After reading this I feel you have some good points but I completely disagree with your final assessment. You like everything they did except about how it was done and come to the conclusion it was terrible and in the wrong direction?

I loved the new content and although there is room to improve with each thing as you said I think it was a step in the right direction.

- World content:
Got me to explore more of the world I haven’t been to in a long time. Maybe the reward could have been different or how I went about doing it but the goal of it was good and in the right direction including the champion’s design even if some of it was rocky.

- Gauntlet:
Amazing. Good direction in boss deign and the goal of it (running different builds, reacting differently, etc) was perfect. The problem as you said was more about access to things such as armor, food, tickets, etc. (I have another post about it somewhere else) I know each profession can beat it and I have friends that have done so.

- Pavilion:
Good world content. Not made for groups or skilled group play. Just good old fashion beat on the boss. The bosses have some actually very devastating attacks this time however which is why I felt it was in the right direction. It’s not supposed to be that instance, elite dungeon for people. They’re free to expand on this area anytime they with though and once the event celebration is over I see no reason why it couldn’t also have an instanced dungeon-like mode attached to it that you want. Because it doesn’t play the way you want doesn’t make it bad content, just different, and it was a step in the right direction for that different content.

You had some very good points a lot of people can agree on but I still disagree with your final assessment.

Put Living World stuff in WvW!

This is all nice but when it comes down to it…The reward for playing the more difficult (WvW) content of the game is vastly outshadowed by the reward for even mindless PvE world boss spamming.

Why would anyone who PvEs ever consider joining up in WvW where it’s much harder and has an abysmal reward system? They wouldn’t. You come face to face with a 50 man zerg from a PvE’ers point of view and that’s just like, “Yeah…fk that I don’t get anything for it I’ma go kill a lvl 15 boss.” WvW is a complete waste of time in every way and does not encourage anyone to play it for any reason other than just to be playing it.

WvW does not reward you as a player.
WvW receives substantially less attention from ANet as a whole.
WvW is much harder to accomplish anything in.

Really why do we play this again?

Didn’t read whole thread but I liked how difficult this was.

My two main problems were;
- Waypoint @ bottom
- I don’t personally own every armor in the game.

These two things were the worst. The waypoint was’t that bad, I’m just lazy. The goal of getting you to change your build is great and all but I’m not a rich character (I WvW) and I don’t have 10000 sets of armor for all my characters. Getting me to change my build and playstyle is great but buying all that gear…nty. It’s worth noting though I did all except the last one running the same armor on my Mesmer and only changing a couple of traits (just traits, not having to retrain them) so I kinda counter my own point but I had to buy some new gear for my Ranger doing whats-her-face and that hurt my wallet.

Personally, I like that a lot of people are having trouble with this. Makes my reward mean more to me knowing there’s a lot of people who just can’t do it. Not because it relies on luck (which it doesn’t and the argument it does is silly) but because it requires you to think and play differently than a majority of the content in the game. Obviously it’s going to be harder for some professions than others at certain times but I’ve heard of every profession being able to it.

I think the idea of Ascended gear having stat customization (like future Legendary weapons) would go a long way to improving, at least my own, experiences with this update and ones similar. I like changing my builds and playstyle but gear is a major restraining factor when it comes to that. Couple that with an item that lets me remove runes and sigils without destroying another item and I feel we can all get back to enjoying GW2 the way the original GW was enjoyed instead of having to worry over getting new armor every time something comes up that encourages changes such as Living Story, Skill updates, bug fixes, etc.

@Nuorus Well if you mainly PvP on your ranger than there’s no real issue because in PvP the ranger does fine and is actually one of the better profs, the problems arise when you go into PvE and WvW.

Hey,
With Master’s Bond trait, prior to the last patch, i used to be able to see numbers go up on my pet whenever we killed a foe.

After the last patch, i no longer see any change in attribute values.
I have tested this for about 2 days now, nothing has changed.

Is this a bug brought by the latest patch?

I’ll test this myself for you as well.
I normally don’t use it though as it’s completely counter-intuitive to all the pet skills so I’ll get back to ya.

Thieves don’t have longbows or greatswords, so thief is unlikely to become my main. That being said, I’m not particularly impressed by rangers or warriors either, so I’m really not sure where to go from here. Maybe they could give the longbow to guardians…

Thief with a longbow would be my main in a heatbeat.

I have played since 3 days headstart mainly with Warrior and I never understood the hate towards Rangers. The Ranger can do so amazing things, pet is actually useful and ranger brings alot in party so I love to have it in my groups. Also I have found very skilled Rangers in PvP and they makes Rangers shine.

Here is what I don’t really like in certain dungeons:
Thief in arah is a bit horrible. Lacks range. I think their pistols needs atleast a trait to make the range longer. U need range on lupi and some bosses if u ain’t with pro team. I enjoy taking new guys trough arah and if u got low range u get hard time.

Condi Mesmer, in any dungeon, feels kinda … waste of space. Necro can do condis better. Thanks to max condi stacks condi builds overall in dungeons are kinda not so good. I usually take 1-2 condi dealers max to my group because of the max stacks.

Full zerker guardian who doesn’t know anything about the class itself – any dungeon.

any class with mf gear.

I’m lvl52 fracs, I got 500 frac runs and I have dungeon master. 1700hours played. I’m an officer of biggest guild of Aurora Glade(like that matters :P) and I find Rangers USEFUL and always WELCOME to my groups.

I appreciate you having the nice words for the profession but there are obvious and very serious issues with many core designs of the Ranger profession that cannot be denied and are becoming even more apparent with each update. As someone who doesn’t play one and only sees Rangers during casual play or PvP skirmishes those flaws will be much less noticeable. A lot of the general hate is indeed overblown but it isn’t entirely baseless. Again, thank you for your words as an outside perspective.

So basically your thinking is, the only way to fix these things is to completely trash them and start over. Not to work with what we have, within the design of what we have and make them work. That is typically what is done when rebalancing and attempting to fix a class. It’s the main reason your whole design is infeasable, because when you’re done you have a similar but different class, not just an improved version of the original class.

We aren’t trying to trash the way Arena.net has build the ranger. It just doesn’t fit the play style that the ranger should have. I think they did a way better job in Guild Wars 1. There are some things that they really screwed up on (SWORD) but overall they made the ranger correct in their play style. Honestly I agree with everything Castaliea has said. Some are saying the spirits are op, but are they switchable on the fly if you have to switch them out of combat? I see no difference from any other class.

Well that and considering you can only have one of them up at a time for only half the time and two of them are exact copies of Warrior banners I find it really funny anybody had a problem with them. I do agree that all of these ideas of course need refinement as every single thing was “an example of”. It’s not the exact effects I’m pushing but the overall general idea of the abilities we could be provided with (while keeping the theme of the Ranger) which a lot of people seemingly decided to ignore.

But anyways, it doesn’t matter because as we stated in the beginning none of this is ever going to see the light of day because it’s not an easy solution and easy solutions are the only thing you can expect to happen even if they’re only band-aid fixes.

So I got my ranger to level 21, and I have to say I am enjoying it. Anyways I have been reading some on the ranger forum, and all I hear is ranger is bad.

Is this true? For WvW and endgame dungeons. Should I just roll a warrior or thief. I really liked the idea of being in leather armor with a giant great sword. But if I will be useless/not up to par then whats the point.

Ranger’s are viable in everything and if you really enjoy the class stick with it.
That being said…
If however you get into serious WvW, GvG, newly designed “challenging content”, or most Dungeon PUGs people will simply not want you. The Ranger may be viable in all game types but it is not optimal in a few of them for some very core reasons which do not seem like they’ll be addressed anytime soon and in more serious play if it isn’t optimal it isn’t worth bringing.

There are people on both sides of the fence. Some will tell you it’s an amazing class and is amazing all the time (which is false) and some will tell you its terrible all the time and never worth using (which is also false).

TL;DR
- If you want to get into more serious group play I would sadly suggest another character.
- If you really like being a casual Ranger and are willing to put yourself and your team through the increasingly inevitability your entire profession mechanic will be useless a majority of the time then stick with it.

There was a data mine that looked like it dug up something that split transmuted items so you can get your legendary weapons back. I’ve lost a lot of faith in ANet but seeing as this is more of a PvE thing I doubt you guys have much to worry over. They take care of you guys.

Then after that it’s, “If we eventually take another look at the class we might make a few notes about some possible improvements we may or may not make.”

Then it becomes, “We decided to take another look at the class and determined there are a few minor changes we are thinking about making but we aren’t ready to share any of them with you yet.”

Then you wait to see IF you ever get anything. It isn’t a question of “when” it’s a question of, “How many IFs are left?”.

Don’t “fix” the matching system, fix the evolution ratings. If you are in last place and it’s not reasonably close, you should de-evolve. Otherwise it’s like saying “yea you got blown away, but we thought you’d get blown away even worse so good job” ….. that is not a fair or appropriate message to send. When you lose you should be given a better chance next week to win. Evolution doesn’t keep players around… winning does.

Rewards… actual WvW rewards do as well. Which are completely nonexistent when compared with the ease of the rest of them game.

Yep…

I will add this in though, by estimate the WvW population is still a minor one in GW2. While it deserves some attention it is probably getting a fairly accurate percentage of development in comparison to the percentage of WvW players in GW2. PvE is way more popular at least in the first 12 months.

Honestly though, how much of this is due in part to the absolutely terrible reward system you find in WvW? Killing a lvl 15 boss in a starter zone gets you more of a rearward from killing a 50+ player zerg.

There is literally zero incentive to play this game type other than to just be playing it.

It’s shallow, there is no reward, it’s more difficult, and ANet pays no attention to it…

What other outcome was expected of such a game type…?

It’s something ANET needs to keep working on.

Part of the problem is how easy it is to stack defensive and offensive stats for condi builds (condition damage, toughness, healing power) compared to direct damage builds (power, precsion, crit damage, toughness, healing power).

I have more fun with my direct damage builds but its disappointing I can’t use them as well in small group combat

Well that should be the thing. It takes time to deal damage with condi builds so they need the sustain. If you’re running full power dealing direct damage should, by normal standards, be faster.
Risk vs Reward.
The problem is that Ranger cannot apply the amounts of damage needed to maintain such a trade off due to our profession mechanic and the way all of our weapon skills are designed.
That is sadly why they are seen as much inferior in that category while seen as above average in other category because we can spec for that sustain while simultaneously specing pets for DPS.
This leads to problems in group play and challenging content as we cannot bring the DPS without the pet specifically for it. Pets are drastically limited to an AI which obviously cannot react as a human as well as never being able to deal any sorts of AoE.

The entire class is a mess and almost every single aspect needs a major overhual.

what game are you playing?

I feel I should ask you the same thing if you feel we are not inferior group members in large fights, do not lack faster front loaded power DPS options, are not becoming a liability the more challenging content is designed, and are not seen as above average skirmishers due to being able to tank while DPSing with a third party.

Also, you’re right, I should not be excited to get rewards at all. Man I feel so much better now. In fact, that was such a burden I let go of now I feel like walking into work and telling my boss he doesn’t have to pay me this month. I don’t need a reward or compensation for my work anyways. I felt his statement was a bit harsh, but having seen your reaction and you comparing rewards in the game to getting paid at work, I think he is right. You need definitely need to take the game less seriously.

If I was you I would submit a support ticket as well as put a post about it in the bug forum. Those are the two ways you are most likely to get the rewards you should have gotten.

His statement implied that I should be playing the game for having fun, not for rewards and if I was looking for rewards I should really question what I was doing. In the same way if you work for money and not enjoying what you’re doing you should really question what you are doing. His statement was none other than a completely ignorant comment with no purpose other than to show, what he believes, are his own superior ideals.

That was what I was trying to point out to him in an equally harsh tone. I already stated what I planed on doing in the mean time and I thank you for the advice you decided to actually contribute instead of trying to only insult someone.

Can we please get an official statement for this? Like “We are investigating” or “It is intended”. Is it so hard??

Do you realize how long it took them to acknowledge the ecto salvage “bug” (ie stealth nerf)? That was PvE! PvE for gods sake!

I have also noticed a drastic reduction of lootbags, but have zero hope of Anet acknowledging or even investigating it.

I’ve noticed zero reduction in loot from PvE tags.

This was probably a WvW stealth nerf. Why? I don’t know. It doesn’t address any of the issues with the game type and instead only further limits the already abysmal amount of loot WvW provides as well as probably creating some player hostility about others affecting your loot.

I really think the WvW community deserves a very nice and long AMA from the staff with 100% transparency. No more, “We aren’t ready to tell you.” crap.

Honestly, this would not be a problem if the time limit was longer.
All it does is encourage the typical full offense zerk meta. Shame on me for having a slightly different set up.

Oh god i know right? Remember back when they said that everyone can do everything but you can spec to be better at different aspects but still bring everything else? I guess i missed the memo where that changed to “Everyone can do everything, unless you’re not in zerker gear, then you don’t get to clear content cause y u no DPS?”

PS I just beat it.
(To be fair though I did have to literally go and buy some different items. Not a full set, but some. They it was supper easy and she dropped very fast on the first try.)

If you don’t run full zerk you just don’t do enough damage that way.

(by “full” i mean “a lot of damage”)

I know… and as i’ve told all my friends i’m not about to regear for 1 fight, however i’ve been told that if you damage a vision of mortality and then die to it it’ll rez you, which means pet is alive…. so i may start abusing this….

There is no place for rifle within the already existing weapon skills. Between the longbow and shortbow, there is nothing left for the rifle to bring as a unique weaponset.

If anything, the ranger class is desperately lacking in control based weaponsets on the power side. Personally, for nostalgic reasons, I would love to see a hammer.

However, if somebody is creative enough to put the design themes that the current weapons lack into a reasonable skillset for other weapons (aka rifle), there probably would be less opposition to the idea of rangers receiving a rifle, as the core argument against rifle is that is doesn’t make sense thematically (it would need to be similar to the harpoon gun to make sense), and that it would just be another ranged weapon with no unique purpose.

However, if ranger rifles functioned as shotguns, maybe with a basic autoattack, a block/evade, an immobilize, a blowback, and a big damage point blank attack with a possible stun, I might finally get on board with the idea (same tools I would want on the hammer).

Screw it man. Bring back the Bunny Thumpers!

I just want my GW1 ranger back (though even that had serious flaws and limitations), but at this point that seems unlikely to happen.

Um… compared to the GW2 Ranger my GW Ranger was a god… pun intended.

But there is a point to be had. I’m all for pets, I always ran a pet in GW. But it was my choice. I choose to run that pet because I liked him. But when I really had to I could put him away and be serious. There was no choice in this game. We are forced Beastmasters 100% of the time and as many threads have pointed out; There is content that is just not suited for such an AI.

Honestly though, I’m mostly upset about the fact that they took the fun out of pets by forcing them on you.

I think there should be a trait (or skill, elite or not) that remove the pets and increase the ranger damage by X% amount, would fix a lot of headache from the dev and the playerbase.

I dont think straight % bonus is the right answer tbh. :/

In my opinion, rangers should be able to use rifles. Seeing as their a mostly ranged class, it would just make sense. Warriors can use longbows, so why cant rangers use rifles? What do you guys think?

In addtion, Warriors uses Rifle (Arena net twist)

But Ranger in the other-hand, is the class (True to its core) is the class to posses Rifle, beside Engineer.

Ranger class not being able to equip Rifle yet Warrior does, is Baffling.

This again is another case of Ranger class being Intentionally designed toi Fail.

What I find baffling also is that, whenver Arena net speak of any Improvement to the Ranger class; they always make Ranger class in comparrison to the Warrior class.

They won’t improve our pets attacks and our pets ability to ‘stick’ to our targets, due to being Warrior-like.

I’m sure Arena net had thought of the Idea of giving Rangers Rifle, but as again, it would make Rangers only like a Warrior.

In other word..

‘Leave all those to the Warrior class; we don’t want Rangers to be like Warrior class no matter what.

I’m sure you know, Warrior have “pers” as well on their Elite skills.

(I Promise You.. very soon, they will have Stealth as well.)

There was a very legitimate reason they specifically decided not to go with a Rife Rangers. Because, opposite of what you said, Ranger at it’s core is against rifles. They did not want the Ranger to be embracing this destructive technology and instead be a more spiritual woodsman which of course is the complete opposite of that weapon.

Maybe we’ll get the weapon one day, maybe not. Lore evolves and maybe one day a Ranger will pick up a Rifle and start to move away from the spirits of nature but that would start to contradict the very basis of the class so who knows.

My resting statement;
It’s not what the class needs at the moment so I wouldn’t put much effort into it.

But in all seriousness, this has been suggested 100 times over. Let me give you a summary of how this thread will go:

Half the people with love the idea because they see rangers in terms of army rangers or RANGErs.

Half the people will hate the idea because they see rangers as masters of nature and therefore using a mechanical weapon is stupid.

This thread will then progress to people suggesting other weapons they want such as a melee staff or mainhand dagger before finall someone points out that ANet plans in time to give all weapons to all classes.

Will we eventually get one? Probably. Don’t hold your breath.
Devs seem to do a lot of back and forth with ideas though. First it was, Ranger will never have one. Then it was, “We’ll be working very hard to expand the available weapons for every profession.”. Now, from some 3rd party interview with no dev quotes its, “Every weapon for every profession!!!!”

If you reallllly want a rifle… go play a Warrior because it will probably be a very long time till Rangers see much of anything.
