What is the point of WvWvW?

I want to like it. I join in about once a day for a bit. However, after I upgrade something like a camp fully, and then see one or two people able to take the camp as if it was never upgraded, I ask myself why I just wasted my coin. I certainly will not do it again, there is little point.

When I logged off last night my server was not doing all that well but we at least had all of the nodes on our borderlands. I log in today and we have a few camps and one tower. That is it out of all the maps. Again I ask myself. Why did I waste a couple hours in WvWvW last night? In that time I got 3 badges, wasted a little over a gold on upgrades (a lot for a leveling player), and wasted time I could have spent leveling and working on things that are more lasting.

It isn’t the winning vs losing that I have a problem with. In PvP there will always be both. What I have an issue with is that there is very little consequence for winning or losing. This makes everything that takes place in between meaningless for the most part.

For some reason I do not even level as quickly in WvWvW as I did at release. This just adds another log onto the “why am I here” fire. Couple that with very little loot for the time spent and I am left scratching my head as to why I should continue to participate.

I find WvWvW entertaining however I would compare it to a movie that I go see. It is enjoyable for a couple hours but I am not going to pay full price to go see it again. I already know the ending.

And most threads about botting are abotut the same thing, blinking nude node miners, characters farming moa’s, goups of 3 in the same area moving about at the same time in the same direction…I am sure they get tired of reading the same thing over and over again.

But it’d be cool if these bots just poofed-be-gone.

Ya? Then they should probably do something about it rather than attack the players who aren’t doing the cheating.

The main reason is that there is a sticky dedicated to this subject and we don’t require more, that would be overkill on this forum with so many being created daily. The devs are FULLY aware of the problem and have stated they are dealing with it. They just deal with it in waves rather than after every forum post/report.

Gotcha, a 4 month old sticky clearly shows the “dedication” they outline in that thread. Of course the last post in that thread said they will not “report to players the steps they are taking.” In other words, just trust Anet to do the job!! No matter what your eyes tell you.

I would like to see more threads dedicated to showing posters how to use a search function, rather than creating a brand new thread or 15 every day saying the exact same things.

Of course if we had too many threads showing people how to use the search function I would expect the moderators to “attack” that problem by deleting some of them or merging them.

This was very helpful. Now we can all search to find the closed threads that I am talking about and ask the same question I did. Good job!!

“We are actively improving our means of detecting ‘bot’ activity in the game automatically. This includes tools for our customer support team to help them verify ‘botting’ reports and efficiently issue account terminations. Recently we have also hired a team of data specialists who will be helping us create more effective tools for analyzing reports of ‘botting.’” -Mike Lewis…4 months ago

Meanwhile today bots are warping all over the place gathering? And the only response given thus far has been “report them.” Even though it has already been explained how difficult that is to do with the warping going on.

By submitting guess reports your clogging up the employees times who are looking to ban actual RMT. Your wasting resources that could be used elsewhere. Also, too many wrongful reports and you may get banned yourself, as it states on the tos. Its on each person to decide, just remember to factor in everything is all.

I know someone who was temp banned because they gave a guild member gold for the title. They had to wait days to sort it out. Personally I posted once on forums about an idea I had, unfortunately i posted in 4 places. Thinking 4 was not soo spammy and that they were all relevant forum pages. Without blinking I was permabanned from forums because the 4 simultaneous posts ranked up permaban points. I explained the situation and it was sorted out, but look at what happens to people. Whos to say you don’t get someone banned by accident and they get so annoyed they stop playing? Your unintentionally hurting the game and population. I’m definitely not for RMT, botting, or hacking, but you need to have a clear picture when causing undo stress on players and employees. From a business standpoint your clogging up hours of work for people who have better things to do than follow shadows. I’m not against reporting, I’m just saying make sure you know. In the case I stated above where a guy appeared at every node ahead of me, yea, that’s not normal.

There is no “guessing” about someone who warps. Then again, you know that. But hey, lets keep trying to stop people from reporting bots!! That sounds like a great idea. /facepalm

In-game, I’ve noticed characters that appear out of nowhere and then disappear just a moment later. Usually they appear next to (random, not some specific rich) gathering nodes, but I’ve began to notice them also appear near zone portals recently. I’m almost positive these players are botting/cheating (somehow warping from node to another) but the thing is, I don’t want to risk my own account in case I’m actually making false accusations because I’m not 100% sure. So, should I report them or not?

So you see me login,i pop right next to you,and then i port to another town, pop away again.Youre gonna report me ?

Yes, if you aren’t botting you’ll have nothing to worry about. I find it odd so many are trying to defend warping. Actually, no that is par for the course these days. Cast doubt that botting takes place and companies ignore it. See Blizzard.

The fact still remains that you submitted a false report, and were to hasty in doing so,it Can end up badly for me if you did.People have been wrongly accused before you know. And neither me nor anyone else that gets reported in this way and ending being banned for how many days, having to submit tickets and having to wait for how long, would like having to deal with all this..all because you thought i was a bot.

The fact still remains that you are getting awfully upset about people who report bots. Wonder why that is.

obviously he’s getting upset because no one wants to be banned from their account for several days/weeks for no reason. I doubt you would want that either.

And obviously they would not be banned unless they were doing something wrong. Common sense stuff here people.

The game is mostly done solo. The only grouping you’ll do is in dungeons and even then, it’s very shallow because of the lack of distinct roles and the poorly designed skill system. The personal story is pretty much solo as well, no group missions like in GW1. Grouping is pretty much a novelty feature in this game. So yeah, mostly alone. When you do manage to find other people in the open world, though, they’ll just zerg the closest event with you and then run away. Not much to it, it’s the most impersonal and shallow experience i’ve ever had in MMO gaming.

What he means is, every MMO since WoW was released has become solo friendly. Not sure why he is telling us this, anyone who has played MMO’s the past 5+ years knows what to expect.

So after coming back to play GW2 I started a Mesmer. I’m up to level 17 and have seen few other people. It would not be a big deal except that some of the events are impossible to do alone. This is not fun when champions are taking over waypoints for example and no one is around to help get them back.

It is surprising to me how empty these zones are. When I played before there were too many people in them and events were nothing but zerg, now it is the opposite.

Why are so many people from high population servers defending so hard their obvious advantage? I have a feeling these same people who are calling everyone else “whiners” will be here whining when Anet finally does something to negate their unbalanced advantage.

I’m sorry, but hard caps simply punishes players who play when you don’t. The only thing that should happen is what I suggested above, other wise you break the system.

Also, as other have stated, nothing is stopping you from forming night teams with people who play on an American Server from Asia. And if you are that out numbered, maybe your server should go on a recruitment drive to get more people interested in WvW.

It is going to be hilarious when the hammer drops. I fully expect your type to be here with post after post “crying” about your lost numerical advantage. It will be glorious.

You might want to brush up on the defintion of “Asia” and the military history of the region. There have been numerous land wars fought there. Including by countries like the US.

I’m not dismissing numerical superiority. I’m dismissing the knee-jerk reaction to anything that’s beating you: “NERF IT!”.

How about, for a nice change of pace, we ask people to put in some effort to turn the tide in their favor since the problem is one of player organization, not game mechanics, rather than demanding a game mechanic fix for something that isn’t a game mechanic problem?

Just this once? Pretty please?

Just one time, let’s not insist that every problem be solved by demanding the developers reduce everyone to the lowest common denominator.

Why do you suppose that saying about fighting a land war in Asia came about? Oh right, because people have fought there and realized the cost is not worth it. Exactly what is going on in GW2 WvW.

You are asking “some people” to put in effort while others get a free ride. That is the problem. I have no problem “putting in the effort” if it was even remotely beneficial to do so. However, in WvWvW’s current state is simply is not. Spending gold to upgrade things for example is useless. The overnight zergs destroy it all by the morning when no one is on. So you have essentially just deleted some of your gold. Last night for example we had every structure we owned fully upgraded when I went to bed. When I logged on today Aspenwood owned every point on every map. It was not “lack of strategy” that made that happen. It was numerical superiority during the overnight hours.

mcl you could have just said that you have absolutely no idea how to fix the problem. that would have saved yourself some time. It is quite clear you do not grasp the problem.

I grasp the problem completely. But since you believe I’m wrong, kindly explain how the things I listed do not solve the problem. HINT: claiming that you can’t do them isn’t a valid defense of your position.

Why do you not fight a land war in Asia? Because they outnumber you so badly they can literally just throw soldiers at you and win. That is what is happening in WvWvW. During primetime servers can “hold their own” to an extent but the overpopulated servers dominate in the overnight. They do so through numerical superiority, not the reason you list above.

Why are you so quick to dismiss numerical superiority as the advantage that it is? You are basically expecting one side to have to go to extraordinary lengths in order to compete while the other can just zerg around and take everything.

Do me a favor, if you are near AC, go and take a look at how many people are there, how many people want to group up, or how many people reply to you when you ask them to do explorable mode?

I’ve had more luck doing the very last dungeon with people than the first dungeon. Why do you think that is? Shouldn’t people start from the beginning? Basically, we are allowed to skip the whole of the dungeon process and start with Zhaitan token farming for the best gear. Is that designed properly or an oversight?

I think the biggest problem with why people are skipping dungeons early on is that the gear is garbage for the most part. When compared to how difficult they can be it makes them not worth doing at all. So ya, bad design.

The problem with full auto loot is that it encourages suicide bombing, like the wizard bombs of DAoC. Personally, i think any rewards you get from WvW should be based around taking keeps and achieving team based goals rather than just killing another player.

That runs into the problem of first repair costs not being offset and two making leveling through WvW even worse than it already is. I do think there needs to be better rewards though for the team based objectives but until they get things more balanced population wise that is a lost cause.

@Logan – I was talking to some of my guildmates the other day about this. Tabula Rasa use to have many dynamic events centered around such issues. Even NPC quest hubs would be regularly attacked and taken over until people manned up and took them back.

But instead of no reward as stated I think it should be an extremely tough monster, and it would give tokens and loot. The mob should have scripting like a raid mob, but on a grander scale, thus requiring things like siege weapons, orbs, and full skilled players to remove.

The mob should go from area to area tearing it up until it is either killed or puts the lead server back at 1/3 the map. this monster should be no push over for a zerg, and if it is killed should drop some cash, an exotic/legendary piece of gear and/or tokens. But it should be worth the pain it will bring.

The mob should only spawn randomly during a 72hr+ window after a server has 66% of the board controlled. This would create an even more competative enviroment.

If you give a benefit of any kind for killing a dragon or whatever, then everyone will transfer to the successful servers where they can kill the dragon for phat lewtz.

Am I the only one sitting here waiting for reset or for them to disable orbs?

(InB4 YOU SHOULD JUST SPEND TONS OF GOLD TRYING OVER AND OVER! AND DYING!)

The best solution I can come up with is if a Sever Controls like 70-99 percent of all territories in WvWvW, Then there should be a Dynamic Event which calls in a Dragon who attacks the area/forts which are controlled by the Sever who owns the 70-99 percent.

This will add challenge to the Server which has total control so their are not bored and the servers who are being dominated have a chance to fight back as the dominating Server has to deal with a few dragons.

Dragons are center around destruction in general so it attacks what ever is in it’s way and their focus are Orb locations and to cause chaos.

If the Dominating Server can hold onto their percentage and down dragons as wells as fix what it destroys then….they are a really good Server.

That do you think?

Okay, as long as that dragon gives zero loot or benefit of any kind. If it does then you are simply pushing more people to the most successful servers.

One thing to keep in mind. They only spent a month or so on balancing. During BWE3 many people complained about how stupidly easy they had made the game. The response was “we will be working on balancing over the next month before release.”

Anet for some reason thought they could balance an MMO in a month when companies like Blizzard have been trying to do it for years. This is why everything is so out of proportion in this game. They simply did not make balance a top priority.

DAoC RvR was unballanced? I’m not sure what RvR YOU played, but that wasn’t my experience at all. Yes, some servers had realms that lost population leading to them doing poorly in RvR for some time, but that is the nature of such games and it is temporary.

The biggest issue with the queues in GW2 is that it makes it difficult to impossible to organize, coordinate, and respond in a timely manner to changing situations in the various borderlands.

I’m not sure what OP faction you played on but for those of us on the Underpowered factions it was unbalanced. Then again nostalgia is a wonderful thing and there is a lot of it going on in this thread.
