I swore I saw a message about this on the forums earlier.
At least, it’s on the State of the Game update and Wiki header.
From too much heat hmm? My laptop has a really good fan and cooling system the underside is warm but not hot. Are you sure it’s that? If its overtaxed could I over clock it to fix the problem?
You need a program to monitor internal temperatures of the components themselves.
I can’t be sure, I’d have to check things like this myself and rule out possibilities through trial and learning.
Like Tjynde said, overclocking it (if that was possible) would probably only make things worse.
Unfortunately, the 5470 is right about at the cut-off for minimum requirements, it’s about the level of the Intel HD 3000. If you have the DDR3 version, it falls below the minimum for ATI/AMD cards.
People have been getting artifacts like that from overheating, but it may simply be that your card is being overtaxed or can’t work fast enough. I would suggest a cleaning if your laptop has not had one in a while. Laptops tend to get even dustier than desktops because they’re more of a pain to open up (so no one does it).
It’s watch your internal temperatures with something like PC Wizard 2012 and see how hot it’s running, as well.
You might also consider a cooling pad if, after being cleaned, it’s still heating up. It can help you get steadier performance out of your system, even if it’s still low-level.
I expect we’ll see changes depending on how things sell. I’m sure they’ve thought about it, but they can’t really predict how many people will even be interested.
They have to consider development cost versus how many people will buy, and price it such that enough people do buy to cover costs and yes, even profit.
The armour looks fantastic, so I do hope the artists are getting paid a professional wage.
Thinking of the work they put in, I really have no problem with $7 for a vanity skin.
I do agree that it would be nice to not have the “transmutation” be a permanent combining, but more like the old way. I think they both have advantages and disadvantages from a profit perspective.
I had the same problem – crashing like crazy and it was very frustrating !
I reset my router and it solved this (at least for now ?).
Darn, it logged me out and ate my post.
Boiled down to, I feel it’s a more realistic and “war-like” approach. You’re all combatants, you’re all exposed to being potentially targeted and you can all help your allies.
It’s really synergy of skill. You need to know how your class works in ALL “roles” to do the best you can. You must work as a team and be situationally aware and use the proper skills when you need to, across classes.
I liked playing a Druid in WoW, and I think that’s why I really like GW2’s combat. You can use skills from any of the “roles” and your ability to jump in as an off-tank or off-healer could get your group out of a tight situation.
I’ve always liked when things get messy and when, as a healer, I’d be doing something completely unexpected – like DPSing the final boss while healing my two remaining group-members. It was more intense and exciting for us to be pushed out of our “roles”.
I can understand that this type of combat is not what everyone is going to enjoy – but I think it’s wonderful if you like a “fast-paced” and intense fight where you’re put to the test as a team across all roles.
To me, this sounds like a heat issue – that one or more components in your computer is overheating.
The loud noise you’re hearing is probably the heat alarm.
I would suggest first, opening up your case and cleaning out the dust. Even if it’s not the problem right now, it is always a good idea because left unchecked it will be the problem eventually.
It sounds silly and simple – but this has helped many people having the same problem.
You can use a tool like PC Wizard 2012 to monitor temperatures while you play – alt-tab out at intervals and check. If it is not dust, but you are overheating, you may need new cooling components, and throttling back the game settings should also help.
I’m in the camp that think it’s a mistake to try to shove any profession into a traditional role.
You can certainly build them all different ways, yes. I think that’s absolutely correct.
The way I look at it, you can have a character who is “built like a tank”, but they’re not going to be “tanking” in the MMO sense.
What did you like about healing ? I ask because I liked healing too, and what drew you to it might help give a better idea of what you’d like in this game.
What I’ve found is that you’re better off looking for “support” than direct healing. If you like healing because you like helping people, there are plenty of support options. And, really, it seems like almost every class will be able to be built in that direction if you choose !
Guardian seems to have many support / heal skills. It’s not really healing where you directly target someone, but I’ve noticed the skills are team-focused as the profession name would certainly imply.
Engineers have a healing turret and a med-pac gun.
Since there’s no “real” healing (just attempts to push a class as far as possible in that direction) – I would find a class you enjoy playing and go from there, you’ll almost certainly find skills to your liking that fit your playstyle.
Profanity filter isn’t a license to use profanity. It’s an odd concept (one that I’ve thought was very strange for the longest time) that people just need to shrug and accept. Behave in game.
It’s not that odd. That’s the way it’s “supposed” to work in WoW, according to them (when someone actually gets suspended for it, this comes up) – they just don’t enforce it very well/at all.
ANet is actually doing something instead of just ignoring it.
I had a similar issue like this, myself – but I couldn’t tell if it was GW2 or my internet connection.
I reset my router and all has been well since. knock on wood
It really depends on your expectations.
Even if I didn’t have the highest expectations, I wouldn’t buy the desktop in the OP as it is really overpriced. You can build or even buy a much better system for that price.
Intel HD 4000 is not a good buy, either. I would return it if possible. I don’t know what you paid for it, but you can get a much better (more powerful) laptop for about $4-500 USD.
The 6410D falls below even the Intel HD 4000 and is actually below the minimum requirements listed for ATI/AMD cards. I would not purchase something that for amount of money that doesn’t even meet the minimum requirements – it will be a gamble if it can even play the game at all.
The 6410D is integrated graphics, which can’t really be compared to the desktop cards with similar numbers.
The game scales very well on less powerful systems – but if you have $500 to spend, you want to get the most for your money, right ? Not something that might not even run the game.
“Cyberpower” and “Ibuypower” are sister companies and if you buy from them it’s best to have enough hardware knowledge to troubleshoot if something wasn’t installed or came apart during shipping. Even very recently I am still hearing horror stories come out of those two companies. They also have no problem putting in a power supply that will fry your system, that is the very worst part to cheap out on and they’ll do it every time they can unless you “build” it on your website and specify a better one.
If you’re on a tight budget, something with an i3 and HD 7770 should be able to be made for that same price and would get you MILES better performance.
If you can’t build yourself, well, think about it ! It’s very easy – it’s like LEGOs for grownups. Failing that, a friend or a local computer club / computer majors might do it for fun/free/a nice tip.
I’ve been getting expected performance from my hardware, but I’ve been surprised to see people with more powerful systems get half or even less in the way of fps.
I have an i5-3450 with an HD 6870 and I get a steady 60fps on maxed settings (minus reflections – just terrain and sky there), I haven’t yet been in a fight that’s really dropped it, it’s never gotten visibly choppy.
Yet I’ve seen people whose systems out-power mine in every way that are getting only 30fps or lower no matter what they try.
I would wonder if it’s overclocking / not letting the game dictate settings, but it seems people have tried that without it helping.

If I was going to commit fraud over a video game, I certainly wouldn’t publicise it.

I pre-purchased and it’s true that I didn’t get to play the first day – I couldn’t log in when I was home for work, except for two hours before I went to sleep. I was a little disappointed, that’s also true, but I realised it’s just part of life – life here being what happens when you suddenly flood some new servers.
I don’t think I’m entitled to anything special. It was the launch of a new game – I knew it was going to be crazy and likely nigh unplayable – and that it was only going to get worse for the “real” launch.
I don’t think this will be remembered as a terrible, negative, unfair event – just as yet another not-so-smooth launch of a brand-new game. What could I reasonably expect from a situation where servers were going from 0 to being bombarded endlessly by hundreds of thousands of people ? Even games that have been active for the better part of a decade still have problems with launching new content, even when they already know very well how taxed they’ll be.
I’m nowhere near petty enough to withhold funds because of a completely and utterly predictable hiccup in launching a brand-new game. Like you said, they worked FIVE YEARS on this game and you LIKE it. What is two days that everyone knew weren’t going to be the most playable, anyway ?
Aliken it to having a custom piece of artwork created for you – chances are the artist is going to work on initial sketches for you and none of them are going to be exactly what you want. Are you going to fire that artist because they couldn’t do the impossible ? Get it right without testing and feedback ? All firing them is going to do is put a talented artist out of a job and you will never arrive at the product you desire to purchase if you keep cutting people off for unavoidable “mistakes”.
I’m experiencing some unpleasant bugs in game right now, but I’m going to continue giving them the benefit of the doubt as they have done nothing but keep us informed and worked to fix things.
I hope GW2 rolls out authenticators. I would gladly pre-order and pay to offset production costs.
It sounds like you are having a heat-related issue – one of more of your computer’s components is getting too hot, perhaps the sound is some sort of temperature alarm ?
To confirm this or rule this out, you could use something like PC Wizard 2012 (something that can monitor CPU and GPU temps, if you don’t have such an application already) – note your “idle” temperature before playing and once you hit problems, alt-tab out of the game and check the temperatures and loads.
Also, have you cleaned inside your computer recently ? I know more than a few people who have taken this time to clear out some crippling dust bunnies – they can be a big source of overheating.
bann 3000 people first day…..biggest troll ever? or best marketing strategy ever set into play?
not many people know how to do a charge back.. but if they did..lol
what 3000x 59.99 plus tax lol
A chargeback as described above would be committing fraud, something to which banks do not take kindly.
You may get away with fraud, many people “get away with” many crimes every day from speeding to illegal drug use. If you’re caught committing this type of credit card fraud : best case, you end up on a blacklist and find yourself blocked by other retailers. Worst case, they can cancel the card and the credit card company will come after you to recover their due. I’d suppose they’re more likely to come after you the more of their time and money you waste by committing fraud.
I find this very strange.
I have the i5-3450 3.1 Ghz + HD 6870 (8Gb DDR3 1600 Corsair Vengeance + etc).
I only have the Intel stock cooler and I’ve been monitoring temperatures and the CPU has not gone about 40C and the GPU hasn’t been seen above 50C yet – and I have lots of programs open while playing GW2.
I have almost everything (all but reflections, which are on terrain + sky) at the highest settings and I get a constant 60fps – I’m sure it dips during big fights, but it’s never gotten choppy enough for me to notice.
I see a lot of people with more powerful systems than my own getting much lower fps.
I’d honestly check for dust or a poor power supply causing issues. Otherwise, I just find it very strange that it seems like many people with better hardware are getting much worse performance than I am.
