go drinking every night and start bar fights until you figure out how to be an Electrical Engineer again.

The other problem is there is no real penalty for bad play with the initiative system. If you miss an ability, for instance using HS out of range (or it being dodged) you should be penalized with additional initiative use.

just REMOVE initiative its stupid we all have cd’s except the thief class…

If you remove the initiative system, you do realize that the people that are QQing about how OP we are will still be QQing. Due to the fact that IF they take out initiative, they will have to buff our individual weapon skills and adding extra affects to our abilities to compensate. So in essence, we will hit even harder and be given more durability in straight up fights.

Umm your skills are your skills; why would they need to do something extra special?
They aren’t auto attacks you know….
