All challenge in this game was removed in beta. There was a time in beta where the game was challenging and it was fun. Fighting enemies was not a faceroll event. Unfortunately, Anet changed everything not long before release for what they called “balance.” The reality was that they nerfed everything because a few people on the forums were crying about dying. So here the game is today. So easy a bot can do it.

Because the Queensdale champ train is probably equally rewarding with less difficulty and minimal effort or thought? Follow a big group of players, press 1 on the champ, sit back for 2 minutes, get loot, follow group to the next champ, rinse repeat.
In orr you get surrounded by huge mobs and downed pretty fast.

Ugh, I had forgotten that is what GW2 is now. Was just in the process of downloading the game again but what’s the point if nothing has changed? This is the same type of “gameplay” that made me stop playing FFXIV AAR. There, it is “fate grinding” in GW2, it is “champ grinding.” Exact same mechanic, different name.

Except that achievement points, unlike gear grind, don’t provide enough of an in game advantage so that someone who can’t do the content can’t play the game. That’s the big difference between the gear grind in WoW and what we have here.

I have people in my Guild who’ve come back from a six month break and they just jump right in and start running dungeons with us, including the newest dungeons.

Try that in other MMOs.

The reason they are coming back from a six month break is due to the boredom GW2 has in the first place once you reach max level…

Because you know these people personally and you know that they were bored (as opposed to sick or busy with life, or having internet problems, or focusing on school).

You are correct, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have assumed they were part of the mass exodus that too place after release.

That happens in most if not all MMO’s. What GW2 has done is made sure the game is playable when/if they come back, even if for a few minutes to just test the water.

True enough. I"ve played for 2 days now and think its about time to uninstall again. Everytime I think “this will be the time GW2 is fun” Then I get back into the game and it is the exact same thing. Oh well.

If think there are a lot of people who never played GW1.

You are right. The game was not popular and filled little more than a niche role in the MMO community. So yes, few have played GW1. However, Anet was supposed to be trying to compete with WoW. You do not compete with WoW by having an end game that turns the player base into teenage girls looking for the perfect outfit.

You do not compete with WoW by making yet another clone either. If it’s WoW or WoW-like you want, there are plenty of other options out there for you.

I find it comical that people such as yourself do everything in your power to shove people out the door in an effort to maintain the status quo. It is clear with the rapidly declining populations that a lot of people do not enjoy the game. Yet every other post I see you attacking anyone that criticizes it. I simply do not understand that mentality. People did the exact same thing in SWTOR and the game tanked. I find it odd that you want the same to happen to GW2.

Actually, GW1 was remarkably successful. Games don’t have to match WoW’s profit margins in order to be considered a success. GW1 sold seven million copies, which is no mean feat. I do think there are lessons from GW1 to be properly learned from though, things that would improve the quality of GW2 – and its endgame.

For instance, the Elite Missions and the very varied structure of all Missions across the game. Some of them were very inventive and fun to play through. Hard Mode – or something equivalent – is worth looking at too and the Zhaishen Dailies were a fantastic way of motivating people to go back to certain areas, which is an issue in GW2.

If you actually believe that GW1 was “remarkably successful” you must have a very low view of what success is.

That’s what it feels like. I think Fractals was the worst thing that happened to the game for the simple fact it yanked the player base from other areas (that were already slowly dying out). I also think the unreasonable dungeon mechanics chased people away from higher level dungeons.

I don’t wish to get 100% map completion. I don’t wish to play Super Guild Wars Bros and do jump puzzles. I’d like to advance exciting story or make some kind of progress w/ my character and see other characters out in the world and join with them and do stuff… new stuff.

I try to log-in and not be negative, but I usually just end up running around aimlessly and then logging out.

The Living Story started out terribly. First impressions are your last, and if fixing broken signs, lighting fires and rummaging dead bodies is how ANet planned on rolling it out… the content managers need Cocaine introduced into their lifestyle immediately.

I can’t be the only person feeling this way. I don’t hate GW2. I enjoyed my path to where I am now… but I feel like I “beat” a console game right now.

What the heck happened to the game ANet was advertising before launch?

That is pretty much it. Get to 80 and then stop playing or level another character. This is probably the most boring MMO at max level that I have played. The entire reason is because of there being very little character development once you hit max level. How this got into an MMORPG I will never know. The entire point of an RPG is to develop your character.

Think about what this game actually does. You hit max level and the game then says now that you have reached the pinnacle, you are going to grind for clothes. Not clothes that make you all that more powerful but instead just clothes in a fashion sense. In other words “End Game” turns you into a teenage girl who has to find the perfect outfit. That is supposed to keep people playing?

I really did enjoy leveling up but after getting necro and thief to 80 I see little point to do the content over again knowing that once I hit max level it is game over.

Your character doesn’t stop developing after 80. You can refine it better, by getting better gear and tweaking your spec here and there to suit your playstyle. I don’t believe you have optimised your character if you have just hit 80.

Never said I have done everything. Getting better gear is what I want to do but I have no idea where to start. There is no way I have the gold to buy the stuff on trader.

I am starting to wonder what this game actually is about.

What’s there to wonder about? There’s a world out there, which you can play in and do stuff as you like. You can make friends and go do things, dungeons, Fractals, Dynamic Event chains, map completions, stupid silly roleplaying in Lion’s Arch . . .

Or you can hop into WvW and play that.

Or you can move to PvP, challenge yourself doing well there.

This game is “about” stuff as clearly as any other MMO out there currently. Even GW1 had “what’s this game about?” even when it had seven significant storylines going on (of varying lengths).

What is the point of anything you named if you can not further develop your character while doing so?

When I went back to WoW after the first month of GW2 the most difficult thing for me in WoW was combat. Everything felt so slow. Coming back to GW2 is again a culture shock combat wise because the player has to be much more aware of what is going on.

I would not go as far as to say GW2 has ruined all other MMO’s in this respect but I would say GW2 has set the new standard in how combat will be addressed in future MMO’s. The stand still and beat on things model is going away in MMO’s. WoW progressed it some from EQ1 and now GW2 has progressed it from WoW.

If a MMO is worth wasting your time playing it then it is worth a sub. If it is not worth a sub then it is not worth wasting your time playing it.

Most here are full of it by the way. It is comical reading the reasons people give for not being willing to pay.

So if a game (any genre) is worth my time ‘like borderlands 2 for example’ i should send 15$ to their devs each month. Makes sense brah.

Games like that are not giving you free content. In fact, games of that type are charging for DLC these days. People here expect Anet to give them free content, free bug fixes, free basically everything. That will only last as long as the gem shop is making them enough cash. Comically in another thread I started a few were outraged at the thought of Anet putting content in the gem shop.

Bottom line: People want everything free, they want it now, and claim they will all leave if they do not get what they want. People lie.

I have seen them say there will be free updates but I have not seen them say they will not be having paid expansions. I would like to see their quote on that if it is the case. It would seem odd since they did have xpacs for GW1.

Edit:

Reading that whole thing seems to point toward what I was suggesting in my OP. Releasing new zones in the store.

I don’t think I like the idea that I might have to pay for new stuff like that. I mean with the expansions I got new areas, races, and content all for one price. What if they break it all down in the GS. Plus is this how we are going to have to buy the next story installment….?

What if they do break it all down but getting it all would be equal to the price of a normal expansion? However, it would have the added luxury of letting players pick and choose what they want. If they didn’t want “panda’s” as a new race, they would not have to buy it, yet could still pay for the new zones.

- New Story Arcs

These are three things I would be glad to pay for and are something that could be implemented without forcing others to purchase them. What things would you like to see in the shop?

Exploring in this game has been more fun than other MMO’s.

So much THIS!! its fun. I don’t need the badges, the bags of loot and rewards for completing events pays for a few repairs bills. But I still play WvW 90% of the time. Having duels, being part of large sieges – its all great fun.

That’s why we play games in the first place, if its not fun then its work and you’re doing it wrong.

I used to see this type of thread all the time when I played WoW, people want rewards all the time. gimme, gimme, gimme. Not saying that having a few rewards isn’t bad, and having a long term goal is also good. BUT its when you start demanding rewards to make it fun is when you are missing the point altogether.

Ya, taking the same “camp” 20 times a day is so much “fun.” Especially when on top of that we can get very little xp or loot for it! Good times, great fun!

Obviously, WvW in its current incarnation just isnt for you!

Personally, I really do play to have fun. I have more fun in WvW than elsewhere in the game so I spend most of my time there.

That being said, I fully support implementing systems which can encourage those who want more from it and hopefully the March update (if it actually comes in March..) will start taking steps in that direction.

Or judging by these forums a lot more than just me.

I’m with Rezzet on this. I’m getting tired of losing to coverage, and having a 10k+pt lead to wake up with us losing. I’ve just about come to the conclusion that I’d rather sit in queue’s for 1-2hrs, and lose to better players, than lose because of server population.

imo, it’s not losing.

I was going to come in this morning and post how nice it was for me to read a thread in the forums that talked about how much fun everyone was having with a minimal emphasis on the score. The fact is, the scoring system is arbitrary and heavily weighted to NA servers that have the best overseas coverage. It doesn’t have a kitten thing to do with anything else. Doesn’t indicate in any way the quality of the players or the commanders. The high Tier teams have the best overseas coverage and therefore attract quene stalking NA prime time players who want to “win”. So, yes, if someone wants two hour quenes, zergy play, and a high score, that’s the place to be.

The new scoring methods hinted at in the summary of upcoming March changes will be interesting to see. How anything could compensate for an offshore imbalance is beyond me. Or, any imbalance in numerical strength in the field that follows a greater WvW population on a server for that matter.

So, anyway, my original post. I am so happy to see the fun that players have been having this week. It’s a win for all of us on SBI. This kind of play is a 1000 times more challenging and satisfying to play than what we had been subjected to for many months. Two thumbs up for the “pay to transfer” model that brought about this abrupt change.

My condolences to those who were caught unawares and left behind. Truly.

Pretty much this. Scoring system is arbitrary at best and broken at worst. Also there is no real reason to win, other than bragging right and satisfying egos. It seems that this week we got a group of servers where (after all the transfers out) the ego may not matter as much. That is refreshing.

Sure we are “winning” on CD, but honestly I had way more fun last night holding a supply camp (in one of the enemy borderlands) with 3 guildies and 2 people who joined us in the process for a couple of hours. Not many points, but lots of fun.

This. scores don’t really matter. Though they increase the tier status of a server, it’s the end goal of having experienced something with friends.

Okay, lets remove all rewards from PvE then. After all what matters is just hanging out with friends right?

That would be just fine by me.

It would not be fine by the vast majority of players who want to play an MMO rather than a FPS game.

Plenty of people on low-pop servers having severe queue issues since 28th patch.

See this thread:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/wuvwuv/WvWvW-Queues-issue-Merged-Threads/

One can live with culling and wait for the patch (although culling is also worse since 28th according to a majority of people who voted in the poll)

People who can only play for a few hours and those at peak times can’t live with queues that eat up most of their available time though.

So a fix is much more urgently needed.

I’d say they are lying, frankly. I am on a low pop server and there are zero queues at any time of the day. My evidence is just as good as anyone’s in that thread supposedly from a low pop server.

“Play it because it is fun” is not a valid reason when the entire point is that WvWvW lacks lasting fun due to things I mentioned.

I think the main issue, at least for me and a lot of people I know is the impression Anet are creating of not listening to WvW players concerns still less prioritising accordingly.

For a lot of people the queueing bug (or feature) has a substantial impact.

If you only have 3-4hrs in which to play, losing half of it to a queue (or all of it if you d/c or crash) is rapidly going to result in finding some other way to spend your time.

It’s pretty clear that this problem is affecting high and low population servers and it’s a severe enough issue that I would expect Anet to be prioritising it over everything else, even culling and certainly over adding more PvE, grind and meaningless vanity stuff.

This thread would have been a perfect opportunity to show WvW players that Anet were actually listening to their concerns and were prioritising sensibly to address them.

It is not affecting my server at all. I have had zero queue times since coming back go GW2. Come to Storm Bluff Isle for no wait time at all in WvWvW.

On my server I have not had to wait at all since starting to play GW2 again. I am going to guess that everyone flocked to a few servers while free transfers were still in place and are now complaining about the wait times?

I do think there are issues with WvWvW that seriously need addressed though. I was surprised to see little change at all since I stopped playing a month after release. In fact if any change has taken place at all it is for the worse, less xp, less loot, less upgrading/use of siege, etc.
